  1. I am making up my own theories about Nova/Calvin in my head just based off the cryptic stuff they say and their interaction with each other. It feels like they have been involved for awhile. So I theorize they either knew each other/were involved before he got married. I am leaning toward the theory they got involved before he got married because he seems really into her and she seems to be holding him at arms' length. Also when she told him to 'respect my choices' or something like that and he makes an exasperated comment about how she keeps him out, makes me feel like they are having an old argument. But her sitting outside his house crying almost makes me wonder if she spurned him and he moved on, got married, had kids and somehow they gravitated back toward each other and got involved again. So maybe she is regretting some of her choices? I could envision a scenario where if they did meet pre-marriage, she might have balked at being openly involved with a white cop her being an activist in Black NOLA. She might've felt that it ruined her cred. Or maybe he wants to leave his wife and she refuses to co-sign? That is the romantic in me though, well, as romantic as you can get having an affair. LOL.
  2. What a contrast between the opening of the first ep and this one. In that one, Nova and Calvin were in dark, blue bathed light, all sexy ... I mean that man was sexy helping her put on her clothes. Now this one they are in sunlight and a little at odds. She is very comfortable with their relationship being undercover of night and less so when it is bared to the day. But there is obvious history there. She went to his dad's funeral. Now he wants to support her by going to hers. He seems very unashamed about having a girlfriend. Makes me wonder if their relationship pre-dates his marriage? The tension between the sibs comes out to play. It was well done. So apparently Charley's mother is alive but distant, only to send a flower arrangement but not come to the funeral. Now I need to wonder if Nova and Ralph Angel have the same mother. I thought Ralph Angel was the youngest but maybe Charley is? Is that where some of the resentment came from? Was there some favoritism toward Charley? Also the scene at the funeral home was perfection. First it laid bare the financial differences between the sibs in a show-not-tell way. Charley pulls out her black amex with probably no limit whatsover. Nova is somewhere between blue and white collar worker and has to split her contribution over multiple cards that are probably close to their limit. And Poor Ralph Angel has no cash or credit whatsoever and his sister have to float him. But then all that is forgotten when they support Nova on her hoodoo pouch and giving that funeral home guy a death glare! Speaking of death glares, i counted at least three unleashed on various men who came for the Bordelons. First Charley and that guy who showed up at the farm. I love how steely she got with him. And Then Nova and her boss. And finally Mr. 'This is Christian Burial" Funeral guy. And again Blue with his doll. I like how sensitively they are portraying not just that, but how Ralph Angel isn't preaching some hyper masculinity shit about it. Even going so far as to settle her (Kenya) comfortably on the sink while he cuts Blue's hair. Also, I am rooting hard for Darla. She is trying and I hope there is some redemption for her in this. I loved that she showed up at the funeral and didn't just not show thus heaping more disappointment on Blue. He was so happy to see her Damn that kid is adorable. And finally, how Hot Chocolate gorgeous was Kofi Soriboe in that all white? Man, oh, man! That shot of him on the porch... I gushed about the photography on the show in the other thread but that was some other level beautiful. LOL.
  3. Oh yes! Loved that little detail. I love how the camera just lingered on the doll a couple of times, without commentary and then the very absence of anyone making anything of it. Such layers.
  4. Yes, Tina Lifford is their aunt Daddy Bordelon's sister. Regarding the sibs... Explains a little bit about Nova's tantalizing "we aren't close like that" statement when the young guy told her about the sex scandal. Couple of other things I was struck by: 1- How gorgeously lit the show is. There is a discussion in The Flash forum about how minorities are photographed on screen (usually not well). John Cho spoke about it. And he is correct. But Rutina Wesley's dark, dark skin is positively luminous which doesn't happen very often. 2- The soundtrack. The first scene of Nova and her married boo being serenaded by Meshell Ndegeocello. The backing music for so many scenes were perfect. 3- The visual cues that act as a punctuation mark re: the different sibs' life station. Charley and her fab LA lifestyle, permed hair, glass house and inifity pools compaed to Nova;s earth mother style with her nice front porch, her natural hair dreds and living across from a blighted-by-Katrina house vs. poor Ralph Angel who has nothing to call his own. 4- How wonderful were all the sweeping shots of the cane fields? 5- I thought the narrative unfolded like a novel rather than a tv show. I think this will be fine with some and not fine with others. But I like the pacing and the well timed reveals. Very much looking forward to learning more about the sib relationship, Nova's relationship with her detective (it sounds like they have been involved for years) and what happened with Ralph Angel, Bianca (don;t know her character name yet) and Blue. Also enjoying the fact that aunty is getting her flirt on with what is obviously a younger man!
