"Mark, how are you different from these other guys."
"I'm not gonna beat her to death."

Well, that's a bit of a low bar. Didn't realize he had drug issues himself, but still, he seems like a good one. I guess he's turned things around. I hope.

Yeah, when he said that, I just about choked.  I hope he is clean now..

I have never known any drug addicts, but I know three guys who used to be alcoholics who have now been sober for 20+ years and still going strong... so I know it's possible if you have strong motivation.

Hopefully he wasn’t hooked on opioids. The relapse rate is extremely high.

Mine was COVID confirmed by two tests.  I never lost appetite - my Mom and my friend who both got it from me, unfortunately, did.  I strongly believe in the magic of chicken soup so that's what we made and ate - good thing Cornish hens come in twos, first we used one, then the other.  Also good thing that my Mom didn't start feeling bad until I started to feel better, we only really overlapped for one day when we were both sick.  And I was only really badly off for three days, Mom for two days, otherwise it was more nuisance symptoms than anything really bad.

There was NO WAY I could cook! The very thought of it was overwhelming. I did manage to microwave some soup one day. I was dying for something fresh after all that toast so one day I managed to eat some applesauce. I was flat out for about ten days. And of course it was all over the holidays.

Ugh, sorry to hear that.  Yeah, last several years either my Mom or I or both would get sick over the holidays.  Last year it was whatever stomach virus was going around Massachusetts, only a couple days but still.  Before that it was mild respiratory symptoms for a couple years.. hopefully this year was the last time it happened and next year we will have a really fun holiday week!

Oh God, The Cough! Mine hung on for two full weeks. Nightmare. I hope you're feeling better now!

I lost my voice for a couple weeks, too. Right when I went back to work, my boss was out for a week because his son was born. Someone called me about something but wasn't specific in her voicemail and I asked her to email me because I really couldn't talk on the phone. I ended up forwarding the email to my old boss (who had moved departments not long before) because I didn't know the answer to her question, and I swear he read the email thread and immediately picked up the phone to call me and see how bad I sounded. 😄 It was years ago, actually, so I'm good. I actually have only had one real cold in the past few years, and it was last February, I think. (Hope I don't jinx myself saying that.)

She is 19 but looks 30 and her weight is not helping...

Seriously, I didn't think it was her daughter until she said her name when they were getting in the car.

Re bingo cards:  no travel scenes as she lives close by. I wonder if that is something also helpful for her success. She didn’t have to uproot herself.

On the other hand, it can be easier to change one's habits if your old environment was full of enablers and/or factors driving you to eat.  Here she had to boot her 'eating buddy' all by herself instead of physically moving away from him.  That takes more guts... though if she is capable of being decisive in this aspect, she can also apply the same decisiveness to her diet.

I haven't had a soda in years. I do occasionally enjoy a spiked seltzer or a beer, but can't manage more than one or two.

I keep small cans of ginger ale and Coke in my fridge; I treat them like medicine (Coke for the caffeine when I have a migraine, and it actually helps settle my stomach a bit). I keep them on the bottom of the door, where I can't see them without bending over, so I'm not tempted.
