Tiny House Hunters - General Discussion
debraran replied to Fabricationary's topic in Tiny House Hunters
Yes, the bucket/grey water is not a pleasant thought, but to each his own. I still find it fascinating that people have money to spend on a home and not have a place for it. The ones with lots of land on parents or friends property is fine, but I always feel it is also a way of having the best of both worlds...going crazy, go to Mom's for a day or two. ; ) This is the beach home for sale now, but they never really stayed in it or for very long. http://tinyhouselistings.com/listing/goleta-ca-santa-barbara-12-tiny-beachnature-house/ -
Tiny House Hunters - General Discussion

Yes, her blog is quite extensive. It echos a little of what I read before, a very staged, obviously, but interesting experience.I didn't realize that many homes are not for sale or rentals and the entire focus is what they end up with. I guess I never gave it that much thought, so don't contact fake realtor about a home you saw there. ; ) THN participants have had less blogs/interviews, but some have given interviews early on, some happy, some not. I think they might have changed their contracts a bit. One young woman who will have her tiny house show in May, said on FB that they aren't allowed to show house early and talk about it, but as we've seen, many are not even in them in 6 months. The surfer house is for sale now too! -
Another for sale, beach house, guess it's going to be Tiny House flipping now.

I was confused because although a lot of the show is staged, I thought from so many interviews with participants, you had to have some or all the base money up front and they would give upgrades for free. Many of the people on have already started building their home and they make it seem like it's from the start, others maybe not. I can't imagine they are hard up for people to be on that they did a home for free for someone with a promise to pay....not saying what was stated wasn't true, but people do lie on the internet and sometimes it gets exaggerated. I feel he didn't understand the zoning laws but I also fault the builders and show if they don't get the participants knowledge in writing. Too many seem clueless about not finding places to park home, etc. even traveling. I understand the need to have so many shows done , but don't take advantage of a persons ignorance either, even if they should have more common sense.

Well, it's been a year, but this is what they said in an interview in Tennesee paper, they thought downsizing would free them up to do other things. http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/gallatin/2015/05/27/tiny-house-family-lives-less/28036003/ If you get by the popups, this is an from 2015 when they were in 3 months. I think in a f/up interview on FYI, the daughter said she missed her door and parents said they were working on it. If that wasn't her, it was another teenager. ; ) -
I saw this recently, don't know if land was an issue from the beginning. https://www.gofundme.com/sisclothing

Every Tiny House is different but I've read some had tanks, some used a hose at hookups to do dishes with cold water and most used compost toilets that don't use water. Zack Giffin said his tiny house doesn't have a shower....for some, it's not for the "delicate". ; ) -

I found this about a real Tiny House Hunter experience with filming, etc. https://elenahitstheroad.wordpress.com/2015/10/09/tiny-house-hunting-tv-style/ Interesting and exhausting experience. On the bottom of the page, under "related" is the experience of a real couple who made their tiny house and hit the road, but I wonder how much money you need to do that since you aren't really working. -

I wonder about Internet too when they are far from anyone else, having a space for computer is always mentioned. And what about any mail if you don't have a real address? -

My goodness many people in Europe live in small spaces, it's all they have and they survive. It's what you are told you need and some people feel claustrophobic in small spaces especially if they aren't used to it. I used to work with many wealthy people with large homes and most were never in them, I always found the really large homes, cold, but that's me. I think the sex comment was kind of out of place because it was obviously put in to make people laugh or listen, especially when said more than once. Sometimes I like to forget the staging and reality part of it, I was reading a lot of the homes shown on Tiny House Hunting aren't even for sale...but it is fun. -

Yes, I loved how the space really seemed to fit them, the son had room, storage in the headboard and other places seemed more than in recent tiny homes. I know the TH producers are always looking for people, they approach some who are building on their own and offer to finish (for a price) and check out requests on their web site. I just feel the need to fill the time slots make them just take people who really don't want a tiny home or understand the laws, etc. I don't mean to judge but I read so many gave up home "because they couldn't find a place to park it" Even John Weisbarth said in an interview one couple was still looking. How could you spend over 30,000 on a home and not know where to put it? Not my money but puzzling. -
I loved this store/home, thought it was functional and a way to find your customers with the ability to move. It's on Tiny House Listings for 50,000. http://tinyhouselistings.com/listing/atlanta-ga-12-serena-tiny-house/ With so many getting homes and leaving them so quickly, I find it hard to get involved in the process as a viewer but I guess it's their perogative to sell if they bought it with their own money. Life does give us curveballs at times but you also have the TH fame to help sell.