  5. I loved it. It is too late so I'll probably write more tomorrow, but I just loved the lush scenery, esp. of Daddy Bordelon on the farm. The soundtrack was perfect. And and i really enjoyed how the story unfolded in little pockets with lots of spaces to just let you get a feel for the characters. You see how different the siblings are in where they are in life, their finances, even their relationship with their father. The only similarity they seem to have is their messed up love lives. LOL. My hands down favorite moment was of Grandfather, son and grandson in the hospital room. You don't get a lot of moment of unvarnished vulnerability in black men that is shown so unapologetically. That scene was largely without dialogue and it moved me so. Also it took me a hot second to recognize Bianca Lawson playing Ralph Angel's ex and Blue's mother. This chick does NOT age. She looked like she was 17 years old.
  6. I did too. I wonder if that was intentional? One the one hand it was a unifying way to open each episode and was supposed to give the subext that this was a close knit, everybody knows your name, community. But on the other hand, there is a sense of foreboding about it since it is usually cloudy in the morning and he is surrounded by all these hills and lakes. beautiful scenery but also a little sinister when you think of how alone he is out there, this little 5 yo with just his headphones on. I never did get the sense of how really far away from the house he was. Also in the finale
  7. I must preface this by saying that I was not a fan of Adore's. And while watching her season I felt frustrated because I felt that a lot of the performing challenges were right in her wheelhouse and that she was passed through without a lot of real criticism. I mean, Michelle did but I feel that Ru protected Adore to some extent and even Bianca took her under her wing. In comparion, Trinity K. Bonet struggled and received some harsh yet fair criticism. So when Adore wilted immediately citing Michelle's criticism and this wasn't like she imagined it was going to be, all i could think of was "Well of course you can't hack it! Here you are accepted into the AP class but only because you got good grades just for showing up in the remedial class." I really, really rolled my eyes very hard at her. Come on! Like WTF was she expecting? I love that Michelle was all 'Yeah, you have your aesthtic but at the end of the day this is a reality competition." I will not miss her. I was underwhelmed by The Snatch Game. Alaska won solely on the basis of her quick wit. Her Mae West impression was ... no great. And honestly just by looking at her I would not have known she was Mae West since she just looked like a generic blonde. But she was sharp as a tack. So go her! I am sad that Tati is gone. i liked her during her season and found it interesting that this time around so many of the Queens had started to voice the same "thinking strategically" line when it came to eliminations that she was the only one to say out loud last week. Although i do wonder about what else Ru has up her sleeve WRT to the eliminated queens. She said something about revenge. i wonder if they are going to have a Survivor like final voting panel where the ousted queens are the ones who will be the final decider on who wins or not?
  8. Ok I finished this season and this was so good. Glad it was renewed. I hated Allison so much until the finale where she finally became human. I actually felt bad for her the last episode. I didn't think I'd like Eddie as much as I did but I love his character progression. Also I think his and Nicola's marriage was portrayed really honestly. Looking forward to see what happens there.
