The Comics: Vaughan, Whedon and Beyond

Recommended Posts

I don't get Hulu. I doubt that I'll have it by the time Runaways hits the airw . . . streams. However, I've read most of the books, and I'd like to start a thread centered on the various comics. I was going to take my time, but then I read about a teaser for a potential new series. Given her involvement in Avengers Arena and A-Force, Nico would be a good first choice, even as she dials back the gothic look.

I kinda lost touch midway through Avengers Arena. I think the only deceased members are Gert and Victor (in the Vision series). Alex was dead, but he resurfaced and has caused havoc in Power Man & Iron Fist. And while I'm here: what happened to Molly?

So . . . what are your fondest memories of the runaways? I'm guessing it's 50/50 chance that it would involve Molly punching somebody way outside her weight class.

I think toward the end of Kathryn Immonen's run, Chase ran into a girl who looked like Gert, but the series was canceled before she could resolve it.  U wasn't reading it at that point, because Huberto Ramos was doing the art, and aside from his Spider-Man, I hate his style.

I think my favorite was a scene between Nico and the vampire who was trying to weasel his way into the group.

Vamp:  I was born at the turn of the century...

Nico:  You're FOUR!?!?!

Update: Old Lace gets a teaser. Didn't know she was alive. While I'm thinking about it . . . will she be on television? I don't know how big a budget a Hulu show would have.

Also: Am I weird for wanting to bring back Gert? I see her growing up to be a player of sorts in time. Like, if you bring her up to Kang or Immortus*, they would sigh and mutter, "Oh. her."

*I know they're the same guy. I can't think of any other time travelers on that big a scale.

She showed up alive during Avengers Academy, stuck in a dimension with, IIRC, Devil Dinosaur.

In the preview clip that's since been scrubbed, you can see the kids reacting to something that's growling behind a door, so I'm assuming that's her.

Bleeding Cool puts up posters, including a new one for Karolina. Dang. Also: Is Xavin still impersonating her in space?

If I had to redesign a Runaway, I'd give Molly a growth spurt. Nothing to turn people on (re: "Damn, girl, puberty loves you!"), but I think the youngest kid growing about a foot is funny. Also, if she goes to school, she can't bring herself to play any sports for fear of hurting others. The "classic" version is still sweet, though, even though it looks like she's aging backwards from the original series.

I only read the first volume of the comic (Alex, after betraying the team is in purgatory(?))

I know that Gert was killed later, but can anyone bring me up to speed on what's happened since?

OK so I read the comics awhile ago and my memory is only so so but...Amy is a complete show invention, right? What do you all think they are trying to do by adding this? I'm curious to learn how she died, and how/whether it ties into Pride and Molly's new dead parents backstory. If I'm being honest, I don't love Amy's new backstory, but I'm willing to be patient and see where it goes. I feel like Molly being Gert's little sister (more or less) would change the dynamics of the group in a way that I'm not crazy about. But we'll see, maybe it will work out well.

They've changed so much about this.  And that's not a bad thing, it's just surprising.

But no, Amy is a brand new thing.  The original idea was that the Gibborim were going to select six members of the Pride to save when they destroyed the world, and figured between 12 people in the group, that would give them incentive to work hard.  When the Steins got pregnant with Chase, the couples decided they'd each have a baby and have the kids be the ones saved.  And elder (or twin, I'm not quite clear) sister doesn't fit with that.

One thing I've noticed is that there was a scene where Nico said that she trusted Alex. That scene was included in a previously and I think someone else said the same thing. I wonder if that's foreshadowing his betrayal in the books.

I hope not.

I'm sure they couldn't change that element entirely, but if they're really setting it up that he's manipulating the rest of the kids, the show is kind of playing dirty pool since they're presenting it like he's just as confused about what's happening as the rest of them.  That seems unfair.  Literally, I can't think that they've shown any ambiguity about what he knows versus what the rest do.

