I'm in upstate SC and we've been breathing the smoke from the NC fires for weeks. And they just keep popping up all over the place. It's terrifying. My friend had to go clear out pictures and papers from her mom's house last week (it's still standing, but still threatened). Another friend's parents were evacuated from Lake Lure, but they made it back home and everything is ok for now. But this one seemed to come out of nowhere - it got so big so fast. I feel awful for y'all up there, especially since I know this is a big season for tourism dollars. We really needed more rain that we got today. I'm starting to think it's never going to rain again.

Exactly. And the thing about the EC is that we really have no idea what the actual will of the people is. If you live in a red state, you've got to love the candidate or love the process to bother getting out there to vote. Same goes for Republicans in the blue states. The fact that half the country didn't even bother to show up is telling. (Although I may be being a little optimistic in thinking very many of those people have ever heard of the electoral college, much less understand how it works.)

We never do mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving. No reason, it's just not part of the tradition. We have mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, corn, and peas though, so we've got the carbs covered.

The AFLAC ad with the skier with his leg pointing the wrong direction makes me want to vomit. That is just wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

Dexter had a point. SOME people can put the same shit out there over and over, and it's "signature". His look was awful (don't even get me started on the sheer trend - "we're so much thinner and fabulous-er than the plebes that we don't even have to wear clothes!") but he was damn right in what he said to the judges. Mah-jing's looked like the 70's era couch in my college dorm lounge that was only being held together by duct tape. If Erin's dress had sleeves, I'd swear Blair Warner wore it to prom. I liked Cornelius's a lot. Don't know that I'd call it editorial, but whatever, I liked that it looked like a real person with a real job could wear it and still look unique. Natalia's Supergirl-on-the-walk-of-shame costume - I don't even have words.

Yeah, I'm not down with complaining about AARP. I'm not 50 yet, but I've definitely perused my parents' AARP magazine. And besides, even though the fashion industry is apparently married to the 20-something demographic, it's a lot more likely that someone a little older with some career experience behind her can actually afford what they're offering. I sure as hell couldn't afford anything more expensive than Ross when I was young and skinny.

Dear Crate & Barrel ads with the doorbell that sounds exactly like mine - STOP IT, you are freaking out my pets.

I came home to what smelled like dead animal farts, and it turned out to be cabbage that I had JUST gotten from the farmer's market that had a tiny rotten spot. It was one of the most awful things I have ever smelled in my life. And being the cheapass that I am, I sliced off the bad part and ate the rest - it was fine. :)

Some friends of mine bought those to shine into the trees for a backyard party and it looked really, really cool. I don't think they'd fool anyone into thinking you were Clark Griswold just shining them at your house, though. My cousin puts like 2000 lights on her Christmas tree, wrapping them around each branch from trunk to tip. It looks amazing. I asked her if it was hard to take them off after the holidays and she said "nope, I just pitch them out with the tree and buy new ones on clearance." Yes, it's totally wasteful, but probably 50 bucks well spent.

Really? I'd be afraid everyone would just think I was a raging alcoholic. I know vodka is supposed to be odorless, but still...

My dog does that! I'd be a lot more productive in life if I'd listen to her when she tells me it's time to go to bed, instead of drinking wine and posting on the internet after midnight.

I used to have a cat door so the cats could come into the laundry room and eat. During the winter, I'd leave it closed to the rest of the house to keep the cold out, but the cats could meow at the door and I'd let them in. Anyway, one night, the dog starts going apeshit barking at the laundry room door - I opened it and there were THREE raccoons in there, just going to town on the full bag of cat food that they'd bitten a hole in. I calmly shut the door, let them go out the way they came in, and the cat door has been blocked ever since. They come meow at the front window to come in now. (And I leave food out on the back porch, which I'm sure at least 50% of goes to possums and other assorted critters.)

What is up with that ad for a drug treatment center with all the "I was on heroin, but thanks to Shady Meadows Rehab and Waffles, I'm finally cured!" stories, then one sad guy at the end saying "If only my family had insurance, I could have gotten care." So bizarre.