  9. I finally got around to watching this and enjoyed the format and twist quite a bit. I did love their reactions when RuPaul announced they'd be eliminating each other. Alaska and her "Welcome to All Stars!" and Alyssa with her "I'm in a complete state of shock, I forgot what I was going to say..." I actually agreed with who was safe, who was top and who was bottom. I thought Roxxxy, Tati, Alaska and even Alyssa actually performed. But Tati and Roxxxy were clearly the best, even the other queens thought so. I don't think Michelle was overly harsh on Adore. Honestly I was kinda surprised at Adore's response, first she sounded kinda snitty "It's human!" and then calling everyone "girl" and then that one point when she shrugged, everyone on the panel kinda reared at little because she did sound like she was like "oh well, whatever." I know she was upset and looked like she was bout to cry, but really, damn, that is no excuse. Suck it up. You are a Drag Queen on a nationally televised reality competition. I do agree Michelle did not critique her performance, but in fairness Michelle didn't critique the performance of any of the Queens that only sang. She only critiqued their looks, she talked about Ginger's jumpsuit and Phi Phi' boxy little dress. Tati and Katya looked perfect. I mean their make up was perfect. Gorgeous. Coco... welp, she had a nice dress. Seriously, though she did deserve to go. What even was that? Also, i loved how they contrast with the Queens agonizing over their decision while Ru and Panel were laughing it up drinking their foofy drinks. It is interesting, I kinda agree with both Roxxxy and Tati's approach. Roxxxy is using the judges as her yardstick, but Tati is using her own discretion also thinking more strategically. This twist is really interesting
  10. Naw 24/7 was a term used way before Sports Center. It is a case of popular street terminology , usually coined by Af-Am tenagers being used and popularized on tv. Jumping the Shark is a tv specific reference turned into an actual idiomatic term. 'You go, girl' was popularized by Martin Lawrence's show Martin.
  11. It doesn't help they always seemed to be eye fucking each other or talking meaningfully about their bond while staring soulfully at each other.
  12. I agree about the mom. Everyone is flawed and has some issues or selfish moments, but hers are just soo... unpleasant. I just finished episode three? The one with her old school friend Maggie who is the occupational therapist wokring with Joe. I loved her calling Alison a bully because she does feel like one. And then later on when Allisontracks down Maggie at her office I love how Maggie tries to get her to realize all of her reactions to Joe are selfish. So yeah Allison is the worst. I am kinda liking Nicola, the SIL's boss. He is kinda an ass but he's kinda funny. He's growing on me. I feel bad for the older daughter Rebbeca. I like how she isn't some sullen caricature and she's really good with Joe.
  13. Full rides do exist, but it isn't always about good grades. If you are a desirable athlete being wooed by a Division 1 school -- You get tuition, room and board. Most school aid comes from three sources: School aid, State aid and Federal aid. All three of these have different criteria and guidelines. State and Federal tend to be the most restrictive in criteria. Also some aid is purely need based, some if purely merit based, and some is a complex calculation of the two. Many schools offer tuition remission or have tuition exchange agreements. If your parent works there (or at a partner school in an exchange agreement) , you go to the school for free as long as you meet the regular admission criteria. Some schools offer special programs to reach out to smart need based students who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford school. For instance there is at least one Ivy league school that will give a full ride to a student who graduates at valedictorian or salutatorian level from their school, with at least 3.5 gpa as long as their family falls within a very specific low income range. Stuff like that. There is another school that offers a staggering amount, that includes a stipend, based on a student fitting a specific profile (what that profile is, is kept secret since the scholarship is donated money by a rich donor family) and it is neither need nor merit based. So technically a very mediocre graded student whose family has a ton of money could get it. There is also aid based on the major you are entering. Some schools offer full rides if you go into nursing or teaching or even loan forgiveness. If you enter the ROTC programs at school you can get scholarships plus stipends. And any combination of these could also lead to full rides.
  14. Not only inside the house in front of a window, but outside the house too. Cheaters always take a moment to hold hands and kiss right next to car conveniently parked beside the motel sign before going into the motel.
