Yes, this thread replaces the old thread. The previous thread included Harvey Weinstein in the title and wanted the thread to reflect that he's not the only predator in the entertainment business.

I've been thinking about this, and here is what I think happened: First, I think that Amazon made a few miscalculations. One of the benefits of adapting an established property is that you are guaranteed an audience. Louise Penny has a strong following, and they were counting on her audience to become their audience. Because of that, Amazon didn't put the energy into promoting this show as they probably needed to. Thus, while it got good ratings, it didn't exceed the ratings they felt were the baseline. The other issue I read articles from a few sources was that Amazon received a fair amount of backlash from LP for the series departing from the books. I don't know what that backlash entailed--did people actually contact Amazon to complain, or was it just online? I don't know. Personally, I think this complaint is rather silly. It's one thing to say that you don't like the changes--that's fair. However, to say that you don't like the show because it wasn't exactly like the book series is not. All adaptations make changes. I can't think of a single book-to-series or book-to-movie that didn't make changes. This is not to say that I don't think the production bears some responsibility. The writers, or whoever made the decisions, made a gamble that they could move away from the town of Three Pines and focus primarily on Gamache, and that gamble did not pay off. I know from posts Louise Penny made that she fought against this move away from the town. Perhaps they should have listened to the one who created it all. All this being said, I am said they decided not to give it a 2nd season. I think that the writers probably could have righted the show and made it into something really special.

Bad news: Louise Penny has posted that Amazon has chosen not to continue with this series.

Basically, it’s chili-ish with Asian spices. Not at all authentic Asian, but very tasty. This recipe comes from a Booktuber named Bandy’s Books: Chinese Chile Serves: 6 Ingredients: 1.5 (ish) lbs. Ground Pork 1 Red Bell Pepper (small dice) 1 Green Bell Pepper (small dice) 1 White Onion (small dice) 5 cloves Garlic (grated or minced) 1 tbs. Ginger (grated or minced) 1-2 tbs. Soy Sauce 2 tbs. Hoisin Sauce 1 tbs. Rice Vinegar 12 oz. Beer (Blonde, Pale Ale, Lager) 14 oz. Tomato Sauce 1 tbs. Chinese 5 Spice Sichuan Peppercorns (finely ground) To Taste 1 tbs. Hot Chili Sesame Oil Green Onions & Sesame Seeds for garnish Directions: 1. In a large pot, heat the hot chili sesame oil until shimmering. 2. Add the ground pork and cook until just browned. 3. Add the bell peppers and onion. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until veggies become tender. 4. Stir in the garlic and ginger. Cook for 1 minute or until fragrant. 5. Add the Chinese 5 Spice and Sichuan peppercorns. Cook for 1 minute.(Note: Sichuan peppercorns are a unique flavor. They cause a sort of numbness in the mouth which is normal. If you haven't worked with them before, start with a small amount. You can always add more as it cooks.) 6. Add your beer, tomato sauce, soy sauce, hoisin, and rice vinegar. Bring up to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 30-45 minutes or until chili has thickened. 7. Serve chili hot either by itself or over steamed white rice. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.

This was my favorite book of 2022! I just finished Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. Man, now I'm pissed off. Of course, this book should piss you off. It was quite good, although there was a vague romantic subplot that I felt was too much and should have been excised in the editing process.

Speaking as someone who used to work in a library, it is "the norm" for books to sit for at least a day after being checked in and before being reshelved. Shelving books actually takes a fair amount of time, so the carts usually only go out once they are full and it is usually done by volunteers and lower level library assistants, which means the labor available to reshelve is variable. Viruses/germies/ickies don't live that long on a surface, so as a patron you are fine getting books from the shelves. The "quarantine" period that many libraries instituted in 2020/2021 was to protect the Library staff who would be handling books before they were reshelved.

The only reason I can think of is that they had two actors that they wanted to cast. One played Gabri perfectly, but was physically closer to Olivier and vice versa to the other one? In the grand scheme of things, switching the two characters really doesn't change anything. It doesn't require any major changes from the original source material. All it does is serve as an annoyance for the viewers who have loved the books.

I just re-Read the article to check and it is kind of strange. There are vague references to “financial donations” and it does say that some angry fans and other authors have reported her for cyber crimes. However, for Meacham’s part, all it says is that she claims that she did not receive “substantial donations” and that she has given authorities access to her financial accounts. I am guessing that the fact that so little is said about it may mean that it is under investigation?
