CoStar, I agree with you on so many levels. And I could see Reid and Elle, too, because she treated him as an equal, a friend, and not as a kid. And I was never (!) satisfied with the "resolution" of the Prentiss-is-dead storyline. Plus, everyone knows gastric ulcers are caused by h. pylori and it was SO unfair of Emily to say that Reid's grief was giving her one, I'll grant you that.

I think if Elle had been on longer, when the "cool kids" were writing the show, we could've seen her and Reid's friendship deepen, and I would be more inclined to buy in to the idea of a relationship between the two. When he went to her room to talk, and they had a drink together, there was a lot of unexplored territory there (...which you aptly explored in one of your fics, if I recall...)

But overall, I adored the Reid and Prentiss bond, and I always thought there was something there (and I always thought something smoldered IRL as well, but I digress...).

Ultimately, though, it boils down to this: initially they wrote Reid as an awkward (though beautiful) boy and over the years have ignored the fact that he has become a more confident, beautiful man. I completely bought into the idea of the male ingenue in Season 1. Now, it's just pissing me off.

And oh, Mistaken. I didn't set out to read it, but I did. Wowza.

I've known for a long time about the bisexual thing. I think its odd that having Reid be interested in JJ is what killed the idea that he might like men too. However, even though I am bisexual, I personally am very relieved they didn't go there with the character and I *do* think it is too late in the game to introduce it. Well, I don't want them to because I don't want him to be defined by his sexuality. I grew up in a time where homosexuality was considered an "abomination" and at first the only gay people they would ever put on TV were complete creeps, but then they started adding gay characters on shows like NYPD Blue and showing them in a sympathetic light. I think there were even some on ER. Then gay characters became a crazy and everyone had to have them no matter how ludicrous and in the comic books in particular they went overboard with showing just how "cool" they were to have gay characters and they were just hitting people over the heads with it.

So, all of that left sort of a sour taste for me when it came to how they handled characters' sexuality. And even today, there are people who don't get bisexuals. There are gay people who tell bisexuals they can't be both-- and there are straight people who say the same. It's sort of like being agnostic-- catching flak from both atheists and theists. LOL.

Anyway, I could have seen the older writers possibly having pulled it off-- and I know a lot of people liked the character of Ethan as a potential boyfriend for Reid (or at least past lover or something), but I'm glad they didn't go that route, because I'm pretty damn sure that his sexuality would be the only thing these current people would be able to focus on and he would be the bisexual former genius instead of the guy who used to be a genius who happens to be attracted to both men and women.

So, I'm perfectly fine with Reid liking women. Too bad the writers have a hard time writing women who like Reid.

I agree, zannej, if he had been written back in the day as bisexual, it might have worked, but to try with the current crew to write him that way, I'm sorry, it just would be a laughing stock. As a straight woman, I admit I like it that Reid is portrayed as straight, it plays more into my fantasy, but I would have enjoyed his bisexuality if it wasn't the thing that defined his character, it wasn't his "extra special"ness, as i said before. For instance, I always thought of Emily as being bisexual, no real reason, just seemed like she could be and i had no concrete thing telling me she wasn't. It wasn't what defined her character, and really, the only character who has been partly defined by his sexuality has been Morgan, which is OK, I guess. Not my favorite character.

Have never understood this. Will never understand this,

It can't be that they don't see his appeal. It's canon now that prostitutes cannot resist him, and I get that, and I find it funny and sweet. I've said before that I'd love to see women fawn over him a little and ignore the other males, and have Reid not be entirely clueless about it -- although I think he has grown considerably since Lila Archer and wouldn't let himself be swept away. Unless he wanted to be.

I think they just can't wrap their tiny brains around writing Reid's reactions, although MGG gives great face and is able to emote a lot of what isn't written.

They should have a contest to allow a talented fan to write a little sidebar love interest for him. I'll bet a lot of fans could do quite well in that regard.

The only bad thing about that is that their concept of talent might not be ours, and they would most likely pick the most cutesy scenario that would make him look the nerdiest.

I would absolutely hate if they made Reid bisexual and then he's the token LGBTQ character and that's all he's good for. In the beginning, I don't think that's how it was intended. I like Reid - especially earlier Reid - the way he is (was) written and his value to the team. His sexuality shouldn't affect any of the things I love about him, and if it does, then they're doing it wrong. It's frustrating that the network didn't get that. Also, I should add that nearly every day this week I have passed by protesters who are pulling their kids out of school and bringing them to rallies to protest against (among other things) the inclusion of different genders and sexualities in the new curriculum, because heaven forbid their kids are taught that there is nothing wrong with being LGBTQ+++. So this issue is already at a boiling point for me, and then I came home and read that CBS insisted that Reid be changed from bisexual to straight, which was just the icing on the cake.

