S01.E05: Presents and Clear Danger

Recommended Posts

This show is funny, but this episode really got me. I lost one of my grandfathers to Alzheimers, one of my grandmothers died with dementia, and one of my aunts has just been moved into a care home this summer because she has beginning stages of dementia. This disease is so cruel and this episode just brought out all the feelings of sadness for the people I have lost to it, sometimes even when they are still living. I loved seeing Charles deal so kindly with Gladys and good on the show for showing there are moments to connect along with the hard moments.

I liked that the caregiver gave Charles a reality check on his plan to spring Guys and Dolls on Gladys. I'm glad the writers didn't go for the easy magic solution.

I usher for a local theater and met a 90 yo lady who came to a performance of Brigadoon with her daughter who brought her because the mom had directed the play many years ago. They both said it brought her back to her life.

I love the friendship between Flo Jo and Ginny.

"Flo Jo, the Wordle is "CLAMP." Let's get going!" Something about Struthers' delivery here just made me howl.

ETA: I really like this cast. Everybody's bringing their A game, I think. I also liked that the caregiver offered Charles a dose of reality without demeaning him or failing to recognize both his empathy and his pain. I thought Susan Ruttan in particular did a lovely job -- she's underrated both as a comic and a dramatic actress.
