S11.E05: Come on Eileen

So the cliffhanger at the end of the previous episode made it seem like Fraser and Barbie were going to butt heads again but she says she's spoiled and used to getting her way but she won't challenge his authority any more.

Fraser is hopeful and does recognize that she's a great stew, especially in service.

Of course at the end, when Fraser awards second stew to Xandi, who wants to fly under the radar, Barbie's glare gave away the game.  You didn't have to see her saying "in my mind, I'm the real Second Stew."

Barbie wants to eventually convert to judaism but is she talking about the religion or adopting the culture?  One trip to Jerusalem did all that, give her the epiphany to change one's cultural identity?

There was a time when some celebrities were dabbling with some Jewish mysticism.  I forget what it was called but supposedly Madonna was into it and got all her trendy friends to get into it too, you know kind of like how young actors used to feign interest in Scientology to get cast in Tom Cruise movies.

Otherwise, it just seems odd to talk about adopting a foreign culture like one might try on a shirt or something.

Jared is easily set off, like he couldn't talk to his daughter at the appointed time so he gets drunk and is freaking out about not having cell service.  Kerry is trying to be supportive, says if after this next charter, he can't deal, he'd understand if he had to leave.

Meanwhile, Ben is looking at Jared having problems ordering towels and smirking, because he thinks it gets him closer to taking over.

Cat doesn't give a fuck about folding the towels and bed sheets a certain way.  But she doesn't care about actually cleaning the cabins either.  So her problems fitting in may become moot soon enough.

The preference sheet had some more fraud, another theme party and another guest with very particular demands.

Why not get guests pretending that they're Van Halen and demanding M&Ms but not brown ones?  But hey they can show a few scenes next episode of the demanding guest making the crew curse her out.

What happened in the bedroom when Eileen either fell or broke something and some crew members went rushing in? I missed this part. She is a dangerous drunk.

Some kind of divider wall that was glass tiles/bricks fell down.  I thought it was odd we didn't see them telling the Captain or more follow up on cleaning it up and fixing it.

I don't understand Cat's fixation on not having any bff's immediately.  They've been together, what?  A week?  Only Barbie has been kind of mean to her.  Everyone else seems to be fine with her.  I guess it's leftover trauma from the foster family situation but it seems strange to me.

I'm so sick of trashy guests 😩

I think the problem is that the franchise has been so diluted by all the spin-offs plus the pandemic that now they have to recruit guests who clearly have no business being anywhere near a luxury yacht. We keep getting a bunch of low class yahoos who try to act like they belong there when clearly the nicest place they've ever stayed at was a Best Western.

I'm of two minds about that. On the one hand it does make sense to reward Xandi who has kept her head down and done a great job and isn't giving her boss attitude. On the other hand Xandi doesn't really want the position and it's going to cause tension between her and Barbie, which Fraser must surely realize.

I am not a tea-totaler, I have been drunk many times in my younger days.  As a 50-something now, I have an occasional cocktail, and honestly,  very well made Mai Tai or French martini gets me a little loopy.  I can’t remember the last time I ordered/finished 2 drinks over the course of an evening out with friends.  I am just blown away by the depth of plastered some of these guests can get to!  Are they technically alcoholics, so their tolerance is just sky high?  How are people like Eileen not dead from alcohol poisoning? Or cirrhosis?  (Or from someone just murdering her from her mean drunkenness?).  And Tina and the ‘husbros’  were equally repulsive.

This drunk woman, she was sloppy and slurring 24x7.  Awful, and I hope she sees her true self when watching this back. Not cute or fun. The drunk lady needs rehab (I am a recovering alcoholic who has been in rehab). She’s not just having fun on vacation. She’s got a serious problem and, having been through what I’ve been through, I see it and it should not be on tv. Am I diagnosing?  Well, yes. She’s like so many of us addicts. I can pick us out anywhere. I wish I couldn’t.
Was she part of the swimming group?  She should not have been.
And then Jerrod (is that the bosun’s name?). He’s also slurring, but I think that’s just how he is.  He comes off as not smart, but I think he’s just so beaten down.   He needs to concentrate on his mental health.

I would think Barbie would realize that Xandi, as a former chief stew, has more experience than she does and would be a great fit for second stew.  Xandi is happy taking on housekeeping, but she has the expertise to take over for Fraser when he is doing a beach picnic or vice versa. She also hasn't displayed the negative attitude that Barbie has.  If a stew is constantly challenging the chief stew, I wouldn't think that person would earn a higher rank. I think Barbie should be happy she is getting to do a lot of service and less housekeeping because Xandi is fine with it.

I think this is the first time I have seen the stews preparing the cabins so meticulously.  They even had a meeting to decide how the tissue should come out of the box!

I don't get it either. They start drinking the minute they step on board and don't stop until they go to bed that night. I would have passed out long before dinnertime. I don't know how anyone can drink that much but we see it week after week.

They could be parked in some generic bar and they wouldn't know the difference.

Time on a luxury yacht, in a very beautiful setting, is wasted on them.

But this is the kind of guests they want on the show, because when they can't think of better things to put on TV, they can always get "good TV" by putting on people acting out while drunk.

It's really a double standard, when Hannah on BDM got in trouble for having some drugs which supposedly could make people impaired when performing duties which involve safety.

But the crew is going out every couple of days and getting absolutely plastered and then showing up the next morning, most of the time just cleaning the yacht.

Would be a good option if passengers and crew just smoked marijuana in places where it's legal instead.  But stoned people aren't likely to say dumb things or act out, like hook up with people, get into fights as often as drunk people.

Seems the whole franchise might be sputtering. Short of hitting an iceberg, how much more drama can they wring out of the same old antics?

It's suffering from being overdone.  Once producers have a successful show, they make every iteration of it ad naseum until viewers have fatigue.  I used to watch 90 Day Fiancé and had to quit because there were so many versions and it was hard to keep up and eventually lost all interest in it.  I'm still hanging in here with Below Deck, but judging from the lack of comments here, I think many have set sail for different shores.
