  1. If anyone can figure out how to get French cheese and wine in the middle of the war, it's going to be Tristan. I picture him as first class scrounger, or someone who is acquiring the best of what is available for a high ranking military officer. Basically, I'm picturing Tristan as a version of the James Garner character in The Great Escape or The Americanization of Emily

As much as James always wants to put the animals first, it was good of Mrs. Pumfrey to remind him that there are a few things in life that matter more and that there are times you need to put loved ones first. I liked that both James and Helen realized they had been wrong.

I thought Kal Penn would have been a good fit though.

The show has to be on for 2024 in some form being an election year.

I've been rooting for Kal Penn. Maybe there's negotiations going on that people are not aware of and hasn't yet leaked to the entertainment press/regular media.

I'm okay with correspondents hosting the show through the election. I still want to see Dulce Sloan get a full week solo behind the desk though.

I agree with you about Missy, but I think they may be looking to expand upon Mandy's family, who we have only seen in snippets so far.  They also may show more scenes in the auto shop and this may be how they turn Georgie into the Tire Doctor eventually.  All that may take the show in a slightly different direction and allow for new characters.

When you put it like, it does seem like it's going to be more of its own separate show than a pure continuation of Young Sheldon. I could see this possibly working if they spend more time in the auto-shop and turn it into a hybrid workplace/domestic sitcom. Show Georgie at work with his father-in-law and also Georgie at home with Mandy. I don't know how good it will be or if it would work, but your idea has a least a bit of potential.

Spin-offs sometimes take a character in a different direction too. Lou Grant was very different than when that character was on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Yes. When I think of older spin-offs, I think of two things. One is what you mentioned; after a series ends, taking a single character and following them to a new location/situation. Lou Grant and Frasier are excellent examples of this.

The second is taking a character that may be more a side character/recurring character or only appeared once and creating a show around them. Examples of this would Laverne and Shirley who appeared in a few episodes of Happy Days before getting their own show. Maude and the Jeffersons each appeared in multiple episodes of All in the Family before getting their own show.

My problem with the Georgie and Mandy spin-off is that it feels more like a continuation of Young Sheldon than a new/separate show. If they wanted to go the route of more or less continuing Young Sheldon without Sheldon, create a new show Young Missy. I've been hoping they would let her (Adult Missy) narrate an episode. I can't be the only one who would love to hear what Missy thought/her perspective on her family, her neighbors, classmates, and life. Also, Missy is severely underdeveloped and underused. This would be the perfect way to fix that.

Half a crown was 30p, in a pre-decimal system where a pound was 240p. That's all I can tell you. If you need to understand the modern US equivalent, I recommend Googling for a currency converter.

(ETA Someone up-thread talked about slang terms, so I want to stress that shilling, crown, guinea etc aren't slang terms, they were defined, official measures of currency. If a character mentions a 'bob', though, that is a slang term, referring to a shilling.)

I think what would be helpful for the Americans trying to figure this out, is pre-decimal to decimal conversation. Once we have pre-decimal to decimal, we can type decimal into an exchange calculator, and then put that into an inflation calculator, or vice-versa. I'm not sure which makes sense to do first.

If someone else has another idea or if I've missed a necessary step, please post it. I feel totally confident that the people on this board can more or less crowdsource a way to get the answer.

Not surprised that James and Helen decided to go ahead and try for children but, in that time and place, babies were considered a matter of course for newlywed couples unless the husband worked/was stationed some distanced from his wife and/or it was known that there were physical impediments re one or both of them preventing conception.  Was the audience supposed to believe that PDA James had been sleeping on the floor in another room all this time? Of course, now that they're trying for babies, they may find out they're not instantly rabbit-like. We shall see, I guess.

Birth control existed, it was just unreliable. I can't imagine James buying condoms (although they did exist) but the rhythm method is possible although it was/is incredibly unreliable and not that effective.

  7. I knew the secretary wouldn't last when she insisted on a form of cash payment (even if it was a deposit that would be counted towards the total bill). It demonstrated a complete lack of understanding regarding the kind of practice they had and the clientele they served.

I was worried when I first heard the man at the bar mention ferret roulette, but after seeing what it was, I will award creativity points.

I think this episode demonstrated how much Siegfried and James value the life of an animal. To them an animal in need of treatment deserves treatment no matter what kind of animal it is, and ending an animal's life should be the absolute last resort.

I hate this new move. The one show that made you subscribe to Disney+, they remove it from the channel and tell you to pay to watch it in the theater. I guess eventually it will stream on Disney+.