Oh to be fair, he meant off season. : ) But still, they need space during the winter too. Well, I've seen googling, that on their show, a few have left, some you just don't hear about, maybe they should have a "look back in a year" show. The Rocky Mt couple on Tiny House Nation had a lot of issues which is easily googled, leaks, no internet, etc and had to move out. The first family they did where they made a castle theme for their young daughter, left their home within a year I think. They couple where they made a roof deck has theirs for sale on Tiny House Listings. I heard the musician family left too, either pregnancy or other family issue. Some only want a few years, but I really think they feel, especially the young ones, it's like a doll house or fort but nicer. They should be required to live in one for a weekend and really go over every little thing that could go wrong. Downsizing is stressful, but so is not having space, adequate water pressure, laundry and a multitude of other things. I feel the tiny homes on foundations are more logical and probably have a higher success rate. -

One show John Wisbarth showed the couples how to put their winter coats in throw pillows instead of stuffing or foam. Made me laugh, "What throw pillow is my down jacket in dear?" : ) But seriously for kids, that kind of thing might be novel. One woman in an interview said her dad made her storage under her house and another used her station wagon for extra paper towels, etc. If you had land that you owned, a shed might work, -

I'm hormonal too, but the words, "too tiny" and "natural light" get way too much air time. One Tiny House show, if they said "so much natural light" one more time, I was going to shut it off. ; ) The family of 6 who looked at the 3 homes got a lot of flak but they also made the home very nice. The kids seem okay with it and they might have had their reasons. They seemed wealthy enough to own such a large home, maybe a little overdrawn and thinking it would get worse with tuition's, etc. I love the stairs. What I didn't get was the outhouse/cabin...who would even entertain that idea? How would the kids get to school? I think the show did that for effect, they do stage things and between us, do you REALLY think all the couples see is 3 homes and then have to decide? No sane person would part with their money on 3 choices, one always horrible. this is a facebook page from their blog:https://www.facebook.com/tinyhousefor6/ -
Your Hosts John & Zack: Framing the discussion
debraran replied to David T. Cole's topic in Tiny House Nation [V]
I think a great "extra" show would be going back and if family or couple was willing, after a year or so, showing the ones who succeeded and the ones who failed. Some weren't in long term but many left in less than a year...I heard one, in months. That is I suspect more wanting an idea vs reality or wanting to be on TV. I wish they'd mention how some get electricity or water and other issues that involve tiny homes. One couple in an interview, said their outlets could only have one appliance on at a time or it overheated, had smoke fill their home. Another said they had leaks, another had frozen pipes underneath her home (Zack mentioned that issue once) and her Dad wrapped them and the whole area under the house. The more information they give beyond downsizing, the better outcomes they will have. I saw youtubes called tiny house nation the first 24 that showed the couples real things going in the house, another reality moment. ; ) http://www.fyi.tv/shows/the-first-24/season-1/episode-10 One not on site The interviews later in articles are more realistic but I liked the first 24 for a peek into the homes without the props. -

Wow, another one? I thought she really liked it. I've seen the castle one for sale, the one with a roof deck (still for sale) and a couple of others. I'm sure some were sold and not on Tiny House listings. The house is the Rocky's isn't sold but they aren't living there, too many issues. Did you see it online? That's a big increase but I guess she wanted bargaining room. I think the one with the roof deck was about 20,000 more too. I think they feel the TH show would help with sales. -

Yes, the couple seemed very nice and the guy was thanking people on TH facebook page for kind words. I see them one day settling into one area and using the store as just a store but for now, it's a good starter. This Saturday is a photographer, I think they are hoping to get some variety in ideas. I just hope the "reality" part doesn't take over the actual reality of living in a tiny home and they have more success's than failures. I'm sure many have stayed but there have been many who sold within a year, it's really a live change long term. -
Spotlight was an excellent and true movie, but seeing the Catholic bashing (for lack of a better word) continue, to me seemed old. They have done it before, we know there are bad priests/religious and good guys. So many say SVU is getting tired, I hope they can keep new and on the edge stories coming. I also love how Carisi showed his faith amid the ruins. It was predictable but still had me tuning in...the 2wk break though, very long. I hope they don't make Olivia become an alcoholic especially with Noah. I know it's TV, but she isn't with him that often as it is with her job, to have her drinking in or out of the home would be painful to watch.

That is a good idea, My mom misses her old cape, but it was too much. Her senior facility is cold and boring, not much going on, people don't get to meet each other (5 or 6 floors) often. If she was able to have a small home with other small home owners, even a "senior rent' type of thing, would have been great, a community that would be easier to meet others. If you go to tiny house listings and put in 'tiny house nation" in search, it shows homes from the show, I think there are 2 now. http://tinyhouselistings.com/

I agree, you can have a much smaller footprint and still have a regular home. You are still saying that "excess" is wrong, but you can have personal space, something most of us need. It isn't Little House on the Prarie. :) I think they should have more with seniors (no lofts!) or young couples looking for a first home, maybe a veteran needing some special functions Zack could make. Showing the good and the bad will help their movement, not hurt it. Go back in a year and see how they fared in a special show, let others know what tripped them up, why it's not the play house you wanted as a kid, it's real and can get old fast. It can also be a great money saver if you have the zoning and means to do it.
-
This house was for sale, 2/16/16 but it sold fast, couldn't find it when someone showed me the link. Why doesn't anyone stay??
-
Any thoughts to who really is the culprit? Seems like if it is the priest, kind of anti-climatic. I read Fin is back to straighten things out.

Or having your kid in the loft and having to sleep with him to make sure he is safe (that would get old fast) they have previews of new season on their facebook page, did see some on wheels but a few looked larger, so I'm intrigued.
