Small Talk: Chili's

we have 3 pokestops on our street and a gym. It was so weird to see people out on Friday night, with rain looming, lurking in the park defending the gym. It went from red to blue while we were there. What team did you side with?

I picked Team Yellow, which was obviously a mistake because I have yet to find a yellow dominated gym.

sounds like a poll question--  or several-- best theme song. You could choose songs for the actual quality of the song (Mission Impossible theme, Movin' On Up from The Jeffersons) or relevance to the actual show (Sit right back and you'll hear a tale...)

or general ear-wormy-ness (I Dream of Genie? Facts of Life?)-- or best tone setting theme (X-Files, The Sopranos)

Man, we could do brackets and everything, I've put too much thought into this.

Well, it's ALL @sacrebleu's fault as you can see in the quoted post above. That, plus I've been on vacation/ stay-cation, and I do have a propensity for puzzles and figuring out things.

Now, my thinking went BIG. I mean, the link below is a 64 field bracket, but I actually wanted to do 128!  I couldn't find a site that would let me do 128.  You may not find your favorite and others discussed in Chili's in this bracket because ... it will be in the NEXT bracket. (I'm hoping the next one is easier since I won't make as many mistakes)

I tried to embed a YT link in here so you could click and then go watch the theme clip, but that didn't work out. If you want to find clips to watch- well, google or search on youtube, OR PM me because I have a helluva list.

So with too much preamble behind us... get thee to the TV THEME SHOW-DOWN.

Also- there are MANY ROUNDS of voting that will need to happen. I have a schedule and will come back and post that tomorrow, what days you will be voting on the next rounds.

As David Letterman always would remind us, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is an exhibition. This is not a competition. Please, no wagering."

Ooh so we're going to do rounds until 1 show is victorious @King of Birds? Also, in my experience playlists and the like don't embed too well but you can always just add in the link if you want to.

So I've never seen Outlander or heard the theme song before now and I sort of want to watch the show. Also how could you put That 70's Show and BBT against each other? They both have good themes but I think BBT is probably better.

I hope we don't have to logon, or vote for every show. Otherwise mine might not have counted.

Mine all seem to be on a semi-major highway. Guhhhhh.

By the way, I have like, no clue what I'm doing in this game, despite the fact that my go-to throwaway email (that I made in high school 14 years ago) is a Pokemon reference.

Funnily enough I never played/watched Pokemon (well a little of the show but Team Rocket just really pissed me off) but I do like the idea of catching them and I like how they look.

At the moment the best thing seems to be to just collect what you can and level them up/evolve them. The gyms (at least here anyway) are glitchy and mostly not really worth the effort.

I'm not a Pokemon person either.  I've never played or given a crap about it, and my daughter has been way into it since she was little. However, I'm hooked on this. It's just so fun walking around and trying to catch what pops up around you. I have fought in a gym, because yesterday we happened to go to lunch at a place that was a gym. It was random - we'd made the plans before I'd even heard of or downloaded the game, but I don't really care about the gym and the fights. I just like finding them and catching them.

ETA: I can't seem to make that theme song game work and accept my votes. Do we really have to sign up for something with our email?

Thanks, KoB! This is going to be fun.

I have to wait til later to vote, after I figure out how to create whatever account is needed to login, and when I can listen to theme songs without my assistant around. Finally a group activity that's not about a sport I know nothing about!

ETA: I find it somewhat hilarious that some of the head to heads are between such disparate entities as Magnum and Twin Peaks, Roseanne and Dallas, Welcome Back Kotter and Dr Who.

I don't think you have to log in. Just click on one of the icons for the theme and you can start. Try that before logging in.

At first I tried to separate into lyric vs non-lyric themes but that was unbalanced. So then I was "lets mix it up, make 'em think about it"

Gonna try to attach a word document that has all the YT links for your listening pleasure.

--->  well that didn't work.  PM me if you want the list.

As for the schedule, you can see on top of the page the days/ hours/ minutes for each round so just pay attention to that. Basically we vote today (7/11)  then again on Wednesday (7/13) round 3 starts on Saturday (7/16) but since it's a weekend that's open til Tuesday. Round 4 starts next Tuesday (7/19) then Semifinals on Thursday (7/21) and final round on 7/24 so it'll be here on Monday 7/25. I am unsure if people check only when they're at work so that's why I try to make this a weekday thing.

Have fun!

I have the "Sanford and Sons" theme in my head from Scrubs.

Which Charlie's Angels version are you thinking of, KoB? I can't find any with the title(s) you listed. And I never watched any of the versions, but I know the sound of the 1970s show version's Henry Mancini instrumental version-- but I'm pretty sure that's not the one you mean, and I don't know if there were any lyrics.

There were girls in my 5th and 6th grade classes at school who were obsessed with that show and carried pictures around of Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Jacklyn Smith, and were continually debating which of them was which Angel.

That was fun. Unlike in political elections, where I usually either hate both candidates or like one and despise the other, I often liked both choices and had trouble picking between them. However, similar to allegations about the current political season, the system may be rigged! For three of the options, I could not get the system to accept my choice, no matter how many times I tried.

I noticed that old theme songs tended to be WAAAAY longer than current ones. Also, I never noticed that Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a similar sound to Batman! Likewise, Law and Order may have stolen it's Dun Dun from Perry Mason.

Pfft. See?  And they call it global warming.