There's also the fact that whatever the Pride is up to, it's clearly very different than what was in the comic.  And with the exception of Victor, they all have completely different personalities and lives.  Hell, Frank isn't even in the Pride (or at least isn't since his mind got wiped), to the point that I'm wondering if it's just Leslie who's the alien.  Actually, I'm wondering if Karolina is too.

They really did change a lot, to the point where I`m not even sure whats going to end up happening, or if the Pride is up to the same kind of evil as they are in the book. Its certainly something evil, but it might not be the same thing, exactly.

The kids are mostly similar (except for Molly, who doesn't seem much younger than everyone else) to how they were in the books, but the parents are quite different, with the most obvious changes being Frank not being in the Pride (and possibly not being an alien) and Molly's parents being dead. Not sure what point that will serve in the narrative, but I guess we will have to see. The parents are also more humanized here so far, and are more sympathetic, especially Geoffrey Wilder. I mean, relatively more sympathetic (as they are still clearly bad guys) but they do seem to feel worse about what they're doing here.

I`m really surprised how much screen time the parents are getting in the show. In the books, they dont have much in the way of character development in general, and their only real redeeming features were their love for each other and their kids. Other than that, they were all pretty sociopathic and seemed quite happy to sacrifice innocents for more power. Here, they're much more individualized and do generally seem to feel bad for what they've done, even if they still keep doing it. I wonder what they're evil plan is here? I assume the Gibberon is still going to be a thing, if Leslie's creepy church is named after it, but maybe its not what it was in the book?

The dynamic really is different on the show. I wonder if they  are changing the premise of Pride from doing evil things to rule the world to doing evil things to save the world. Kind of like Cabin in the Woods

So the sacrifices weren't for the Gibborim? Is Leslie deceiving the other members of Pride about the reasons for the sacrifice? In our brief glance of the future, is it the Gibborim destroying LA or something else?

The Julian McMahon character seems to start a significant split from the books.

I really like what they've done with the parents on the show. One of my only complaints about the book was the blandness of the parents, ie. and the fact that each couple were almost clones of each other (same job, same powers, etc).

Am I the only one that was kind of...surprised but pleased that it looked like Nico was into kissing Karolina?  I don't know if that's going to be an actual change from comic to series, but I guess I like that in 2018, she wouldn't freak out the way she did in the comic.

I was pleasantly surprised that they went with that approach to Karolina and Nico on the show. In the comics, when Nico was wearing Karolina's clothes after she left, it felt like Vaughan was toying around with her having feelings for Karolina (she was more upset that Karolina left than when her ex-boyfriend, Alex, died), but it ultimately went nowhere because he left after volume two (to me, it felt like there was no real plan after volume one, and the unevenness of the series seemed to reflect that).

Nico and Karolina are a very pleasant surprise. Considering some of the controversy around Xavin (like when one of the artists said Marvel wanted Xavin depicted as male, so the character was coming across as a way for Marvel to have a lesbian character -Karolina - without actually pairing her with a female character, and then the artist tried to do damage control when fans were upset), I think the environment is much more accommodating to an lgbt pairing than it was when the comic was released roughly a decade and a half ago. I know a few fans have expressed an interest in seeing Xavin return, but pairing Karolina with a character who wants to spend most of their time in male form isn't something that a larger viewership would let slide, and it would cause the kind of controversy that a small comics fanbase didn't.

I was surprised by Nico and Karolina, but I liked how they played it. I always thought it was hinted that Nico had a crush on her, but was deep in denial, and they never really did anything with it. I think this could be a fun pairing, and while I wouldn't be totally opposed to Xavin showing up eventually, I think they will probably have he/she as a woman more often. I just dont think the show will want the controversy (plus its something of a cop out) of breaking up what will certainly be a popular w/w couple so one of them can be with a character who is *mostly male.

So it looks like the parents are going to be both looking for the kids (with the help of the cops) AND going against Jonas, while the kids are trying to avoid the cops, their parents, AND Jonas. That should be interesting, and certainly a different dynamic than in the comic. I wonder if they will use any of the comic story lines now that the kids have actually run away?

*Not that having a gender fluid alien isn't an interesting way to play with gender identity, its just something they would have to do with delicacy.
