I've been an insurance agent for 18 years and I can tell you the kids that participate in the costs of owning a car tend to take care of their cars and have lower "I'm a bonehead accidents". When parents ask what they can do to make sure their kids care about their cars I always say make them pay for at least part of it! I had a kid insured for a while that was like a mishmash of both of the flying truck kids. Of course his three serious accidents were not his fault. Including off-roading in a wash and almost killing a friend. According to mommy said accident was just kids out having fun how dare the other child's parents sue her for damages their son was only in the ICU for 8 days. My blood still boils over that one 14 years later.
