The Music of Nashville

Recommended Posts

I've enjoyed pretty much all of the music on this show so far, especially anything sung by Scarlett/Gunnar or by Juliette (with "Fade Into You" and "Undermine" being my favorites). I also like Charles Esten's voice a lot.

I hadn't realized that "If I Didn't Know Better" was a Civil Wars song. Now that I've heard it, I think it was a great choice for Scarlett and Gunnar. Here's the original:

I don't know a lot about the country music world -- which other songs were covers?

Discuss anything else relating to the music (featured or background) of Nashville here!

I was watching some of the cast members' live performances at the Opry, and I'm impressed that they're all good live! Here were a few I enjoyed:

I'm actually looking forward to that concert special now, although I'd prefer a new episode.

I started watching the show because it was about creating music, and the music is still the biggest draw for me. Sometimes when the show gets too soapy I wonder what I am doing here! But the awesome music keeps me coming back.

I too love Juliette and the Gunnar/Scarlett songs. I also really like Chip Esten's voice.

I have two of the soundtrack albums, volume one this season and last. I also bought a few songs by themselves.

The song that has surprised me the most has been Crazy Tonight, sung by Scarlett. It is not her typical song, much more lively and happy, but she really rocks it.

I haven't counted or anything, but anybody else under the impression that this season has a lot less new music than last season?

I've noticed that more songs are being performed multiple times this season as opposed to last season. I know "Trouble Is," "A Life That's Good," and "Black Roses," were used in at least 2 separate episodes. I think "What If I Was Willing," "Crazy Tonight," and "Hypnotizing" might have been used in three.

I just got the newest compilation album from iTunes and there are only 10 songs on it. Does anyone know if there are any other versions with more songs included? 10 seems like an awfully small album. The last album had 13 not counting the bonus tracks.

S1 had 55 songs in 21 episodes. So far in S2, we have had 53 songs in 20 episodes. There are two more episodes left so unless they don't have any new songs in the last two eps of the season, it looks like S2 will end up having more songs than S1!

Does anyone know if you can only get "Wrong for the Right Reasons" on the Target CD? I wonder why. I really like that song, but don't see it on iTunes and am not going to buy a whole actual Target CD just for one song.

I just remembered that this week's episode is the USO performance show so there probably won't be any new songs.

I wonder if they will do character albums for anyone besides Scarlett and Juliette. Maybe they can do a duets album or an album with just the guys.

I wish they had done some new songs for the military show, but I'm glad that the songs they repeated were done in new ways. I liked that Juliette and Luke sang Don't Put Dirt on My Grave Just yet as a duet, and I LOVED that Deacon, Rayna, Maddie, and Daphne sang A Life That's Good Together. I have been secretly hoping for the four of them to sing a song together all season. Next on my wishlist is for ABC to realize that when they do multiple versions of the same song, they should release them all as singles so we can buy them.

I really liked Will's new song Then I Was Loved By You. I heard it on the deluxe soundtrack last night so I knew we were getting at least one new song before the end of the season. I hope we get some new songs in the season finale!

ETA: Amazon says the following songs will be available for purchase on May 19, which is the Monday after the season finale. New albums are usually released on Tuesdays (and singles are usually released the day of the episode) so this seems weird that these songs are all scheduled for five days after the finale, but I'm just glad that they will finally be releasing more songs that are not on the S2V2 album.

I Can't Sleep Tonight - Lennon Stella

I Ain't Leavin' Without Your Love (acoustic) - Sam Palladio

One Light Shining - Jonathan Jackson

It Ain't Yours to Throw Away - Sam Palladio (this song is also on the track listing for the S2 Claire Bowen album below so I'm pretty sure this is a Scarlett/Gunnar duet version of the song he sang last week)

There is also one single scheduled for release on May 13:

Don't Put Dirt on My Grave Just Yet - Will Chase (it doesn't list Hayden Panettiere so I wonder if he will be singing it solo in the season finale)

Amazon also shows that the acoustic version of Then I Was Loved By You will be released on May 13, as will the S2 Hayden Panettiere as Juliette Barnes album (see above for track listing) and the S2 Clare Bowen as Scarlett album which will have the following songs:

1. Why Can't I Say Good Night (with Sam Palladio)

2. Waitin'

3. Come See About Me (with Chaley Rose)

4. This Town (with Charles Esten)

5. Every Time I Fall in Love

6. Crazy Tonight

7. Black Roses

8. Come Find Me

9. It Ain't Yours to Throw Away

Does anyone know who originally wrote Avery's most recent song, "One Light Shining"? I swear it sounds familiar to me, but I don't listen to much country so I was wondering if it was originally recorded as a pop/rock song.

