  1. not really a comparison but more of an theory.. When I watched Morse, it bothered me that he would insult Lewis by saying something that Lewis "should have known". But now, I'm beginning to think that Morse isn't insulting Lewis. That it was Morse recalling something from his past and is thinking aloud or frustrated that Lewis (or he himself) hadn't remembered it earlier. Of course, as the series progresses this theory might be blown to bits. But still it's giving me a bit more insight into Inspector Morse.

Few things from the old thread in Masterpiece... 1. I don't understand how Captain Fake was able to go unrecognized by anyone (Frida's mom, his family, his regiment, the real Captain Batten's friends/family) for two decades. Okay, there is a certain amount of suspension of reality, but Captain Fake was a prominent member of Oxford society and Mrs. Captain Fake was a running for political office. 2. At least this gives me more insight to the Morse-Lewis relationship. Many times Morse says something to Lewis as though Lewis is a dummy or uneducated. I'm getting the impression now that Morse isn't doing that to belittle or tease Lewis but more like Morse is recalling it from his past and is frustrated that Lewis didn't remember it or isn't familiar with it. 3. This explains the limp. 4. Morse is hitting the bottle. I didn't think he started that early in his career. 5. It's beginning to explain why Strange became his superior.
  3. As a blues fan, I can't bring myself to hate anyone with the handle "BigMamaThornton". I find Gillian's story more interesting too. I'm not liking the other side of the family very much.
  4. We're getting decent 2nd hour repeats. Monday night it was the Late Bloomer case. Father of 19 or 20 year old Late Bloomer sued LB's friends for damaging the car Dad gave to LB. And last night one of the cases was the sister suing her other sister for putting the electric bill in her name after their mother had it turned off to force the defendant sister out of the house.

I thought he copied what was on the notepad onto his notepad? With this episode, it seems like Morse was indulging in a private joke when he said that to Lewis. And of course, Lewis didn't get it. It gives me a new insight to the Morse-Lewis relationship though. Because I'm getting the feeling when Morse says things like that to Lewis it was more of a private joke (to Morse) or out of frustration that they went through this before so Lewis should know it already than any criticism of Lewis' geordie background. Of course, Lewis is clueless because he wasn't around when Morse had gone through it before. Dr. Bonnet would be one of those characters that need a Lewis or Hathaway around to give a mental eye-roll the audience could see.
  6. Gillian does have poor impulse control (when it comes to men):. But when Alan did that, it was like the kettle calling the pot black. Not to mention that per Gillian, they only spoke twice during the time he was at Celia's recuperating. And I agree with the parallel lives thing. The difference between Gillian and Caroline is that Gillian is more direct and Caroline is more closed. RE: Are we supposed to like Celia and Alan? I wasn't digging Celia too much after Caroline came out and her(Celia) reaction to Alan's reaction of her (Celia). I'm digging her less when she and Caroline were appalled that Gillian would be so morally bankrupt that she's drunk and jumping into bed with John. I don't recall Alan or Gillian doing anything remotely similar when Caroline came out. And I'm digging her even less that she tattled to Alan. Also, I noticed that when Alan and Celia were talking to Gillian about where they would live after they married, Alan says something like they'll live in Halifax, but Celia says they haven't decided.
  7. Here's another thing that irked me. When Celia lashed out at Caroline for being gay, Allan was incredibly disappointed with her and broke up with her for her treatment of Caroline. Yet, Allan tells Gillian and Celia that Gillian is a big disappointment, got pregnant at 15 and broke her mother's heart. He basically called his daughter a big loser to her face. But somehow that's okay?

lol, I read that really fast and thought you wrote "She had a gun hidden in her hair." I knew that bouffant 'do could be tall and scary but....yikes! But that explains, Morse's limp. And all these cases happening on roof tops and people committing suicide by falling off roof tops explains why Morse wasn't fond of heights (and sent Lewis to deal with that sort of thing). and Morse is hitting the bottle too. :-( As I wrote above, if Lewis wakes up in 1966 or 1967 a la Life On Mars, he would probably break all of the "don't change the future" rules of Sci-Fi and tell Endeavour what's in store for him.

