Tiny House Hunters - General Discussion

Yes, I agree. Some tiny homes are built well for travel but some are more suited to stand alone. Different articles I have read from some TH owners , there was an ignorance about weight, towing, what to do if a tire blew or other mishap. I think RV owners are better prepared because what they wanted was more defined. Some of the tiny home new owners are looking at adult playhouses and that gets old. Zack's house is perfect for him, he does a lot of skiing and it's small, he built it and although minus a bathroom (!) he works that out with being near one. I think if you build it, it's like a part of you. And there's no getting around a wooden cedar home, with siding and wooden porch, french doors, is more visually appealing but practical, that's another story. -

Zack wasn't putting down RV's, but he said he lived in one and didn't like it, it felt like a trailer. These homes feel like homes, the wood/insulation, other amenities, make it more home-like. I think it is also because trailers have a certain stigma around some but a small home, same size, looks like a cottage, doesn't. The downside is RV's have certain zoning rules built in, they have to meet certain guidelines, Tiny Homes don't. Some people that left their tiny homes said they couldn't even park at an RV park. (not sure why in each case) -

Yes, I would like to hear more humor too. I don't think the whole "movement" is dumb but it does have its craziness and not well thought out ideas, that will give fodder to many comedians. I also noticed on sites like Tiny House Listings, the prices are going up. I see 50, 60, and even over 100.000! If it's Cape Cod, I understand it, but this is anywhere. The whole idea of spending 99,000 on a home on wheels (like the beach tiny house for sale now) is crazy to me. You aren't hooked up to electricity or septic and many times, there is no land, land is the most money usually. I saw a tiny house hunting where they were in Jackson Hole WY and looking a tiny house communities. I realized these weren't really "communities" but cottages people used when visiting ski resorts, etc. and the owners are saying, hey if people will buy them, lets go for it. I guess they said that is the next big thing since they are built already. -
I've seen that a few times, when they were young and not quite "out of the house" age. I understand you don't need a huge room but privacy for anyone is something lofts rarely give. I would definitely have a privacy screen or folding partition. The castle theme one by the way, didn't last long. I read that was on Tiny House listings pretty quickly. : ) The one last night I watched with the couple building behind their house, they had friends sleep over downstairs and they had the loft and of course had to comment how you could hear everyone and the dog barks and everyone is up, etc, etc. I mean if you can't figure that out ahead of time, there is something wrong.lol I liked the last foundation home and thought the home with 5 children might have been able to do more with space than they did but it was their home, the slanted ceilings really stole a lot of space, if it was just a few feet wider.

I remember thinking it was cute when Grace was talking to Phil at their house and saying he had 5 minutes before Frankie started watching Jeopardy and shouting out the wrong answers...and then in a few minutes you hear her doing just that. Made me feel like they had bonded more since season one. They seemed more irritated with each other then, now, more accepting.

Yes, some people have a real eye for that, seeing different outfits or scarves in the same scene, but obviously shot at different times. I like to catch them in reruns for fun. Sometimes I think Jane's makeup looks great, sometimes too much I feel and it looks harsh. I don't know how old the ladies are supposed to be in the show, I know their ages now, but I have a feeling it is lower there. (no one wants to be their real age) If Grace was Jane's age, 78, and her kids seem 20's, early 30's, lets say 30, she had them at 48...don't think so. lol So who knows, maybe in TV time, her kids were teens. Lily is 76, looks great. Yes, Frankie is a common nickname for Frances, Fran or Franny usually for girls but not that unusual. I wish they could film so they would have new episodes earlier, maybe after Xmas. They aren't getting younger and people forget what happened after so long since we can watch so many episodes at once.
-
I thought that too..for Pete's sake, they met and had sex for weeks, months, how long does a skylight take? She mentioned they never went anywhere together for obvious reasons. He doesn't mention children, but did he expect her to leave and just go off somewhere? That said, 15 years ago, at their age, if that was what she said (can't remember) wasn't when kids were young but maybe she still felt it was too much of a move to make in haste. He was awfully sure she would come and didn't seem to reach out.

I saw a crawl space/cellar door on the outside too, so some storage maybe for outside things or plenty of room for a shed. If I had the money, which I don't, a second home there would be heavenly. ; ) I think the "I have to change everything" was played up for people watching but they seemed like a normal couple, I wish more were like that. (but I'm probably not the audience they are targeting) I also saw the real ad for house from 2014 so that one really was for sale, I read many aren't, they just can't find enough sometimes to fill all the episodes. -

