I enjoy that writer's one-shots and was looking forward to her multi-chapter fic. I read the prologue and was hoping it wasn't going in that direction. Couldn't make it thru the first chapter. I don't understand the appeal in making Felicity an abuse victim. Terrible flashbacks to that awful After Hours. SMH

I try not to read WIPs, but I caved and read the time travel with a kid fic and now I hate you all because I'm going to be climbing the walls waiting for updates *sigh* I adore Ellie. She's precocious but not too precocious. I love the info nuggets she drops ("Is that like Queen Inc.?"). It's an interesting time in Oliver/Felicity's relationship when UST was at its peak. The authors seem to be having a lot of fun with this.

Mwahaha. Welcome to the dark side.

There's a new abuse/rape-fic (it's appropriately marked). Set in S2, Felicity's been with an abusive boyfriend for a year. IMO 100% out of character. Not only that Felicity would stay with an abusive guy for a year, but also that in the first few paragraphs of the first chapter Oliver sees a handprint bruise on her arm and he just sends her home with some magic herb cream. Cause yeah, he'd do that.

I saw the tags on that one and decided not to read it. As for the situation with the boyfriend, I find it difficult to judge whether it's in character or not because real people who you would never expect find themselves (sadly) in these situations. I actually wonder how the relationship co-exist with her working with Oliver and Dig. I presume she's on the team if it's S2.

@10Eleven12, After Hours?

I'm not only saying she's OOC bc she stayed with an abusive guy, but because overall she's super meek about the whole thing. I don't remember Felicity ever being meek in the show.

I would tell you to look up After Hours on AO3, but don't.

My problem is domestic violence is such a serious issue that I have problems with it being used as means to sell drama/angst or as means for a romantic set-up.

I've never been a target of it, but I've driven down in the middle of the night to pick up my sister because her boyfriend pulled a knife on her or put her head into a wall. There is nothing there that should ever be romanticized and I'm sorry but setting up a horrific abuse situation so Oliver can come in and cuddle is romanticizing it.

That went a little rant-y and personal. Sorry. Oh and my sister is totally out of that situation right now.

Okay. As I said, I haven't read it since it didn't seem like my cup of tea, so I misconstrued what you were saying.

I wasn't sufficiently clear. Everything about Felicity is OOC AND Oliver is OOC as well, bc no way would he just send her home with some cream after finding a handprint bruise on her arm. I skimmed Chapter 2 and it just gets worse and more OOC.

I read that earlier today and it's standard Macha. Meaning very much in character and a touching exploration of their actions and reactions. She gets me with small things. Like say Lyla, who only shows up on the phone but is so perfectly Lyla and on top of everything.

She's totally one of my favorite writers, but it drove me nuts that her Diggle actually STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT while driving the not-breathing Felicity to the hospital:

“If you’re not sure, start CPR. Keep pressure on the wound if you can.” A glance in the rearview mirror shows just a portion of Oliver’s face as he leans over her. “You’ve got this, Oliver.”

The hospital is two blocks away, and Dig curses mightily at the red light in their path. “C’mon, c’mon,” he mutters, his fingers gripping the steering wheel with every last bit of his fear and frustration.

Green. Go.

I was interested in the description at first - though chapter 1 wasn't particularly engrossing. Then chapter 2 came along, and oy vey. Not only are we asked to believe that Felicity was in an abusive relationship with a high-maintenance type all throughout season 2 (when? when did she find the time?), but I realised early into the chapter that it's what I call YABF - yet another baby fic. So, so tired, of them. I don't know what the obsession is with making Felicity pregnant all the time. It's annoying enough when Felicity is a victim all the time (though I can't really throw stones, living in a glass house, lol) - now she's a victim and pregnant. Ugh.

It reminded me of one of Joanna Russ's famous rants, in which she called a lot of science fiction written by men "the weird-ways-of-getting-pregnant-story" - the only adventures women can have are internal adventures.

Holy shit that bugged me too!!

I mean, I've seen so many tv shows and movies where someone is injured and the driver just blows through a million red lights to get to emergency before they die - sure, they arrive leading a carcade of cop cars, but hey, the injured person is alive, and in the world of the movies and tv, the cops understand (also, this is a mayoral candidate and his fiance, i mean, seriously?

