  1. All the talk of Taco Bell reminded me of this story from 2011. (I stopped eating from the bell, so I don't know if they've improved). http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/25/taco-bell-meat_n_813864.html Also I think the king of commercials with with inappropriate songs might be this one from Dr Pepper:
  2. Millennium, your post reminded me of an article about the problem with DC. I've attached the link below, but basically the problem is that: http://comicsalliance.com/dc-comics-marvel-golden-age-silver-age-comics-history/
  3. I want to start off by saying that I am not a fan of Zack Snyder, and will celebrate on the day that he and WB part ways. That being said the disappointing box office for BvS is not his fault. He was hired to make a Zack Snyder Batman/Superman movie, and he gave the executives at Warner Brothers a Zack Snyder Superman/Batman movie. And Zack Snyder fans loved that movie. The problem is that he is an extremely divisive director, and too many people dislike his movies for something with the budget of BvS do well. (When looking at the net profit). A Zack Snyer movie with a smaller budget would do very well. In my opinion the WB executives have no faith in any DC character other than Batman, and think that the Dark Knight did well, because it was Batman being dark and gritty. (It did well because it was a good movie featuring a popular character). My plan would be to fire Snyder and Goyer before they do any more damage, then clean house at the executive level. Replace the current executives with people that will hire good screen writers and directors to make movies that fit the character. (For example Superman movies should be hopeful and idealistic).
  4. One of my first comics was during the 'Demon Bear' story line in New Mutants. I'm not certain when Magik joined, but she was already a member at that point, and it was pretty early in the run. So, I have no problem with her being in the movie. In fact, I would say they have all of the 'essential' characters from New Mutants. (Although it would be nice if they had Karma in the movie too). (And check out the Demon Bear arc of NM. Bill Sienkiewicz's art is what got me into comics).
  5. My big problem is that nothing Lori-Ann said justifies leaving her other daughter with a man that probably needs help making a bowl of cereal. Although it does make sense that Kymmi wasn't mentioned. Kimmy was more concerned with confronting her mother about the way that she was treated then she was with a sister she's met twice in her life. And Lori-Ann is an inherently self-centered woman.
  6. I've been enjoying this season (up to episode seven so far), but I lost it with the Mentos bit. That might be the highlight of the season for me.
  7. Here's a DC Movie timeline. (I only included movies that featured possible JL members. No Constantine or Jonah Hex). 2004: Catwoman 2005: Batman Begins 2006: Superman Returns 2008: The Dark Knight 2011: Green Lantern 2012: The Dark Knight Rises So out of six movies three did well, and three... did not. Some people might look at this list and determine that people like good movies. But Hollywood always learns the wrong lesson. Obviously the Batman movies did well because they were "Dark" and "Gritty". Watchmen came out in 2009, and did pretty well for an R rated movie. The WB executives probably blamed the drop in attendance on the rating, and thought Snyder was the man to make a successful (PG-13) movie in the 'correct' tone.
  8. I'm cautiously optimistic about Suicide Squad. The property fits the tone that WB wants. Add a little gallows humor, and it will be a fun movie. As for Batman vs Superman, I hope it does poorly enough that WB makes some changes. I've always preferred Marvel to DC, but I still like many of the DC characters. (Robinson's Starman is my all time favorite comic). I WANT to see those characters in good movies. That won't happen as long as WB insists on every property having the same tone, regardless if its the correct tone for that property. It also won't happen as long as Snyder and Goyer are involved in their movies.
  9. I don't remember Clarence Boddicker going by that nickname. On a related note. I've often wondered if his role in Robocop is why I've found Kurtwood Smith intimidating in other roles. (On some level I spent the first season of That 70's Show waiting for him to ask Bob if he could fly). Are there any non Robocop viewers here? If so, do you find Vernon intimidating?
  10. I loved this episode, but...how can they not tell us what's in the suitcase?
  11. It's just a rumor, but this here's some possible good news for fans of the EU. Personally, I don't mind that the EU is non-canon now. (As long as Disney does cherry pick from it). We tend to remember the good parts, but there was a lot of hack writing in the EU.
  12. I was (briefly) interested in becoming an architect back in HS. My class had two girls and roughly twenty boys. One day the teacher asked the girls about this, and was told that the guidance counselors had attempted to talk them out of taking the class. (Looking back, I hope he had a discussion about this with the counselors). I have to wonder if something similar happens at the HS or college level when women are interested in film school.
