S10.E03: Mulder And Scully Meet The Were-Monster
GinevradiBenci replied to AntiBeeSpray's topic in The X-Files [V]
I had a big stupid grin on my face the whole episode. Even if the rest of the episodes are terrible, terrible things, the revival will have been worth it for this one.- 249 replies

I think this links in to the study that was done where a group of men were interviewed, and as long as the word "rape" was never used, they would describe a situation that was them committing rape. Kilgrave's self image doesn't allow that word to apply to him, no matter how justified it is.

I'm enjoying this show so far - I don't watch any of the Shonda shows that apparently make up a lot of this show's DNA so I'm not burnt out on the style. But, wow, I need to learn to not expect this show to make much sense. It's all just vague sinister hints and really pretty people. I'm ok with that, at least for now. But it does not make one damn bit of sense.

This whole show has been a love story between Hannibal and Will from very early on. And really, what happened on screen was, in this particular world's emotional lexicon, a lot more intimate than a kiss. I'm also a little bit dismayed by the end-of-credits scene. I know that when it all was filmed they were still hoping to come back for another season but I feel like the Thelma and Louise ending just worked better.

This was a beautiful episode, and fun to watch despite knowing that the Olympians were done for pretty early on. But mostly, what tickled me was the fact that Blair and Haley have built a really great brother-sister relationship, and are now at the point where they can jibe at each other and not take it too personally. They still get on each other's nerves but it's more like two kids swatting at each other in the back of a station wagon than anything else. Blair's glee at Haley's crush on the pilot was really cute.

I am satisfied. And going to miss this show like hell. We decided to cut our cable so I watched this episode slowly pacing on a treadmill, completely captivated.

Adam might have been able to pull something safe off if his out-there design had been a better one, but it was not only a very distant take on the assignment but it was also kind of crappy design all on its own. It looked goofy, not terrifying. Emily and Darla did such good work, but none of the others did much for me. I agree that the wooden dummy looked a lot more like a stereotypical 1950s jock and the costuming added to that.

S02.E14: Love In The Time Of Hydra
GinevradiBenci replied to Cranberry's topic in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Oh yeah, this is definitely the MCU's Madam Masque origin story. They had Talbot say "the mask" and "that mask" several times, and then threw in "masquerading" on top of it - just a little overemphasis to point it out. -
Yeah, the only place I know it from is a skit from In Living Color. I don't think it's out much in the world anymore.

Hah, I'm fairly sure Boyd and Ava's new names were not "au fait" but rather "ofay.

S26.E03: #MurphysLaw (Phuket, Thailand)
GinevradiBenci replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Amazing Race
She said something like it in the introduction when the teams were first meeting. Paraphrasing, but it was along the lines of, "I thought, oh my gosh, what if my partner doesn't like silly little blondes?" I remember it because it made me feel icky. -
Agent Carter vs Agents of Shield: Which Show is Better?
GinevradiBenci replied to nottopbravo's topic in Agent Carter [V]
I'm pretty solidly a fan of both. I think Agent Carter benefited greatly from having a set 8 episodes to get in, tell a story, and get out, and probably more shows could benefit from that kind of treatment. Agent Carter has a lot of charm and is probably the better show between the two, but SHIELD has been doing some captivating storytelling and I'm eager to see where we're going when the show returns. I want both, and don't feel like I have to pick one over the other. -
As far as I can tell the room and all the books in it were holographic like Jefferson, which is why he could pick stuff up and why they couldn't take books out. I suppose it means that if they were able to use the room as a resource, Jefferson would have to turn the pages of the books for them! Why not come back with heavier weapons, shoot all the mole men in the tunnel, and return to use the chamber as needed? I think the reporter's character introduction suffered a little bit from giving him two big motivations: Save! my brother and Discover! the story. It meant that his drive to be a journalist upstaged his worry as a brother at a few points.I wish Abby had just said, "We're biblical witnesses who are here to stop the apocalypse, people in town are usually killed by demons or evil witches, and my buddy here used to knock drinks back with George Washington. Go ahead and print it, see what happens."

Mr. Carter: The Secret Future Husband
GinevradiBenci replied to Snarkette's topic in Agent Carter [V]
I don't know where they're going with Sousa - antagonist is an interesting choice, but they could also do something with the "desire to prove oneself" theme that they've had working with both him and Peggy. If he believes he's found a traitor in the ranks, he might not stop to listen to her explanations if he things bringing her in will get him more respect. I don't see it going that way, but it could be interesting. I...kinda shouldn't have gone on the Agent Carter Tumblr tag because they really, really hate Thompson there. I can't see how writing him off as a sexist, ableist jerk who doesn't deserve any screentime does the story that's unfolding any good. He's been more than that from the start and whether or not he's Mr. Peggy, his character is being handled pretty well and adds some shading and dimension. I think it'll be hard for me to see Peggy with anyone for a while longer. Although I might be good with pairing her up with Dum-Dum Doogan! -
In a book written by one of the Band of Brothers guys, he mentions having German soldiers say, essentially, "Well, gosh, you got us, but wouldn't it be a good idea for us to join forces and go defeat the Soviets? You see where this is going, right?" So I suspect that the US looked sideways at the Soviets despite their status as allies. I think things went very quickly south for that relationship.