That makes sense. But it doesn't make sense that Captain Fake wasn't keeping tabs on Frida or Elspeth to avoid bumping into them. Or that he managed to avoid being found out, considering he lead a rather high profile life.
  11. John is an asshole and a stalker. But I don't like Caroline using Kate either. Having Kate move in because she wants Kate to move in is different than moving Kate in so John gets the message (and potentially moves out.) I feel sorry for their sons.

I'm not a hard-core opera fan, but I know enough opera to recognize the brindisi from La Traviata during the beauty queen/election results montage. I didn't understand it being used in the montage, other than the really superficial "hey, let's celebrate!" Especially since his wife was running for political office and he was a "respected" man in Oxford. Unless his entire regiment was wiped out, you'd think someone would notice that's not the real Captain Batten. Also, didn't Thursday or Morse say that Frida's mother was still alive? (I guess she never picks up a newspaper......)

I don't understand why no one realized the fake Captain was a fake, especially his secret society. Don't they have regimental reunions? Anyhow, I think the whole "secret society" thing is a plot device to explain why Strange rose in the ranks to become Morse's boss. But if Morse got on the Secret Society's bad side, why did Strange stay loyal to Morse (especially in The Remorseful Day, the last Inspector Morse book/episode)? Needs more 'splaining........ I got that Diana Day was supposed to be like Diana Dors (the UK's version of Marilyn Monroe....who was also married to Richard Dawson AKA Newkirk on Hogan's Heroes and host of Family Feud), but who was the female politician? Can't be Maggie Thatcher (could it?)
  14. I saw the repeat of the stolen shotgun. Pawn broker sues defendant for $800 + because defendant pawned a stolen shotgun which he got as a gift (or bought it) from a guy who goes by 2 names.
  15. Used to post on TWoP's thread as Milz (not very original with my handles). I started watching SB in elementary school because that was when it started, lol. It's still my favorite soap (Days comes close, but not very close). RE: Augusta wanting to keep Joe out of town. I thought it was because Augusta thought Warren was involved in Channing's death. So keeping Joe out of town would keep any suspicion falling onto Warren. Brick becomes animportant character and, yeah, I thought they kind of dropped the ball on his storyline too.
  16. I like Yu. New episode this week--beef with potatoes.
  17. The 8 year olds case was weird. Dad definitely wanted moola-moola-moola x 1000. The side eye gave me flashbacks to high school. There was a girl who wore her hair parted at the side but her bangs covered one eye. Sometimes she used to sit at lunch with her visible eye closed and you just knew she was looking at you with the hair covered eye. Creepy.
  18. My PBS station showed Anne Reid in Ladies of Letters. Her character, Vera, is loopy. So when Celia has a loopy lapse, I just chalk it up to Anne Reid playing Celia like Vera. but I'll keep an eye out for this.
  19. But the pained look on her face when she learned her mother never gave Celia's note to Allan was hard to watch.
  20. Thanks for that recap. I figured Caroline insulted Gillian, but the impression I got the fight was one of these hair-pulling smack down type things (I know, I watch too much Judge Judy) The PBS station here has a digital channel that shows UK programs only and both series were aired on it. They repeat the episodes at odd hours, so I've only been able to watch them once. What I find hard to watch is the amount (the little amount) of lighting in the farmhouse scenes. Everything is in shadows (yeah, probably done for theatrical effect) but when you can hardly see who's in the room with the other actors, it's tough. (Or maybe I need to adjust the tv?)
  21. As a DC Metro PBS viewer I'm really tired of WETA's Pledge MONTHS. They'll probably put this on WETA UK some time in the future. . Anyhow, I'm off to watch this on the PBS site.
  22. We get 2 episodes on Saturday. Hair Gel Brain was the first episode. Old man and the "mink" coat were the second.
