Indoor Volleyball: Not Like You Played It In High School

Recommended Posts

That's the one that confuses me the most, as well as the libero  and that the ball touching the net on a serve is not out. But then, when I was in high school, girls basketball was played with six on each team. And I had to walk a mile to school. In the snow. Uphill both ways.

Just a few differences from when I played (in the 80s-90s):

  • Rally scoring
  • The server can stand anywhere on the back line - they used to be relegated to the back right
  • foot digs are allowed - when I played any time the ball touched you below the waist it was a dead ball
  • incidental net touches are allowed
  • net balls are allowed on serve
  • libero position
  • The up ref signals are different. It used to be "point to the floor to show ball down or raise hands to show out of bounds, then show point or side out."  Of course that's mostly due to rally scoring.

There's probably some other stuff I can't think of right now.

Went to a US/Brazil world league match in Los Angeles.

I have been to a shitload of concerts, ballgames and other shit, but the crowd for the Brazilian team was fucking scary.

They took up one side of the stands - probably about 250 - 300 people and they never stopped screaming  the  whole  evening.

I can only imagine the noise in the venues when the games are going on - especially when the home team hits the court.

I don't care for rally scoring.  It devalues getting/keeping the serve, and it just seems wrong that match point can be won by the other team making a mistake on their serve.

Can someone explain the libero to me, slowly and simply?  I'm assuming there are benefits as well as restrictions to the position?  Watching the US/Canada match now, and the US was playing without one.  (He's in there, now.)  Wouldn't that put them at a disadvantage?

I wish I could explain the libero simply; basically the libero is a back court defensive specialist. They stay in the back row the entire game and cannot block, attack (hit the ball over from a position above the net), or set an attacker from in front of the attack line.

I don't mind rally scoring too much, although I agree with what you said about "it seems wrong"!  I guess I "tolerate" it.  But once in a game before rally scoring, my team was behind 3-14, where 15 points was game. We came back and WON that game.  There's just no way a team can make that kind of comeback with rally scoring.

Disappointing loss by US Women to Serbia in the fifth set.  They had the momentum after tying it up by winning the 4th set, then had a lead in the 15 point tiebreaker.  I really thought outside hitter Robinson was terrible in the fifth.  She got stuffed a few times, and then after that, she got gunshy and chose to loft it softly over the block but was terribly ineffective.  Karsta Lowe was money in the fourth.  She had one error into the net in the deciding fifth but I thought she was their best hitter.

Interesting that while Karch is the head coach, he deferred a lot to his assistant during timeouts and let him give the pep talk and advice.

Why is the final decisive set only played to 15 points?  tyia

I seem to remember when they changed to rally scoring years ago, they said the matches were too long and this would speed up the game. Playing the 5th set to 15 is also done for that reason.  I think it does change the intensity of the game... makes it more exciting, because every point counts.

Did anyone watch the USA men's bronze match? great game. They played hard.

I started playing volleyball when the rules were new. I am in favor of the rally scoring because it means that everyone has to be on top of their game at all times. The games definitely move faster.

As for the libero, I love it. For my first year playing, I should've been a libero because I was damn good at recovering balls deep, but I couldn't serve to save my life that first year. That happens when you have teammates yelling at you every time it's your turn to serve.
