  1. hmmm. need to ponder the "whys" behind this side story. Kelly stayed with her mom while her other siblings went to live with dad in TN. Divorce was still a little rare 40 +/- years ago (50 - 9 - I think she said 3rd grade when the divorce happened), let alone the dad getting full custody of 3 children. And moved out of the state. I would think the "adults" in the situation would want the kids to grow up together.
  2. the dance battle is the march 14 episode (link)
  3. cooking 101 question: why did Sheldon think fish wouldn't stick to a grill? any grill? its not like he had pam spray. open flame grill has a way of making most food stick to some degree. I think if he could have found a way to "plate pretty" the fish he could salvage, that would have made a difference. has anyone noticed that this is the cheapest winnings of all of the top chef seasons? one year, elimination winners and some quick-fires were getting cars, large sums of cash, trips , cookware/tools. Hell even a bottle of wine or the guest judge's cookbook, can be a gift.
  4. On another dance show, part of the total score of the "battle" was something called a "choreographer's challenge". Basically a trained dancer (they normally recite their resume of whom they worked with) teaches a dance routine on the spot. The idea is to simulate a real dance audition . The winner is the one who does it best. I'm sure in the fitness/Zumba/low-impact genre, there are equal counterparts (with a resume), who could do the same. It would be nice during the "dance battle" there would be a component of each - trained dance and a fitness routine "challenge" with just Whitney and Jiya - no "fill-ins" from Whit's open casting call and no OLG, from Jiya studio. Speaking of Whit's cast of characters, I'm getting tired of her group being composed of a odd set of people. 2-3 episodes ago, there was a teenager doing cartwheels/backflips across the stage. Is she trying to incorporate cheer? I was just odd, the stunting didn't add anything to the routine and I'm sure the teen had better things to do. Whit big mouth (meaning her voice carries) and her constant arm waving actually might could pull-off a decent non-stunting cheer routine with poms - "2-4-6-8... who do you appreciate..."
  5. thanks for the background story. why would you hang anything on your wall that you didn't know what/who/its origin was. hmmm.. Still teaching! That's impressive. I too am from a graduating high school class of the early 1980s. ?
  6. Huh ??? I'm trying to remember what their original house looked like - before the Duggers re-modeled it as it looks like today..
  7. RE: the k-12 home-school lessons/pgm, that Kelly does (or uses as a base guideline), has there been any students who went on to a regular, fully accredited, 4 yr brick and mortar university to earn professional (RN-nurse, licensed k-12 teacher, accountant, engineer, journalism, pre-law/pre-med, etc) degree ? I am trying to figure out are they not allowed to attend OR allowed to, and choose not to, OR are they not academically prepared to do so. I think the counterparts in Ark. aren't academically ready. There's a couple in that crew I think would struggle taking the SAT/ACT. I'm not saying they have to go to an Ivy-league university, but they wear the University of TN/AR gear, probably more than some alumni do. Do they earn a high school diploma underwritten from the homeschool pgm, or the district they live in ? I kinda got the impression that they take something like the GED test.
  8. Hold up.. one of John's sisters married one of Brandon's (Michaela husband) brothers ? And back to this episode for a quick minute - how many old high school teachers did Kelly meet with ?
  9. I think she learned from her personal experience and one of her previous jobs : "She is a former employee of the City of Jackson where she worked as a Recreation Aide and the Dance Instructor for the entire North side of Jackson" (link)
  10. Agree. I thought the very same thing when I first heard Gil's early-life story from Papa Bill . I think it was the 1hr thanksgiving episode . Gil was the school "jock" . Excelled and did well in multiple sports. ran miles on the rural road to keep in shape. I'm not sure if he played anything in college, though. Now fast forward, and he has 9 sons. And Gil wanted them to "focus on the Lord" and not sports. I think it was his brother who said that. I know this is a stereotype, so I apologize if I offend - but most dads, who were the "star" in a sport, at least would want their sons (and probably their daughters) to at least try out for something and probably would be glad to coach the team. Even Jeb/Judson, would be on a t-ball/ rec soccer team of the guys I know. And I don't know why Gil would think a person couldn't be godly and play a sport at the same time. What does that say about of all of the prep/college/professional athletes - they're not godly ? I felt bad for the older boys, especially Zach who was a little out of shape at the time, wasn't given the opportunity to at least play a sport. I'm pretty sure homeschool kids have the option of trying out for their attendance-area school(s) sports team - I know that was on the agenda of our school board meeting years back.