  15. I loved this episode. Even though I am thoroughly upset that Khlyen is dead because I loved his brand of anti-hero in all of this and Rob Stewart is just a fine looking man so i will miss the hell out of him. But this felt like a Killjoys episode. Something I can't say about a lot of the episodes this season. Khlyen came through with both critical information and solution and brought the emotion for the crew. And of course there was Fancy. These two immediately injected some adrenaline into the episode, which begs the question why were they so under utilized this season? Why didn't Dutch & Co hook up with Fancy and Khlyen much earlier and work together sooner? All the revelations in this one episode could have easily been expanded to multiple episodes. Heck we could have had an entire flashback episode of Khlyen's experiments, how it affected his team and actually showed Aneela's descent into madness. Instead we had to sit through an episode with a man who lived too long, a bunch of missing kids in a deserted school, a spooky bug hunt, D'avin's bartender girlfriend an so on. And in the end what did they actually contribute to this ending? I did love the episodes with Pawter's family because it tied in well with what Delle was up to and it gave a much needed glimpse of the world of the Nine. But otherwise, everything else felt like treading water. Outside of the awesome premiere and a couple of other episodes, this season really was a big disappointment for me. I hope next season is better.
  16. I like how each episode seems to be about examining a particular character, either their background or filling in pieces about the character. This time it was Android's turn. Sure not a lot of forward movement on overall plot, except of course the stuff with Four and hinting rather largely that the Raza may soon be involved with the fate of his planet. And the genesis of the virus in the first place. Where did it really come from and what was the real purpose for it beyond the possible destruction of Android? But Zoie Palmer really killed it in this episode. Nice nuanced portrayal there. As Android she continues to show how she's developing beyond just her robotic programming, but she's doing it in increments. When she is dreaming in that fab house with her boyfriend, she still isn't quite human, not like when she had the chip. She continues with the mechanical mannerisms of the android, but softened up just a little. Then as the Red Android she is completely robotic, nerveless, but with just a hint of AI menace that hovers under all portrayals of AIs, but you aren't quite sure is real or not. Until of course she tips right over in the end. So yeah, well done by her! I am liking the running gag of Two saving Three's life. Especially since Three is the one that gave him the most grief after they broke out of the prison. Two hours next week!
  17. I agree, I loved Killyjoys last season, but man it bums me out how i think S2 has lost its way some. Meanwhile, I think season 2 of DM has improved on S1 so much. Also DM I am liking how DM is handling romance/sex. It is there (how could it not be with a group of good looking, healthy people all living together in each other's space) but it doesn't overpower the plot.
  18. I agree with this. I don't mind romance in a show. I like romance. I especially like them when I see a couple that would be great together. But in a show that isn't ostensibly a romantic drama or a soap, allowing romantic angst to overshadow or even .... flavor strongly... important plot developments can be annoying. Sometimes it can work if incorporated well and sometimes it doesn't. I think in this case it doesn't. I am finding all the relationship stuff a little overwrought, tbh and get impatient with all the agita.
  19. Last year I lovedKilljoys and was rather meh on Darkmatter. Mainly because DM had a darker tone and I like my space opera to be a little lighter with more zing. But I've done a 180 this season. Killjoys had lost some of its verve and honestly I feel like the season long arc has gotten twisted in on itself. Meanwhile DM has injected a bit more humor and their overall story feels tighter, more cohesvie. Last season I enjoyed KJ more this season I am enjoying DM more.
  20. I had no idea it was even on until I decided to check out twitter. And then I followed only on twitter just to see what the buzz was. So I tuned in just in time to see Beyonce and Rihanna's 2nd and 3rd set. So glad I did! I enjoyed those performances. Went to bed right after 'Bitch Betta have my Money' was too tired to watch more and honestly it was enough just to see Bey do her thing. Had to cut away a couple of times. I have a soft spot for Kanye, but no, not even that would make me listen to him give a free-form speech for minutes on end. And I had to change the channel when Britney came on. Given how much they were completely hyping her, there was no way she could deliver up to expectation esp. given that she performed right after Beyonce. Poor thing. Seriously, Bey is at the top of her creative form right now, Britney would have had to have been absolutely spectacular to follow that and not invite comparisons. So no, I had to cut away for a bit. Maybe it is just the folks I follow on twitter (I follow lots of authors and WOC actors, activists) but I got a lot of 'Damn, I feel old' and 'Who are these people?' LOL. I also experienced second hand embarrassment for Key and Peele just for the few segments I saw. Man they bombed hard! And it is a shame because those two are legitimately funny.