My understanding from the article is that they are not removing the series from  Disney+. This is addition, not subtraction. They make the movie, release it in theaters, then it goes to Disney+, and while that is happening episodes of The Mandalorian will still be available to stream on Disney+.

I’m a little nervous that the writers are shipping Siegfried and Mrs Hall. The conversation they had about divorce and Gerald’s intentions seemed to throw Siegfried.

I took that as surprise at the direction Gerald and Mrs. Hall's relationship had taken. He knew they were close friends. I think the mention of divorce made Siegfried suspect that she was thinking about marriage, and he did not expect that or realize the relationship was that serious.

2026, why so long? Assuming they are writing it now, start filming it late spring/ early summer. I feel like a 2025 date would do able.

My guess is special effects take time to do well.

I just started this show and have mixed feelings about this, but what really stood out to me was how AWFUL Cynthia Nixon is.  Her manner of speaking is just so awful it's like chalk on a blackboard. And Marian is no prize, either.

The first season is not that great but it vastly improves in the second season. If you are willing to stick with the series, you will be rewarded, especially if you are a fan of Bertha.

I saw it on Peacock. I did like the movie overall, but was sad that most of the boys left with the helicopter Dad. Is it really realistic that all the other parents would give permission for their sons to go on vacation with a stranger?

Based on the kind of school the movie is set at, it was probably not a totally random stranger. That kind of school tends to draw from a rather insular world. It may have been starting to open up in 1970, but there was a better than average chance they may have known the parents directly or through friends of friends. The fact that the invitation came from a parent's classmate may have been all the information the parents needed in 1970 to say yes.

A long-lost love of Agnes will turn up. She was in love with him 40 years ago but he was poor so she had to turn him down.

I do like the idea of a long lost love for Agnes.

Gladys will be forced to marry the Duke but the night before her wedding, she will escape out the window with the help of the guy she really likes.

If there is an escape, George has to be in on it and actively helping or aware of it but not doing anything to stop it. I actually like the idea of seeing some of the characters working together trying to help her with the escape.

There's no way that they would see this bumbling fool as a future leader.

My guess is that he looked better on paper. Who he seemed to be based on his application may not be the same as who he is in person.

Assuming Agnes is the same age as Christine B., around 70, it would make more sense for Oscar to be pushing 50.  (I think we've established he's around 40, or younger?)  Waiting until 30 to have a baby back then would have been quite unusual.  OK, maybe Agnes had multiple miscarriages/still births, etc.

I always thought there were miscarriages, still births, and babies who died young. I don't she waited until 30 to have children. I think she had the only child who lived to be an adult at 30. She had other children, but Oscar is the only one who lived long enough to grow into adulthood.

When Shelagh kept looking worried as she listened for Toni's baby's heartbeat (again and again, as Toni kept talking), of course I was worried about a full-term stillbirth. But as someone said above, we can't have a sad ending in the Christmas special.

I had a variation of the same thought. Mothers and babies do not die in the Christmas episode, but then I thought maybe this year will be the exception. They need to revisit the quadruplets later in the series. There is no way in 1968 babies (especially quadruplets) born 6 weeks premature all end up being perfectly healthy babies.

When Tim was allowed to assist/practice during the medical exam I wondered if the show will last long enough to see Tim actually join his father's practice.

  17. I couldn't quite pause at the exact right moment(s), so I am hoping someone can answer a few questions for me. When Ralphie and Randy go to Higbees to meet Santa, is Ralphie wearing a 3 piece suit? Did they make 3 piece suits for boys that young in 1940? (Ralphie is 9).

It does not look like Randy is wearing a three piece suit, but he is wearing a tie.

There's no way the Duke is moving to NYC.  The whole point of the arrangement is for him to live in the style he's accustomed to in his home.

This is one of the reasons why I think the Duke will die before the marriage.

I'd like for Larry & Marian to have a longer courting period and/or engagement, not just dive into marriage.  I think a married Larry & Marian would be rather dull and not add anything to the show.  Maybe Larry has to go abroad for business, drawing things out.  Or, have them marry in between seasons, and let them be on their Grand Tour honeymoon all of Season 3.

We/I absolutely need to see the wedding and the lead-up to it, but I would be okay with the two of them on a Grand Tour honeymoon for all or part of season 4.

  20. I think the Duke's storyline will go one of two ways. My predictions are not based on real actual history of the era but on the previous work of Julian Fellows.

Option 1: The Duke and Gladys will be engaged, but he will die in some type of tragic horrible accident before the wedding.

Option 2: The Duke and Gladys will marry and overtime, she will eventually fall in love with him.
