Away from the 12th Precinct: The Cast in Other Roles

So I first notice Nathan back on Two Guys and a Girl. Watched a few eps of Firefly as it aired but definitely saw the movie. Finally watched his role on Buffy this yr in a netflix marathon since I gave up on the series when it moved on to UPN. I gave up on Lost and Desperate Housewives before he guest stared on them. Maybe I'll netflix them eventually. As many times I've had seen Blast from the Past, I've never noticed him since it was a small part. Same with Saving Private Ryan until this yr when it was repeating on tv. Saw Waitress, netflix Slither before it was taken off last year and all the other Whedonverse roles he's done. As much as Nathan seems to like doing the comedy stuff, it'll be fun to see him do more villain type roles. I don't watch animation or play video games so I've haven't seen any of those voice work.

Susan would've been the 2nd most recognized cast member to me cause of Dharma & Greg and My Best Friend's Wedding.

I remember Penny most as Sherry Palmer before I gave up on 24. It's been so long since I've seen ER and there's been so many actors that came and went so I don't remember her there. Didn't watch her Star Trek series either.

Jon was recognizable to me for Generation Kill. Got in in Blue Ray so I watched it a few days ago since I hadn't rewatched it since it originally aired. verdana makes a good point that he's good at the cynical tough guy role. I knew 3XK was Gen Kill reunion but it wasn't until rewatch that Michael Mosley showed up in part 6 for like a 5 min scene with Jon and Lee Tergesen. Didn't realize Heartbreak Hotel was another reunion too with Eric Ladin. I still don't remember him in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Stana, Tamala, Ruben and Seamus weren't that familiar to me but apparently guest started in several tv shows I watched. Stana was in the good season of Heroes and when I rewatched her 2 eps on netflix, her character would've been a decent recurring role if she had more than 5 mins of screen time. TNT has The Libriarians movies on their site so maybe I'll watch her in that one movie. Tamala was lead white girl's token black friend in Can't Hardly Wait. KInda amusing that only like 10 people had character names in that movie so Tamala was known as girlfriend #2. I did remember Ruben as TWW Bartlett's physician in the 2nd ep after I started to watch Castle. Still haven't seen anything Molly has done besides Castle.

On to the recurring guest stars, so Arye Gross I remember from Ellen. Michael Trucco will always be known as Anders on BSG to me. Do like Victor Webster on Continuum so I hope it gets another season. Jack Coleman was great on Heroes. Same with Geoff Pierson on Dexter.

I must admit I didn't immediately recognize any of the cast from other roles when I first started watching Castle. A poster on TWOP recommended I check out Serenity and Firefly and I loved it, Nathan showed his range there for humor and drama very well but I've not watched anything else he's been in.  Seen a few youtube clips of his soap opera days.

I do remember Susan from her days on Falcon Crest (heh) but the rest were unknowns to me.  I just found a youtube clip of Maggie's death on Falcon Crest I must have stopped watching before this! Soap opera deaths..oh dear me poor Maggie death by bling!

Quite a few of the guest stars you discover have worked with members of the existing cast at various times. Coleman worked with Stana on Heroes,

The first thing I ever saw Nathan in was Waitress, and that's when it first came out in theaters. Of course, since I hadn't seen Firefly or watched OLTL (I was an NBC and CBS soaps watcher back when I watched them at all), I had no idea who he was (I only knew Keri Russell), but he was good in that film. I watched Firefly and Serenity after I caught up on Castle in the summer of 2011. Loved them both.

The only other thing I would have seen Stana in was her guest stint on 24, but I didn't remember that until after I started watching Castle. She did have some great scenes with Kiefer though. And Penny was most memorable to me on 24 as well. When I had a chance to meet her, I told her how lucky she was to work with both Kiefer AND Dennis Haysbert. ;) I don't remember her as well on ER, but her hair was so much shorter, I don't think I'd recognize her as easily now. lol She also had a good guest role on TXF in season 8, which I remembered when I did a rewatch recently.