Since I'm doing the bracket for "free"  I can't do anything about the Pinky & The Brain/ Sandford & Son "tie"  going to Pinky.  Its just that when I set up the matchups one of the shows has a better rank/ number and tie goes to the better rank.  So make sure there are no ties!

Well, since I'm top of the page

Are you ready for  TV THEME SHOW-DOWN ... PART TWO???

Yes! Another 64 looking to claim the top prize.  Link should start working at 516pm Eastern/ 216pm Pacific. -- soon.

I have now taken time out of my Pokemon Go schedule to vote on both :D

Well let me congratulate you on your keen scheduling decisions!  Voting for TV themes  >  PokemonGo!  Whodathunkit?

I, too, saw Ghostbusters today and enjoyed it. Not the greatest, but not terrible. The haters will still hate. Since SPY and The Heat have been on HBO/FX recently, I really was taken with how much weight McCarthy has lost. She looked good.

(edited)

PS- If this helps you figure out when to come back and check for the links to vote, etc.

Basically I made all the start/ stop voting times consistent for both brackets.  EXCEPT - Bracket 1 had a head start so Bracket 2 has extra time at the end.

Current rounds for both started July 16, and ends July 19 at 3am Pacific (that's where I live, that's the time zone)

Next rounds for both starts EXACTLY when the current ends  - July 19 and goes until July 21

I saw Ghostbusters today and really enjoyed it. Kate McKinnon gets the sort of badass action scene you usually only see guys get, and lots of fun cameos from original cast members. I recommend it!

Yeah but Chris Hemsworth's character is just so thinly written and basically there for eye candy. This is BULLSHIT! Who are young boys meant to use as a role model*

* is what I read from a reviewer today and laughed my arse off :D I myself have not seen it yet because it will obviously ruin my childhood.

I saw a similar remark, about how the men characters are all not well developed. And I may have laughed and turned to my husband and said, "Awww, is the reviewers widdle fweewings hurt that a man is depicted unfaiwy? Awwww, my heart bweaks, poor widdle thing. Let's go gang up on those mean wadies for making you sad." Which then turned into, "Yeah, they can go fuck right off. Because I don't have any eye rolls left for that shit."

We've got plans to see it this coming Saturday and I'm looking forward to some laughs and some fun.

This article has an interesting point about those dumb male characters, but...yeah. They just don't get it.

I don't have enough middle fingers to flip off anyone who has the nerve to complain about men being portrayed as beautiful idiots. Oh, but it's ok for women to be vapid sluts in films? Ok!

I love how one of the selling points on the "Bubba Jetpack" is that you don't have to ride with the jerk who talks about his score.

RE the Ghostbusters detractors: It's amazing how thin-skinned and whiny some men are.

I am loving the interviews Leslie J and Kate M have been giving on their press tour (are MM and KW also making the rounds? If so, I haven't seen them). Kate is Kate and I always love her, but I had never seen leslie in interviews before, and she's super-endearing. Really looking forward to seeing the movie. I've seen so many clips, I'm a little worried I will feel like I've already seen it, but I'm looking forward to it anyway.

Bitch magazine's review of GB really has those "woe is me the males are poorly represented" losers pegged.

Lost a lot of the people who initially voted ...

Bracket 1 - Round 3

Jeffersons 8-7 over Batman

Buffy 8-4 over Patty Duke  .... poor Babalu!

===============

Bracket 1 is down to

Jeffersons vs MTM    Cheers vs All in the Family

Fresh Prince vs Gilligan    Muppet Show vs Addam's Family

BTW - it does baffle me how some match-ups have 12 - 13- 14- 15 votes. I mean,  even when I vote, I just go through them and vote either one way or the other. Not sure - do some people skip voting? It's either that or this site not registering the votes, somehow.

PS- @bethbox sent a note that the site wouldn't let her vote. I know @possibilities had issues too.  Sorry if this is happening, I'm not sure why.

I voted for all of them, even if I didn't have a theme preference; I just voted for the show I preferred, instead.

A wildfire is creeping closer to Anchorage; as it spreads southward from its origin (McHugh Creek Park, about 6 miles south of the southern edge of town), it may take out a small subdivision (17 homes), and is creeping up on Potter Marsh as it spreads north. Potter Marsh is a major wetland area, and there are also homes in nearby Potter Valley.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we are going to get rain until Thursday, which may be too late.  I think this is as close a large wildfire has gotten to Anchorage that I can remember.

even though you left off HR Puff In Stuff,

I thought about suggesting several Sid & Marty Kroft themes (Sigmund the Seamonster, Electro Woman & Dyna-Girl, The Bugaloos, HR Puff in Stuff)-- but since they were on a rotating schedule of Kroft weirdness -- instead of on regularly-- I didn't think they would make the cut.

Seriously, what were those Krofft guys on?

9 hours ago, Kalliste said:

Also, I don't always vote on everything so I'm one of those people

Well.  I should have figured on this.  Way to go, Kalliste. [/sarcasm font]

And yeah, hoping the fires calm down for Anchorage MichelleAK!  There was a fire in the Hollywood hills  yesterday. From the looks of it, it was near an ex-boss' house. But they knocked that down pretty quickly.

As for @stewedsquash and her HR PuffnStuff lament - hey!  We put in the Banana Splits! Did you vote for that? I was not a big fan of most of the Kroft shows. It may have swayed the choices. But don't get me wrong- sacreblue reviewed the brackets and crossed out some stuff, added in others. Because ya know, this is all her fault.