  11. Or buy in first/business class. Which means some flights/airlines might not be able to accommodate. With Whit leaving/going to Greensboro, I don't think every airline flies a major-major aircraft there.
  12. I'm amazed that Kelly's teachers were "available" for a visit. I haven't see the show yet - how many teachers did Kelly visit with ? If she is 50, which means she graduated appx. 32 years ago, (50-18) , right ? So her youngest teacher, would have to just started their career after college, appx. 22 (18 + 4 yrs of college) + 32, that is 54. I guess I am thinking back, I didn't have that many early-in-career teachers in high school - early career teachers seem to be in elementary . I went to a large city public school system, where I wouldn't be surprised, if there were a lot of politics/seniority to teach certain classes, like algebra, chemistry, American authors (English), so you could get the "better" (academic and behavior) students. Back then you could get out of high school, with just general math/geometry - meaning not everyone took algebra. Even in today's HS world, I don't think the newly college grads are teaching classes like the APs. Sad, to say, I don't think I could call the roll, on this side of heaven, of some (most) of my HS teachers, today. Let me find my HS yearbook. I guess this episode is a testimony to people are living much longer now.
  13. Good theory. If so, TLC and UPN is the wrong network for Jiya. Jiya's style is a little too abrasive and provocative for TLC. TLC wants the viewer to be sad/sorry for the main character(s). In Jiya's case - I feel more sorry for her OLGs..."girl you better touch those ankles... you better get low..". If not, she be the first to tell someone, exit stage left. Now, if Jiya has some long dark backstory/sob-story, then maybe. She would be a better spin-off from one of the RHO* shows . I can see her being the personal trainer for one of the RHO* wives , trying to spice up her body and marriage. Or the RHO* wives taking a class at her center. She might also have more viewership following the Little Woman <city> on Lifetime.
  14. I said this about another offspring embarking on a singing career that bears repeating here.. It must be a hard conversation for an parent , who has made it a strong-personal mission to let their child attempt to enter into the entertainment industry, to later tell their child that they don't have "it".... "Baby you know I luv' you... but you can't _____ and need to pursue something else". There was a look on Gill's face for a slight second ( 24 min in) that said a little more than "I'm a proud papa". Kinda a look of "huh/concern" .it was after the verse "who let the truther in rough clothes and tough drinks on his breath..." (1) didn't know truther was a valid word... (2) what does Lawson know about "tough drinks on someone's breath" ? When one is early in their career, it is better if they sing songs from their heart/experiences. Probably not many folks in the audience have had a "tough drink". Lawson has enough friends and siblings to help out with stuff like lighting and overall show management. Actually being in a church, you would think the church would had someone working the lights.
  15. so what in the hell does Whit do when they are not filming ? the radio thing is new this season and part time, right ? Is the radio station/morning team real ?
  16. If twerking isn't a dance movement (link), or the name of a dance movement, what's a better way to describe it ? I guess I'm thinking back to that scene in Forrest Grump, when Elvis was doing the twist (link). Prior to that, people probably thought that the "twist" was something to do to the lid of a jar. And yes, Jiya's style and classes is more for a "provocative grown women". But you can almost say the same of majorette hip-hop, especially on the collegiate level. FYI: There was a routine about 5 years ago that the DCC did incorporate twerking into their main "star" routine, and the song was "Shakin' That Tailgate" by Trailer Choir. I thought the routine was classy and entertaining (link).
