This was pretty good, especially Tracey Ellis Ross. Loved Rainbow's comeback to not really being black, and also her response during their argument after she interrupts the ceremony Andre had concocted for his son. The scene went to commercial after she expressed her frustration with his inability to figure his overdramatic self out, and I turned to my sister and said, "She's not wrong." Apparently I took the words right out of my sister's mouth. :-) As a black female who is both into both classic rock and sci-fi, I am right there with you. I've heard it from black people as well as white.

Wait, I turned on my tv at 8:17 and saw this part. And they still had it play into the reshot ending, with him sitting outside his door commenting on the rain instead being pushed into it.

It is depressing. I wish people could have as much fun as I'm having with the Moffat era. I like Capaldi -- I think he's fantastic in this role. I like his Doctor for the most part, harumphing and all. I really enjoy that he is different from his predecessors. My problem is that the writing isn't different, and I don't feel like the story-telling is in sync with the Doctor we're seeing now, vs. the Doctor we were seeing previously. In some cases the result is that elements that didn't register on my radar before are glaring distractions now. This Doctor is a different man than the previous regeneration, and has a different relationship with the people around him, so I expect new and different stories to be told -- but what I'm getting is the same storytelling and storylines underneath what should be a radical shift. It doesn't support it, at least not nearly as well as I would like. I thought the show would sort of re-invent itself with the regeneration -- that's what I was led to believe would happen. Instead, I feel like I got a new car frame and interior design on my car, but I'm still running the same tires and engine. Not quite the overhaul I was expecting.

And you've just summed up a major problem I've had with pretty much every recent season. I like most of the main relationships pn the show -- but alot of what I like is what I've inferred from watching the little bits of real relationship activity we get over and over again. There is so little true onscreen relationship development to allow people to buy into the way these characters treat each other -- and Clara and Danny are another example. The little bits I saw in this episode I liked, but that's because I'm making up most of their story between "Listen" and this episode in my head. I shouldn't have to do that for every relationship in which I'm actually interested on the show.

One thing I noticed here, after watching my S1 DVDs, is that Oliver's "the mission comes first" statement is a callback. Back in S1 when Oliver intentionally got caugt on camera carrying his Hood gear and was put on house arrest, Diggle tries to explain to him how worried his family is about losing him again. Oliver's response? "The mission comes first."

"Why are you in charge?" Because that's exactly what I've been asking for! Perfectly acceptable as a one off, I don't mind the holes I'll likely discover on rewatch, don't even mind the simplistic ending. I enjoyed this one all the way through. Yay!

THIS. Eleven is my Doctor. I'm not a Moffat-hater. I'm not a Clara-hater. I do however, dislike the trend that has the show going from "The Doctor saves the day with the teamwork and support of his trusty companion(s)" to "The Doctor is physically/mentally/emotionally incapacitated or otherwise incapable of saving the day (that is probably in peril due to his own faulty actions), so 'this is a job for the companion(s)'" in ways that are increasingly less and less subtle.

From the article: This just about killed my interest in the show. Which is a shame, since this is my first series to watch live. I mainlined all of NuWho so I would be ready for this series, and I was really excited to see Peter Capaldi be The Doctor. I don't tune into to this show for Clara, and as much as loved various previous companions, they aren't the reason the show is called Doctor Who.Let me add: the concept of companion as main character is not necessarily problematic -- at least, it hasn't been as much of an issue when the focus was on the companion experiencing the Doctor's life, traveling with him in the TARDIS, etc. But more and more the companions are not living life with the Doctor -- they're choosing an everyday life and holding the Doctor at arm's length for just occasional trips instead of extended traveling. So it's become more of, rather than human aspiring to something fantastic beyond our realm, the alien who wishes he could be like us, or at the very least the alien with whom we're not really as enamored as we claim, because we're too busy being our own lives. It was cute at first, but it's worn so thin on me now that in the back of my mind I wonder, what's the point?

The difference might be that the Arrow cast doesn't actively try to sabotage each other's takes the way the SPN cast does. :-)

I'll take what I can get, though. If she leaves on good terms, if they only use her for flashbacks, if they drop her to recurring status -- less FF time is less. I'm willing to at least see where they go this upcoming season -- if they somehow manage to transform Laurel into a workable character (even accounting for sometimes questionable acting choice's on KC's part), I'll be impressed. I mean, Roy Harper was a workable character for me even despite CH's acting choices (or lack thereof) in S1, so if the writing can be fixed, I can at least somewhat look past the acting. But I don't see how at the moment that Laurel can become tenable without a reduction in screentime. Putting her in BC or L/O roles are not options for me.
