  1. Is it part time? She seems to work very long hours - I remember the episode where she got the job that she wasn't going to get home until 6 (which I totally question) but I do agree with your point that people relocate mostly for the major breadwinner which George certainly would be. I doubt the church job would pay much more than whatever minimum wage would have been at the time.
  2. I don't do lit searches for university scientists so I can totally see there would be a different approach especially if you're getting grad students to do your grunt work and not the librarians at the university!
  3. I'm positive that they are still married when George dies. There are numerous mentions in BBT that indicate this but I think the biggest reason they don't divorce is Mary. It's just not something she would have done. They may end up separating (although again it sounds like George was sleeping with his girlfriends in the marital bed - bastard) so perhaps not. Anyway I guess what it comes down to is George dies before they make any kind of final break in the marriage.
  4. Another librarian chiming in and I have to say the only thing I found implausible was Raj digging deeper for that citation. When I do literature searches for researchers it's already a time consuming task (depending on what they want) and if I went down every rabbit hole and looked up all the citations connected to articles I am selecting it would be a neverending task! Article one has citations (sometimes many many citations), I check the citations -- look at those articles, check their citations (again sometimes many many citations)--look at these articles, check their citations -- lather rinse repeat....oh my good god NO!! I will check if one looks really relevant, and in fairness that may be what happened with Raj but since he couldn't understand the language I think it unlikely  it's a sitcom and certainly not the first time they've had work related stuff make no sense. At least they didn't have a stereotypical librarian in a bun, cardigan and sensible shoes shushing them!
  5. Absolutely. I did a lot of relocating for my husband's career but we (the kids and I) were very much on board with it and enjoyed it thoroughly. But we met a lot of expats over the years and some of the women we met (rarely came across a family relocating for her job - mostly always for his) were very resentful. They missed their families back home, missed the lives they had led and were basically marking time until they could get back home. Expecting Mary to be excited about a move away from her hometown, away from her Mother and away from her church and job was a big stretch. And George buying that car? What was that all about? It seemed to me like he was choosing a swinging "me, me, me" life over his family. And then in the end he chose the family. So George is conflicted? Middle life crisis? Found this whole episode unsatisfying and confusing.
  6. I had that same feeling in this episode. To be fair though there have been moments in earlier episodes where it does seem like they are showing the negative side of George (the episode where the twins are in that study and he wants to use the money they are being paid to buy a boat as one example) but overall I do get the feeling that they are going to make George a drunk who sleeps around and they're going to make damn sure we all know it's Mary's fault. This is Chuck Lorre show when all is said and done. And if they really do do that like others have said then I'm done.
  7. A second bathroom is definitely better but I can't get over these house hunter shows with young buyers who demand a 3,000 sq ft house and at least 3 bathrooms. In their starter home. I should have been so lucky!
  8. My point wasn't to compare The Conners but to point out that this exact storyline played out very recently and I would hope even if you or I haven't watched that other sitcom that the people writing for The Conners are aware of significant storylines that have been used in the past few years. I can absolutely guarantee you that sharp-eyed fans and even more especially sharp-eyed The Conners haters would be all over it if The Conners does a teenage pregnancy-leads to adoption storyline. The Conners gets enough undeserved (IMO) crap already without going there. Anyway I totally agree that an abortion storyline would not work well either - acknowledging abortion as an option, yep, I can see them going there, actually following through though, well I'd be very surprised.
  9. Absolutely agree with this but I do think it's good that DJ seems to be at least reasonably doing ok. It's bad enough that Becky seems to have stayed in a downward spiral since the original series ended and that they had to make Darlene down on her luck to explain her coming back to Lanford, if they make DJ's life messed up too would that be more sadness and misery than a hard core fan could take?
  10. I don't agree, she was hurt and given the way they've written the show so that all the main characters completely revolve around each other it's no wonder - and that episode you reference was IMO a typical driveby BBT thing where they did something for the sake of one episode.
  11. Crossing over from the Christmas movies thread to say I finally saw Christmas in Evergreen and it's going into my top 5 fave list. Well at least until I get a chance to see this years crop of new Hallmarks. But what a refreshing change of pace - pleasant leads who are just basically nice people, plausible reason for the male to want to avoid Christmas, kid actress who was cute without being annoying, excellent supporting cast - and ok I'l admit it, a gorgeous little town that made me want to move to Vermont!
  12. Oh wow, Christmas in Evergreen -- so good! The leads were awesome, supporting cast where great, and I loved that the two main characters were just so gosh darn nice!
  13. Didn't that happen on Mom? Not a show I watched but I'm pretty sure I read about that story arc. Hopefully The Conners won't make the mistake of taking storylines whole cloth from such recent shows! I hope so too even though in a way this reminds me of the whole "main character dies on Modern Family" thing and then after getting the fans all curious it turns out they killed off a character that rarely appears on the show, Sure it was a "significant" character in one sense but no way would I describe her as a main character. If shows are going to tease us with "oh you'll NEVER believe the twist that's coming" I think it should actually be a twist and not a married woman getting pregnant by her husband or a rarely seen character dying!