  17. Jija is in Charlotte. Whit is in Greensboro. that's about 1.5 hrs away. I don't think the participants in Whit class are looking for that much of a challenge in terms of dance. If fitness is the motivation, then I.m sure there's local health club/community ctr/church/ymca who has a Zumba or low-impact class who could do a better job meeting long term goals. The draw with Whits class is there is probably no or little monthly membership fee. But if they are doing the "fitness-dance" to get in shape, tone, and/or lose weight, 30 days in should be telling that Whit's program isn't the one. I'm still not convinced she is raising heart rates long enough - does anyone in the class wear a heath-watch-monitor ? If "dance" was their motivation, they would have jumped off of Whit's ship a long time ago. Hell, they could learn more dance moves by watching tv, youtube or getting a dvd.
  18. Agee. I'm all for exposing Whit to her limitations, but the producers should have picked a more realistic dance/fitness troupe. I think even if Whit was at her "best" , her make-shift group, skill level and style, is too different from Jiya and her OLG (the 3 ladies that came with her to Whit's class). In a dance off- both competitors are doing the same genre w/ rules & guidelines- otherwise its too hard to judge. Jiya strikes me as the type of teacher who if she had booked a performance would only want those who are the best (i.e. learn fast) entertainers and dedicated (come all of time & on-time) to the show- meaning she will cut. When Jiya said to "touch your ankles" , she meant it. I personally wouldn't try to fake-out or not dance full-out . You're playing with the wrong one... Whit's personality is she will take whomever shows up, for the little rehearsals she has and "come up" with the least to meet a deadline so her dancers can feel good about themselves. Whit treats all her events as glorified field trips w/in the community. Last week, the audience was so small made me wonder if the group is even inviting their own immediate family/friends to come watch them parade around with flannel shirts tied around their waist. Whit is too worried about being "seen" as opposed to worrying about entertaining those is seeing her.
  19. thanks for the replies/answers. I have never owned a cat but that I what I was thinking. Actually, when my sister's cat didn't use the box a few times in succession, it turned out to be an early sign of an illness. She said the cat never missed going in the box, so she knew something was up right away.
  20. Cat owners/lovers - Don't cats self-train themselves to use a litter box? I've heard of paper-training dogs.. What's worse she couldn't smell it ? Nasty !!!
  21. hip hop moves?.. I knew Whit wasn't going to attempt to do it.. Took all of 13 minutes. Knee injury ?? If that is true, why come to class and take the floor? Come when you're healthy or come and watch from the sidelines.
  22. Duggars feed on the last minute drama and tasks. I'm not a professional baker, but for a naked cake ( one w/o frosting) I do think you can bake and freeze the layers ahead of time and put the berries on close to serving time. Berries might run, if they are on a cake too long. Cupcakes I know you can do ahead of time. Here's their cake , curtesy of people magazine. Did they have only the one cake? Sorry, I know its traditional and looks pretty but I don't like real flowers on a cake. put them in a pretty arrangement on the table.
  23. I haven't watched the episode yet... was there a cheese table ? :) and Babe is a little older and his family probably has their own expectations and traditions. Also his friends - ie the one who requested the cheese table.
  24. Yeah, they need to recast. I guess that was the whole point of bringing in Kim Fields last season, but that was a disaster. RHOA was #3 on my list and I don't record it. It comes on too much to waste DVR space. I caught last night in its entirety by accident. I like the shows that follow - First Family of Hip Hop and the now-moved-to-Friday, Married with Medicine. Jersey was better last season - Teresa has changed due to her & Joe's prison sentence and finding yoga. And I think the shows are better when there is a reason for some members the cast to be together - related or work/business. Potomac was my favorite - hopefully it returns back in the same matter as it went into hiatus.
  25. LOL !! Yes, I also can do without the exaggerated version of parental exploits. "Yeah.. your daddy/significant other and I ...... {fill in the blank}...". The kids know how they got here, but I think they can do without the play-by-play and detailed-triple-X how-to's.
