Miss Scarlet (PBS, return date TBA)
Stuart Martin, who played William “The Duke” Wellington for the first four seasons, will not be back for season 5 (precipitating the title change from Miss Scarlet & the Duke). To fill the void, Tom Durant Pritchard, whose TV credits include Feel Good and This Is Going to Hurt, has joined the PBS Masterpiece series as Alexander Blake, a handsome former soldier and respected detective inspector.

Season 5 Episodes
...
Episode 1: “The Rival” (Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 8/7c)
When a new Detective Inspector starts at Scotland Yard, Eliza must fight to prove herself all over again.

Episode 2: “The Guild” (Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 8/7c)
Eliza is tasked with solving the murder of a high-profile private detective with a closet full of skeletons.

Episode 3: “The Thames Reaper” (Sunday, January 26, 2025 at 8/7c)
With a notorious serial killer on the loose Eliza is caught in the middle of a clash between Fleet Street and Scotland Yard.

Episode 4: “The Deal” (Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 8/7c)
Eliza’s life is turned upside down when she finds herself dragged into a missing persons case with a recently released convict by the name of Patrick Nash.

Episode 5: “The Enchanted Mirror” (Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 8/7c)
Eliza explores the cut-throat world of Victorian theater while finding herself growing ever closer to Inspector Blake.

Episode 6: “Dangerous Liaisons” (Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 8/7c)
Eliza faces a conflict of interests when she’s hired to look into the personal life of Police Commissioner Fitzroy.
*  *  *
Kate Phillips (Eliza): “When it comes to Eliza’s independence, before William’s departure, she was always independent and knew what she wanted. So that hasn’t changed with his departure. I think what we do begin to see is a real softening in her.”

When it comes to newcomer Tom Durant Pritchard and his character Alexander Blake, Phillips added:  “Tom brings such a grounded, intelligent energy to Blake, but a real twinkle in his eye. So we know that there’s going to be a journey there with him and Eliza.”
*  *  *
Tom Durant Pritchard (Alexander Blake): “What can I let you know about this season? Let you into some little secrets? Well, you will firstly get to meet Alexander Blake and you will see a relationship of sorts with Eliza blossoming over the episodes, and I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.”

Cathy Belton (Ivy): “[Ivy’s] love of the independent career woman and her love of the woman that she was reared to be, [to] settle down and be happy and stay at home…those two things come to a really, really heartbreaking boil this season.”

Evan McCabe (Fitzroy): “Fitzroy will be overcoming a hardship that I think has been ailing him through a lot of previous seasons. I think we’re finally going to see him come to terms with it.”

Felix Scott (Nash): “We find Nash in a bit of a pickle in prison and licking his wounds. So I think he has a lot of his home comforts to keep him happy within the four walls.”

Paul Bazely (Clarence): “Clarence is a natural follower. He wants a strong leader. Mr. Nash was that leader and now I think he’s just transferred all his affections to Miss Scarlet. I think he’s devoted to her… What’s very exciting for Clarence this season is that he gets to leave the office, because I never had any scenes outside the office last year, and this year that means I get a coat and I get to wear my coat outside.”
*  *  *
MASTERPIECE: What 5 words would you use to describe Season 5?
[Executive Producer Patty] Ishimoto: Celebratory, Comic, Caperful, Compassionate, Conflict

MASTERPIECE: Can you share some teasers from Season 5?
Ishimoto: There’s a wedding. Eliza goes on a date. The British Secret Service gets involved. A grown man cries like a baby (but not who you’d suspect). The ever charming (imprisoned) Patrick Nash finds himself in quite a precarious predicament. Clarence gets a coat. Ivy finds her calling — and it’s not in the kitchen…

MASTERPIECE: What should fans know about Alexander Blake before they meet him in Season 5?
Ishimoto: In addition to being tall, dark, and handsome, he’s well-traveled, worldly, and refuses to work with private detectives. Plus, he has a surprising secret.
*  *  *
MASTERPIECE: Is there one particular scene you are excited for fans to see in the new season? (No spoilers, of course.)
Ishimoto: The wedding… and what unfolds after the wedding party.

Are We Entering an Era of Softer Period Drama Leading Men?
Amanda  Jan 2, 2025
https://fangirlish.com/2025/01/02/are-we-entering-an-era-of-softer-period-drama-leading-men/

Or take Alexander Blake, the new male lead on Miss Scarlet. I found myself more impressed by this new character than I ever expected! His predecessor, William (aka “the Duke”) was gruff and grumpy, with a soft side mostly just for longtime friend/love interest Eliza. Blake is a different story altogether. He’s reserved and cautious, with a penchant for long silences to get the answers he needs. But the show points out that his mistrust of Eliza has nothing to do with her being a woman; he’s just wary of PIs in general.

