I see it a different way. He supports all the stances that "woke" is supposed to represent. He's never said otherwise. There's really nothing to debate there, so he doesn't. He's open to learning new terms as we saw this week (but not getting browbeaten for not already knowing them) & is accepting of them when explained to him, although if I had to hazard a guess, he's not exactly down with the idea of people having even one spirit, much less two. What he rails against, constantly, are the extreme examples where it goes too far & doesn't allow for forgiveness, or personal growth over time. Not to get too personal, but I was raised in a small, southern, rural town. Luckily I'm old enough that Twitter & Facebook didn't exist, but I was quite homophobic growing up, because it's all I knew, or was taught. Once I left my hometown & went to college, I changed my views. I expanded my life experiences & circle of friends. As well as my mindset. I experienced how wrong I was, through interactions with other people. But if someone dug up my (hypothetical) tweets from decades ago, I'd probably get canceled, no matter how much I've changed since then & now completely support LGBTQ rights. So I think what Bill is pointing out is how much that is costing Democrats support, when they cancel someone who is ostensibly an ally. Not only do they get turned off, but their friends get turned off, their supporters get turned off, their followers get turned off. And the Republicans have a field day with it. I like that Bill is pointing this out. I think Bill's main point is: if the Democrats didn't go SO overboard with this stuff, they'd have a lot more supporters. And I think it's worth him harping on it - it does good, IMO.
-
And he did, didn't he? But he showed no symptoms. Had to cancel a show (or two?), but no actual symptoms. I think it only reinforced his view that being "relatively healthy" is a big factor in hospitalization/survival. I don't think he's wrong to emphasize "general unhealthiness" as a factor, much like I didn't think Michelle Obama was wrong to do so. I also agree with those who point out it's not an easily, or quickly correctable condition. It's frustrating that both get pushback for even bringing it up - both from the right & the left (& normally I hate both-sidesing an issue, but it's clearly the case here). If no one is even pointing it out as a correlation or even a factor, much less trying to do anything about it, then nothing will ever get done, & those stats will only get worse as time passes.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
ICantDoThatDave replied to BetterButter's topic in Movies
I don't trust those types of "early reactions", for any movie. They're always over-the-top positive, even for what later turn out to be terrible movies & flops. I've literally never seen an early reaction, for any film, that was like "meh, it was OK.". So I'll wait for some general audience reactions before deciding to see it now or just wait a month & a half. -
This is probably it! Just kidding, but I found that especially funny. :)

This is not that surprising, really, IMO. Putting aside the writing (I'll get to that in a moment), we only have to look at the WWE for a parallel (which is a surprisingly good analogy to super hero movies). When a Hero makes a heel turn, they are more universally reviled than the "standard" villains. The audience feels betrayed, particularly when the character turns on their other beloved "heroes". Conversely, when a villain makes a Face turn & goes through redemption, it's much easier to get the audience on their side. See the Loki Disney+ show: he didn't actually go through the years/events "real" Loki did. He just watched a video. Literally a few days ago he had murdered Phil Coulson & killed hundreds (thousands?) or New York citizens in a bid to take over the Earth. But audiences accepted him as a reformed baddie, full of remorse & sympathy nonetheless. Because that's how we're wired, I suppose. It's easier to go from a Bad Guy to a Good Guy, or at least a not-Bad Guy, while a Hero who falls from grace is reviled. That said, the writing for Sharon's heel turn was godawful & made almost no sense.

You're not wrong, but the people forget how shaky the MCU was at the beginning. When people lament the lack of Black Widow or Hawkeye solo movies, they forget that even the first Cap movie was one of the lowest grossing MCU movies ever (I think it actually was the lowest until Black Widow). Iron Man was a surprising hit at the time it came out. Iron Man 2 was not really well received but made a decent amount of money. Thor 1 & 2 did well, but didn't exactly break the bank. I'm glad they are finally giving the "lesser" Avengers their own spotlight, but doing so earlier would have been extremely risky & could have jeopardized the whole Universe (that sounded more ominous than I intended). Early on the MCU was essentially in the precarious position it kinda is now, where no one knows whether they can sustain their success. I'm not sure Phase 4 is gonna succeed (I don't mean they'll crash & burn, just that they'll probably start doing mediocre box office #'s), & if way back when they had announced a Hawkeye movie instead of, say Iron Man 3 (which I didn't particularly like but was a box office win) or Winter Soldier, the whole MCU could have gone off the rails. Think Solo or Justice League, for example, which doomed a lot of planned projects. I guess my point is, I'm glad they took the path they took, even if it means we are only now getting Black Widow & Hawkeye focused movies/shows.

That's encouraging.

I enjoyed the season 2 premiere. A lot of callbacks to season 1, with some good setup for season 2. My one complaint would be that as much as Courtney's studied the JSA she should know anyone who could wield The Lantern isn't a bad guy. Like if you ran across someone holding Mjolnir. Just an excuse for a "the good guys fight before they team up" scene. The only thing that worries me is the inevitable CW-ification of this show. The lack of goofy romances, love triangles, & teen angst were a nice plus to season 1.

I'm starting to feel like I'm some sort of dirty version of the Farmers Only match app at this point (kinda redundant, I know), but... Kel Varnsen, I'd like to introduce you to Sam Wilson, goes by Falcon sometimes, or Captain America might work in your search if you limit it to the last few months. If you're not interested in him, I could recommend Agent Coulson, but his exact location in the multiverse is tough to pin down. Everett Ross is available, but he may or may not be chasing after the One Ring. Also, if you're feeling ambitious, Nick Fury might be your type, but he's... hard to reach at the moment, depending on how strong your cell reception is. EDIT: I believe you might also find a Match in the Agents of Shield show &/or the Peggy Carter show. We do aim to please!

