S02.E02: Under Arrest

Recommended Posts

Forgive me if I'm missing something here, but is Mary really going to get in trouble for this bed and breakfast? I've been to Amish country loads of times, and I've been to bakeries, furnitures stores, etc owned by the Amish, to profit from tourists. It's not like Mary is letting the tourists stay in her actual house. But then again, this is like 99% staged and manufactured drama.

I really like Jeremiah and Katie Ann as BFFs. It's kind of cute, in a weird way.

Rebecca has grown on me a lot in these last couple of episodes. She has been funny and witty without being nasty or rude. She has been one of the more enjoyable people here lately. I think as long as she doesn't have a nemesis (Kate, Andrew, etc) she does alright. I also liked Rebecca's remarks about how Mary has issues with daughters in law. It's so true. Her sons (specifically Andrew) had issues long before they met their wives, and she can't pin all of their faults on her daughters in law.

I really do feel for Chapel. Since most of the show is made up of really vapid, superficial nonsense, her very real suffering and pain really stands out. I can't imagine how difficult if must be for her to go through this alone, and not even know for sure that she will be reunited with Andrew. It really is heartbreaking. I hope he straightens himself out and is there for her in the future.

From what I understand, having the business (B&B) without the OK of the bishop, as well as having shunned family working there, are all reasons for Mary staying in trouble.

Chapel was right (or was it Rebecca?) when she said Mary was like Andrew. She is a rebel, non conforming. On one hand, I cheer her on, but knowing that these actions will make her shunned I wish she would do what her community wants of her.

I think Rebecca has been growing as English. Between a previous (probably abusive) marriage, a harsh childhood, her marriage to (CRS) seems to be the best thing in her life. When they showed the letter from her cousin un inviting her to her wedding, I could see her hurt, but she didn't let it undo her.

I suspect Jerimiah of bad intentions. He was married, I think I heard he had unpaid child support in the past. Yet he seems to be flirting with unsuspecting Amish girls. Mary better watch out for Kate. But I think Mary sees Jerimiah as another wayward son that she is trying to save.

Chapel, if she is stage 4 cancer doesn't have 22 months. She really needs someone. I like that Kate seems to care for her, but I see Chapel will be blamed when Kate's eventual leaving the Amish happens. But advances in cancer treatment may help give her time. Maybe Andrews lawyer can get an early release for him to help his sick wife and shunned mother. I hope so...

Anyone hear what happened to Mary?

Mary needs to make sure she has the permission of the local church leadership beforehand, in order not to get into trouble. Each church district is different in what is allowable, and what isn't.  Where I live, it is permissible for Amish business owners to have cell phones, although you can bet the Amish stretch that rule, in terms of who has a business and who doesn't.  On the other hand, Amish here are not allowed to ride bikes, but I know they can, elsewhere in Ohio.  However, they have these funky scooters that have regular sized bike wheels on them.

I couldn't believe they were painting over that wallpaper, with half of it ripped off the wall!! You could see the seams through the paint!

Chappel may have more time than you think. I have a BIL who has been battling stage 4 cancer for almost 10 years.  He has had his ups and downs, but he is still here.

Mary sure doesn't act like a typical Amish wife, that's for sure.  No way would a "typical" wife go off on her own, buy a house, and start a business, without her husband's approval.  Chester must be a laughingstock among his Amish community.

Am I a totally cynical bitch, or did anyone else think that shit with Mary looked fake as hell? When Katie Anne (aka MOSE) put down her knitting needles it was like, "That's my cue!" Neither she nor Reeeebecca looked super concerned. I thought for a minute that something probably DID happen to Mary, but this was a reenactment. But then, paramedics wouldn't be in on that kind of shit, so I don't know.

I agree with those who question Jeremiah's motives. That dude is shady as hell.

Other than that, I couldn't really pay attention. Katie Anne's obviously dyed, red hair was distracting me. It's clear that girl has already left the community.

This is probably really obvious and I just don't get it, but why is Katie Ann aka Mose?

Thank you!

I agree Jeremiah is so shady, and he's definitely working some kind of angle. However, I don't think he's interested in Katie Ann in that way. She just doesn't seem like his type, and I don't think he would want to risk burning his bridges with Mary and the Schmuckers. That being said, if I was Chester and Mary, I would definitely be wary of the situation. I also think that Katie Ann might have a crush on Jeremiah.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jeremiah was playing up the reformed bad boy card to get some Amish girls. I've known many silly, sheltered young girls that romanticized the idea of a bad boy, and thought they could be the one to "fix" him. Jeremiah has been around the block a few times and knows that, and will most definitely use it to his advantage.

