Do kids that age really act that way IRL in school? Holy hell, so no wonder no one wants to be a teacher anymore.

They did 35 years ago. Mine weren't in uniform skirts and ties to throw off expectations. Middle schools with aggressive girls who are often bigger than the boys being the worst.

When the victim's best friend went from just hitting and knocking down to the post UFC/MMA era where fighters start stomping on someone on the ground, I was expecting the two detectives who sat by as just a school case might have found themselves with a secondary case. That they didn't show her kicking his abdomen my thought was she was stomping his head.

Rude and entitled teenagers with overwhelmed teachers. Not my favorite episode. UGH.

Calling someone out (emojis or not) on social media is a shitty thing to do, Katie.

DI Luke Bascombe’s son — Adam knows about red/blue pills but he has no clue about its connection to The Matrix🙄

The Bascombe/Ryan foot chase scene is hilarious because obviously both of them couldn’t run on full speed, or else the camera guy won’t be able to catch-up. 😆

The school atmosphere was so bad and I was wondering, do we think it was supposed to be the usual? OR was everyone reeling from Katie's death?   The kids were so disrespectful to the adults and to each other. The teachers were shouting, or disengaged like Mr Malik, or  TOO nice/sweet like the lady who was taking them around.  It was awful.

The only thing that seemed out of line to my experience was how far Katie's friend went when stomping Jamie's friend with that crime being written off.

I guess part of the reason for showing it was that the girl was bigger than the boy.

WHY, when the black girl was beating Jamie's friend Ryan and screamed "You killed my friend," did no one ask her why she said that to him?  I thought she was accusing Ryan because he was the killer and faked the video to make it look like Jamie.  In any case, someone should have questioned her.

The real time format made it impossible. DI Bascombe's son was used for the data dump of the online bulling being the motive.

She still didn’t deserve to be stabbed to death over it.

The cruel irony of the cops assuring Katie’s friend that she wouldn’t be overshadowed by her killer…and yet that’s exactly what happens.

Completely agree with all of this. It didn't sit well with me that it was framed as Katie "bullying" Jamie because, even if in the end he is convicted of the crime (not a spoiler), that alone is gonna make it so that some people will still believe Katie somehow brought it on herself, and the entire message that this show is trying to send will be diluted.

I think this is a problem most of these shows that try to shed a light on the problem of violence against women and girls have. It's probably not intentional, but they always end up showing so much of the point of view of the perpetrator to the point of humanizing him and making it seem like "Oh this poor guy, he just lost control because he was made to feel bad about himself," and that does nothing to address the issue of WHY so many men end up murdering women. It's not an issue of the individual, it's an issue of a society that always ends up excusing their actions because their experiences and feelings are deemed more important than those of the innocent women that are killed. Notice how we haven't gotten a single glimpse of Katie's parents but we have witnessed extensively the plight of the Miller family. I was thinking the same thing DS Frank said in this episode about no one remembering Katie already since the previous ep, but having her say it while the actual storytelling does the complete opposite just felt to me like they were paying lip service so that no one could criticize show for doing exactly that.

I was thinking the same thing! The kids were all horrible, so disrespectful and bratty. I'd be so stressed out if I were a teacher at that school. Sheesh.

It's been a long time since I was a substitute teacher but back in the '90s, when I was first hired, I said I would do elementary school and middle school but I wouldn't do high school. I was (frankly, still am) small and young-looking, I figured high school it would be impossible to impose authority, looking like that. The regular teachers told me, actually middle school is worse. They were right. The kids are all so trapped in their own smelly, erupting, unattractive bodies, all so miserable and hyper-aware of themselves and each other and their hormones are going crazy.* I remember (admittedly whoever scheduled me for this was an idiot) tiny me having to lead a shop class. It was all boys and they all towered over me. I wasn't afraid, I had no problem raising my voice but it took them forever to calm down once they thought they'd smelled blood.

That said, no one said to me "Shut up, miss." I would've snatched them bald-headed if they had. I was shocked that teacher allowed it but I guess if you're there week after week, it grinds you down.

*And part of me wonders if this isn't one reason they're doing the single-take approach--because it's claustrophobic the way middle school is claustrophobic, you can't escape with cuts and clever edits. You're just THERE for the hour.
