Miss Scarlet (PBS, return date TBA)
Stuart Martin, who played William “The Duke” Wellington for the first four seasons, will not be back for season 5 (precipitating the title change from Miss Scarlet & the Duke). To fill the void, Tom Durant Pritchard, whose TV credits include Feel Good and This Is Going to Hurt, has joined the PBS Masterpiece series as Alexander Blake, a handsome former soldier and respected detective inspector.

Episode 3: “The Thames Reaper” (Sunday, January 26, 2025 at 8/7c)

Episode 4: “The Deal” (Sunday, February 2, 2025 at 8/7c)

Episode 5: “The Enchanted Mirror” (Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 8/7c)
Eliza explores the cut-throat world of Victorian theater while finding herself growing ever closer to Inspector Blake.

Episode 6: “Dangerous Liaisons” (Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 8/7c)
Eliza faces a conflict of interests when she’s hired to look into the personal life of Police Commissioner Fitzroy.
*  *  *
Kate Phillips (Eliza): “When it comes to Eliza’s independence, before William’s departure, she was always independent and knew what she wanted. So that hasn’t changed with his departure. I think what we do begin to see is a real softening in her.”

When it comes to newcomer Tom Durant Pritchard and his character Alexander Blake, Phillips added:  “Tom brings such a grounded, intelligent energy to Blake, but a real twinkle in his eye. So we know that there’s going to be a journey there with him and Eliza.”
*  *  *
Tom Durant Pritchard (Alexander Blake): “What can I let you know about this season? Let you into some little secrets? Well, you will firstly get to meet Alexander Blake and you will see a relationship of sorts with Eliza blossoming over the episodes, and I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.”

Cathy Belton (Ivy): “[Ivy’s] love of the independent career woman and her love of the woman that she was reared to be, [to] settle down and be happy and stay at home…those two things come to a really, really heartbreaking boil this season.”

Evan McCabe (Fitzroy): “Fitzroy will be overcoming a hardship that I think has been ailing him through a lot of previous seasons. I think we’re finally going to see him come to terms with it.”

Felix Scott (Nash): “We find Nash in a bit of a pickle in prison and licking his wounds. So I think he has a lot of his home comforts to keep him happy within the four walls.”

Paul Bazely (Clarence): “Clarence is a natural follower. He wants a strong leader. Mr. Nash was that leader and now I think he’s just transferred all his affections to Miss Scarlet. I think he’s devoted to her… What’s very exciting for Clarence this season is that he gets to leave the office, because I never had any scenes outside the office last year, and this year that means I get a coat and I get to wear my coat outside.”
*  *  *
MASTERPIECE: What 5 words would you use to describe Season 5?
[Executive Producer Patty] Ishimoto: Celebratory, Comic, Caperful, Compassionate, Conflict

MASTERPIECE: Can you share some teasers from Season 5?
Ishimoto: There’s a wedding. Eliza goes on a date. The British Secret Service gets involved. A grown man cries like a baby (but not who you’d suspect). The ever charming (imprisoned) Patrick Nash finds himself in quite a precarious predicament. Clarence gets a coat. Ivy finds her calling — and it’s not in the kitchen…

MASTERPIECE: What should fans know about Alexander Blake before they meet him in Season 5?
Ishimoto: In addition to being tall, dark, and handsome, he’s well-traveled, worldly, and refuses to work with private detectives. Plus, he has a surprising secret.
*  *  *
MASTERPIECE: Is there one particular scene you are excited for fans to see in the new season? (No spoilers, of course.)
Ishimoto: The wedding… and what unfolds after the wedding party.

Are We Entering an Era of Softer Period Drama Leading Men?

Or take Alexander Blake, the new male lead on Miss Scarlet. I found myself more impressed by this new character than I ever expected! His predecessor, William (aka “the Duke”) was gruff and grumpy, with a soft side mostly just for longtime friend/love interest Eliza. Blake is a different story altogether. He’s reserved and cautious, with a penchant for long silences to get the answers he needs. But the show points out that his mistrust of Eliza has nothing to do with her being a woman; he’s just wary of PIs in general.

Blake also opens up a secretarial office staffed with highly competent women. It’s not a one-off, either: he trusts them with important work, acknowledges their value, and is savvy enough to notice when they’re overworking themselves. His respect for women he isn’t attracted to is part of his charm in the end.

From interview with MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson...

MASTERPIECE Studio’s 10-Year Anniversary
January 5, 2025

Jace Lacob: Speaking of cast, Miss Scarlet and The Duke has undergone a transformation to Miss Scarlet after the departure of Stuart Martin’s William Wellington. We have a new love interest for Eliza Scarlet in the form of Tom Durant-Pritchard’s soldier-turned-detective Alexander Blake. What can you tell audiences about Tom and Alexander?

Susanne Simpson: In some ways, I don’t want to say anything because I want people to have their own reactions to it. And I will say that when Stuart left, of course, we were all very sad about that. He had been a great Duke. And as a writing team and part of the producing of the show, we were challenged by, do we recast the Duke? Do we bring in some new character? Do we go without a male counterpart for Scarlet for a year or whatever?

And I think ultimately what we decided was that there’s still a lot of story to tell about Scarlet because she is still finding her way and certainly comes up against a lot of obstacles. And some of them are personal, some of them have to do with other characters and certainly what path will she take in terms of her love life and work life is at the core of the show.

So I think we decided she needs that kind of counterpart in a character who may sometimes work with her and may work against her. And so we felt that we needed to bring in another inspector who she could spar with.
*  *  *
Susanne Simpson: I think Tom is terrific in the role. And I just hope that our audience feels the same way because many of them were really engaged with Stuart, and I know it was a big loss, but I hope they’re open to Scarlet moving on to other kinds of relationships.

Jace Lacob: And it is a different relationship, which I love. It’s not the same dynamic. It’s a totally different dynamic between the two of them, which is great.

Susanne Simpson: It is. And that’s all Rachael New and Ben, the writers, they are just very clever in how they create the characters for the show and the storylines and the obstacles to Scarlet. I love working with them. They’re a terrific team.

Jace Lacob: The elimination of the Duke from the title puts the emphasis squarely on Eliza Scarlet. It’s now just Miss Scarlet after all. Does that feel in keeping with the feminist underpinnings of the show? Does it make even more sense thematically that it would just be Miss Scarlet?

Susanne Simpson: I think she’s earned her own name for the show. I think Kate Phillips is just fabulous in the role. From the very moment I knew they had cast her, I thought it was brilliant casting for this role. And Kate just stuns me every year. She’s terrific.
