Whimsy February 8, 2018 Share February 8, 2018 Jacob Derwin (Malolo Tribe) Age: 22 Hometown: Merrick, New York Current residence: Brooklyn, New York Occupation: Music Teacher Three words to describe you: Self-deprecating, charming, and affable—though others would say "punchable." Why do you think you'll "survive" Survivor? This sounds stupid, but I'm really easy to talk to. I want to set up my situation so everyone knows they can come to me to chat and get support despite any problems they're having personally or socially in the game. I'm a teddy bear, y'know? On top of that, I'm not a weakling. I can haul firewood and follow instructions when it comes to building shelters. I know how to make fire and untie knots and all that.Jacob Derwin's Full Bio Link to comment
LadyChatts February 9, 2018 Share February 9, 2018 On the fence with him. I kind of like him, but I also can see where he might be playing it up too hard to be the designated awkward fish out of water. Link to comment

LadyChatts March 1, 2018 Share March 1, 2018 I really was kind of surprised he was voted off. Not sorry to see him go, and we’ve had obvious votes before, but his vote off seemed almost too obvious. I guess if they ever do Ghost Island 2.0 they will have a section that simply says “don’t play like Jacob.” 3 Link to comment
Bryce Lynch March 2, 2018 Share March 2, 2018 He is only 22? I would have guessed 35 and living in his parents' basement. His emotional age seems to be about 15, but he looks much older than 22 He came across a lot better in his exit interview than on the show. I got the sense he realized he was in over his head and was flailing to try to stay in the game 3 Link to comment
ByaNose March 2, 2018 Share March 2, 2018 (edited) I guess I hadn't read his bio but I'm shocked that he's only 22. I thought he was 28-29 years old. He comes off so much older. I guess the big deal is Michael being only 18 and playing 23. Whereas Jacob really is that age but I thought he was much older. Edited March 2, 2018 by ByaNose 2 Link to comment

Guest March 2, 2018 Share March 2, 2018 I wasn't sad to see him go because his shtick was wearing on me. But I also feel kind of sorry for people because if they don't play hard, we don't like them, but if they play too hard (like he and Steph G. did), we also don't like them. Or if they're too much of a character or not enough of one, same thing. Jacob was also too much of a character. I generally like the nerdy, self-deprecating guys but his felt forced. Link to comment
marys1000 March 3, 2018 Share March 3, 2018 The first couple of boots are so sort of bad luck random. You hardly know anyone but they have to send someone home so its always for very shallow reasons. In a different tribe, say of older less pretty people, or a few more people with quirks, he may have lasted a few more votes at least. Or say if he had been on a tribe that didn't go to the first few tribal councils and it gave him some time to make alliances. Goes for all first second boots. 1 Link to comment

LadyChatts March 24, 2018 Share March 24, 2018 (edited) I wonder if there was some pact for them to follow each other/unfollow/refollow each other on SM before the season starts since fans online try to make spoilers out of those connections, and contestants have probably picked up on it by now. I’m glad though that he doesn’t feel the need to be friends with everyone from his season. I miss the days of contestants coming off the show and being bitter and not caring to keep in touch with half the cast, or cozying up to alumni. It did seem like Jacob had a sour experience, and I’m sure getting a less than desirable edit for a big fan didn’t help matters. It seemed like he started off on the wrong foot to begin with, but maybe there was not going be a chance. I thought he tried too hard, and played too hard, too fast. I’m sorry this resulted in therapy, though. Edited March 24, 2018 by LadyChatts Link to comment
marys1000 March 25, 2018 Share March 25, 2018 I understood how he felt too. I know if I were on Survivor I would have at least a bunch of horrible humiliating moments! That has to be hard. And of course as a superfan it sort of doubles the feeling of feeling stupid. Of course Cochran had a the same sort of experience his first season. I feel like Jacob was cast as a "find me a Cochran!" However he didn't last as long and Probst didn't develop a crush so it all seems so much worse for Jacob. Couldn't stand Cochran and feel like his second season was what everybody accusses Boston Robs winning season to be. Can't say I liked Jacob enough to want to see again but he was fine by me. I wouldn't have minded seeing him around longer. If only he had waited to dangle his fake idol at TC it might not have looked like quite such a inane move. As to being friends with everyone, I wonder if thats on his end or has been on their end? That might be causing some of the sadness. 1 Link to comment

I actually had a lot of conversations with Brendan and Michael about aligning and how we wanted strong people. Jenna's name and Donathan's name were thrown around a lot. It was Jenna and Donathan. But Brendan has a very empathetic heart. Donathan came up to us and he was in tears. "Is my name being tossed around? I know I'm the weakest." He was petrified. Laurel was also very scared of being the vote. She came up to Brendan: "Are you guys voting me off?" She hadn't really made instant connections. I had conversations with Stephanie [Johnson] about doing an all-girls alliance, previous to Tribal. Donathan kind of threw my name out there. I was actually away, doing some interviews and stuff. That's when the whole tribe turned on me, because I wasn't part of one conversation: the one walk right before lockdown going into Tribal Council. It was very last minute.
