  1. If you're blonde, chances of any of the above happening to you are doubled.
  2. I feel like I've always known Enigma but if I didn't know it before, I learned it from Robert Harris's novel Enigma or the movie made from it. I guess New Bridge because even though the only Paris bridge whose name I know is Alexandre III, every city in Europe seems to have a New Bridge, an Old Bridge, an Old New Bridge, a New Old Bridge, etc.
  3. @Laura Holt, it would depend on the state in which the person was convicted. It could be that all 50 had the death penalty at the time although they don't all have it now.
  4. When Las Ramblas came up, I informed the cat that I'd been there. As I always do when some place I've been shows up on TV. I'm sure she's thinking "Yes, I know, you left me alone with just a cat sitter to come in and feed me and play with me and tell me how wonderful I am everyday...when's your next trip?"
  5. Must be 6--I can't open the link.
  6. If you like fireworks this is a great time to live on the border. Sometimes towns across from each other will have joint celebrations.
  7. Happy Canada Day to all in the Great White North!
  8. God damn it. I really liked Alan Arkin. He was delicious in the Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming and I will never forgive him for making Sigmund Freud kind of hot in The 7% Solution. He and Peter Falk were hilarious in the original The In-Laws but aspects of it probably don't hold up well. Jinx, @Domestic Assassin!
  9. One of the things I like about Only Connect is that the host introduces the team members with one odd or funny note about each. When it started, the team captains introduced the contestants and it was awful.
  10. "Well, obviously it's not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products."
  11. At the moment I only have YouTube Premium to avoid ads and Prime, through which I have Acorn and Britbox steadily and other services like MhZ and Paramount+ off and on. I canceled Netflix a couple of weeks ago and Hulu a few months ago. I'll re-up when enough things I want to watch run on either.
  12. I saw Paxton Whitehead on stage as Sherlock Holmes in the premier of Crucifer of Blood and was always delighted when he popped up in something I was watching.
  13. Pop a dramamine and xanax, watch a movie, fall asleep. I've only been on long flights in the last few years. Reading in a moving vehicle of any kind makes me motion sick and just being on a plane causes enough of that.
  14. Costner is just so bland.
  15. I thought climate change came into use because some people can't distinguish between weather (it's snowing where I live) and climate (Earth's hottest [insert month of choice] on record, glaciers continue to melt at frightening speed, etc.).
  16. This reminds me of a scene from the Drew Carey show where the guys are all pretending to be Kate's relatives and someone asks Oswald why he's the only one with an accent. "I was born on vacation."
  17. Does anyone have a recommendation for noise canceling headphones? Due to asshole neighbors, I really need headphones that cancel other peoples' bass noise. I'll still be able to feel it, but it would be great not to actually have my head throbbing. Aside from being free from bass, comfort when worn with glasses, bluetooth connectivity, and a microphone would be swell. I have read so many reviews but no one gives priority to eliminating bass noise and no one addresses the problem of comfortable wear with glasses.
  18. I've been feeling a little down so I looked up one of my favorite videos:
  19. It's just as bad, if not worse, in academic libraries.
  20. Even though I missed last night's show, I will don my Man from UNCLE T-shirt and opine on the glory that was Illya Kuryakin and the lesser glory that was Napoleon Solo, a man who would've provided full-time employment for an entire HR department all on his own. I was barely out of the womb when the show first aired and it was one of my first TV loves. I have the full DVD set in the silver brief case. The TV Movie reunion was terrible. Painfully bad. The A Team episode that David McCallum guested on--Robert Vaughan was a regular character at the time--was better and that's a thing I never thought I'd say about that show. The recent (well, more recent...) movie with Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer...where to begin...on the one hand, I really appreciated that they gave Napoleon a backstory even if it contradicted the show, and gave him something to do. Because you know going in everyone loved Illya best and it would've been easy to sideline Napoleon. On the other hand, the casting of Armie Hammer was problematic even before the Hammer horror became known because Illya cannot be huge. His feistiness was perfect because he was wasn't built like a tank. Also, David McCallum was himself perfect in that role and it would take someone with significantly more wit and style than Hammer to even come close. I'm on the fence about Hugh Grant as Mr. Waverly.
  21. Bees have finally found the salvia and catmint in my garden. I am ridiculously pleased.
  22. Watching Olympics coverage in the 1990s you wouldn't have known other countries even existed unless they competed against an American. Same with coverage of military actions--according to American news only the US was involved. I was so glad we were close enough to the border to get CBC.
  23. Yeah, that was weird.
  24. Anecdotal evidence: my BIL the cop said the same re: Barney Miller.