At the end of the day though, I really just hope that they do something good with Reid. I have no doubt that some fans could write a much better storyline than some of the current writers, but I doubt those are the ones that would get "chosen" if they did a contest. Also, everyone has different ideas of what they would like to see. Personally, I just want to see him happy with minimal-to-no drama and possibly a baby Reid at some point in the future. I think he'd be a great dad.

secnarf, I agree with all your points. I never read anywhere that TPTB had explicitly forbid Reid to be bisexual, but maybe I didn't see it. Anyway, disgusting. i'm glad he's the way he is now, and i agree that he would be a great dad (although he would be as an GBTQ, too).

Apropos of almost nothing (I swear those words will be my epitaph), did you see that Oxford English Dictionary may be adding a new gender neutral prefix "Mx?" I really like it. I've always used Ms., even after marrying, but this is even better, just personally speaking.

The article I found said that it was TPTB that nixed the idea early on (link is above):

Show creator Jeff Davis shared on Twitter his original vision of Reid, writing: "Fun fact for Criminal Minds fans. I was originally planning for Reid to be bi. That got shut down by 4th episode with his crush on JJ."

After the Twitter responses from his first tweet, Davis wrote: "To clarify: I know what bisexual is. I'm a gay man myself. I got push back from the powers that be."

Also, no I had not heard about Mx as a new prefix! That is fantastic. I work in the healthcare field and everything is abbreviated with an "x" (Rx, Dx, Tx, Fx, Abx, etc), so Mx seems perfectly natural to me :)

Does anyone else notice Reid sometimes does the opposite?

When everyones eating, he won't be.

When everyones sitting, he will be standing.

Sometimes he will be eating when no one else is.

Also did anyone notice when he was talking with the pizza in 'The Hunt' he was waving the slice around? For some reason I found that funny. I imagined mushrooms falling off and hitting everyone as he talked.

He is probably doing it to be different. Hey the poor guy has to do something to get people to notice Reid since the character rarely gets anything of significance to do.Of course now the fact that he is breathtakingly beautiful is enough for me to have taken notice. I do wonder if it's scripted or a bit of improvisation on MGG's part.

I also agreed with those choices. And thank goodness they did not bring up his support of JJ in episode 11. Because that was far from one of his best moments. It is also too damn bad that they seem to have a better handle on Reid's popularity with CM's audience than Messer or even CBS does.

BTW is it true what they said about Twitter and this so called 2 minute panic mode. Or is that a bit of exaggeration on their part.

I don't know about the Reid thing in particular, MMC, but given the nature of Twitter in general I wouldn't doubt it.  :-)

I do really like their choices, though, and that Reid's grief for Gideon is at the top of the list. At least somebody's paying attention other than us.

Its sad that the top 5 are probably about the only 5 moments Reid had in the season. LOL. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but it feels like those were the only things he got to do.

And I wish they had changed the description of what went on with Loker. He showed his knowledge of foreign languages in those scenes as well as his desire to help/protect people that makes him endearing. When he tried to run out the door to save the woman, it was pure Reid. He couldn't just stand by and let someone die if he could save them.

I agree with these choices. :)

Thank you so much for sharing this list. And I'm so glad to see Reid's reaction to Gideon's death. Seeing him in the morgue trying to remain stoic as his shaking hand wiped away his tears just tore me apart. Matthew could have chose to play the scene with a full-on ugly cry, totally chewing up the scenery, but instead went for a more subtle, well-contained way to convey Reid's state of being at that particular moment in time. Well played, Mr. Gubler, well played.

Good to see Reid (and Matthew's excellent portryal of him) get some media love.

It's no secret that Spencer Reid is my fave CM character, and I've loved him since Day 1. It's also no secret that I want him to fall in love and be happy and have the promise of many babies before the series ends. BUT: since it's hiatus,I have some time on my hands, and I've looked at several tumblr pics and various blogs, and my question is: do you think it's an accident that there is so much homoerotic tension between Reid and Hotch throughout the series from Season 1 until this point? I know the initial premise was that Reid was bisexual (and I'm glad they didn't pursue it), but there are so very many moments between Reid and Hotch. Hotch displays so much tenderness toward Reid, and Reid shows so much blatant affection and admiration for Hotch. Do you think it's accidental on the part of writing and direction, or do you think it is the intent of the writers (they just don't strike me as having the ability to do "subtle" to write a subversive undercurrent), or am I just imagining things?

