Yeah, I recognized Allison Scagliotti as well...mainly because she was basically playing Archaeolaudia. Not to cast aspersions on her acting ability, it's just that all she needed was a Tesla and bam. I also noted the siren control being different from normal vampiric compulsion, but it's somewhat like Original compulsion. The Originals' compulsion victims frequently protested it (at least when they were vampires IIRC). Off the top of my head there was Slater, when Elijah told him to stake himself, and Tyler, when Rebekah told him to turn into a werewolf. I think Katherine may have continued freaking out when Elijah told her to stay in the crypt, but it's been a long time. Lots of callbacks, which were great, but are also just what you do in the final season of a show, so not unexpected. What was unexpected was the Siren mythology, which I'm going to say they had planned since the Armory became a thing. Some of the pieces of the puzzle fit a little too well for it not to have been planned. Of course, now that they're going Greco-Roman, it just makes me sad that they never used the idea I had for an Olympian to manipulate a group of vampires into attacking the MF squad (out of revenge for killing off like a quarter of the vampire population via Kol). Are we going to assume that there's a reason why the Siren looks like another Elena-lite (like Reina)? Did we get a reason for why Reina looked similar to Elena? Yes, the "Hello Brother" could be seen as cheesy, but I was grinning from ear to ear and saying it along with Damon when he did. Loved the old S1 Damon theme coming into play as well. I like it when a show respects the story it has written for better or worse, and the journey has been enjoyable even if to varying degrees. I'll always appreciate that it healed the wounds Smallville had inflicted on me and never got as bad as that show was.

And in LoT: don't forget Mick Rory, who frequently gets called by his surname, and how Arthur Darvill gets referred to as Rory because of his role on Doctor Who. Thankfully, one imagines that Ruve is gone for good, or else we would have a real problem.
-
The scene where Oliver gets the two-bit thief to confess regarding the Stardust (hee) also felt pretty Nolan Batman. It was like a combination of the scenes where Batman threatens Flass and where he threatens Maroni. Other than that, I liked the episode. Rory is my favorite noob, but to be honest of course he is, he's probably the only one (other than maybe Evelyn) who should be in the field with Oliver, and he's also the one the writers seem to want us to like. Wild Dog is exactly that, a wild dog. And I couldn't help but roll my eyes when Curtis was OF COURSE knowledgeable in the skill they needed when Felicity had to do something else. Still, I hope none of them die, if only because it tides me over until the Power Rangers movie. Sorry, that was just the image I had when Curtis, Felicity, Rene, Evelyn and Rory were all looking at Oliver. Mayo has to be working for Prometheus somehow. At least I hope so, since that way he's something other than an Olicity obstacle. (btw, I feel like I already asked this and was answered, but why was that chick on the island called Poppy?)

Probably, although he associates the Devil with torture both topside and in the cage, so if he does it's purely Stockholm syndrome. Or who knows? Maybe once Luci bites it trying to save the boys and later Sam has a loving flashback of their time together it won't seem ridiculous, but it would certainly be sad. I would characterize his relationship with Meg differently though.
-
Sam may also feel a twisted kinship with Meg because she possessed him for a good long while. In a way, he knew her like he knows only a few people.

Fandom and Viewer Issues: "Fan" Is Short for "Fanatic"

I'll toss some support behind Cleavage Croc. -
I think it's also a Superman thing, since it was a place in Smallville.

I'm certainly guilty of fixating on the unrepentant rape both Mills sisters have engaged in. I don't post here all that frequently, but on Tumblr I've definitely given a no-holds-barred blast to Regina at least once, and was pretty roundly condemned for it (mostly because I don't understand tag "ownership"; I guess it's considered poor form to critique a character without tagging it anti, which seems bizarre but okay). So I can certainly understand people getting tired of hearing the same things. On the other hand, it would be great to have these issues addressed in canon so we can move on. If the show is content to wallow in s1, wouldn't the fans be likely to do the same? -

I'm pretty sure the point when I started seeing red wrt Regina was when Snow heroically protected everyone and saved two worlds by stopping Cora from becoming the Dark One...only to be smacked down by the narrative for "murdering Regina's mother." That was when I realized the show would never be impartial toward her. It went downhill fast from there. My anti-Regina stance has little to do with ships. Also, incidentally if I weren't already watching in S3 I'd be watching for Zelena, but that's more to do with the actress. -
Upon First Viewing...: New Viewers to the Buffyverse

I'm currently starting season 5. I'm up to episode 3, and I already hate this character. No, I won't say who. Anyone who has seen the show hopefully already knows who I'm talking about. In fairness, I'm coming from the Vampire Diaries, where the thing that happened is treated as a huge deal if it ever happens, so as soon as the person did the thing I screamed out loud and probably took it worse than I would have in 2002 or whatever, but wow. Wow. -
EDIT: I did not mean for those spoilers to be nested. I'm currently at (but haven't watched) S04-E20. I guess I'm moderately spoiled? Thanks to cultural osmosis, I knew about

Hi all, newish Watcher here--my girlfriend and I are about 2/3 through season 4, on our first trek through the series. I've been listening to the Tiny Fences podcast, featuring the only other person on earth doing the same thing. Are there any other good podcast recommendations for someone in this boat, or should I just stick with FT for now?