Blake also opens up a secretarial office staffed with highly competent women. It’s not a one-off, either: he trusts them with important work, acknowledges their value, and is savvy enough to notice when they’re overworking themselves. His respect for women he isn’t attracted to is part of his charm in the end.

From interview with MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson...

MASTERPIECE Studio’s 10-Year Anniversary
January 5, 2025
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/podcasts/masterpiece-studio/masterpiece-studios-10-year-anniversary/

Quote

Jace Lacob: Speaking of cast, Miss Scarlet and The Duke has undergone a transformation to Miss Scarlet after the departure of Stuart Martin’s William Wellington. We have a new love interest for Eliza Scarlet in the form of Tom Durant-Pritchard’s soldier-turned-detective Alexander Blake. What can you tell audiences about Tom and Alexander?

Susanne Simpson: In some ways, I don’t want to say anything because I want people to have their own reactions to it. And I will say that when Stuart left, of course, we were all very sad about that. He had been a great Duke. And as a writing team and part of the producing of the show, we were challenged by, do we recast the Duke? Do we bring in some new character? Do we go without a male counterpart for Scarlet for a year or whatever?

And I think ultimately what we decided was that there’s still a lot of story to tell about Scarlet because she is still finding her way and certainly comes up against a lot of obstacles. And some of them are personal, some of them have to do with other characters and certainly what path will she take in terms of her love life and work life is at the core of the show.

So I think we decided she needs that kind of counterpart in a character who may sometimes work with her and may work against her. And so we felt that we needed to bring in another inspector who she could spar with.
*  *  *
Susanne Simpson: I think Tom is terrific in the role. And I just hope that our audience feels the same way because many of them were really engaged with Stuart, and I know it was a big loss, but I hope they’re open to Scarlet moving on to other kinds of relationships.

Jace Lacob: And it is a different relationship, which I love. It’s not the same dynamic. It’s a totally different dynamic between the two of them, which is great.

Susanne Simpson: It is. And that’s all Rachael New and Ben, the writers, they are just very clever in how they create the characters for the show and the storylines and the obstacles to Scarlet. I love working with them. They’re a terrific team.

Jace Lacob: The elimination of the Duke from the title puts the emphasis squarely on Eliza Scarlet. It’s now just Miss Scarlet after all. Does that feel in keeping with the feminist underpinnings of the show? Does it make even more sense thematically that it would just be Miss Scarlet?

Susanne Simpson: I think she’s earned her own name for the show. I think Kate Phillips is just fabulous in the role. From the very moment I knew they had cast her, I thought it was brilliant casting for this role. And Kate just stuns me every year. She’s terrific.

Miss Scarlet’s Tom Durant-Pritchard Teases If Blake Will Romance Eliza After ‘Begrudgingly’ Teaming Up (Exclusive)
By Johnni Macke   January 11, 2025
https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/miss-scarlets-tom-durant-pritchard-teases-if-blake-will-romance-eliza/

Quote

“We all need love, do you know what I mean?” Durant-Pritchard, 37, exclusively told Us Weekly while playing coy as to whether his character, the new Scotland Yard Inspector Alexander Blake, will be a new love interest for private investigator Eliza (Kate Phillips).
*  *  *
“Blake doesn’t want any PIs working with Scotland Yard, but there’s that classic thing with Miss Scarlet is you can’t deny that she’s very good at her job,” he told Us. “And Blake is a sensible man and comes to appreciate the fact that as much as he doesn’t want Ms. Scarlet to get involved in any of the cases, she’s kind of too good to ignore.”

He teased, “So begrudgingly he has to allow her to take part.”
*  *  *
“He’s gone through his own heartbreak that is different to Miss Scarlet,” the season 5 star shared. “But they find each other at a time when they’re in their company. They need each other in a way.”

Durant-Pritchard noted that there’s a “reluctance” to Blake and Eliza “getting on” when he first comes to town but that changes as the seasons progresses.

“You see a sort of friendship building. There is something between them as much as they both don’t want it to happen,” he teased. “There’s a relationship building.”

Durant-Pritchard explained that even though Eliza wants to have a clean break from William — fans will see how the two formally part ways during the season 5 premiere — healing from heartbreak “is never that simple.”

The English actor revealed that Eliza’s feelings from season 4 will “feed into what happens in season 5.” When it comes to how she will connect with Blake and weasel her way into more cases, Durant-Pritchard said it will come down to proving herself at work.
*  *  *
“You can expect two, single people in a state of heartbreak, going about their business to the best of their ability,” he told Us. “And as much as they don’t want to spend time with one another as the season progresses, they end up having to spend more and more time together and get to know each other better and better as time goes on.”
*  *  *
As fans gear up for new dynamics in season 5 of Miss Scarlet, Durant-Pritchard gave Us his vision for season 6 — assuming Blake sticks around.

