No worries, thanks. I knew I'd heard it before

I know I'm late to this episode and probably no one will see this comment, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Claire talking about taking the long way home. Isn't that something Clara said to the Twelve when she left with Arya Stark?

S04.E06: Young Love, Old Love and Take This Job and Shove It
Starchild replied to Pallas's topic in The Conners
This episode felt messy to me. After that first phone call, all of Becky's interactions with her college project team were commented on after the fact. We didn't see them interacting at all. And I think between that first scene with Mark meeting Logan for the first time at the diner, and the next watching Casablanca, a whole month had gone by, because suddenly they were messing around and Mark was in love and thinking about having sex to keep Logan invested in a long distance relationship. I can tell you that I'm certainly not invested, having missed everything that would have gone on between them to build up to that kind of feeling. Virtually everything significant happened off screen. It was a master class in tell, don't show. -
My favourite part of the show.

Of course the bounty hunter's brother turns up, somehow having found where Ginny put the head, still in its box, looking for the guy whose name is on the box, and finding him WHILE HE'S ON THE MOVE! Of course. This show and its contrived coincidences. Why would anyone name their community "PADRE"? Why, Alicia?

Yeah I loved hearing hints of the Voyager theme when they were walking around the Protostar bridge the first time.

The show hasn't known what to do with Glassman since he went into remission. If he's no longer going to mentor Shaun (something he's really good at, and is interesting to watch), then I won't miss him.

So, watching this it occurred to me that if this was the old Edward Woodward version, the story would have stopped with the first gang. The story would be McCall trying to help this kid get away from this gang. But the 21st century version has to have every simple case turn into some big conspiracy involving multiple entities and/or international espionage and/or ultra-capitalist assholes manipulating the little guy. It's the simplicity that made the old show better. One of my favourite episodes was that one about the struggle between the community clinic and the street gang, and how the lady who ran the clinic didn't want McCall to use violence to help them, which meant he had to find another way. Simple, human story. Those were the days.

I like this show but I still find Marriner super annoying. The preferential treatment she gets from her captain mother is bald-faced nepotism and how is it allowed to continue? How are there not complaints from others about the blatant favouritism? When Freeman called for her senior staff to go to the ready room to speak in private, why was an ensign going with them? She's not senior staff, but no one batted an eye at her going anyway. Gah! You can't tell me the main reason Marriner didn't want her mom to leave was because she'd be replaced by a captain who would not put up with Marriner's shit at all. Marriner would be forced to either shape up, or resign. I imagine my reaction is coloured by my own experience of people who have done less work than me, socialized with the boss and got better opportunities, but am I really the only person irked by this? Sigh, it continues to rankle me as I watch a show I enjoy otherwise. /rant

I was wondering why Laszlo has been so chummy with Colin Robinson, it seemed out of character for him to be so solicitous when historically they'd been mostly dismissive of him. So long, Colin Robinson.

I don't know if there setting up a romance between Robyn and Dante (a la Person of Interest), but you know who has tons of chemistry? Latifah and Mr. Big. Every time they get together to snarl at one another I feel like they're a step away from tearing each others' clothes off. Dante is a wet blanket comparatively.

Was I the only one thinking for a second there that it was the dad and his pilot friend with the romantic backstory? When he was all "why did you leave" I was wondering if they were going there. They were just about to get a heaping pile of respect from me. And then... "are you still in love with Eve" came out of Dad's mouth and I thought "Welp"

I got a post-Reavers River Tam vibe lol

Observation #1: Can this really be the first time Shaun has encountered an automatic hand dryer? Even after COVID? Observation #2: As old as he is, who knew Glassman would be so emo? Observation #3: Truth serum? How are these doctors not in jail yet, never mind still practicing. Observation #4: Once again the doctors do this creepy voyeuristic thing where they hang around for no reason at all to listen to a private conversation. The patient was in no immediate danger, there was no reason for them not to leave when it became clear the mother and daughter were going to have an intimate and emotional discussion. We the viewers did not need them hovering there in order to appreciate the drama. There wasn't even a story reason for it, it's not like their characters learned something from it. God that drives me crazy every time it happens.

Remember when a herd of walkers took down the fences around an actual prison? None of those guys would have been held back by a couple of ropes. Good times.

Huh he sounded so different this time.

That wasn't Doug Jones this time, right?

It's funny, if I were part of this group and the guys got positive pregnancy tests, I would not immediately accept that they're pregnant, no matter how weird our experience was. In fact, I would take it as a sign that I am NOT pregnant. Instead I would think that, since we're all sick, that something was introduced to our bodies that was affecting us all biochemically in the same way. And I would insist we all go to a doctor for testing.

My loyalty is to Stephen King, which is why I haven't bailed yet. I read the short story, but so long ago I remember absolutely nothing about it. Probably a good thing, or I might be screaming at the TV every week. It's atmospheric that's for sure. Filmed in Nova Scotia, where I'm from, so that's also a plus.

It seems I'm the only person watching this, but I must admit I'm evil for hoping that Loa is gone. That kid is so annoying.

Observation #1: While it was apparent that the show was pushing this ADHD character for some obscure purpose, I did not see that reveal coming. Well played, show. Observation #2: Lim is going to hire her boyfriend? Does she not remember how things went the last time she had a boyfriend working under her? (Not like that.)

S19.E27: Anne Applebaum; Gillian Tett; Dan Savage
Starchild replied to PrincessPurrsALot's topic in Real Time With Bill Maher
Indeed. I wonder if the handful of rich people who pay half of New York's taxes actually own about 95% of its wealth. -
When I was a kid in the 70s in Canada, they used to play the national anthem before a movie, where I was at least. They don't anymore though. I think Bill is oversimplifying the obesity problem. This is more than just people making bad decisions. For some, the bad food is the only realistic option they have. Beyond simple choice, in order to eat well you need at least three things: access, money, and time. Some people simply don't have easy access to healthy food, maybe depending on where they live. Take "mass produced" areas like prison food, or school lunches where hamburgers and pizza often reign. It's just cheaper to produce a lot of it at once when you use the less healthy stuff. If they do have access to healthier options, it's often more expensive than the less healthy alternatives, making it a real challenge for people suffering from poverty to choose the $5 head of cauliflower over the $1 box of mac and cheese. Finally, cooking takes time. If you're working multiple jobs to make ends meet, sometimes all you have time for is food made for can openers and microwaves. Beyond individuals, the North American economic engine runs on sugar, fat and salt. Maybe that's where the government should replicate the anti-smoking blueprint. Force companies to make healthier food cheaper. They can afford it. Choice is definitely part of it, but there are a lot of socio-economic factors that feed the problem. Just having doctors tell their patients (the ones who can afford to see a doctor at all) to eat better is not going to cut it.

Not sure how they wanted us to feel when we saw the new baddies, but all I could think was "Again?" Can't we have some other kind of story once in a while in between all the post-apocalyptic death gangs?
