The View: Week of 11/11/2024

Whoopi, Joy, Sunny, and Ana live in rarified bubbles. Sara and Alyssa do not. Sara especially is the only one to live a somewhat normal life. 

 

It's Sara and Alyssa who live in a rarified bubble.  Sunny is having a hard time and I understand but it will make for interesting conversations in the View.  Alyssa will try to find something good in the Trump administration and knock Democratics down.   Whoopie and Joy is thinking here we go again with Trump and are worried what disaster he will be bringing to this country.     I love Ana she is great she does not live in a rarified bubble.

But Whoopi is a 69-year-old "working woman who has to work."  Surely, she can plainly see the suffering of the working-class American from the balcony of her Italian villa.  Or maybe from a stadium hosting her new Women's Sports Network. 

Or possibly in the vineyards where they cultivate the grapes for her prosecco brand.  Or maybe from a Broadway stage where she produces and stars in (for-profit) productions.  Or maybe from the demo of readers who buy her pearls of wisdom offerings on the written and digital page. 

Or lastly and most importantly she can see the plight of the working-class through the haze of her cannabis business.  Yes, poor "has to work" but not really, Whoopi.

They all live in a rarified bubble, saying Anna doesn't is just plain wrong, what with all of her name dropping every 5 minutes and how she has such & such in her phone. 

Sunny needs to stop bringing race into everything as I'm sure it puts people off listening to her as they know that's what she will blame almost every time. It's as bad as hearing trumpers blame the president for everything that is wrong in their life, it's ridiculous.

I was a little confused by the Charlotte Russe story. Did the bakery refuse to make the Charlotte Russe or make excuses why they couldn't make them? And was it specifically because they were meant for Whoopi? If she didn't order them herself, how would the bakery know, unless whoever ordered them said who they were for? They aren't like a birthday cake where the name of the person might be on it. Based on Whoopi's story, it seemed that then someone else ordered them and they got made. 

Unless the bakery has very dim people working for it, it seems to me that just having someone else order a specialty item wouldn't fool anyone about who it is for, after the first attempt. So, if they have something against Whoopi personally, just having someone else order the Charlotte Russe wouldn't have worked. Maybe the bakery just wanted to screw with her. Or maybe they did have issues with their ovens. More to that story, I'm sure.

There's a Charlotte Russe dessert and also a Charlotte Russe clothing chain.  Whoopie said she wouldn't name the place (presumably a bakery) where the desserts were ordered, but she may have gotten the clothing chain blackballed by a lot of customers who will confuse the store with the dessert.

The dessert has become an issue - Bakery denies Whoopi Goldberg's speculation it didn't make birthday order over political views - Owner says she didn't want to commit to making a big order due to equipment problems. She didn't want to tell then she would make them but then have to cancel, but she made desserts for the store which someone picked up for the show on Wednesday. Clearly, Whoopi felt it was a personal slight regardless, which is why she decided to share that with the audience. So, although she said she wouldn't name the business, she gave enough info that anyone could figure it out, and some people will choose not to buy things from them, so that will show the bakery owner who has the power, I guess.

I'll bet Brian had no idea Whoopi was going to call out that bakery.  If she's wrong about what she said, the show and ABC/Disney could be sued, not just Whoopi.  I'll bet the View lawyers are working overtime on this.

The whole thing still seems a little weird. I assume the baker means she isn’t taking orders because she can’t depend day to day on the equipment working?  Sounds like a questionable way to run a business.

I’m guessing former Fed prosecutor Sunny’s head is exploding.

Whoopi who still complains how she was cancelled for something she didn't did say has a lot of nerve accusing this baker of something that she has no proof of.  I'm going to believe the baker's own words before I believe Whoopi's assumption.

She used to have her birthday cake made by Sylvia Weinstock Bakery.  I remember Whoopi bringing her out with the cake on her birthday.  Sylvia passed away a few years ago.

The real scandal is her cake from (I believe) last year was purchased from a NYC bakery Ruby et Violette which is owned by Rebekah Mercer a member of the ultra-conservative Mercer Family. 

They are huge donors to Trump and the R party.  The Mercer Foundation funds conservative causes.  Her billionaire father had a stake in Breitbart (remember him?) which he sold to his daughters.  She also co-founded PARLER which is a (was) a conservative site.

So, this little Staten Island bakery has nothing on Whoopi's previous baker of choice, politically speaking anyway.

Sunny keeps repeating that undocumented immigrants don't commit crimes more than legal people, but she's ignoring the point - there's no way to know or at least have a good idea that any given person is not a criminal if they enter without undergoing any kind of investigation. That many people are law abiding is just luck, because we have no idea what kind of people they are if no one has even talked to them before they enter the country.  

How are undocumented workers paying taxes and Social Security? They wouldn't have Tax ID numbers, would they? Those are government issued and used to file the required forms. Are they using stolen or fake numbers? 

The undocumented worker issue won't change until those that hire them stop.  I will know the country is serious when THAT is handled.  Scapegoating the folks looking for a better life is silly and dangerous.  The EMPLOYER is the one that is the bigger issue.  Maybe people need to be taught to reframe this issue.

Things will be changing for a lot of people.  Things they didn't expect when they cast their vote. 🤷‍♀️

Some places do a similar thing by arresting the people who solicit prostitutes and putting their names in the paper. 

It seems possible to identify larger companies that hire undocumented workers, but the people who hire individuals like gardeners or nannies, etc. would be harder to identify, because they probably pay in cash and don't file any tax forms for their employees. It would take a lot of effort to seek them out. However, maybe some peer pressure could be brought to bear on them to stop hiring this way.

Well one of them is the past & future president who couldn't give a fuck about the people hiring them, that wouldn't fit the narrative of it being the Dems fault.

I am less concerned about the nanny or gardener.  It is the big business that needs to have giant consequences.  As in fines that are actually meaningful, possibly losing the business, whathaveyou.  But they are protected by their cronies.  

The View will have some interesting conversations in the next four years.

That's a bit misleading.  The nanny, the gardener and the aides who take care of the elderly are part of a larger network.  Just because you see one nanny in a residence does not mean she just happened to answer an ad.  They usually come from recruiting businesses who, like the large factories et al have thousands of prospective hires on their roster.

The example of large concentrations of Haitian refugees settling in one city is similar to the nanny, gardener, or the aide.  They're just less noticeable working as lone employees or in small groups. 

When I had to hire a live-in housekeeper for my parents, I found each agency had a specific group of immigrants from certain parts of the world.  Some were strictly from Ghana.  Some came from Ukraine, Georgia Russia, Poland.  It's a huge underground industry which operates in plain sight.  I finally found a reputable agency who only recruited those with visas.  The per hour amount doubled but you know that's the difference between legal vs non-legal, lol.

I think what she meant was that she can't take large orders in advance since their equipment has been having issues and they don't know how much they'll be able to make day to day.  So someone from the show probably called in the morning before the show about the order and since the boiler (broiler?) was working that day, they were able to make the cakes and freeze them until the next day, but they couldn't guarantee that that would have been possible a month in advance.  While I agree that they need to fix their equipment, such things are costly and time consuming, so it might not be in the budget right now.

Okay, so I'm in the middle of watching the interview Sunny did with Matt Murphy about the Menendez brothers.  Why don't they do this as a segment on the actual show, instead of just the Youtube channel?  It's way better than the fluff interviews they usually do.

I was just about to come in and mention this! It was such a good interview, and Matt did a good job of explaining why getting rid of Life Without Parole (LWOP) is a bad idea. I just plain love him. He has a very soothing voice.
