Frank needs to deal with Petrov one on one while Claire tries to preserve the peace-keeping mission. Sacrifices must be made.

Frank is coming off a bit naive. I think his ego has blinded him to the fact that he's not always the player; sometimes he's being played. I wouldn't trust the biographer as far as I could throw him, and I don't believe Petrov for a second. We'll see where this goes, but I'm more likely to think his demand to have Claire removed as ambassador isn't so much about foreign policy decisions as it is about seeing how much he can manipulate Frank.

Yup, Petrov is def playing mindgames. But I think losing made Frank realize that Claire is always going to be target to manipulate him, and it's totally like him to try to minimize that threat as much as possible. Petrov's demand just gave him an excuse.

CASHEW!!! What a bright spot.

Frank pulling back from sexytimes with the biographer is the smartest thing he's done in a while. Let's not have a Threechum repeat.

Agree, although I suspected that scene was coming sooner or later. I don't trust that biographer and wish that Kim Dickens would dump him.

Claire as a diplomat made Frank vulnerable. She had to go eventually. I'm intrigued by what type of payback she will demand from Frank.

Can't say that I am interested in the Stamper Family Reunion.

I expected the sexy times scene the first time they got drunk together a couple of episodes ago.  I find those scenes so uncomfortable for some reason.  Maybe it's because everything Frank does seems so inauthentic.  Was he telling the truth when he said it wasn't pretend/make believe?  One never knows with Frank.

I damn near teared up when I saw Cashew on the doorstep.   I really hope that puts the 'finding Rachel' storyline to bed, although I suspect that it will probably bubble up again.  Especially now that Doug seems to making genuine emotional growth - smiling, talking to people, non-prostitute touching.  I'm gearing myself for some trauma down the line.

I think Claire had to go, really.  The idea that the President's wife could be in that role was always a little far-fetched.  Even if Petrov was playing mind games over whether Claire was manipulated or not - the essential truth stands: Frank's love for his wife clouds his judgment, and she's easy leverage.  He was willing to make ridiculous concessions to Petrov just to keep her in a role for which she is less than suited.

The final moments between Frank and Tom were pretty tense.  Hoping that Frank can pull back from that relationship a little now that they've both shown their hand.  Surely he wouldn't do anything unwise with so much at stake?

Remy seems to be as lonely as Doug.  If they weren't both so suspicious, they could become friends.  Lovers!  A political power couple!

Yes, yes, yes.

Claire's appointment is just one example of their various work-arounds this season, which I'm tired of. A bit is interesting, but for fuck's sake, it's really starting to stretch the boundaries of believability for me. For one thing, Claire and Frank spent two seasons outmaneuvering everyone, all the way to the oval office, no less. Now they're like Laurel and Hardy, always misreading and mishandling yet still flying along by the seats of their pants. And the fact that he's able to get what he wants, by hook or by crook, no matter how messed up, it is unbelievable.

Look, I know they can't have another president resign so quickly. It would be nice to have a throwaway line about that in there somewhere -- that the only reason congress isn't going after the Underwoods more vigorously is because the nation just went through the loss of one president. And I know he hasn't outwardly done anything to force his own resignation (other than be incompetent). But come on. The only push back he gets is "we won't work with you," or "if you don't sign this, FEMA gets no money"?

And Claire's epiphany in Russia seems a bit short-lived to me. Her "we killed people" seems like it never happened.

And Doug's warm family Hallmark moments seemed totally forced.

Best part of this episode: Cashew!

Part of me feels for Frank the way I feel for many celebrities - it must be difficult to trust new people, to always wonder if this new person is just sucking up so that he can sell you out later on. It must be so lonely to live that way. I don't pretend that Frank is innocent in this because he is sneaky and manipulative which has prevented him from forming real friendships.

Well it has already been established that Frank is bi so there was no surprise there. And power is a very heady aphrodisiac. I'm surprised that Frank didn't bite as he has had very little sex this season.

You're right, they do seem to be completely over their heads. For some reason though, I'm buying it because I think it shows that their arrogance and hubris have gotten the best of them. They just assume that everyone is stupider than they are, and easy to manipulate, but that's not the case. They finally got what they wanted, after all that scheming and deception, and now, the stakes are higher than they've ever been. Their rivals/enemies are just as smart (and two-faced and deceitful) as they are. I somehow find that more believable than in the first 2 seasons, where they were both effortlessly able to run circles around everyone else, except for maybe Remy.