  13. Regarding the Marvel vs. Lucasfilm discussion. I think Disney has had a similar hands off approach to both companies. The current management at Disney seems to be willing to do this as long as they get the right results ($$$). Based on stuff I've read about Marvel, the issues there were with there own executives. Specifically Ike Perlmutter. That's no longer an issue. http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/09/marvel-studios-ike-perlmutter-kevin-feige Which shows what type of issues will get Disney to step in. Unfortunately Ike was involved with the new cap movie, so the earliest we could see a difference would be after that one. Back on topic. Does any one know if Disney can release the original versions of the first trilogy? I could see Lucas as the type of control freak that would have something in the contract that this wouldn't be allowed.
  14. I can't help but think of the dalek episodes. It was mentioned multiple times that daleks had nanites in them that made it hard to kill them. And Clara was exposed to these nanites. Per every science fiction story I've ever seen those nanites are still inside her. So, I have my doubts about how permanent her death is.
  15. This is what I'm hoping for, and why I'm reserving judgement on the astronaut boyfriend. I would love it if Fitz and Simmons rescue Will. Then Will and Simmons realize that they don't work as a couple within three episodes.
  16. Since Fitz and Simmons are a pair of geniuses working for SHIELD we should probably be surprised that the super battery was the only alteration made to the phone. I mean Q would have added a laser to it.
  17. I don't think there are many people who expect an FF movie to stick too close to any one story line. But they do expect the characters to be the same as they are in the source material. and from what I've read in reviews that isn't the case here. isn't just deviating from the source material, it's ignoring it entirely. Also I have to wonder if anyone told the suits at Fox that Ultimate Fantastic Four was canceled due to bad sales before they decided to use it for their movie.
  18. I haven't read it yet either, but I guess my concern is that people will view these characters as the same people, when really it's the original versions of the characters. It's quite possible that Lee made changes to Scout, Atticus, and the others during the writing of To Kill a Mockingbird. I guess that's what I meant about how to view Watchman. Reading it as a continuation of the story in Mockingbird is flawed, but reading it as the first draft of the story that became To Kill a Mockingbird can lead to some interesting conversations. For instance is the Atticus Finch of Mockingbird a racist that's just doing his job, a hero, or something inbetween? Is he the same character as the Atticus Finch in Watchman, or did Harper Lee make changes to his character? I probably will read Watchman in the near future, then reread Mockingbird to see what changed, and what stayed the same. (Although I'll probably get Watchman from the Library, because in my mind that's better than buying a book that was published under questionable circumstances).
  19. I'm considering reading Watchman, but I found out while doing research that it's not a sequel to Mockingbird. Apparently Watchman was written first with the idea that an adault Scout goes home, and finds out that her happy memories of her hero father don't match the reality. The editors of the time thought that the flashbacks to her childhood were more interesting then the portions of the book sent in the then present day, and asked for her to rewrite the book to be about Scout's childhood: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_Set_a_Watchman I still think it may be an interesting read for what the book is, but we have to realize that its not a sequel. I have to admit that the facts that Lee had previously stated that she wouldn't publish another book, and that this all came about after the death of her sister caused Tonja Carter to be the sole executer of Lee's estate to be troubling. (Lee's sister, Alice Lee, died in November of last year, and had been quoted as saying, "can’t see and can’t hear and will sign anything put before her by anyone in whom she has confidence."
  20. Captain Carrot

    Discworld

joelene, I think most Pratchett fans will agree that you should read The Colour of Magic if you plan on reading EVERY Discworld novel. However, it is the first book in the series, and....it's a good example of how much an author can evolve. (It actually compares fairly well to many other authors in the genre, but it's lower tier Pratchett). Guards Guards! is a much better book, and a good example of Pratchett at his best.
  21. I do think they may do a soft reboot (for lack of a better term), and eliminate some stories from the canon. For example if I was in charge of Marvel, I would negate the Chuck Austen story about Nightcrawler being the son of a demon. (I mean the whole point to the character is that regardless of his appearance, he's just as human as you or me). So anyone have any opinions on other stories that should be erased from the canon?
  22. I have to agree. My Grandmother had Alzheimers, and no one should have to suffer like that. On a related note, reading 'The Last Hero' is what helped me deal with the news that Alzheimers had finally claimed my Grandmother. So, the news of his diagnosis a few later hit even harder.