  21. Oh man, I did not like this episode. Yeah, I don't like the fact that Pawter died. She grew on me. I do think her role this season felt a little weirdly amped up and her romance with Johnny felt a little insta-love. But still i liked where they seemed to be taking her role. But then they killed her. And as much as I like Delle as a villain, she has gotten positively mustache-twirly which always turns me off. Last season the show did a good job of building the world and showing the differences between the quad planets and creating relationships between everyone with each successive episode. Now this season seems to be narrowing that with each episode. Is Delle that bad ass that no one else in any other family is worthy to challenge her, is onto her, isnt already doing their own similar thing? You'd think someone would have copped to her after that genetic bomb thingy from last season. Pawter was positioned to be that person to really challenge her, and given the glimpse we saw of their girlish rivalry it would have been great to watch that power struggle unfold. So it is a shame they went the direction they did. Instead of delicious political rivalry we got shocking!death! And God, i hate that Jelco has become such a cockroach. Will nothing get rid of him? Also Khlyen and Fancy and level 6 are so central to Dutch's big mystery and yet they are MIA for many episodes. Instead we get thrown random walk on characters each episode that disappear just as quickly. I would have not thought it could happen with such a fun and crazy show, but the last couple of eps have been rather depressing. Sure the quips are fast and furious, but the tone has gotten so dark.
  22. But all that sweaty sparring over the past how ever many episodes was their build up. Dontcha know? That was - ha ha - fourplay. Seriously, it did make me sit up and say "well, Hello!" when the show started with just those two. I like them as a couple. I like how Dark Matter does romance overall so far. It doesn't try to make romance part of the show but instead acknowledge that a group of prime adults all stuck together will probably result in some sexy times. And allows that to be an element of the show, but not necessarily a focus. Yeah, after he shot him, I was like "Behead him! Behead him!" His nanites will probably fix the hole in his head and he'll be ready for revenge soon. One of the things I am liking about this season of DM is how it is injecting little bits of humor amongst the episodes. It is still about the Raza and their David vs. Goliath mission. But it doesn't feel and dark and fraught as it did last season. These two guys punched up the scene in an amusing way with just their body languages. How they wilted in unison when faced with Two. Or their defensive posture when she demanded their retinas.' Also "House of Frying Daggers." Ha. Great name for a Chinese take-out place. I enjoyed this episode a lot. Mainly because it was nice getting some more back story on Two, the complications it set up with the black goo, Wil Wheaton's character (of course this isn't gonna be his last appearance), and Four's story, the continuing forgiveness arc of Six by Three. So it packed a lot in and kept the momentum going.
  23. I don;t know why, but thinking of Regina King on Southland made me think of Tracy on Rookie Blue. Also a single mother with a deadbeat ex. The only one of the rookies with a kid. She did get a nice love interest though with Det. Jerry, but then they went and offed him. Then she started up with Steve who in the end was a dirty cop. Between her role as stalwart single mom, her unlucky love life and her rapidly disappearing screen time, she couldn't catch a break.
  24. Oh yeah, I just thought it was cool how you kinda knew which universe you were going to be watching based on the color scheme/scientific breakthroughs flashed during the credits. Also on the TWOP boards someone actually deciphered all the glyphs they showed each episode and figured out that episode's word. I really ate that up like a biscuit. Added another layer to watching the show.
  25. Once in awhile Fringe would bust out some context specific opening credits. They did an 80s flashback epsiode and the opening credits were 80s retro. And then when the show started talking place in the alt universe the color of the opening credits changed. The regular universe was blue but if the ep was gonna take place in the alt. universe it was red. And then when they started doing things with the timelines, those credits changed as well. Somebody compiled the different ones here. I also like the theme song. So very much perfect for the show.
