WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 9:32-10:01 p.m. EDT

Dan gets asked to write an article for a Hardware magazine, making Ben long for his days as a writer. Meanwhile, Jackie inserts herself into Louise's run for the school board when her retirement leads to too much free time.

"I gave up the restaurant to be with Neville" -- Yeah, which was stupid, and now you've figured that out.  But Jackie as Louise's campaign helper (or, you know, "Chief Communications Officer") could turn into an amusing train wreck depending on how they proceed with this after Jackie's disastrous debut.

However niche, this hardware magazine of Dan's buddy is an actual printed publication, so how can someone keeping one of those afloat today be so stupid as to just ask his friend, rather than doing his homework and asking Dan to connect him with Ben about writing this article?  I know, I know, why am I looking for logic?

"I did help him pay his mortgage and make him a partner in my business, so I guess I had this coming" as Ben's response to Darlene asking him to help Dan write an article he's in no way qualified to write was a refreshing acknowledgment, but then I was pissed for a while by how Dan was treating Ben.  In the end, Dan submitting Ben's article and Ben getting a monthly article out of it eased my fury a bit; I hope this gives Ben a boost.

Maybe Ben will eventually take over the magazine and Dan will run, but not  own (we all know he should not own anything!) the hardware store. Give them a win…please!

Every episode Jackie turns into even more of a cartoon character. And they keep destroying Dan, as well. They’re making him act like a simpleton.

Katey Sagal is great, but her Louise is always miserable and sighing. She sad sacks every episode she’s in with her total exasperation with the Connors antics. Of course, who can blame her? But she never gets to be fun. And when she’s supposed to be flirting with Dan, it’s not even a little bit convincing.

And why I am Also overthinking this terrible show? Why do I keep watching? Lmao I’m waiting for Ben to wake up and get the hell away from these people.

The Connors from Roseanne’s run (excluding the later years) were intelligent, witty, flawed, but had a lot of heart. This crew? I can’t stand them. I’ve been hate watching this entire time.

I keep wondering what is wrong with John Goodman.  He's supposed to be a good actor.  Here he's stiff and annoying.  I just watched one episode of the new season of his Disney animated show, Monsters at Work, and he sounds like his normal self.

I think the writing on this show is terrible now. I can't remember the specific beats in this episode but there are so many times that I can imagine the words on the page as the actors say them, complete with "wait for laugh." There is nothing natural about the way these people communicate and, as @Pi237 observed, the heart has been sucked out of these characters.

Loved this episode!! it was hilarious although I have to admit Louise's campaign was a disaster with Jackie being there (not her speech, but you know in general) I didn't really like that at all because Jackie was never really was a favorite of mine still isn't, but I guess I could understand why she was there at the same time and honestly I was worried about them working together again because like Louise said they always end up fighting with each other and I didn't blame Louise for firing Jackie. I honestly don't know how I feel about Jackie and Louise working together although I know Louise is going to need some help.

Jackie and Dan were my favorites in the old show. I feel like this show has ruined them both, especially Jackie. I did like the scenes with Dan and Ben, but didn't like anything with Jackie in it. She needs to get some hobbies or volunteer somewhere or something.

I agree and the acting is so stilted! They used to be a lot better actors I feel.

Yeah, I like the idea of Louise running for the school board, but...yes, she might need/want to look elsewhere for a campaign manager :p. I liked how Louise tried to smooth over all the random, strange accusations Jackie kept trying to throw out about her opponent.

Yes I agree she definitely should look outside her family for help and I liked that as well her trying to smooth things over because she was right Jackie was being ridiculous with her accusations.

I think the writing is the major culprit, but yes, the characters have become horrible (and badly acted), and Jackie is the worst.

How anyone with half a brain cell would trust her with a cactus, let alone answering emails, is beyond me.

Louise doesn't come across as particularly sad to me. I mean, I think she should be, but... Mildly annoyed, maybe. As in, I ain't got time for your sh... enanigans.

It's all so deeply unfunny.

I did like Dan's "You're a damn good failed writer".

Whatever became of Darlene's interest in writing?