“I would like to see how his relationship with Ms. Scarlet progresses through time,” he said, hinting that he too is team Eliza finding love. “To see if they can maintain a kind of working relationship and then anything else that happens is a boon, I guess.”

Miss Scarlet season 5: Tom Durant-Pritchard introduces us to Alexander Blake (Exclusive)
By Alexandria Ingham   Jan 11, 2025
https://claireandjamie.com/miss-scarlet-season-5-tom-durant-pritchard-interview

Quote

We got to chat a little about Blake and the mystery behind him. There is a lot that he’s not sharing with people in his life, and we get to see some of that at the end of the Miss Scarlet season 5 premiere.

“I think there was something really nice in the old period drama style of that Mr. Darcy-style character, who doesn’t reveal a huge amount about themselves, keeps their private lives very private and goes about their business, so they’re quite hard to unpick, which means as an actor, you get to really delve under the skin and try and work out what makes him tick as a person…All the actors and characters are still trying to work out who this Blake character is throughout the whole series, which was quite fun to watch.”

It turns out that all scripts arrived at once, which meant that Durant-Pritchard had the backstory and could work with that. However, that didn’t stop him from filling in some of the gaps as not everything was written on the page.
*  *  *
When it came to describing Blake in three words, Durant-Pritchard chose courageous, brave, and honest. We’ll certainly get to see if he’s right as we delve into Miss Scarlet season 5 on PBS.

Podcast interview with writer and creator Rachael New (there's more than what I've quoted from the transcript below)...

Rachael New, Miss Scarlet Season 5 Episode 1
Released January 12, 2025
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/podcasts/masterpiece-studio/rachael-new-miss-scarlet-season-5-episode-1/

Quote

Jace Lacob: It’s lovely to have you back. We ended Series Four with the departure of William Wellington and Eliza seeing the new sign painted above her shop, “Miss Eliza Scarlet Private Detective”. She has her own shingle, but when we pick back up with Eliza in Series Five, things aren’t going swimmingly. How did you see that final image being the springboard for this new season?

Rachael New: Well, it’s funny, because that final image of her name above the door in my head was always going to be the very last episode. To me, that was her end point. But then it just felt like, do you know what, it could equally be the beginning of a completely new adventure. So, it just felt really fitting. And when you come to the end of a season, you have a rough idea of where you want your protagonists to go, but it often massively changes.

So, ending Season Four on that actually opened up lots of different doors and lots of different options. When you’re actually story lining, you can have a really set idea and then you just have to rip the whole thing up and start again. So, it’s always really good to not be too committed to one direction and to have a rough idea but be open to wherever the creative takes you.
*  *  *
Rachael New: It’s a bit of all those things. My feeling is that it’s about new beginnings for her, but she’s more vulnerable in this season, I think. She’s been a bit broken. We’ve seen her lose essentially, the love of her life. And then this amazing job opportunity came up and that kind of didn’t work out, which wasn’t her fault, in Season Four.

So, she’s really picked herself up, picked up the pieces of her life and is as determined as ever. But she’s almost sort of more streetwise now. She knows that life is tricky, it’s not perfect. And I think now she’s gone through running the Nash company and that didn’t work out, I think she’s just pleased to be back in her office in her world and just wants to keep her head above water. I think the time of taking over the world, for want of a better term, she’s sort of outgrown that a little bit.

Now she just wants to have some substance in her life. She’s trying to find her way in this new territory, especially now there’s a new detective inspector that she’s got to figure out and work out how to try and work with him. So, in some ways it’s quite good for her because this is slightly the Wild West for her now. She doesn’t have that support network at Scotland Yard. And she’s now really trying to figure out who she is and what she wants, where she wants to be. We definitely see a more mature Eliza in this season.

Jace Lacob: You mentioned Nash’s agency. It was ultimately a bit of a monkey’s paw. There was a curse attached to it and Eliza has really had to find her own way in the aftermath. But having said that, Eliza and Patrick’s friendship has been one of the most surprising and lovely elements of Miss Scarlet and this season they’re tested further. How would you describe their prison tête-à-têtes?

Rachael New: Oh, they’re just beautiful. I’ve probably said this to you so many times, Jace, about different aspects of this show, but those scenes are some of my favorite scenes. I love writing Nash anyway, he’s so funny. And he’s such a great antihero, I think. And just seeing him, it’s really nice that it’s not a romantic relationship, it’s a platonic friendship. They both care deeply for each other. And I love the idea that beyond anyone else, he knows he can rely on her and he really appreciates her as a friend. And she’s, come to rely on him as well, because she knows that he has got her back.
*  *  *
Jace Lacob: Those scenes, they have a tenderness but also a playfulness that I love. And I love the fact that he can read Eliza despite her steely exterior.
*  *  *
Jace Lacob: And then enter Detective Inspector Alexander Blake, who, according to Nash, is, “Hardworking, honest, all the worst things a man can be.” When you were initially conceiving the character of Blake, what sort of attributes were you looking for? How would he be a foil for Eliza without duplicating the Duke?