Just, idk.

I think that is the first thing that has ever stuck out to me as "No, that would not happen" in a Macha fic. It's also late at night, there's no indication of traffic...but Digg's sitting there unmoving at a red light, two blocks from the hospital, with Felicity actively bleeding to death in the backseat? No. Even a non-Diggle driver would proceed through against the red light in a safe manner, watching for any oncoming traffic. (I'm also like 99.9% sure that would be legal basically everywhere.)

Your fics don't make her into a victim. In your fics some bad stuff happens to her, but she deals with it and works to solve whatever it is. She doesn't just hang out in the bad situation for a year. And act super meek about it all.

I agree about Digg - though maybe he's in shock? I'm just clutching at straws here because I love Macha's work, and this fic is great - I just don't understand why there had to be that bit, especially as he noticed, as soon as he got there, that she had blood in her mouth, which is movie/tv shorthand for SHIT JUST GOT REAL!

And thank you for what you said about "my" Felicity - bad shit is gonna keep happening (sorry girl!) but she'll never be meek.

Have you read the new normal, the latest rosietwiggs? Whew! It is hot, like fire! Though if it morphs into a babyfic I'm out.

Regularly posting a new chapter each week is actually wonderfully quick and prolific and yet I'm greedy and want it all RIGHT NOW!

To pass the time, I read So Caffeinated's earlier story, "Actions Speak Louder than Words" Chances are it's had a recommendation here before but in case not, It's an AU set in early season three where THE date happened, but Oliver never lost his company and Lyla is still pregnant and Sara is alive and Thea is still in "Europe". Oliver is still certain they can't be together, but after a very pleasant kidnapping, when the GA comes to "rescue" Felicity, someone happens to catch proof that Felicity knows the GA and sells the pictures to all the media outlets.

It's a fantastic read and the character's voices and behavior is always spot on. Only 16 chapters long. http://archiveofourown.org/works/3373358/chapters/7378355

That entire series is amazing! I recommend it all. It's why despite the fictional kid I knew that she would handle the characters well which is all I want in fan fiction. Plots can be wanky. AUs can be unrealistic. But I value the characters being handled properly and with respect.

My only frustration beyond this waiting, is that it is keeping So-Caffeniated & Bre from finishing their other stories. I'm still waiting for So-Caffienated's Part 4 of this universe and Bre's Blood Hands.

Bre definitely takes a long time to update her fics, like Blood Hands, but I feel like every chapter is worth the wait. She tends to be a perfectionist and writes a chapter, then goes back to overhaul that chapter to make it better. I appreciate her effort. Not to mention she has 3 fics going on at the same time :p

As for So-Caffeinated, she has plans to finish that universe by November. Her main focus right now is her Firefly AU and her fic with Bre.

I'm usually wary of kidfic as well, but So-Caffeinated does a great job writing Connor in "No Way Out But Through", so I didn't have any reservations about the new fic.

They both have a bunch of WIPs that I'd love to see more of-- Bre's lawyer series and So-Caffeinated's Firefly 'verse--but I'm just happy with anything they decide to post. I feel spoiled because they're two of the more prolific writers in the fandom.

Good to hear about your sister getting out.

Well, now I just have to look for After Hours just to read the description and the tags.

I read this fic for a long time even though it pushed past my normal boundaries. I mean, in this story Felicity is not only a sex worker, but into bondage and Master/Mistress stuff (I hate the Master or Sir thing so bad) and even in the first chapter, she gets attacked but the author shut that down fast so I thought that was going to be the low point of the story. At first, there was a kind of fascination for the WTH and it is well written in the technical sense.

I kept reading it past the first chapters because I found the take on Oliver and Sara's relationship and her PTSD really interesting and I wanted to know how Felicity got to this place and I also really wanted to see Felicity happier and more in control than when she was first introduced which is where the story seemed to be going. The first half remained interesting even though the characters often were going by the character names only. There was stuff that bugged me, but I was invested and so kept reading, even after Sara went nuts on Felicity- really scary stuff (I kept thinking "and now someone stops her" but nope!)