I agree with you Droogie. Although we have seen few of those moments of tenderness of late. I never in my life used to read slash fanfiction but these days I find the Hotch/Reid fanfics are my CM favorites and I think this must be because of the relationship they have - or at least used to have. I've also wondered if that was a factor in my absolute hatred for the sickly sweet, stalkerish Beth!

I think one of the saddest things about CM in the Messer years is the loss of that connection between them.

One of the very best fanfic writers posted this as an inspiration for one of their stories:-

I don't read slash as a rule but found myself reading some H/R as well. Which author are you referencing? I saw a photo from Season 5 where Hotch comes to the round table room to get Jack and he and Reid have some serious eye game going on. I had never noticed it before.

The author is Rivermoon1970 on AO3. Her Time and Again series is heartbreaking but wonderful.

If it makes you feel better, I'd never seen the picture before, as I don't frequent Tumblr or even have an account there. I was looking for another Reid pic and found that randomly. It wasn't carbon-dated or anything.

A question about 'The Reid effect'

I should know this since I've written down all of his lines, but does it only come up once? Or did they just give up on it since he gets along with children after that episode. If that's the case, do you think they just forgot about it? If it happened enough before the show that they made a name for it you would think it would happen more. It's actually on the main reasons why I liked his character straight away. I liked the slightly creepy/weird things that were stated/shown, children and dogs apparently disliking him, that he spends his time googling things like 'death, banned from several casinos for counting cards, sneaking up on Ethan in an attempt to scare him and mentioning he used sleight of hand during college exams. I know the Ethan thing wasn't in season one like the rest of those things but I really loved that moment.

Getting off track. So does anyone remember any moments where the Reid effect happens? Or am I just misunderstanding what it was?

For me, it was just a small joke since Hotch was trying to put the man at easy to then interrogate him.

*eyebrow*

It wasn't carbon-dated or anything.

You made me laugh!

Besides, this is a CM forum for fans, not ET news, so I don't think it's relevant how old a picture is.

The Reid Effect was only mentioned in the pilot I believe. At that point, none of the characters were fully formed. Plus Reid was originally written a bit more robotic and unemotional, and I don't think they had incorporated Matthew's natural warmth into Reid.

I'm posting this here bc it involves Reid. It is in regards to some discussion about an exchange between Rossi, Reid, and Morgan in Elephant's Memory.

Note: Reid was already sitting, so Morgan did NOT look at his butt when he said "I hope it was a she".

That was how I remembered it. The video shows what happened. Reid was starting to sit before Morgan turned and made his comment. I would take what it showed in the video over what was posted on IMDB. They get a LOT of things wrong on the IMDB. Although the comment was that Morgan turned to look at Reid from behind indicated that Morgan was behind Reid, not that he was turning to look at Reid's behind. LOL.

I know A&E edits the episodes...and I've seen that scene more than once to be fairly certain that Morgan looks at Reid's behind. Maybe I'm confusing it with another scene, but I do remember a scene like that well.

This rip is from CTV, and no, I don't know if they edit like A&E (which drives me crazy; depending on which episode it is, I won't watch A&E) but it seems like this is the intact version, and i've seen it many times, I can usually tell. The IMDB quote just says "Derek Morgan: [turning to look at Reid from behind] I hope it was a she." - he glances at Reid, who is already sitting down when they show Morgan turning and smirking.

Here's what I loved from this:

- Reid, caught lying, and being aware that he was caught.

- Hotch, silently letting the others to find out what happened but being deeply involved in Reid's excuses. Worried, attentive leader.

- playful Morgan, that knows when to just drop it

- Rossi's 'daddy' attitude: that look tells Reid just everything, and makes him drop his eyes to the table.

- Prentiss reaction: she seems to think Reid lying and failing to convince them is just too damn endearing.

- Hotch just finishing the issue by switching into 'work-mode'

- JJ not rolling eyes, not snorting, and just having a regular (non-raspy) voice.

- no Garcia at all.

I think it's time for me to go on re-run mode.