Susan Sullivan will always be first and foremost Maggie from Falcon Crest. When I talked to her at the Castle Paley event in 2012, I fangirled that her death scene was something I still recall to this day. She got a kick out of that. ;) And I also loved her as Greg's mom on Dharma & Greg (which I watched faithfully). I forget she's in MBFW until I come across it on cable. lol

I watched Army Wives in the beginning, but Seamus doesn't stand out to me. lol And I also remember Ruben from TWW (why does he always die tragically on my shows? lol).

Never watched Two Guys & A Girl & A Pizza Place (what a title!), but did Ryan Reynolds break out into the movie leagues from that?  I've nothing against RR but it's curious how he broke out while NF didn't.  I think if Firefly & Serenity had come out later in this age where movies like Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy are all the rage, they would have succeeded on a grander scale.

I can't remember when I watched Firefly, but it was after it had been cancelled, and I was probably reading some critic's list of best shows to have gotten cancelled, so decided to check it out especially after all the good things I'd read about Joss Whedon's television.  I did enjoy Firefly a lot.  The setting was something new, the cast was good, the dialogue was sharp and there was a good mix of drama and comedy.  Drive was the next project of NF's I checked out, both for him and for Tim Minear, the creator, who had been involved with a few other cancelled too soon shows I'd enjoyed (Wonderfalls, The Inside, Terriers etc.).  I thought Drive had a lot of potential too (the actress who played Serena Kaye was in it as well with a few other familiar faces) but alas, also cancelled too soon.

Also enjoyed him in Waitress and Trucker and Dr. Horrible's Sing along Blog with NPH (hope there will really be a sequel) prior to seeing him on Castle.  Procedurals weren't really my cup of tea but I did enjoy classic films with the witty banter and Moonlighting, and NF had a likeability factor as an actor, so I gave Castle a try.  His chemistry with SK and the lightheartedness of the show was what had me hooked.

I enjoy NF playing dramatic characters with a harder edge like in Firefly and Drive, so as much as I enjoy his comedic work, I hope he doesn't get typecast in buffoonish roles after Castle considering the direction his character has taken.  Work he's done in films during Castle like Much Ado About Nothing, Percy Jackson have been more comedic roles.

As for the others, Susan Sullivan was familiar to me from occasional watching of Dharma & Greg.  I'll kind of always think of her in her redhead Martha wig now than as a natural blonde.  I later recalled Stana from her guest role in The Closer, but not her other guest roles.  I enjoyed The Librarian movie, but FLO and CBGB not so much.  I would be interested to check out Generation Kill sometime as it got good reviews as well as PJJ on The Larry Sanders Show as I think she might be quite good in a comedic role as well.  I would like to see more of MQ's work too.  She seems as capable to me as most of the actors cast in all the teenage franchise films these day.  Don't know if being on Castle precludes her from trying to get roles in those films.

I've been looking for a NA version of Two Guys and a Girl, but apparently it has only been released in PAL DVD format.

But there is this:

Thank you for this, I spent quite a long time looking at Nathan's biceps in the various array of t-shirts they let him wear. They certainly didn't shy away from showing them off understandably pity they can't do so on Castle.

Like madmaverick I hope he doesn't get typecast after Castle in slapstick style comedy roles. He seems to genuinely enjoy that kind of humor but my favourite performances of his have been more serious.

And Wendy thanks for the clip on Seamus' demise as Ian Devlin made me laugh. I seem to recall he dressed up as a doctor with blood spattered on his coat during the Halloween episode on Castle in S1 and Seamus mentioned he was paying tribute to a previous role.

Not sure this fits but Seamus was on the quiz show The Chase and killed it.  Very smart dude.

There was a short discussion about it the night it aired in the "other shows" thread. I agree, dude's wicked smart. I was crazy impressed. I'd watch his part again on Youtube if I could find it.

Came across a great new Funny or Die video - Assassin Banana - featuring Nathan in a voiceover as Chick del Monte, lol, and also featuring Scarlett Johansson. It says it's episode 1 of 3, so there may be more of Nathan as "Chick" to come. ;)

All 3 episodes are up. ScarJo goes all out as a fancy girl apple and apparently Alan Tudyk gives some background grunts and groans as a "Homeless Onion". Pretty funny and weird in a Robot chicken kind of way. My favorites were "... a Manana!" and the Beetlejuice gag.

