This would mean that we would never get contestants like Burt, Stanley, or even Christian Siriano. All three of them had experience working at design houses before they appeared on the show. Christian had worked for Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood before he appeared on Project Runway. I'm sure that contestants who have that experience would look at a prize that includes an internship as a huge disappointment. The show already has problems casting talented contestants. An internship prize means that truly talented and experienced contestants would stay far away from Project Runway. With respect, I don't necessarily agree with you here. Yes, certainly some designers with some professional experience--either with an established design house or even with their own company--wouldn't apply to PR for any number of reason; not being able to leave their shop, couldn't afford the loss of $ for however long, not seeing an advantage, perhaps seeing it as a step backwards or whatever and that's valid. But we also know not everyone has felt that way. Several contestants have had their own companies (my horrid memory doesn't bring their names to the front, but they exist--Wendy Pepper had her own shop, Chloe from S2 and others). Christian is an exceptional talent with the personality to attract customers and a willingness to expand his designs to plus size, shoes and any number of things in addition to red carpet--much to his credit. While I obviously don't know the man I don't know if he'd have turned down a job at, say YSL, were it offered, especially before he signed the contracts he has now. He seemed to have no problem being on PR, gave it his all and won the jackpot. The winner of S1--Jay somebody--was also hugely talented and couldn't deal with his win; where is he now? I was just suggesting that if he'd had a mentor he might--maybe--have found his footing. As mentioned above, fashion--or any of the arts when you come down to it--is a difficult and often cut-throat business. Sadly, basic talent can be had for cheap, a lot of people have some degree of talent. Exceptional ability is rare and if it's combined with the needed personality (not many people want to work with an obnoxious bastard or bitch for long)--there aren't too many other options out there. Add to that the reality of needing business savvy or someone to handle that for you, PR and all the rest in addition to seed money and I get why PR has an almost endless pool of applicants. Okay, not all of them are the bee's knees, but they're out there. Just MHO but it seems to me that the lack of big talents has more to do with the direction the show has taken--1 day challenges, not much $ , just a week or two for final collections, boring BS workroom drama trumping the actual design ideas...the cynicism of milking the show as long as they can is killing it.

S11.E21: Reunion Part 3
Beden replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
No idea who will be signed to return next season but if someone pulled the crap on me that Vicki has pulled on the cast I wouldn't want to be in the same state with her, let alone on the same set...repeated lying, shrieking at anyone who dared call her out about her endless lies, clearly going along and abetting lies about cancer (lying about cancer!!!--who the fuck {aside from Brooks} does that???), aligning herself with a scam/fake cancer charity to sell insurance, throwing supposed close (and genuine) friends under the bus in her defense of her endless lies, denying her admission on camera about her lying, insisting that it's all water under the bridge and everyone is being meanmeanmean to her and should get over themselves and, besides, she never ever lied and will never ever see Brooks again--unless he walks in her door after repeated calls to him. I realize that these women are a cast in a crap reality show which has gotten stale but the woman is vile, beyond the pale. For Bravo to continue her lifestyle is abhorrent. -
S11.E21: Reunion Part 3

I agree but trace this back to the cult of youth, the concept of denying natural aging, the necessity of Botox, hair dye and all that goes along with it. Obviously no one wants to end up looking like the Crypt Keeper but the reality is that, as you get older, things change--the texture of your skin, you tend to go gray, clothing which fit when you were 25 either doesn't still fit or doesn't look as good as it once did. Lynn Curtin was a prime example of this; she flatly and often refused to reveal her real age (50-something, I'd guess), prided herself on sharing clothing with her high school aged daughters, demanded facelifts and such when they were being foreclosed on for non-payment of rent and so on. Vicki's insecurity insists that having her many times reconstructed almost 60 year old boobs on constant display is another example; seriously, does anyone really want to see them walking down the street or at a restaurant? To me it just seems desperate and sad. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look your best but a nod to reality isn't a bad thing. -
S11.E21: Reunion Part 3

No, it happens. My best friend for 50+ years father was a salesman who had a second secret family unknown to his first family (wife+ 4 daughters). #2 were up in Canada, part of his territory. He finally decided to ditch #1 for #2, after about 2 years he rethought his decision and wanted #1 to take him back and he promised, cross his heart and hope to die that he'd never ever do it again. #1 told him to go to hell. Yes, it happens. I'll grant wife #1 had suspicions but he was a slick charmer and she was blindsided. -

Which is why I don't understand why Andy and the rest didn't simply pull up clips from last year's reunion when Vicki admitted that she lied (as well as the many obvious examples when she spewed complete BS). I would have loved to see her spin that.... -
Just a thought...if, instead (or maybe in addition to) the huge prize package a real one or two year internship or assistant designer job with a legit designer was offered--maybe with Lauren, or DVF or some such was offered--a real foot in the door, the winners might have more of a chance to actually make a name for themselves. As it is they're given a bunch of stuff and a grubstake to get started but seem to be on their own to sink or swim. It also may attract higher qualified contestants. Maybe.

