  1. Oops wrong movie. I have to hunt down the one you saw. I didn’t realize they had a new noir this week.
  2. I don’t know of any Yiddish word for these boats
  3. I saw it a while ago. It was not bad.
  4. OMG, I love Jamie/The Anti Chef. He's so endearing and entertaining, yet also informative.
  5. Expert bakers, please weigh in: My Hamantaschen cookie dough always crumbles as I try to bend it into the triangle shapes. This is a butter based dough. I wish I knew how to fix this. Possibly more liquid? Less flour? The recipe is Breads Bakery Hamantaschen. Their hamantaschen is famous. Granted, I have not tried it with the recommended pastry flour, as I wouldn't be able to find it easily. That obviously affects the texture. https://www.breadsbakery.com/hamantaschen/
  6. Sorry, no great ideas. At the moment we have Wish Bone blue cheese dressing in the fridge. We also like Marie's. That's the one sold in the refrigerator case near the salad produce.
  7. Getting ready to make Hamantaschen.
  8. Well, I gave it a try, wondering why I had never watched it. It’s not shown that often. I’m afraid I’m with the received wisdom. It’s a curiosity rather than a good movie. Cornel Wilde had no appeal whatsoever. Couldn’t they find someone better, considering this was a high budget production with a huge audience at stake, given the popularity of the novel? As a couple they had no connection. There’s the obvious comparison to GWTW, which is also episodic, but the characters had such emotional depth. Linda Darnell, who is great in Letter to Three Wives, was just adequate here. She’s no Vivien Leigh, and she couldn’t carry this confusing mess. I don’t even know when she managed to sleep with Bruce, that’s how sanitized this was, as he kept rejecting her. Even her little son rejects her in the end. George Sanders played George Sanders, which was a bright spot. As for George Sanders, I’m checking out Cairo, which bills itself as a remake of The Asphalt Jungle. Sanders is the mastermind behind the “foolproof” plot to steal King Tut’s jewels. Sure, thats a great idea. Anyway, good Egyptian noir fun so far. It’s always fun to see the mastermind assemble his crew in a heist movie.
  9. I have not reread this, but I recently watched both movie versions, both excellent. I did instead read for the first time The Return of the Native. It’s kind of a slog. Hardy is not at his best here. It’s an unrealistic melodrama with cipher characters and overwrought language.
  10. Here's a really interesting article about Wiseman. https://forward.com/culture/570827/frederick-wiseman-menus-plaisirs-les-troisgros/
  11. I'm back with an OT recommendation. I am caught up in the new Frederick Wiseman documentary on PBS. If you missed it (I recorded it last night), they will show it again next week and it's on PBS on demand probably for a short time. I figure the people who follow TCM might also be Frederick Wiseman fans (I remember people here like the Maysles Brothers films, which are shown on TCM. Wiseman always shows on PBS.) This one is about the Troisgros restaurant in France.
  12. Later we will probably watch the remake of Road House. Should be good for a laugh.
  13. I’m watching a four-hour Frederick Wiseman documentary I recorded on PBS. I can watch in spurts. I love Frederick Wiseman. For those who will say Who is Frederick Wiseman? He keeps on producing a masterpiece every year or so of his special fly on the wall observation technique. He’s in his 90s now. They always show them on PBS after small theatrical releases. No narration. This one is about the Troisgros restaurant in France. Highly recommended for those who would appreciate this brand of film artistry. I saw my first one, High School, when I was in high school. More than fifty years ago. I have been following him ever since.
  14. It appears he won something called a Golden Boot award. An honor for westerns.
  15. I’m a fan of jigsaw puzzles. Some people think it’s cheating if you look at the box picture. I don't agree. Ann-Margret’s character cheats at jigsaw puzzles by cutting the pieces to fit! It’s a small spoiler to note this is a skillful use of foreshadowing. Cheating is the theme of Cincinnati Kid. Both at cards and in marriage.
  16. Norman Jewison Day: Caught the last third of Moonstruck. Always fun. I just read that Jewison wanted to cast Cher based on her great comic timing from the old Sonny and Cher Show. Rewatched Fiddler. Since we had so much discussion of Pride and Prejudice recently, I was struck that Tevye and Mr. Bennet had the same plight: Five daughters and no dowry. Mr. Collins = Lazar Wolf. First time watch of The Cincinnati Kid. Every performance is outstanding. Ann-Margret. Ann-Margret’s cleavage as a separate character. Edward G. Robinson Steve McQueen Karl Malden Rip Torn, and those smaller roles. Can someone tell me the name of the actor who played the menacing poker player in the opening scene?
  17. FWIW I have had good luck with the Terro liquid ant baits. I use them every spring for our Long Island house. There’s an annual invasion. We have not had that paradoxical reaction of more ants coming
  18. I too voted for keeping separate, for reasons you all stated.
  19. This case was ripped from the headlines in a different way. Not sure if you are aware of the subway choke defendant, also with the hero headlines. This happened last year. A white ex Marine choked a black man to death. The victim was a gay mentally ill individual. The real case is still awaiting trial. Alleged that he was saving people from a dangerous individual, but the DA brought charges. like the George Floyd case he likely held the choke too long. It’s a very disturbing case. This was utterly ridiculous with how they produced the surprise witness. Where was she all that time? And once again they stop in the middle of a trial and spend days developing a new theory? As usual, the investigation half was better than the trial half.
  20. I didn't watch the super size episode, but I would be surprised if they cut the fall. It lasted for so many minutes, and it was so dramatic and important to the story. Yes it was voyeurism porn, but it was also great TV.
  21. Yes, I neglected to mention Mimieux and Dean Martin. One commentary I saw suggested George Hamilton might have been a better choice. That would have paired Mimieux with a two-time costar (Where the Boys Are and Light in the Piazza). I was thinking she was playing very Piazza here.
  22. She really did lose that first 73 pounds in a short time. She finally started doing the program correctly. Then they skipped the second checkup/goal and went right to surgery, since they were running out of time, but she had succeeded. But they had to devote a lot of time to that fall in the back yard and the disabled vehicle. The fall in the back yard was something else. I can't stand those weigh ins where they have the scale going back and forth interminably before showing the number and then when they cut to commercial and repeat that sequence before showing the number. Puh-leeze.
  23. This is a very large and active small talk thread, more than any other I have seen for a specific show. My understanding from historical memory is that when a show forum was created they always created a small talk thread for interpersonal chatting that was not about the episode. In the case of this forum People who had a fundie background often commented on episodes with a comparison to their own experience, and they were usually directed to this thread. Over time the small talk has expanded to so many other topics and real friendly sharing, especially since there are no more new episodes. I would hate to see this go. however the chit chat thread is similar and has some crossover participants. I think anyone would be welcome there.
  24. @shapeshifter for one reason I didn’t think of cross race effect, which is that I assumed the little friend knew the owner well from seeing him frequently. So I’m still left with confusion. I thought the little friend identified him not from a photo array but from actual knowledge.
