S04.E08: Witch of the Week

I don't understand how Deborah and Ava only made up a couple of weeks ago considering how old DJ's baby was in the previous episode? Nor why Deborah would be recording a "Leap Day" bit - or is this season set in early 2024?

I was interested in the discussion of topical jokes about the day's news in the opening monologue, because I just couldn't picture Deborah doing those and I had wondered whether that was supposed to happen in her show or not.

Stephen Colbert records his Friday show on Thursday (or at least he used to when I used to watch it), so recording the day before isn't that wild an idea. (I don't know whether any other late night shows do / have done the same.)

John Oliver records his Sunday night show Saturday afternoon as well but it's weekly.

Damn.  I'm glad Deborah and Ava are back and at #1 but how long will it last since Ava has already figured out that Deborah is responsible for getting Winnie fired.  Deborah's nonchalant reaction certainly didn't help. The whole situation sucks.  Winnie was their biggest supporter even when the two were fighting.

It also highlights the complicated relationship Deborah has with women in general.  On the other side there's the Mayor Jo stuff, which was great.   Instead of taking the cheap shot at her friend, Deborah put her on and let her tell her side of things and let her own the joke. Deborah had to rise to the top of the business by being "one of the guys" and getting to those echelons usually required playing to the men and stepping over other women to get that spot.  But now Deborah is in a place in her career where she needs women as her audience and that's where Ava has helped her.  But now with the whole Winnie thing and being queen of late night, the Deborah of old is resurfacing.

Something tells me Checkov's email is gonna go viral at exactly the wrong time.

This used to be true for most of the late night shows but I think they've all stopped airing new shows on Fridays.  They air a recent rerun instead.

Was she?  I think her goal was to ensure the show was a success because that is her job, but I never got the impression that she personally cared one way or the other about Deborah or Ava.  Like when she sent Deborah to the cardiologist when Deborah was having an episode before the first show, I think she made the comment she wanted to ensure she wasn't getting a lemon with Deborah.

Even though Deborah explicitly referred to Mayor Jo as the episode’s title, there are really a lot of Witches of the Week this episode - Mayor Jo, Ava’s mom (to Ava), Winnie (to Deborah) and finally, Deborah (to Winnie). Nice full circle there.

I agree, and there’s really no reason to care personally about Deborah and Ava one way or another. She’s their boss, and her job is to ensure the show is a success. She is not their friend, nor should she be.

This goes back to Deborah being used to being her own boss her entire life. She never needed to answer for anyone. And anyone who gets in the way gets canned.

Although I must say Bob’s reaction of immediately firing Winnie seems so impulsive. Why not just tell Winnie to table the spinoff idea for now and let Deborah just do her thing? The firing just seems so drastic.

I am reminded of a joke that Deborah did in her stand-up set, S2 I think, where she said:

”To be a feminist, they say you should care about women. What if I only care about one woman? ME!!!!”

It shouldn't be Deborah's responsibility to come up with a spinoff idea though. If anyone's, it's Ava's, so I don't know why Winnie keeps bugging Deborah about it. And if Winne has already lined up Anthony Anderson to host that pretty much limits what kind of spinoff they can have. I completely understand Deborah's frustration here. She should be focused on making her own show as good as it can be in these early stages, not focused on some secondary show she won't be part of.

And I hate that they've created yet another volatile situation between Deborah and Ava. Enough already.

Did they release 2 episodes this week or did I miss one last week?

Doesn't make sense to me either. There is development teams for this kind of thing. Once the show is approves, they go to the agents/managers and work it out and then the talent takes a look. Unless Deborah is part of the development team (which was not indicated) then this is crossing some production boundaries.

I don't think the issue with Winnie is the nagging, I think it is Winnie's rude and condescending personality that upset Deborah. Deborah can make those demands now that she is number one, but these things can turn on a dime pretty quick in Hollywood.

Personally, I don't think Deborah is responsible for getting Winnie fired.  She certainly wasn't trying for that.  She was annoyed at the constant nagging about the spin-off, and asked Bob to get Winnie to back off.   We have no idea what happened between Bob and Winnie - it's possible Bob said "hey Winnie, back off on the spin off for a while" and Winnie blew up at Bob.  It's possible this was a "final straw" issue between Bob and Winnie.  We really have no idea.  But from what we did see, Deborah wasn't gunning for Bob to fire Winnie, not at all.  She realizes she's connected to it, but I don't think it's her fault.

Yeah, can't we have them just doing great work together for at least 2 episodes in a row?

I liked the return of Ava's mom, and I'm feeling a little bad for Jimmy.