S11.E20: Reunion Part 2
Beden replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
My brother got both his bachelors and masters from USC. It was and remains one of the two or three top schools in the country for his field and, not being 1%ers, it was paid for by scholarship, loans and cash. SC gets a bad rep from morons like Kelly who wouldn't know a top school unless she was bonking the football team after crashing a weekend party. Spare me ignorant idiots...and yes, their cheerleaders tend to be knockouts. -
She was going to a wedding as a bridesmaid in 1977. I know--that was the dress I had to wear to a friend's wedding that year. Okay, it wasn't metallic (Gunne Sax/prairie look was in that year) but aside from that...yeah. I recognized it immediately and I'm still wondering who she's blackmailed to get this far. That flounce was the bee's knees back when I was in high school. In the 1970's. I guess she decided to go retro. Or something.

S11.E20: Reunion Part 2
Beden replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
I doubt that this is Vicki's last season, though her 15 minutes passed several years ago. I also wonder what she'll do, aside from shilling insurance, should she be shown the door; she seems to have invested so much of her persona and self esteem--such as it is--in being the OG that if she loses that, I wonder what she'll have left (aside from her job and family). That's a big ole love tank which is going to be seriously wanting some attention and won't be pretty. -

It's completely possible that a clause banning discussing their paychecks is part of their contracts. I've worked for companies where talking about what you make was a 'you're fired' offense. It was considered bad for morale to know you were making less than the person next to you or whatever. It's also no one's business--not that I wouldn't love to know the pay scale for these ladies (a word I use lightly). -
True but I strongly suspect that we're also seeing the effects of sleep depreciation. It's difficult to be creative and accurate in your construction if you haven't had a full night's sleep in 2 weeks. Yes and yes. This has been an ongoing problem with PR for years; the worst critique Nina can give is to call something 'mumsy'...clearly meaning no right thinking 20 year old would be caught dead. Yes, we Mums often do have $ to spend on top of knowing --after decades--what we like and what looks good on us, what makes us feel good when we wear it. I also, FWIW, have a degree in fine art (design) and have made my living for decades as a designer--still do, in fact. I had a polite conversation with a store manager in a Lord and Taylor, asking why they weren't still carrying quality/decent weight cashmere in the adult women's areas. He hemmed and hawed, said corporate didn't think it sold. Okay, says I, I'll buy it somewhere else and you've lost a sale. He nodded and clearly had heard this before. Screw your 'Mumsy' or whatever tacky, insulting ageist comments and don't pocket my money, which I'll take elsewhere. While PR reinforces the idea that an interest in fashion ends with your 30th birthday.

With respect, I'm disagreeing here. I simply thought of it as a real person challenge; a non- model displayed series of garments worn by over 30's (or 50's) who have very real requirements (school, work, travel, etc) and also had opinions and input about what they'd end up with. Some succeeded, some, not so much. All I could think when I saw Erin's mess was 'okay, this coat again in a non-gray over a dress which could only be worn at an afternoon tea party with the DAR...were the white gloves included? This girl needs to leave now; she's a one-trick and boring. And a bit snotty as well. She's not my cuppa...

S11.E19: Reunion Part 1

Perhaps but, as my grandfather used to say; "If a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his ass on the ground"...as well as "All you can expect from a pig is a grunt". Just saying. -
S11.E19: Reunion Part 1
Beden replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
I agree Zoeysmom...but then why would we believe that she was telling the truth? Vicki, her BFF wouldn't know the truth if it bit her on the ass and I suspect Kelly's 'truth' is a fluid thing. It is if you think polarizing means 'calm, cool and collected'. You know, like Grace Kelly (not a knock to Grace, who was often referred to as an ice queen). -
Vicki Gunvalson: Her Love Tank Runneth Over
Beden replied to Lisin's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
As I recall her husband (as well as his father?) was a player on the A's but was seriously injured and suffered brain damage after being hit in the head by a baseball. I believe he was basically given a job (ie, a paycheck) for life. My ex was mentally ill; it's not an easy thing to live with and raising kids with that, well, it's not like living with the Walton's. Jeana had her faults but she had a lot on her plate and it wasn't all good. Overall, I give her a lot of credit.- 2.7k replies

I agree that most of the time these are, indeed, separate issues and often an unfortunate part of doing business or simply working with other people but in this case part of the challenge was to work as a team, cooperate and come up with a cohesive design together. On that level they failed. The seeming fact that they didn't play nice was secondary, if annoying and unprofessional.
-
Thank you. As soon as she said she wanted to make an oversized coat/jacket 'Again???' went through my mind. Yup, a one trip horse, IMO, who has an inflated opinion of her abilities. Maybe she figures that since the judges all creamed over that yellow thing she made early in the season she should stay with a winning idea or some such. And yes, her ego is a problem for her--and anyone who happens to be working with her. This was a team challenge and, on that level (and her coat with the really stupid pockets as embellishments) she failed. Fashion, especially if you're not a major, starving or self-supporting designer--is often a collaboration and that's just reality. I wouldn't want to work with this bitch; I suspect she'd make anyone with her feel like an orphan child or idiot.