According to Wikipedia, One Shining Light was written by Ross Copperman (who has had a few of his songs used on TV shows before and has written songs for several country artists), Blair Daly (who has also written songs for some big names), and Troy Verges.

I'm really disappointed that "Everything I'll Ever Need" is Target only.  I've been a digital download person only for years so I'll just have to wait and see if it ever gets released to Amazon, Rhapsody or iTunes.  Shame; it was one of my favorite songs from Season 2.

Thank you for posting these.  I've watched them and a few others; for television casting it's a pleasure to see that the actor's musical talents are genuine and that they can go lip sync free.

I think that's one of the reasons I like the aforementioned song so much.  That scene wasn't dubbed: they were singing live.  And it sounded great.

I read somewhere that all the performances on Nashville were done live. I know that this is true for JJ's Avery, whenever he sings you can see his artery or vein pop out.

I thought this might be the case, but I confess I wasn't sure about Connie Britton and some of the show's staged arena-sized performances.  But whenever characters were writing, rehearsing, hanging out in their living rooms with guitars or playing small venues, they definitely come across as live.  And it's something I really appreciate.

That one isn't Target only. I downloaded it from iTunes. You can get it off the Hayden Panettiere As Juliette Barnes, Season 2 album.

As far as live vs lip synching I read they do both depending on what the scene is. The big performances I'm sure are lip synched. But a lot of the song writing/hanging out acoustic stuff sounded live to me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Downloaded and listening.  I think I may go back and get the whole thing.

Is this putting out collections of an specific character's songs a new thing done during / after Season 2?  I hadn't heard about it before and will do some digital exploring later tonight.

Oh, and again, thank you!

They've only done the character albums for Juliette/Hayden and Clare/Scarlett so far, but they each have one for both S1 and S2. They were all released during S2 (even the S1 ones) in April/May. I'm hoping some of the other characters get them too. I would love a Gunnar/Sam album but since they put so many of the Scarlett/Gunnar duets on the S1 Clare/Scarlett album, I doubt that will happen (Clare's S1 compilation has 13 songs and 8 of those are duets with Gunnar plus one duet with Avery).

I wasn't sure where I should post this, but I'll give it a go here. Nashville's season 3 premiere is

going to have live singing (on both coasts!). It sounds like they're going to have the regular recorded show, & then insert the singing part in, Will & Deacon will each sing a song.

Edit: I went back & spoilered this because I'm not sure if it counts as a spoiler or not. I'll check with a mod & see what they say.

Boy the music on this show is SO far superior to country music radio now. I never listen to country except on this show, but my favorite radio station that I listen to in the car abruptly changed format to top of the charts country so I have been listening for a few days now. Every song just seems so interchangeable - hot girl, alcohol, pickup truck. Lather, rinse, repeat. Blech!

It's called Blind, and it's on iTunes.

"Blind" is the song Layla sang a few episodes ago, the club performance that wowed Will, Zoey, and Gunnar.  Her new song, "I Found a Way" isn't available, and neither is SAG's amazingly awesome "Borrow My Heart."  Which likely means both will be on a season 3A soundtrack and won't be released for some time.  BLECH.  Half the reason I watch this show is because I love (and own) almost all the music, and its frustrating when we have to wait for albums that no one buys in full anyway.

Really not wowed by this one to be honest. It's like they went through and picked the music I liked least from the first half of the season. Was hoping for the song Chip sang backstage before they all flew off to Rayna's house. Though it's cool he gets a writing credit on the soundtrack, it was a decent song, but it doesn't bring back fond memories for me given the context.

It is just me, or does the music seem to matter less on the show this season? There have been a bunch of good songs, to be sure, but the first several episodes especially it seemed that the music has really taken a back seat.

Midru - I agree it has taken a back seat that's because we needed to get the Rayna and Luke story told because for some reason the series honchos fell bewiched with Will Chase for what reason I can't figure out. He was never a match for Rayna but they pushed it on us and I guess they finally figured out IT"S NOT WORKING, wedding not going to happen. The last episode was the most watched and it was (IMO) because Rayna was calling off the wedding, to the biggest roar of applause from the Nashville Fans....Me one of those fans, hoping Callie, Dee can get back on track to what Nashviile was in season 1, music, up and coming artists, turmoil in the music industry, and giving us some personal problems in the private lives of some of the characters. Rayna/Deacon, Juliette/Avery, Scarlett/Gunner, Jeff, Teddy, Will and some characters that don't stay on too long.