Lol, maybe it's better, they don't do anything else, 2 babies is crazy! Another show had a couple building a tiny house with a small closet size room for the baby but it was across the home, the parents were in the loft, I'm sure for a while so would the baby but so unsafe and later maybe crawling about with them asleep upstairs. As a mom I was so distracted by the layout and what I knew could happen, I had to remind myself, it was a show and maybe if they were that crazy, someone will give them advice. In contrast to that show, on a THH with an older couple retiring to Cape Cod, I liked the homes shown. They were shown 3 homes, don't know if they all really were for sale, but they were reasonable for 2 people. 400 sq feet or 500 cottage-like, 2 places to sleep, small yard. That tiny to me is workable, expensive being Cape Cod, but reasonable to live in. The converted school house had a certain charm. -
I'm still wondering if Sam Elliot will be back but I doubt as a regular character in the show. It's easy to say that Phil and Grace would have been a long standing couple if they divorced and married but maybe not. It's very easy when "in lust" to think that but in my 50 plus years I have seen it fall apart many times. They didn't really know each other, they knew they were attracted to each other, but never really had a chance to go out and do things real couples would do and see each other in less than perfect situations. Sam Elliot is sexy and it's easy to see the chemistry but I hope Grace finds out more about herself in other ways next season. If she finds real love, great, but I hope they explore finding ways to be fulfilled and loving yourself too in other areas. Trying to think of another sexy, interesting man to add some interest.... I read reviews that complained the daughters had a lot of time and Grace and Frankie didn't season 1, but it seems less so this season. I think the daughter that has children is fine but they always give working women a hard, irritating persona, maybe that will soften in the future.

Tiny House Hunters - General Discussion

I found an interview where John and Zack said tiny homes are not for everyone, they are not to be decided just living in one for a weekend, you really need to know yourself and your spouse. (if alone it's easier) Not having real personal space is a scary thing, so many times, I retreat to my bedroom to be alone to read or watch TV, a loft wouldn't cut it and I'd still see everyone and hear everyone. That is a biggie he alluded too in why many fail. If you lived in one room prior, fine, but it's stressful to be confined in close quarters daily. Composting with vomiting diarreah, other issues, just makes me cringe, but other people might not care. Safety is another, one girl said her home was stolen, someone took it. Maybe it was rural and they had a trailer but I was shocked. Another person said they are easy to break into, she had it happen twice. Another tiny home dweller brought up fire safety, one large room, one door...if up in a loft, fire happens (they had kitchen fire from wires) where do you go? Another said to ask how much water you will have (if off grid) to fill and heat the tub you insisted on. So many questions, that might seem dumb to some, but become big things later. I do think they are fine for singles or older people if safe and well made but families, I'm skeptical. A victorian cottage ,700 square feet maybe, as a second home somewhere, (in my dreams) would be nice. : ) But I will stay in my old colonial and use the show to help me de-clutter. It does help me see some things really aren't needed. -

Funny...: ) I wish the piece was longer. The "hunters" shows I watch less than THN. At least they have foundation builds, a couple of those coming up. I watch young couples buy trailers for 40-50,000 with everything tiny, composting toilet and then it's for sale a year later. Wonder why? I just watched Tiny Home Big Living for the first time, a cute couple who are having a baby, built a tiny house trailer and had a "fitness theme" climbing wall outside, rope climb etc and one bedroom loft. Where is the kid going? Where will a crib go or high chair? I was dumbfounded. I admit, some foundation homes and some tiny homes, I find cute and workable for certain people but so many, I just shake my head. -
I agree, I have met men that admitted doing what Robert did, they were rich and bought their wives with gifts. (well they let themselves be bought) It was a way to shut them up if they weren't around or did something wrong or to get them in a good mood before hitting them with news they might not like. I understood what Grace was angry about, but I wonder how many men looked confused. ; ) I like how they will show examples of true friendship and morals and feelings, even when subtly. Grace doesn't have to be the Normal Rockwell grandma, but she can be a funny, loving grandma on her own. (just no drinking!)She is seeing that now. I like how Frankie in a non judgemental way told Grace how she felt about Phil. I like how when Grace confronted her daughter about not telling her first about the twin pregnancy, her daughter reminded her about her views on her being a stay at home Mom and how it made her feel. She looked honestly hurt by the memory and these encounters mean more to me and keep me watching more than the Sol/Robert fighting which got over the top in my opinion. You don't have to hit someone over the head to make a point, I think the show is at it's best when the drama is lower.
-
I agree. It's hard and when you are "in lust", they didn't really know each other well yet, it can cloud everything real with ideas of fantasy. I wasn't thinking about her hurt initially but then I remembered her outburst when she found her ex husbands stash of gifts and how much it still hurt her on top of the greater hurt. For some, they would think, "how smart" but for a smart lawyer/husband, it was "how convenient, I don't have to think about it". I look forward to both ladies maturing friendship and their new endeavors.
-
It might be (who knows what writers are thinking) that Grace feels a little funny because she was the "other woman" when she was well, they snuck around on her and now that she's sick, she might feel she is doing it again while she doesn't have the means to say anything. She might also feel guilty because she is taking him away from her in the same way. This isn't "lunch". He must have some help, and she will get worse if true to life, but there is some guilt and I'm glad they have Grace feel some of it. It's complicated by the fact that the marriage wasn't strong then, but for him to stay all this time, maybe more so than they led us to believe.