Definitely disagree with this. I like that when the discussion has gone off the rails (as happened in this episode) or just petered out (as happens in other episodes), Bill pulls his Moderator Card & goes "ok, next topic". IMO, he's good at recognizing when a topic has been run into the ground & they need to move on. I also like that he covers several topics, & does a Hard Stop on any one topic monopolizing the whole show. Not saying you're wrong, just that I differ in how I like how he moderates things in that specific respect.

I noticed that, too. He kept doing that thing, in conversations, where it's clear the other person has something they desperately want to say, where they're like "Well I th-" but the initial speaker keeps talking & making points, & then they're like "Well I th-" & but the initial speaker keeps elaborating & doesn't pause, & they're still like "Well I th-" several times, until finally the initial speaker pauses or completes their thought (or just runs out of breath) & then finally the person waiting gets to say "Well I think..." & can *finally* just voice what they wanted to say from the beginning. Not really meant as a judgment on the what either one said, just an observation, because I'm guessing most of us have done exactly that, & I KNOW I've done exactly that, but it was absolutely funny to observe it happening.

You're not wrong, but Nance did the same thing. He was dismissive, condescending, & as has been pointed out above, went full ad hominem. They both tried to whatabout-ism* each other, & Nance pulled the "you have no experience so can't comment" card (which would honestly disqualify most of us from ever criticizing the chef at a restaurant, or any director of a movie if valid). I thought they were both terrible. Bill was, oddly, the most reasonable one on the panel. * I do wish someone on the panel had called Shapiro out on how he pointed out Nance was painting all Republicans with the Insurrectionists brush, but he had just done the same to BLM re: the rioters not a minute or two earlier

Hawkeye, I'd like you to meet Spartan Girl. Spartan Girl, this is Hawkeye.

I thought the first one was goofy fun in the spirit of the Looney Tunes. This was just paint-by-numbers dull, IMO. The "jokes" were bland & predictable, the plot was exactly what you'd expect, just a check the boxes script anybody could've come up with in their head in a matter of minutes, & probably did as soon they heard this was being made. Plus it was just too long for a kids movie.

Highest grossing movie ever!!! * * for a Tuesday in the middle of July while coming out of a pandemic & starring someone named Scarlett

I honestly can't wait 'til the new season debuts so Comedy Central stops showing during every break the most annoying commercial in the world.

The Girlfriend Experience - General Discussion
ICantDoThatDave replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The Girlfriend Experience
Just started watching this season & this is the most tame, sterile, boring show about sex I have ever seen. -
You don't get to have redemption after murdering your father, no matter how sad you are afterwards.
-
This premise seemed kinda interesting - like Family Guy meets The Secret Life of Pets, but between that C-list cast of people who are, at best, kinda funny on a good day, & the terrible trailer where when they went to pick their "best" jokes to entice people they included "It's not diarrhea, it's excite-arrhea", I think I'll pass on this show.
-
I know half the point of the show was to be a commercial for Sofi, but it just made me think they must be run by total morons so I'll be avoiding anything they do. They were OK with being portrayed as a company that would seriously consider an ad "campaign" with a guy who quit his job with no notice a few days ago, started a company yesterday, & has no staff or resources & no way to actually deliver Harrison Ford?

I don't think the Dr. Strange portals can be created in the middle of solid matter. At least, we never see any of the Sorcerers do it. It always appears in thin air, also never bisecting any solid object at the destination. It may be a precaution in the spell so they don't accidently slice a passerby at their destination in half. Now, if somebody pokes their arm or head through the portal, the Sorcerer can clearly close it on then &... slice! But also, Strange had already looked into the future at that point & knew how things had to play out.

Agreed with all this. The reason Flash & Cyborg's (& even Aquaman's) time was cut was that if you (i.e. picture "you" in the role of editor or even WB exec) are presented with a 4+ hour movie, you're gonna insist on cutting out the "lesser" characters & focus more on The Big Three: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman. If 1.5-2.0 hours *have to go*, which for a theatrical release they absolutely have to (or split it up, but apparently that wasn't an option), then those secondary characters' backstories simply have to go. DC didn't set up their universe like Marvel did by giving them all solo movies first, so your pitch, your trailer, to [Generic Audience Member] that they need go see this movie, waaay back in 2017, is **OMG!! Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman ALL IN ONE MOVIE for the first time!! OMG!!** oh, & also these other people you, the general public, either barely care about or have never heard of are in it. Absolutely agree that the movie was much better for including all that cut background stuff on Aquaman, Cyborg, Flash, even Martian Manhunter, but there was no chance it was making it into a 2-2.25 hour initial release. They hadn't done the groundwork & just wanted to skip the whole 10 year process Marvel went through & jump straight to Infinity War.

The DC Extended Universe: To Thanagar and Beyond!
ICantDoThatDave replied to MarkHB's topic in Movies
What's weird to me is I really, really like Stargirl, which is 100% Geoff Johns, & yet I kinda hate everything else he's involved with. Maybe it's because he put so much of his emotion about his sister's untimely death into that comic & that show. It's probably an anomaly, I guess, but that's a great show, IMO. But he's really screwed up everything else he's been involved with. -
I missed seeing the Flash scene under Gotham Harbor where he was scared & Batman told him "Just save one person.". It really emphasized how Flash wasn't really "up" for all this at first, & kinda had to grow into being... pardon the reference... one of the brave & the bold. That little step into being a true hero was a nice touch in the Whedon version.