Still, I thought the story was wrapping up and normalizing the relationships and there was a mystery that needed solving but the more it was explained how and why Felicity was in the business, the less I could buy into the premise and while waiting for new chapters, I drifted away. Then I found out that instead of wrapping up the story, every awful, terrible, disturbing thing Felicity had already gone through was NOTHING compared to the torture porn that was coming and I've been so grateful for that warning.

Because it is well written, a reader risks not being able to stop (since usually once I start a story, I NEED to finish it) so just don't start.

I felt the same way, esp because of how she handles kids in her other works.

But sometimes kids plots in general don't interest me unless they can actually be part of the action. And not just part of the drama. And when you mix it with time travel it can go very wrong very quickly, but I feel like these writers have enough skill to not let us down.

Another positive spoiler-esque tidbit... is Bre has told me that Moira plays a big part in their story, especially if it becomes obvious that something is up.

Just finished reading it and I actually don't think he did stop at the red. I think he keeps going toward the light and by the time he gets to it, it is back to green. Earlier in the story he is speeding up, looking down the road at the distant stop light daring it to turn yellow and then he's cursing when it goes red and feeling frustrated but no indication that he actually stopped. The story says it is "in their path". I think he was merely anticipating trouble at the intersection but then the light turns green and it's just go, go, go with no obstacles. There's no way he actually stopped and no indication he ever slowed down. I think it was just unclearly written.

I hope he at least slowed down. I kept imagining his car being sideswiped by someone crossing on their green.

I had more problems with him telling Oliver to start CPR while putting pressure on Felicity's wound. How would one even do that?

Lyla is just pure gold in that fic. The EPs acknowledge that they lucked out with EBR's Felicity but I think they did too with AMA's Lyla who was never supposed to be such a big part of the show.

Bre said they are posting a new snippet tonight - presumably on their respective Tumblrs. I am more excited about that than I am next week's episode.

Do you have a link? I'm not on Tumblr.

I couldn't buy the premise that Felicity needed to be a sex worker to pay off her university expenses (the amount someone with Felicity's expertise would make in IT makes what she would earn as a sex worker petty) and I almost gave up when Sara went bonkers and skipped ahead to find out why. (Absurd explanation) But when it got to rape porn I had to do a mind scrub and gave up. That kind of thing happens in real life, such as to women who get taken by militia groups, but I have no interest in reading about that happening anyone much less imagining it happening to characters I like. Especially when there is no insight in the writing. Edited by statsgirl

I agree with everyone about After Hours. Don't even bother. It's gross and incredibly OOC. And I'm usually not bothered about the kind of fic out there because people should write what they want and everyone has the option to just stop reading if it's not to their tastes but no. That fic went too far. It was like the author just enjoyed putting Felicity through shit for the sake of it.

I'm also not a fan of baby fics but I'm loving Forever is Composed of Nows. It's a great twist on Olicity having a kid, and really well written. I hate the week wait for updates!

I will read anything MachaSWicket has written because I automatically know it's gonna be awesome, and strangely enough Lyla is always the most in-character out of all of them. I can always picture her so clearly. Love it. I hope she writes another multi chapter fic soon.

Since I feel like I started the discussion about After Hours, I guess I should point out that I don't actually plan to read it. I read the description and the tags and it's not for me. The author is free to write whatever they please, I just have things about the characters that I'm really fixed on. One of them is actually Oliver and Felicity having a relationship that starts with sex. Because I feel that what they went with on the show, both of them professing their love for each other before sleeping together is something that sets them apart in today's landscape. (Coincidentally, that's why I haven't read Bre's lawyer series mentioned here even though I believe people when they say it's well written.) Others are Felicity not getting ahead with her giant brain or Sara turning on women. I can buy Sara going bananas, but her not turning on other women is once again a very distinguishing character feature for me.

The sum of it all is I'll at least take a look at some AUs, but if they don't pick up the character nuances that make these people stand out in MY mind, I'll just skip the work.

This so much. And I disliked Ray Palmer a lot, but making him into a moustache-twirling villain was just ridiculous. Both he and Cooper were unrecognizable in this, and it just turned into a parody.

The CPR . . . yeah. I was wincing through that scene. I did a First Aid course (with St John's Ambulance) a few years ago, and I'd actually asked the lady giving it whether one would do CPR with a bleeding wound - her response was no (actually it was "are you crazy? Hell no!", but we tend to over dramatize in my country, lol).