Watching basic cable movies in the background of a Saturday afternoon - just noticed that Perlmutter, aka Ayre Gross, played the first future murderer arrested by Tom Cruise in the opening scenes of Minority Report.

If anyone is interested sounds like the Fillion/Tudyk project is coming to fruition soon.

On Wednesday next week ALL will be revealed. Well, maybe not all, but SOME @NathanFillion @alan_tudyk #workingtogetheragain

Lol. I doubt Tudyk's stellar turn as a Homeless Onion with half a word and two growls here can be described as #workingtogetheragain. Weren't they going to start a kickstarter for some web-series connected to sci-fi and/or Comicon scene? I see Nathan doesn't do Charity Water for his birthday this year, maybe it's because he's going to ask people to help the kickstarter instead. I'm curious to see what they came up with. Sean Maher seems to be there too, and probably countless other familiar faces in guest roles. Everything depends on scripts though.

Annnd... here I am, replying to myself, lol. But yes, seems like it's pretty much how I thought.

Indiegogo

Variety

EW

Edit: The video is cool, guest stars are sweet and they have a great perks system there. I'm no kickstarter specialist, but to my untrained eye they're doing more than fine so far. The sum shoots up considerably every time I refresh.

Nice to see them getting some press attention.  The premise sounds very meta, but I guess it was intended that way.  It does kind of sound like Extras + Galaxy Quest heh.  Agree that everything depends on scripts, as written by Alan.  I hope they bring the funny and wish them every success.  Looks like they're having fun making it and no matter what, it will be an exercise in complete creative control.

Gina Torres' cameo in the promo video was my favourite.  She's just cool.   Nathan made me laugh with his crack about (in)security man, and he and Alan have a nice rapport as usual, so that bodes well.

ETA: Nathan's going to be doing his birthday campaign for Charity Water in September, probably in conjunction with the charity's September Campaign.

Hasn't Alan pitched the idea of the stars of a failed sci-fi show doing things together before? It just seems very familiar.

My main question (that I've not seen an answer to, even in the EW interview): is this a summer project? The don't mention Nathan has a very full time job with Castle, and presumably will in the fall, too. Three 10 minute episodes shouldn't take too long, right? But Alan says he's written 10 scripts, so they're looking for at least 10 episodes. [Except if the $425,000 is for the first 3 episodes, where is the funding for the last 7? Do they expect to crowdfund more than the $425k? (oh, they're already at $80k. Geez.])

I'm intrigued by this idea, but I'm not ready to let Castle go, so I'm really hoping this is a side project and not foreshadowing. Although the premise is pretty Alan heavy, so maybe I'm worried over nothing.

McManda, I think Alan and Nathan co-wrote a buddy comedy about 2 con men (real ones not as in people attending conventions) that they actually sold to a network ages ago.  It was either 2 con men or a con man with a cop brother, something like that.  Apparently it was a stressful experience, so maybe that's another reason why they didn't go the network route again this time.

Pretty sure this is a side project from Castle.  Nathan may be more tied into it as a producer than as an actor, as the show appears to revolve around Alan.  And I don't think the actual shooting of 10 minute webisodes is a huge time commitment, thought the production of the series may be.

I think whatever film Stana is doing in the spring is just a hiatus project as well.  I haven't seen any sign that the show is ending this season.  If it were, maybe some of the actors would have been auditioning for pilot season already.

Wow, they're already past 100K. It's gonna be fun following this campaign :)

I believe it was just Nathan who wrote and sold it. Alan was supposed to co-star.

I just had a horrifying thought about, what if NF asked Luke to do wardrobe on Con Man? Thankfully, the horror was shortlived, as immediately I saw a tweet from Whedon's usual wardrobe department head Shawna Trpcic, and breathed easier. Guess she's involved.

And just checked the Indiegogo page — Con Man follows in the Veronica Mars movie footsteps, they're already past their goal and counting.