I had the same thought.... Katie's reaction was obviously delayed and it looked like a super bad reenactment and if it were real, would the EMT's really allow a camera inside the ambulance?

i had my suspicions because of actual EMT's being there... but who knows how they convinced them to do it.

Maybe they told them it would be a good test drill for them.

When she first appeared in the show, she barely spoke (even less than she does now!) and was always lurking in the background, watching people. One scene stands out in my mind - they were in FL, Kate was in the backyard, and KA is watching her through the blinds. It was all sorts of creepy. Anyhow, on TWOP some of us were talking about how her silent lurking reminded us of Mose from The Office, and it just sort of stuck.

The EMTs seemed to be moving in SUPER slow motion from getting the stretcher out to getting inside the house.  Way too slow.

Talk about being a cynical bitch, these are things I noticed about this episode:

  • No way did those inept kids paint and fix up that house by themselves.  It was so obvious that it was finished by others who might have a little more of a clue about these things.  I say "a little" because it still didn't look like it was done by professionals at all.

  • Is it me or does Kate's nose look worse post-surgery?

  • In her talking heads, I thought Chapel might be wearing a wig, poor thing.

  • That restaurant Chapel went to with Rebecca looked a lot like the one in the movie "Groundhog Day", even though I know that one was in Illinois and is now a Mexican restaurant.

Yes, I thought Kate's nose looked worse. The swelling may not have completely resolved, but I still say she did it for the medical reasons but with cosmetics in mind. Her decision to go into the designer angle instead of modeling seems soon. Maybe it was because of the nose not making much difference?

I thought that Mary's illness may be related to being in that house. Coming attractions mention a "haunted" house or some such thing. I got the feeling it will turn out to be being in that house, an environmental reason.

Yes I noticed the wallpaper. I was surprised that they just painted it. I was also surprised that they painted the exterior without cleaning off the mold/mildew.

Oh hell yeah, I totally thought it was fake.  Especially the way the whole scene started out.  Mary standing there saying something like Now, Katie Ann and Rebecca, you two go into the living room and crochet for something while I go in here and work in the kitchen by myself. . .No, no - keep all the cameras in there with you! Nothing to see here in the kitchen.  Where I am all by myself!

Oh my gosh, NO, it's not just you! I had the same thought, but I felt too mean to say it, after questioning her motivation to GET a nose job last week. But yea, I didn't like it.

Thank you for explaining that!! I would have NEVER gotten it, since I'd never watched The Office. :)

ETA: I should also add that Mose is a very popular Amish name in my area, so I was doubly confused, since I didn't recall a "Mose" on the show.

I saw Mary's emergency as the opposite.  Not saying you guys are wrong just that I guess I interpreted things differently.  Once it was done I thought the way Kate acted wasn't so much "Oh that's my cue I'm supposed to react now", but that she seemed more resigned and fed up or bored with the whole thing - I felt like the thoughts that showed on her face and her slow reaction were more like "What shit drama is Mom pulling now, guess I'll go look".  Like she'd seen this before and thought it was just Mary going off on something again.

I also thought Rebecca's reaction was more real than scripted because of word she said "Seriously" -  She threw it in when she was telling them to call 911.  It was almost like a little hint that the show is scripted and she wanted to be sure the crew knew this wasn't part of the scene or plan and she said that to make sure they knew she wasn't kidding or pretending.

It's so hard to say, it could have even been a mix of re-enact and filmed live edited together.  They twist so much on this show - I think we were even supposed to believe that the house painting happened in something like 1-2 days even though when the kids were outside you could tell they hadn't even stripped the peeling paint from the house or treated it in anyway.  At one point i'm pretty sure they were putting paint directly over mold spots.  So either they faked it and someone came in and did the real job or they are super dumb about remodeling.   Since Mary would need permits to really run a B&B I'd love to see the local health department and building code department (or whatever they call it there) come in and point out everything that's wrong, dirty or not up to code.  Even with the Amish rules, no electric etc I think at minimum she'd have to have a certain number of fire extinguishers and smoke detectors installed to allow overnight guests and to cook and serve them food.

Watch Unreal. They really show that RTV is just bad amateur actors trying to perform bad writing drahmaticallie.

I do think they should draw the line with Kids. On some shows it verges on child abuse.

Do the young people on these crap shows realize that they might want to be married to a prominent person or run for office or be a teacher and Video is FOREVER>

Even though they were stained, I think Rebecca looked better in the Amish clothes. She definitely looks better with her hair pulled back without the homemade hair cuts.

You'd think they could get the ambulance closer to the house.