S02.E17: Wrath Of The Villains: Into The Woods
DigitalCount replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Gotham
Probably the continued abuse from his new family weakened it, then the shock of discovering that they had murdered his father shattered it. In fairness, it was probably pretty fragile to begin with; I don't think Dr. Strange is particularly trustworthy when it comes to this sort of thing. -

What is this nonsense I don't even "You bring my digital media and I'll bring yours. We'll just not make 16 copies of each and save them in 16 different places because of, I dunno, the honor system." "#seasonofseason1loveinterests" "Everybody be quiet, apparently Jenna's hearing is so bad (because she's blind, TM Hanna) that she can only hear us if she's three feet away and facing us, but she can totes smell our blood because she's kinda Daredevil." "I'm pregnant, Emily. And you're the father." "Hey everybody, so I kind of became A for a while, and really for no reason, but that's why pencils have erasers!" "You know too much! Actually, you barely know anything, but um, I'm supposed to die soon, so go with it; it's not the least believable part of this sequence by far anyway." "Spencer, I'm your mother. Yes, my entire character purpose is to make things that made a modicum of sense no longer make any sense whatsoever, and now Jason is both your half-brother and your double cousin, but it happens."- 149 replies

Remember when Hanna was a secret genius? Or when Spencer was an actual genius? Wow. Also, this dialogue: Jason: You're not a relative. *anvil clunk* Why did Aria tell Jason she was at the house with Ali? She was conspicuously absent and could have just said Ali told her what had happened. And now that we have confirmation that Arson sex happened, of course she's his relative.

The fact that this is a reasonable question to ask regarding this episode says it all, really.

S07.E07: Original G'A'ngsters
DigitalCount replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Pretty Little Liars [V]
So can we assume that Noel didn't write the message on the car this time? It would be pretty dumb if he just used the same modus operandi as before, but dumb has never stopped these geniuses before. Also, so not here for the Aria is a Secret Targaryen nonsense that's sure to come up. I guess it could also be Nicole or Noel, but Jason never had a romance with Noel or Nicole. I seem to remember a hard cut to Aria at dinner after they realized that Mary had another kid, but I might be remembering it wrong. In any case, I'd have suggested Yvonne if she didn't look exactly like Rick Fox, but maybe Rick Fox will show up playing himself as one of Mary's "former lovers." All it would take is one away game or some time on the lam in LA... Also, given that this constitutes pondering the plot and theorizing, it's officially not worth the effort. -
S07.E06: Wanted: Dead or Alive
DigitalCount replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Pretty Little Liars [V]
You know it's funny you should say this, because I couldn't help but feel that he's a bit scruffier this season. It was just the initial impression I got of him when he appeared for fourteen seconds. I agree that one of the best aspects of Noel Kahn is his full naming. Veronica Mars also got this a lot, which is funny because Noel is very Logan at times throughout the series. I also think that as a villain he's villainous without being full-on despicable, which is not the case for literally every other villain on the show. After all-- Charlotte: obvious Mona: hit Hanna with a car Jenna: rapist Sarah: water-wasting cyborg Speaking of, I'll just sit alone in this corner of people who'll miss that brave little toaster. I love Dre Davis and her bizarre fairy-like manner. It was fitting that she died as she lived, though. That was quite the fan shout-out. -
S07.E06: Wanted: Dead or Alive

Hanna getting back with Caleb would be proof for me that she truly is Aria's tulpa. Both of them cheated on their understanding, intelligent boyfriends to get with someone terrible (at least, now he is--I never thought Caleb could fall so far) and both would be rewarded for their terrible behavior. At the same time, Caleb is as stated a terrible person, so maybe they deserve each other. I feel as if I have to take notes, because by the time I get a chance to post I have forgotten about half the stupid stuff these idiots have done. Also, Mary Drake is an oversharer, and I hope the actor for that cop had prosthetics or something on his head. -
Funny, he makes me think of Bryan Fury. I hope they don't call him Detective Fury too often. Or actually, maybe they should, and then I can have fun imagining that a cyborg from a fighting game just happened to end up in Rosewood. Let's be honest, it makes as much sense as some of the storylines they actually come up with. Not much to say, except: did Aria really "sweeten the pot" with the security guy at Archer's apartment by giving him a fake number? That only works for short-term escapes where the guy has no further interactions with your life. How exactly was that supposed to work? Wouldn't that make him more inclined to report them when the cops came later? That would have worked better with just the money than the number for a restaurant. As soon as he calls it he'll have a reason to feel spiteful toward them, and given that they were obstructing justice and actually did kill Archer, the guy could feel more than justified in assisting in their arrests.