I see a bit of panic among Castle fans on Tumblr and Twitter, but I really don't see how 3 10 minute episodes (or more, judging by the speed it's funding) of web-series, where NF doesn't even play the main part can interfere with Castle. Unless of course it ends on its own.

The (first) goal met video is cute with Alan's accent and Nathan as a footballer lol.

Given what Dara said, I wonder if they have any say on which director gets used for their episodes?

They may have some input but I am guessing the final allocation decision rest with Marlowe/Amann.  Amann may be the showrunner now but I sense that Marlowe (Milmar) have a monopoly on the writing of finales/important episodes with Bowman as director.  Unfortunately, in my opinion.

Dude, that was fast! I read about it at lunch time (amount about 40k) and now it's already fully funded. Good for them! And I'm hopeful they get to the "lost" episode of Spectrum with 30 days left.

On the topic of wardrobe: As long as they don't mimic Nathan's usual ComicCon attire, everything's fine with me. (Although last years sneakers were cool:-)

The perks indicate "delivery" for those granted access to the set or filming as extras expected in July, so I'm guessing Nathan may film these concurrent with any season 8 of Castle. Which should be easy to do.

The project's Twitter says they start filming on June 2nd.

For Nathan's back's sake, I hope they didn't have to do too many takes!  I thought it was only a matter of time before they pulled out the spinning move heh. Wonder how much of these fun goal videos are improv.  Funny stuff from both.  Not a line of dialogue from Nathan yet he's cracking me up.  I'm more a fan of dry humour than physical comedy but it works here for me.  (Alan isn't a small guy but Seth Green looked tiny next to him in the video. And Nathan would be taller still!)

Have to say, this crowdfunding campaign has gone beyond my expectations.  It's really quite impressive the amount they've raised in such a short period of time.  I hope this helps lead to good things for them in their careers outside of the webseries.  Now they've got the hard bit ahead of them: to deliver!

That teaser was pretty funny stuff.  The concept of boundaries really is lost on some fans, unfortunately.  But good as comedy fodder!

I spotted that Castle aka Jack Moore photo too.  Reminded me of the Cosmo cover Castle was on.  That was the kind of fun Castle the author barely haves anymore.

Alan's character scribbling his autograph all over Nathan's character's face was a funny touch.

Sorta following from the topic of how insane the Nathan Fillion/Alan Tudyk Indiegogo campaign has become...

Seamus Dever *also* has an Indiegogo project in the works, called "The Extraordinary Farewell":

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-extraordinary-farewell/x/10129529

It's a movie to be filmed (this summer, I believe) about a magician (Dever) and a reporter and her son, and what sounds like the culmination of a Faustian bargain that the magician made many years ago.  I tossed a few bucks at it and hope that it gets made (they have three or four more weeks left, and they've raised about half of their goal thus far). Seamus is posting updates once or twice a week, which is pretty fun (:

ETA: Or, y'know, I could post a FUNCTIONAL link.  Sigh.

Duct taped Nathan reminded duct taped Castle from S2.  I wouldn't mind seeing a domestic scene where Beckett helps Castle out with his weird experimenting for "research".  I suppose the recent breaking zip ties with their bum was something along those lines heh.

Nathan and Alan do seem like quite a comedic duo in these thank you videos.  The dogs, the cushion on head, the duct tape seemed like such a random funny combo lol.

The last Goooooal video.  Heh, those who watched Firefly will get the joke.

Not only is it amazing that they raised over $3m for Con Man, but it's wonderful that they raised $100,000 for charity:water this year.

I was surprised to read these actors actually do get tipsy on this show. (There are those behind the scenes who make sure the actors don't overdo things or to be there for any issues that arise.)

So I wonder if NF will be a funny drunk...

Link to comment

He looks sinister there, if he can have a drink too on set then it's a even better day's work.

I noticed that Stana Katic has a movie going 'this spring'. Any idea what it is or anything about it?

I heard that too and looked in the most likely places I thought might surely know something more but they don't mention anything.  May be she's doing this with her own production company although the site doesn't give any clues.
