Except when Michelle made those robocalls she wasn't dialing it back and this wasn't the early years of the show. This was the fall of 2014 and at the height of the show's popularity. She had to dial it back after she said a lot of hateful garbage and got negative publicity and backlash. Those robocalls demostrate a difference between the Duggars and for example the Gaineses, who don't say anything when they don't have nice to say.

Keep in mind Michelle made robo-calls using her own trademark voice to try to get a bathroom bill passed in her town in AR. This was before Joshgate, in between Jessa's wedding and Jill's wedding. People called for the show to be cancelled, and their fans rallied. This was the beginning of the bathroom fight. My memory is that she had to dial it back to keep the show, but I could be wrong. (Also not everyone in AR is like the Duggars, the Daily Show (still with JS at the time) did a segment about a bathroom bill and it featured people on both sides. ) In terms of Derick not having a choice, he knew the family had a reality show when he married in. Maybe he wanted to quit after Joshgate? Maybe they needed the money? But he could have gotten an accounting job. I always wonder what happened when JB and Michelle went down to CA after Israel's first birthday. Maybe Derick wanted out, and they told him he had to keep filming. I think Derick is mad at the Duggars or TLC for something very specific and very real, but he won't tell us what it is and keeps lashing out at innocent LGBTQ folks. He needs to leave the innocent people out, and just spill what happened or stop tweeting.

The Duggars (JB and Michelle, I think) shared this list before and I remember the text of 16 being on it. I'm sure they reconcile the contradiction for themselves, but technically #7 and #14 contradict each other. I don't like #12 either. As for #16, Jazz is a girl and seems to enjoy it.

Because between photos and videos, we see about 10-15 minutes of their lives per week. Beyond social media, it's hard to say what goes on.

That's not how I was taught to interpret that scripture. (I was taught to believe it means don't use your religion to brag.) And I disagree with the article. YMMV.

I'm not sure slapping Jill would do much other reinforce her views that the outside world is mean and unfair to her family.

I thought he was ousted, because women and girls accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior. That seems like a fine reason to oust Gothard. I believe these allegations. There are too many of them to be completely false. How is that a chink in the armor?

Since he attacked Nate?

Derick and Jill have had so many "scandals" it's hard to keep track. I think one of the main things they did before they were kicked off TLC was all that asking for the donations. People were mad celebrities asked for money to be missionaires and weren't sure where their money was going. Jill and Derick kept coming back to the States for one reason or another. It was hard to explain how that money went to central America. I think this all boils down to money. Derick expected them and/or his in-laws to either pay all the medical bills and help pay what insurance couldn't. He also expected to be making a lot as a tv star. Heck, he reached out to JB partly in the hopes of getting his career as missionary funded. I wonder if JB gave him anything before he arranged a marriage with Jill. If (and it's a big if) JB gave him money, it probably wasn't that much. That should have been your first clue, Derick. I think Derick sees that Jazz and her family and Nate and his family have a lot more money than he and his family and it angers him. He thinks they get it all from TLC and TLC pays them better than they did him. I know Nate and Jer have their own business and the Jennings probably have money from other sources. And then there's the fact the families are a lot smaller than the sprawling Duggar family so that increases the TLC money. Derick and Jill seem to have had money medical bills and need for money than the other kids. I wonder if that's why he's complaining the most. If one of the couples suddenly needed money (hopefully for nothing bad), maybe we would hear some of the other kidadults complaining. I can't see Jill and Derick getting a new show on Uptv. They're too controversial among reasons. Between Derick's rants and Jill's midwifery (which could potentially cause a law suit; unlikely but possible) why bother? There are plenty of cute kids in the world whose parents have it more together.

Hmm... that's a good point, although I know a lot of loud Catholics, who don't do quiet worship. I think a lot of what's going on is about ensuring your child turn exactly like you when they're adults. The Duggars, Bates, etc. are clearly an example of people trying to keep your kids in your image, but my fundie-lite friends do this too. If you're loud in the fold, then there's less a chance of you leaving. A kid who finds church a party is less likely to leave. An extrovert might blurt out their bad thoughts and give you a chance to correct them. A quiet kid might be hiding rebellious thoughts. Of course an aquaintance used to preach noise at a quiet kid, and that kid would nod and tell them what they wanted to hear.

The book also assumes that the woman is in control of who she dates. That's out not how they were raised. When a viewer asked how one might go about dating on an old 19 Kids & Counting, the girls said "Ask our dad. He knows what we like." The Duggar husbands had to ask JB for permission to go out, and fill out a 50-page questionaire. JD probably wasn't interested in Tabitha. I doubt Tabitha would have married the guy she did had she read the book.
-
Except the book goes against a lot of what she as a Duggar would believe. It assumes you go on dates. It tells women not to marry the first guy who's interested if he doesn't seem like a catch. It says singles should embrace their lives and not feel lesser to married people.