And the university expenses to justify sex worker - I mean, why? The show was very careful in their choice of university for Felicity, as MIT has a means based scholarship programme. I had to add other expenses to justify her working for the Irish Mob, and even then the work she did was hacking, not sex work.

I really don't want Conklin actually to do anything to her while Oliver's with JC. Peril, yes, actual other stuff, please no!

Oh no, don't worry - I actually meant in future stories. Felicity is done taking it in Lost in Purgatory.

There's actually a new story up which is worse than After Hours, and I've been skimming it with a sort of horrified fascination - it's so absurd, but I can't look away. The premise is that Oliver is abducted into sex slavery after Lian Yu, which . . . dude. Before Lian Yu, maybe. After, ehh. He's a grown man on the wrong side of 25 with a fuckload of scars. The writing is exceptionally awful - all the villains speak like a cross between Mr Spock and that episode of Futurama where they parodied anime (last third of Reincarnation). And the writer has openly said that the same thing is going to happen to Felicity, which will inspire Oliver to become GA to save her, and NO! DAMMIT! That's precisely the kind of abuse story I hate, in which a woman is fridged so that the male hero gets his head out his ass.

Generally sex workers do not make a lot of money at all, so I can't imagine anyone picking up that job to pay university bills. It's just unrealistic. Plus with everything else people are saying about that After Hours it just seems like a poorly written story from a character perspective so I will never probably read it. I think I might have read the first chapter and put a hard stop on ever reading more.

FS getting tangled up in the mob to pay off her university bills has never bothered me when it has been used. Even if it is more realistic that she would just get a scholarship program in MIT. I can see how she might accidentally or naively offer her computer skills as a means to make more money to pay her expenses. It's not as realistic, but it's logical. A 18-21y old who is learning and expanding all of her computer knowledge may like the challenge that it offers, just like FS in the show joined the Hacktavist groups, especially if the people she is doing it for are not explicit about what she is actually doing. Plus the few stories that I have read her doing this often place the mob connections in her childhood or in Vegas via her Mother's work, so it's not like she goes out of her way to find a way to work for the mob. It easy to see how it started off small and then she was in too deep.

I almost wish AO3 had a way you could bookmark stories you've finished or decided not to read/finish. It wouldn't have to be public because I would not want to hurt the writer's feelings, because to each their own, and sadly almost all stories have an audience somewhere. But there has to be a better way to organize your dashboard so that you can sort out which stories you've read and which ones you've passed on. I've asked them for something similar and they directed me to use my History, which is far too cumbersome.

What is the title or link to the Bre Lawyer series?

Somehow I doubt they overthought which school she went to, 1) there are very few options to chose from, however 2) MIT would probably still be the more well known school (not only in the US but in the world!) for being one of - if not THE- best school for anything computer science related.

I agree about them not overthinking it and going to something that is very well known but they lucked out because MIT has a 5 year joint Bachelor/Master's program in computer science, which Felicity may have been able to finish in even less time.

In no universe would Felicity have needed not only to do sex work to pay for MIT, but to CONTINUE to need to do sex work to pay for MIT for several years after graduating. She was there for like three years. Boston is relatively expensive, but it's not insane. I lived there for law school. My crappy apartment was like $800/month. So, even with ZERO scholarships, say $30k/year for tuition and add in living expenses. Worst case she'd be in about $150k. In After Hours there are a couple nights she takes in $25k/-$50k. In a night. So she's paid off everything in a couple weeks, at most a couple months, in the fic. There's no way she'd still be doing it to pay off college loans years later.

The gang rape late in the fic is absolutely awful, and stupid, and horrifying. But then, it gets EVEN WORSE when she ends up with infections and internal injuries and just geez. Then, and I'd spoiler tag this if I gave enough of a crap, she ends up leaving Oliver anyway. What the hell was all this for?

