I have yet to watch it, but I believe I was the one who commented on David Chang. Fortunately, his general assishness is not of the sexual harrassment variety (as far as chefs go, he's not perfect, but he's better than most men in his field in that department). I read his memoir and there was something hard, almost cruel, about him at times, about which he seemed almost clueless. He does battle with mental illness and he is aware of that, but some of the behavior he documented in that book went beyond that. Still, it was not anything that would lead to them canceling his episode. That being said, I'm interested to see if watching him on this show changes my feelings about him.

Buying books or borrowing from the library? Which do you prefer?
OtterMommy replied to RealHousewife's topic in Books
Our library has joined the wave of getting rid of overdue fees, which is nice (although I'm more than happy to pay the fee and support the library). They've also started auto-renewing books which is VERY nice! -
I'm currently working on These Silent Woods by Kimi Cummingham Grant, with hopes to finish it before 2022 (which I should be able to easily do). So far so good, but I'm worried that this book is so hyped right now that it might not live up to my artificially high expectations. In retrospect, I probably should have waited for things around this title to calm down, but I'm far enough into it now that I don't want to stop.

Buying books or borrowing from the library? Which do you prefer?
OtterMommy replied to RealHousewife's topic in Books
Our library is pretty much back to normal. I think the only thing not back are the private study rooms. The Friends of the Library did have their book sale over the last 2 months, which was different. It was in a small room and they would only let a limited number of people in at time for no more than 20 minutes, but it still worked. -
Buying books or borrowing from the library? Which do you prefer?

I don’t keep a lot of books once I’ve finished reading them so, for that reason, I prefer the library. Plus, more library usage means more money for the library and I’m all for that. However, if I read a book that I absolutely love from the library, I will buy a copy of it to add to my keeper shelf. -
A few things as we go into this show. For the sake of the episode threads, do not consider the book. You are free to discuss the book and how the show follows or departs from it in the Book Talk thread. Please be careful of spoilers. Discussion in the episode threads should be limited to that episode. Earlier episodes may be referenced, but the focus needs to be on the episode for that thread. Spoilers are not allowed in the episode threads (I'll tag episode threads as NO SPOILERS to remind us all!). To discuss things that do not pretain to the show, such as COVID, please use the Small Talk thread. And, finally, please remember Primetimer's few, but crucial, Site Rules, as all apply here as they do in other forums and topic. If you have any questions, please PM me. Thank you!

I loved The Eighth Detective. It's probably in my top 5 of books I've read this year.

Comments about supposed racist aspects of the different teams have gone far enough. Time to move off from it. Thanks!

I agree with this. Roy and Keeley have actually had a pretty dynamic relationship and every time they come to some sort of obstacle, they grow from it (it's fun...and strange, in a good way...to watch). I think what we're seeing now is Roy having to deal with his own insecurities. He thinks Keeley is awesome and powerful and he's not sure where he fits in. He's a coach, but he's no longer a player--which is how he has always defined himself. I think this played out in his reactions to Nate kissing Keeley and Jamie professing his love to her. It could be argued that what Nate did was worse--it was a violation, whereas Jamie may have done a dick move, but without any ill intent. But Nate was never a threat to Roy. Even when Nate was the equipment manager and bullied by the players, Roy stood up for him. Jamie, however, is sort of the symbol of Roy's insecurities. He's a young player at the top of his game who Roy might see as his replacement. But, even when dealing with Jamie, Roy is growing--case in point when he (much to his own chagrin) forgave Jamie. So, I expect to see Roy and Keeley working through their relationship next season, but I don't see the relationship coming to an end. I also bet that Roy takes Phoebe on holiday with him because Phoebe is the one person, besides Keeley, who means anything to him. And it would be beyond cute.

I have so many thoughts about the fight they had when he suggested he sell the business and she quit her job. On the one hand, yeah...he does need to be around more and I can't imagine that their business brings in any profit whatsoever. On the other hand, even though her job may be bringing her face to face with the minions of Satan, I still really resented the fact that he expected her to quit. Even putting aside the fact that she is a grown ass woman and has the right to have a job she finds fulfilling, she had a point that it was her job that paid the bills and provided the benefits. On yet another hand (I'm apparently an octopus), I can't imagine that the Catholic church pays that well or that their benefits are that great. She probably could make more money by quitting, starting her own practice, and buying the family health insurance. Mostly, though, I don't understand what the point of Andy is. He could have fallen off Mt. Everest and it wouldn't change this show one bit. Also, why hasn't anyone (other than the possible spawn of Satan daughter) expressed any concern over the fact that Sheryl is worshipping a creepy doll? ETA: I forgot to mention I am a little relieve that we aren't just over the fact that Kristin is a murderer after her friend basically admitted that she knew and then declared it an unsolved/cold case. I was afraid that would just be the end of that...

I finished Jennifer Weiner's That Summer today. I didn't have high expectations for it since it is in the same universe as Big Summer, and I really didn't enjoy that one. However, TS worked far better for me. I think there is a trilogy going on--you don't need to read Big Summer before reading That Summer, but my spidey-sense is leading me to believe you will probably need to read both before reading Last Summer, which comes out next year. I started Black Water Sister by Zen Cho. I'm not far into yet, but it's pretty much a girl haunted by her dead grandmother. I'm intrigued...