This sounds like Alyssa Bates 100% and maybe Erin to some extent. I think quite a few fundie moms with little kids or just a big family feel like that. In the Duggar world, I'm not sure tracking ovulation works. The point of the rhythm method is to obstain from sex when likely to get pregnant. That goes against being joyfully available 100% of the time. Of course if their husbands agree they aren't ready for another baby that could work. But not all of these men would care about preventing pregnancy if they wanted physical companionship.(After all it's kid to brag about and they don't have to be pregnant.) I completely agree with you about the rock and the hard place (pun not intended).
-
The main criticism of the book was that it was too hard on shy/introverted men. It was the one thing the less positive reviews mentioned they didn't like. Introverted and shy can be different, but for the purposes of the book it was the same. They gave an example don't trust a man who doesn't like to linger at a church and talk with people after the service. The Quiet: the Power of Introverts also has a section on religion. (Haven't read it, so I can't tell me about the book, except it's pro-Introverts.)

Those are good options if that's what Derick wants or he wants to not have more kids. I agree with you about Jill, although she seems to be doing well now. If he could find a church in the US in another state where Jill could find friends and feel safe, maybe moving away wouldn't be such a big deal. She also was dealing possibly with post-partum and the fallout of the Josh revelations. Now the dust is settled, she might have an easier time. The problem is they would need an income to make that work.

According to the reviews, it gives little to no advice to established married couples. It is strickly for women on to find and chose a husband. It would have no value to Derick/Jill. (Based on reviews). It's a pretty mainstream Christian text. It categorizes guys into types and then advises women whether this guy is right. The dating ideals are how my fundie-lite friends manage their love lives. You can go on a few dates, but you should sizing up him immediately as to whether he would be a good husband. No serious relationships that aren't headed toward marriage. A few types of guys you should avoid. (Including shy guys and control freaks.) Jinger is either reading it as part of a book club or to get ideas on to advise young women with their dating lives. As the pastor's wife, young women may turn to her for advice, especially since she is young and seems relatable. Since Jer's church is not IBLP, her families's dating/courtship style may be too formal and extreme for his church. It may give her ideas on how to relate to women pursuing a more normal style of dating. (No idea on pastor's wives myself, being heathen Catholic.) Jeremy's church did seem to include several youngish woman/girls who would be the target market for such a book. I have a similar book written by women from The Bachelor. It was fun to read. Jinger's book also looks like light, easy, and enjoyable (although I probably wouldn't read it). It's too mainstream for her parents, so good for her!

When they were doing, I think Bossy Rossy? Kameron remarked that she had to go bigger than she normally does to stay in the competition. I have hope for her that she realizes that.

I agree with your first sentence. A missionary will travel to other parts of the world and deal with other cultures and traditions. Be too judgmental and critical and most folks will reject you and your message. One reason we thought Derick would be different is willingness to eat food from other parts of the world. The Duggars eat with a very limited diet. Jill, I think, wanted to be like Michelle and JB and have a lot of kids. Maybe Derick thought they would have more time before the baby came, but Jill is not stupid, she wants babies. I think Jill would have a pretty similar life even if she had been raised fundie-lite or mainstream.

And one on his shirt! I find the picture of Jer and Jin so odd. If I had a photo like that, I wouldn't share it. What gets me the most is that it's not a quick selfie, they spent time setting it up. In some ways it looks she's posing with a cardboard cutout.

Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp
Temperance replied to frenchtoast's topic in Counting On
Genetics maybe? Ten pounds is a lot, but hardly the size of two non premature babies ime. Also too soon to tell about Gideon, but his cousin Israel was a big baby and he has stayed consistently big for his age and will probably be pretty tall as an adult. Some big babies become smaller or not as large for their age after they're born. A friend had that happen. She had a nine pound baby, and then like at a year old the doctors were worried her daughter was a little small for her age. My friend didn't gain that much weight either, so hard to tell (the mother kept track of her weightgain during pregnancy and tried to stay really fit.) The daughter is healthy. In some ways it wasn't a surprise, because a lot of the women in that family are on the shorter and smaller side for adult women. -
I got one of those Ancestry kits for Christmas and now I'm not sure I should use it. (It was a thoughtful gift from a close family member and I don't what to hurt feelings though.)

I actually wasn't sure which team was the worst, but the best was definitely Eureka/Monet/Kameron. I couldn't tell what the Vixen/Blair/Cracker wanted to say about wigs, which was actually their biggest problem imo. I don't think they needed a moderator. I think they needed to plan more content about wigs and divide it into three parts. Working with more of a structure either a moderator or a three-part structure would have worked.

" I came here with glitter and Jesus, and I'm making it work." I loved so many of the looks this week. They were great. Asia's costume was awesome. I also love My Fair Lady and Cracker's look. Eureka, Monet, and Kameron Michaels were great together. It helps that they really knew their subject matter. Question as a newbie on the music: Do they play different songs every season? Are there songs they repeat every season? Obviously they play songs by the judges if they're famous singers.