Like everything in that story, as it went on, the "truth" behind her career got worse.  First off, she didn't start up in the biz because of school expenses.  One month she and Donna needed rent money so Felicity went out and turned a trick (secretly) and then when Cooper needed bail money she did it again and then told him about it and he dumps her. My memory is a bit fuzzy but then she goes out and hires a lawyer and racks up huge legal bills.  I don’t remember why though, but I do remember thinking that it was unnecessary in the first place.  It was finding out the completely out of character reveal that Felicity thought of hooking as a kind of pay day loan that had me just backing away.  That isn’t Felicity.  She’s more likely to do a nefarious bank transfer than sell her body for quick cash. Plus Donna would have died before she let her baby girl do that.

Here is another fic where Felicity has been tortured... Imo I'm NOT a fan of fics where Felicity is being tortured, but I gave this author (ckksac) a chance because I LOVED how she portrayed Felicity (as the biggest badass ever) in her previous fic (In the Company of Shadows). And I have to say, I'm enjoying it. I think the characterization is pretty good, and she's good at showing that Felicity's sense of self/her spirit hasn't been taken away. I'm going to give the fic a chance!

And I have to say, I'm enjoying it. I think the characterization is pretty good, and she's good at showing that Felicity's sense of self/her spirit hasn't been taken away. I'm going to give the fic a chance!

It may still not be my thing but I think there's a big difference in stories that start with bad things right away and then the story happens than stories that lead to and too often revel in causing pain.

That's definitely how I feel. I also think that the author didn't use this trope as a way to cause Olicity angst, it genuinely looks like the author will TRY to give Felicity a voice and how this event affects her. I'm remaining optimistic.

Tell me what you think if you read it :)

Well, I did end up reading it and it doesn't sound like her torture included sexual abuse which is what was still putting me off.  There was a vague line about how they tried to avoid leaving marks but that "sometimes the guards were over eager" when they returned her to her cell - so I won' t completely rule out that nothing like that happened but the author is clearly not being gratuitous.  I bookmarked it for future updates.

I like AU's that retell how Felicity joined in the cause with Oliver.  This one has bonus points for Lyla and Diggle being married and Moira being alive.

Not gonna lie, this makes the fic sound really appealing.

In the Company of Shadows was a very interesting effort, but I felt the last chapter didn't have the impact of those leading up to it.

I think she gave up on the last chapter. Her muse left her and she just about admitted to finishing it to finish it in the author's notes. It's really disappointing because I really liked the story and then it just ended with a dud chapter. It was a let down. But it's becoming common even in mainstream literature for really great stories to just end with duds because authors are rushed or perhaps distracted by other projects.

That's true - Stephen King is kind of famous for messing up the endings to his stories. And I know my reaction to the last part of Mockingjay (the novel) was that if I'd been reading an actual paper book it would have gone flying across the room (it was on my laptop, so I just pressed delete, heh).

Endings are hard, though. Especially if what made you write the story in the first place was a specific scene which came to mind, and which came towards the beginning of your story. Also, the longer your story gets, the harder it's going to be to write an ending which satisfies everyone.

I remember when I was still reading Harry Potter fanfic, there was a really good story on ffn, though it was about forty chapters in, and still unfinished. Then, at about the forty chapter mark, the author announced she was going to write a prequel to that story before going back to it. When the prequel was about 90 chapters in, and showed no signs of finishing, I gave up.

Umm... there is like almost no character development or plot or anything except SMUT in this little collection of Bre's. I'll keep up with the postings because I think she might take it somewhere. As of right now it is all over the place and the out of timeline order is really off-putting. That being said hot damn... some of the smut is whoa... not exactly fit for work, which is where I started the story. I promptly had to stop reading it & save it for a less public place to hide my blushing and not be around so many highlighters & supply closets.

I'm not a big fan of the Hate each other first trope for Oliver/Felicity in fanfics. They tend to have to make Oliver (or Felicity) an asshole & OOC or Felicity (or Oliver) dumber to keep up whatever misunderstanding is occurring, and as it goes on they get into that frustrating territory, for me, where simple conversation would have resolved everything.

Bre's Lawyer series is skirting to edge, for me, but it is well written, so I will stick without for now.

One smutty Oliver/Felicity fic I am enjoying is Adrenaline  by LEYTON-NALEY  Feliccity is an independent Hacktavist vigilante when Oliver comes back from Lain Yu, and they become aware of each other. Meant to be sort of Catwoman/Batman push-pull relationship.