S11.E18: Vicious Lies And Broken Ties
Beden replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
With respect, saying that she's the most heinous HW across all franchises doesn't, to me, begin to sum her up. She's a vile woman who hooked up with someone even slimier than she is (while she was married, if rumors are to be believed), chose him over family and friends, alienated basically everyone she's in contact with or works with and then compounded her actions by attempting to make money through a fake charity shilling fake 'miracle cure' smoothies, or whatever the fuck they were before being shut down. And her current priority seems to be retaining her contract for big bucks with Bravo while generating sympathy for being bullied and ganged up on by the mean meanies who just don't understand. The problem with that logic is that, in fact, her co-workers--and viewers--do understand. We understand pretty damn well. Sorry for the rant but she, and people like her, just burn my balls. -
S11.E18: Vicious Lies And Broken Ties
Beden replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
This and thank you. The lie, used for TV time and ratings also cheapens what genuine cancer victims and their families endure, reducing their very real agony (both physical and emotional) to just another shill and scam; a cheap attempt for attention. Then to further compound the vileness of the lie, it was first (and still) denied and then simply shrugged off as no big deal. For anyone--for the millions of people--who have gone through the nightmare of treatments, pain, hair loss, lives lost, families torn apart both emotionally and financially, death and the void of missing friends and family the level of cynicism is beyond insult. And saying that you're sorry then reacting as though that were enough and suggesting that you're being ganged up on and deserve sympathy...no. Just not, not even close. -
S11.E18: Vicious Lies And Broken Ties
Beden replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Real Housewives Of Orange County
Vicki reminds me of a cousin of mine who called me not long ago and informed me that my son is a heroin addict (!). They happen to both live in the same city, around 2,000 miles from me and so she knows. Over the course of several phone calls over a few days she changed her story every time; oh no, she never said he's an addict (BS), but his friends!!! (whom she's never met). Oh no, it's not his friends who are fine but I just don't understand how horrible and dangerous his work is and he's in the (legal) drug industry and it's so awful and it's all a cash business and I just don't understand and she's just soooo worried about him. Her story changeswi th her mood and whichever way the wind's blowing. Okay, my son is a highly trained, with a degree in his field, in demand glass worker of a number of years standing and works full time in his field. He does work--sorta in the drug industry--making custom scientific pieces for completely legal research in the medical/pharma/educational/oil industries. It's a highly technical job, requiring intense concentration with virtually no margin for error; hardly the sort of job an addict could maintain for years on end. And yes, he also has made high end bongs--all completely legal. His paychecks, taxes with-held, in this 'all cash' business are auto-deposited in his completely legal bank account. Oh, and he's vehemently against hard drugs. Fuck you Cuz, Vicki's soul mate. Just sayin'--she's not unique. -
Well yes, but the UK is also a country where toast is served stone cold, making it impossible to smear the butter and have it melt (as God intended)...and apologies to my Brit friends but, seriously...they know I'm right about this. They are also appalled that I happen to prefer my tea black, eliminating the milk quandary. And I'm suspicious about the BF also. He may not be a spy or whatever, but he's a jerk.
-
I was surprised when Stevie and the BF were on a bus going wherever and no security in sight (maybe they were in a different row?). The stalking thing is still ongoing and supposedly security has been beefed up. Struck me as a hole in the plot or continuity.
-
Thank you, I was just about to make the same observation. They get up, go to the studio, are told to get a flight to Florida, have to get clothes, schelp to some NY airport, catch the flight, do the park (or some part of it) schlep to another airport, fly back then hit Mood. All while already being sleep deprived. And then have to make whatever in yet another one day challenge. Seriously? Talk about loading the dice. I get that this isn't really a design competition any more but just another BS quasi-reality show, but...c'mon.
-
Sadly, I agree. I was intrigued by the first couple of episodes and, I admit, missed last night due to sheer exhaustion and an early bed time for me but yes--the cliches are getting to me. I have real hope that this will get better but I almost expect the various crowd scenes, faux news reports and sundry 'enemies' of Kirkland to start chanting 'Lock him up, lock him up". Perhaps that's part of my problem with this show; the Capitol bombing aside, it seems too much like what we're living through with the endless backstabbing, nastiness and such on our TV's and every news outlet for the last year. And no--I'm not trying to start a discussion about our current election or candidates. I guess I just want a break.

Oh Dennie...thank you! I was going into withdrawal. Loving all your maybe insider info/rumors. 'Don't even care if any of it's true; so little regarding the Browns is.