  14. I wish in many ways that they'd left Darlene as successful - or at least working in her field anyway - but I get that this wouldn't have given her a reason to move back to Lanford. But my one criticism of Roseanne is now my one criticism of The Conners, they cannot catch a break!
  15. I think when it crossed over from being a spur of the moment thing and became a planned event complete with a bag of wine that's when it was time to ask Amy. These people are close. Way closer than most friends - hey it's a sitcom with their interactions at the core, no way was Amy not going to find out about the play house get togethers - and of course she did. Maybe Bernadette and Penny should be able to do things without Amy but it should come as no surprise, and it didn't, that she'd want to be included and be hurt that she wasn't.
  16. My husband and I almost ordered out for wings! I'm not usually that easily led with food on TV shows but man I agree those wings looked good!!
  17. Unfortunately I don't get the Hallmark Channel, not sure if that's unique to my area or if most Canadian markets don't carry it. I get my Hallmark movie fix from the W Channel. I'm going to check again and see if it's on their schedule and I missed seeing it.
  18. I saw Journey Back to Christmas last year and enjoyed it. I've liked most of Candace Cameron Bure's holiday movies. Not so keen on that Switched for Christmas one (or whatever it was called) and I don't see that one n the schedule here so far. The one she was in I really liked was called A Christmas Detour. I'm not seeing that one scheduled so far either. I guess the problem is there are so many Christmas movies and not enough air time, But honestly in these days of PVRs is there any reason why they keep showing the same movies over and over again? Can't they show a larger selection less often? Or does that not make sense?
  19. I think I get what you're saying and I agree - parents shouldn't be messing with their little kids heads and trying to force them to be what a parent might want them to be. But seriously? Is this a big issue where you are? Because I can count on no fingers on any hand a circumstance where I've encountered a parent trying to claim their young child is trans. Any parent doing something like this probably has some issues of their own and consent issues are the least of the problem. But, again, since I doubt this is happening, or certainly not happening anywhere near often enough to even register as a cause for concern I won't be losing sleep over it.
  20. Just watched a flip show where they took what they called a Craftsman house that was at least 100 years old and basically turned it into just another open concept 2018 bungalow. To be fair the house was a mess and they were pretty much building a new house but it was too bad that they decided to just build, at least inside, what was essentially every house you see on these shows right now. Walls have got to go! What made me laugh was they said they were going for a vintage look in the bathroom so of course they put on a barn door. Yes. That was certainly part of the yesteryear charm that you find in 100 year old houses.
  21. I know you're joking but I wanted to jump off your post to say that I don't think any of Sheldon's memories of his childhood are revisionist history. They're the way he remembers that things happened - which on YS is really cute as we can see what actually happened and then hear Sheldon's voice over interpreting it as he remembers it. And it's not always the same, but, the actual incident happened. I don't really see how they can reconcile the memories Sheldon has with regard to things he witnessed and heard about his parents marriage with him filtering things in his own head to make himself look good (which is usually what has been happening on YS). If they try to do that I think they risk a real backlash from BBT fans who will still be watching the show in reruns. Not that they will care about that I guess if they can still bring in the viewers and the advertisers!
  22. Totally agree! When they say cookie cutter they really mean "don't want Mom's house". In 20 years their house will be "Mom's house" and their own kids will be rebelling against cookie cutter!
  23. We had what they called a "great room" back in the '90s so the open concept idea has been around for new builds at least since around then but as was referenced above the great room was essentially the family room rolled in with the kitchen (my mother informed me at the time that having a sofa in a kitchen wasn't exactly new - her own grandmother had it back in the '30s) but anyway we also had a separate living room that was very private (comparatively speaking) and this was the room anyone coming to the door would have seen and could have been "entertained" in. Like others I cannot begin to imagine living in a goldfish bowl where anyone coming to the door can see my pots and pans in the sink and the debris field known as "prepping a meal" all over the counters!
  24. Was your memo similar to the one on The Conners? I hear in the news about schools being very particular about what kids can and cannot wear for Halloween at school but I've never personally dealt with it before. I totally get no blackface and no costumes that insult another culture but if you can't even go as a clown or anything scary (as per this episode) that eliminates a lot of choices. Anyway I don't really have a problem with a school making rules about what kids can wear to school events - Dan went off the rails acting like the kids couldn't go out for Halloween dressed as they pleased, It was very specific to the school and as long as everyone has to follow the rules and they aren't picking and choosing based on rules they aren't telling anyone until the kid shows up then I can accept that.
  25. This is the first one I could convince my husband to watch. He was hooked when Jackie was describing her drive with Harris.