Frankie is one of those friends I would like but not want to live with. She is a little too much at times, although I laugh. I did like how their friendship grew and changed although 2 different human beings. Frankie is ultra liberal and "hippie-like" but she believes in "sickness and in health" with marriage and her character tells Grace that. She has principles and although over the top at times, is "real". I thought she was unprofessional at the meeting at work but I also thought having her see it, was good and added depth to her character. In some ways she is much more multi-faceted than Grace. I am interested to see how the writers continue the Phil story line, of course much having to do with Sam Elliot's desire to stay on. Their affair might have worked if they divorced or maybe it would have petered out because the attraction was partly in sneaking around and the staleness of marriage at that age. If they have Elaine conveniently die, why did they bring the dementia angle into the picture at all? Phil told her about Grace and later when she started to fail mentally, that was never 100% forgotten which is sad too. How awful Grace must have felt when she saw her, even for a second. I hate the long waits after binge watching, but look forward to an even better third season.
-
I thought he told her that even when she didn't show up, he told his wife everything and Grace was shocked. Then he said she got sick and he didn't leave. I'll have to watch that part again. It's at the end of the Anchor episode.
-
I'm sorry, there is no way Grace isn't an alcoholic. Her kids mentioned her drinking, she drinks all day, early, late. I don't think she could stop if she wanted too. That might be brought up later, but at her age, I doubt it. I find it almost distracting at times and seeing her driving is not a good example either or mixing pills with alcohol. It doesn't matter if people do it, it's not a good thing. (working in hospital taints your thinking at times) it was exciting to take the trip but you knew it would end on a low note. I don't know if Frankie knew the whole story but she did feel bad.I was surprised he was on FB and that wasn't the first introduction instead of the pizza. ; )

When they showed Phil's wife, I was like "her?" I watched a few Criminal Minds episodes but they were too graphic and sick, the one that really turned me off was with a sociopath and Phil's wife, played his wife. She looked exactly the same. Just couldn't shake the eerie feeling. I'm sure if Sam Eliot wants to come back his wife will pass or be so bad he has to have her in a nursing home. The sad part was that he told her about Grace and she lived with that knowledge even through her dementia. Sad all around.

Tiny House Hunters - General Discussion

Maybe it's the "dollhouse" syndrome or just wanting something they can call their own instead of apartment. I have noticed John Weisbarth mentioning in interviews that some couples don't really know what they are getting into but I'm sure they are stubborn and think it will work. Some are immature and don't look into where they can park their house or assume they can do things, some have an idea of living in it and flipping it later while tiny homes are "hot" . And to be fair, it does work for many single and small families or couples if not too small. Not everyone needs a lot of space but the reality part of the show, the "lets to this for ratings" part, might have them pick less than desirable people to show at times. Some couples on all the shows had me just want to turn it off. How that effects the show long term, time will tell. -
I noticed the gap and wondered about it. Another family had a double trailer but it was more connected. Seemed so cold too, I noticed the jackets even with the stove. I'm sure the windows were nice and unbreakable but warm? I would add a railing to the loft also, forgot if they put one up or just a stair railing. I was like Yes! someone finally asked for one with kids! ; ) I heard the dad say the under stair storage which was nice, was all they had. The bed in master bedroom took up the whole room. I was tired but I don't remember the "in floor storage" he did with other homes or outside storage for toys, tools, etc. he has done with other builders and shows. I thought the idea of the home was nice, Zack made a great "rumpus room" but as a mom of 3, I always think ahead, them at 5, 10, 15.....I don't see it working long term. I am looking forward to the next foundation home, it looks very nice in previews and I read an article about it from a local paper.

I see your point, someone did that will Tiny House Hunting. I think that is a good idea.

Is that easy to do?

Well, the commercials seem to be the the new thing at the end, Miracle Gro must be a big sponsor so they work that in the end. I watched the show and listened to the first few minutes on FYI, and no budget or cost was mentioned. I think they are on the parents land and I "assume" they will inherit the house one day or a kid will move in and the parents will keep the tiny home. They sold a home that was large so had money from that. The piano was broken so Zack used it for a novel idea with the bed. The instruments could have been hung, not sure what they will do with them. My question is always closets...why can't they have a small hanging clothes closet? Even Zack with his very tiny home, has a closet for hanging coats and putting boots, etc. Cubby space is great for books, toys. gadgets, clothes that can be folded, but suits, dress shirts, bulky coats, blouses, you can't cram them in that type of space very well. I have no idea (it's not a secret being on TV) how the state/town dealt with taxes and the like. Some tiny homes on wheels will squat on land of friends/family but it's not usually legal and they should move after a while.
