Season 1, Episode 1

Runners-Up Rematch

Four culinary heavy hitters join Darnell "Superchef" Ferguson for a double-decker rematch. First, celebrated author Nikki Dinki calls out her best friend and Food Network Star champ Chef Damaris Phillips to show the world that even 10 years later, she deserves to be a star. Then, restaurateur Tom Pizzica takes a second shot at Food Network Star Chef Aarti Sequeira. Tom thinks he was robbed 10 years ago, and this will be his chance to prove that the judges got it wrong.

There, on Beat Bobby Flay, was judge Jess Tom!  She was introduced as a food novelist.

Huh.  I missed that episode.  I didn't like her and, as I recall, no one on the boards liked her either.  Apparently, FN didn't either as she disappeared almost immediately and Christian is still around.

Just out of curiosity, I put "Jess Tom" into Search at Amazon and got nothing.  Either I spelled her name wrong or she isn't having much success being a food novelist.  Probably self-published.

It's under Jessica Tom. Her book is published by William Morrow and can be found on Amazon here:

In the section about her it says she went to Yale where she majored in English, then soon after did an internship with Zagat. She never went to culinary school or had any other hands-on food-related experience as far as I can tell other than liking to cook, doing various peripheral non-cooking projects related to restaurants and "dating a waiter" at Union League Cafe in NYC. 🙄

I always thought she was given a consolation win for some reason, like someone at FN owed her family a favor or something like that. So they made her a co-winner with Christian Petroni, "nudge, nudge, wink, wink". She has the resume of a young person from a rich family that dabbles in vanity projects because they don't need to support themselves.

I thought about trying "Jessica" and couldn't workup enough interest to do it.  : ) That's the book she was hyping when she was on FNS and she hasn't moved much past 2015.

Your assessment of her sounds spot on.