S07.E04: Hit and Run, Run, Run
DigitalCount replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Pretty Little Liars [V]
Actually, to be fair, Hanna could probably get charged with murder on the basis of her testimony, if some magical recording device were to have picked up what she said to Mona. Neither premeditation nor malice aforethought really require you to sit in a hotel room with dim lighting and a slice of graph paper charting out your every move from point A to point B. Both can happen in a very short amount of time indeed; all that's generally required is to have enough time to consider and appreciate the wrongfulness of one's actions and to decide to act anyway. What Hanna described could be defined by those terms; on the other hand, there is an argument to be made for sudden heat overtaking her due to her treatment at Wrick's* hands, bumping down the charge to manslaughter. If what she told Mona is a faithful representation of what happened rather than just her guilt overriding her better judgment, the writers may have inadvertently made Hanna a murderer, putting Hanna and Mona in a class of their own among the Liars. *calling him Wrick instead of Elliott, because as we now know, the latter isn't actually his name -

If Hanna does not have ownership of Caleb, then what makes Caleb a data point in this graph you're constructing of Spencer's "pattern"? Would you care to list the people you think adhere to this troubling trend you've mentioned and why they demonstrate something bad about Spencer, rather than the alternative of being men who prey on teenage girls, as Ezra did with Aria and Alison? You've used a lot of general terms here to describe an overall trend. What are the specifics that support your reading of the trend or the assertion that the trend even exists? -

Just so I understand: We're not giving Spencer a pass for a) being 14 and b) "going after" a single guy? So if I'm getting this right, Spencer was in the wrong for pursuing grown men who were already engaged while she was a child. Spencer was in the wrong for assuming that Hanna doesn't have some sort of right of first refusal on Caleb's singlehood, and she never should have allowed herself to catch feelings for a person Hanna hasn't dated in years. Because it is Hanna's choice who Caleb dates after her and how he chooses to move on. Is that a good summary of the situation as it stands? -
Past Seasons Talk: A is Everywhere
DigitalCount replied to calliesu's topic in Pretty Little Liars [V]
I'll still never forget that tense conversation between Peter, Toby and Spencer that ends with Peter punching the side of the truck. That was scary like horror-movie scary, and now the show is practically a cartoon in comparison. Also, while recasts usually make me so freaking annoyed, I agree that Jason's recast was the right choice and wish that Drew Van Acker had been locked in from the start. He's the perfect merging of DiLaurentis and Hastings, which Jason #1 wasn't. Actually, now that I think of it, Jason #1 looked more like a Hastings than a DiLaurentis, which is interesting in and of itself. I wonder if that was always the plan... -
S07.E04: Hit and Run, Run, Run
DigitalCount replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Pretty Little Liars [V]
Yeah, I agree on both of these. The show does not demonize Jenna as she deserves to be. Even when Emily blasted her it was more in the sense of "you're a bad person who hurt my friend in a romantic context" rather than "you forced a person to have sex with you against his will." Jenna is a monster who got hurt for unrelated reasons. Really, all of the former villains get a kind of rose-colored edit for whatever reason. Mona, Jenna, Ezra, Charlotte, Ali, Pigtunia...the list goes on. Furthermore, if Spencer broke up with Caleb, it does make sense for him to move out. If she didn't, then she was kissing another man while still in a relationship with Caleb. And finally, Hanna most definitely was trying to break Caleb and Spencer up last season, blatantly and frequently. The most common defense, even here, was that it was Spencer's fault for getting with Caleb, and Ian and Wren were brought in as proof of modus operandi. I see no proof there other than proof that Melissa seems attracted to grown men who are attracted to teenage girls. Furthermore, as has been said, Hanna committed the bigger infraction of cheating on her actual fiance. In-story, it doesn't matter that the audience doesn't care about Jordan, because Hanna did (or said she did). He didn't deserve any of Hanna's treatment of him that we've seen. You can't call dibs forever, even after you ostensibly move on. Should it be expected for Hanna to get married and still have a say in who her high-school ex dates years later?