Rachael New: The main thing when Ben and I were trying to work out who he was, what came very quickly was obviously we wanted him to be different to Duke, but it was more than that. You know, the years have ticked on a bit. We wanted the audience to get a sense that even though obviously, these would not be hugely progressive men, we are in a later year, we’re in, like, 1885 now and I loved the idea that this man that’s come in, it’s not so much about her, which is a bit like Nash, it’s not about her being a female private detective. He couldn’t care less about that. It’s just about her being a private detective. He just can’t stand them. He doesn’t trust them. He doesn’t use them. And I just thought that was a really nice fresh take.

It’s not really about her being a woman. And with Duke, it was always slightly that. Obviously, they were childhood friends and they had a history and he had deep feelings for her, but there was always that sort of protection, and it was about her being a woman and he was very traditional as a man, Duke. He wanted to get married and have children like most men would want at that time, whereas Blake is different.

He’s already got his child, his family, we find out at the end of the episode that he’s got a daughter. So, he’s a very different, I’m going to use the word beast, but not in any derogatory way, he’s a very different force for her. And she’s got to really try and figure him out and figure out the best way to manage him. Because that’s what Eliza does best. She works out how to manage someone, even if it’s like Mr. Potts or Mrs. Parker, that’s her key. She sort of maps out how to navigate the person in front of her.
*  *  *
Jace Lacob: And it’s great. I wondered whether we’d get an overt mention to William’s fate here, particularly in the first episode back after Stuart Martin’s departure. What sort of mental calculus did you have to do about discussing whether Wellington might be back?

Rachael New: Again, like I said earlier, it was one of those things where, especially with the first episode of a new season, you don’t want everything to be dominated by the news that he’s not coming back, which it would’ve been so easy to do that. Nobody wants to see Eliza heartbroken and miserable for an entire episode, which is why, again, when we were structuring this episode, Ben and I were pretty certain that the flashback structure was probably the way to go because you want to see that she’s heartbroken. You want to see that emotion. Often, she can be a bit buttoned down sometimes and it’s not often you see her in the raw so much. And it’s a beautiful scene of her and Ivy, and Ivy comforting her.

Interview: Miss Scarlet’s Tom Durant-Pritchard
Jan 23, 2025

Quote

Masterpiece:
On the topic of period dramas, you were in My Lady Jane, [set in the] 16th century, MASTERPIECE’s Tom Jones, which was 18th century, and now Miss Scarlet which is 19th century…a bunch of different eras! What is your favorite time period you’ve performed?

Tom Durant-Pritchard:
It’s a hard one. So much of it depends on the story, but you can’t beat putting on a good period costume. There’s that thing in period dramas where it’s more often the thing that isn’t said, especially when it comes to Victorian period drama, there’s that kind of Mr. Darcy approach to talking and dealing with emotions that I just love playing. And there’s something so quintessentially English, I think, about not being able to fully express your emotions that I really enjoy playing, because you know what’s happening underneath. But I don’t know, favorite time period? Victorian era is doing pretty well for me at the moment and I’m definitely enjoying it.

'Miss Scarlet' Season 5 Finds More Stable Ground in "The Thames Reaper"
By Lacy Baugher   Jan 26, 2025
https://tellyvisions.org/article/miss-scarlet-season-5-episode-3-recap-thames-reaper

Quote

Miss Scarlet Season 5 reaches the halfway point with the "The Thames Reaper," an hour that's far and away the best installment of this revamped new era of the show. The episode is well-balanced regarding characters and plots, and the case of the week is fascinating for once. Sure, after this season's first two episodes, the bar was pretty low, and the mystery sputters to an evident and less-than-satisfying ending, but as such things go, it's an improvement, and we should take it.
*  *  *
Part of the problem with this season* is that it's so determined to force Eliza and Blake into a partnership that mirrors her old relationship with William that it hasn't given their bond any time to grow organically into its own thing. It's unlikely any viewers want this to be Eliza's relationship with William, just with the serial numbers scraped off, so what's the harm in leaning into the ways it isn't?
*  *  *
We just spent an entire episode about how Blake is such a stickler about not working with private investigators that the guild tried to falsely #MeToo him over it. Shouldn't we spend some time on why he seems willing to break his by-the-rule ethics for Eliza constantly?