Mr. Carter: The Secret Future Husband
GinevradiBenci replied to Snarkette's topic in Agent Carter [V]
I have no pre-existing CMM trauma beyond vaguely knowing he was part of a show I never watched, but I'm one of the people who wouldn't be put off by him ultimately being the love interest. I don't see it as "jerk tamed by love" but instead, "I was wrong and it's glorious." I think part of it is the fact that he's the one of the guys who seems the most competent at his job, and I think his drunken discussion with Peggy about feminism hints at something potentially deep and interesting, not that he's just another sexist douchebag who was trying to put her in her place. -
Kitty: The Cousin Oliver of the Brownstone
GinevradiBenci replied to Gregg247's topic in Elementary [V]
I really like Kitty as well, and I like the dynamic she brings to the show. She's not a flat character. Also, she brings out other aspects of Joan and Sherlock, and their interactions with her also do a lot to add to their own characterizations. -
There's no way Irving is off the show, I just don't know how they'll bring him back from the dead. I thought we'd see it, actually. But he'll be back, as a horseman, or a spirit, or his soul will be stuffed back in his body by James Madison's best silver fish fork that is also a soul catcher. I'm not entirely certain I'll be around to watch it, though. The show went from a great ride to boring and now to incoherent. I'm not sure the few moments of fun will bring me back when the show returns.

Brooke is not always a nice person and she's totally a defeatist, but she cracks me the hell up. I continue to love this season. They really did well casting an assorted group of people who are fun to watch - a mixed blend of sweet and sour and salty.

For all the padding that has happened this season, this ep was super crammed. If they had parceled out some of the "Mamma Mills was crazy" stuff - maybe put the Jenny in the car with the exhaust scene in an earlier episode - it would have been much more powerful to see in this ep that it was actually a demonic attack. Instead it had to be brought up and then reversed in the span of about twenty minutes. I feel like the Mills family story deserved more room in the show than a few mentions and then one very crammed episode. It was good to see the sisters working together again, but boy, did it highlight just how unimportant Hawley is - here, hold this flashlight! I'd like the tv show to have more characters (that don't just get bumped off five seconds after they appear), more room, more something, but since they apparently can't add a character without sidelining a different one, maybe I should watch what I wish for. And you know, I am officially sorry for Katia Winter. She does not deserve the shitty writing they have given her. Here's an episode where she actually starts doing something witchy, but then not only fails in the one job she's there to do, but Jenny gets to step up and do something cool and witchy herself. Why do they insist on handing out similar character traits to multiple people on the show?

I'm pretty sure that it's thanks to the Weavers that my husband and I have now declared Lake Pontchartrain one of the Great Lakes.

S25.E07: Pretty Fly For A Food Scientist
GinevradiBenci replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Amazing Race
This was such a fun episode, and the best cast that they've had on TAR in a while. I really like everybody - Brooke won me over when she realized that Maya had to rerun her go-cart leg and was so giddy about it. Of course she was! it was proof that her team had caught up despite a disappointing morning of taxi tragedy and I've had danced a jig. I'm not watching this show to see everybody perform some sort of hyperaware good behavior for the benefit of the camera, I just ask that teams don't act like gigantic jerkfaces or worse (looking at you, Jonathan,) Which is also why I'm fine with the Bikers and the Dentists - whatever competition they have, it's clearly not too serious, and they are perfectly capable of working together without problems. Jim and his wife are not people I'd be best friends with, and the bodybuilder aspect is not one I particularly admire, but they're nice enough. The Bikers are a little bit obnoxious with the "Take time from the exhausting race to party in the street, dude!" business, but whatever, they're fine and funny also. I'm so glad the show can have such a fun season so late in its life. -
I really enjoyed this episode. I don't mind Kitty - I think they're handling her well enough and she's not a moody young woman because she's a moody young woman - it's not just a character decision, it's obviously going to feature in the plot somehow. I'm fine with that.

Where is Jenny? Seriously, where is she? Why is Irving stranded in this go-nowhere plot? Why were we stuck with this beyond-hackneyed demonspawn plotline? Would a better actress save the character of Katrina or was the character doomed from the start due to bad planning? I have so many questions.
