Yes, I miss him from the rotation of correspondents as hosts, because his guest host week last season was excellent, the best of all of the correspondents (well, poor Dulce only got one day so I can't properly compare her).  I don't blame him being upset at not being given the hosting gig and leaving, but I miss him being part of this.

Have I Got News For You also features Amber Ruffin, who I absolutely adore, but I have not found it to be as good of a show as I'd hoped. I watch it, but I kind of feel like they aren't trying very hard.

She's my favorite of the correspondent-as-host gang.  But, man, do I still miss Roy.

I’m sure you probably mean, you miss Roy as a correspondent on TDS, but if you’re not aware, he’s the host of a current events/comedy/panel show on CNN (and Max, the next day).

Probably appeals to a similar audience to The Daily Show, and there’s only one episode a week to keep up with.

The show is called Have I Got News for You. I don’t see a thread for it here but maybe it falls somewhere under the CNN umbrella.

I was hoping Roy Wood Jr. would be the next host, but Comedy Central wasn't willing to make a decision/commitment.

Comedy Central's loss was CNN's gain. I will second the recommendation of Have I Got News For You. The series has a very similar sensibility to The Daily Show. It also reminds me bit of Whose Line Is It Anyway or @Midnight/After Midnight, in that there is a host, there are games, there are points, but they aren't really keeping score and who wins doesn't actually matter.

That's a very old British show that I remember from well over 20 years ago & I see it's the same setup, hopefully they are allowed to say anything & be as acerbic as they were in the UK.

I've never watched the British version, but I would describe the American version as more snarky than acerbic.

I was torn on how to describe it but snarky sounds good, it was well over 20 years ago when I last watched it. They certainly weren't worried about upsetting anyone that's for sure.

Sounds like this version might be worth catching though.

Um, isn't this supposed to be the forum for The Daily Show?

Yeah, apparently you have to go to the Jon Stewart thread to get comments on the current show.

Apologies for my contribution to derailing this thread, I should have taken the Roy Wood Jr discussion to a different thread.

I don't know how you can be so out of it when The Daily Show is coming to do a piece on you and not know their deal. Even Jordan said it's getting hard to find people at rallies that don't know about him.

Granted, there's probably people who do know and take the bait because they think they can get one over on The Daily Show. I just couldn't tell where this woman was coming from.

Yep -- it's the latter. They always know, they just still want to get their "message" out and think it'll resonate louder than the show's antics.

Oooh, thanks for that info! I thought I couldn't watch it since I don't have CNN, but I do have Max!

Speaking of CNN, not sure how I felt about the John King segment last night. This show is supposed to satirize the media. It's fine if a mainstream media anchor comes as a guest or something, but it feels a little like playing along with them in a segment waters down the critique.

Who is everyone's money on for the permanent host gig if there actually is one and it actually does come from this rotation? I feel like Desi or Jordan (but I also feel like Jordan would already be the host if Jordan wanted to be the host, so I'm not sure on that one).

Just to be technically correct, which is the best kind of correct, and I know no one really cares, but consent-based siting (Secretary of Energy interview last night) doesn't mean you give people compensation for taking on nuclear waste. Consent based siting is really focused on the fuel when you take it out of the reactor. There's actually no law or rule about what consent-based siting is. What it is or should be is still being worked on.

I don't think you can make Jordan Klepper the host because someone has to go to Trump rallies. I really like Desi Lydia, but I also think Michael Costas could do well as the host.

I saw it as King sending himself up with all his maps while still delivering actual information the Compact.

Then I hope even more that Jordan Klepper is the host because maybe that would mean there will never be another Trump rally.

He was, but I think paying for a CNN-shared-segment is a little anethema to the show's functions.

That's the one I watched.

Fat Joe was excellent too, and there's a longer interview on youtube (I'm guessing). I'd heard him somewhere else I can't remember talking about the health costs but not in this depth.

I wish healthcare wasn't a partisan issue, and I like Joe is trying to be nonpartisan about it.

Jordan's latest show is on The Daily Show youtube.

I liked that Jordan totally admitted that he's sick of doing the rallies. Bringing some other perspectives was a good idea, and I liked how there was a few minutes of just him and the guests to see how they took it all in.

The guests were really good because they got Jordan's style of not arguing but also asked a lot of questions he might not have thought.

Good flip of the script to go to the Harris rally. I could have gone for more of that.

Dangle would totally purge litterbugs.

I was saying the same thing as Ronnie, that Garbage Island joke was the straw that made you vote for Harris? Whatever works, I guess?

If anything, the campaign is on the back foot again, less than a week to go. I suppose if it flips enough votes.

The women from the second segment in Pittsburgh from Jordan's latest special had him on their podcast to talk about their experiences and ask Jordan about rallies, talk about the people they met, etc. It's an hour, but it's a good companion piece to the special. I did get the impression that Jordan is worn out from all this. If anything, the monotony of it all must be grinding him down.

I'm glad Serwer said what he said last night about why people are leaving Trump rallies. It's not wise to look at that as a sign of lost support -- it's just fatigue of the same thing over and over. These are "season ticket holders," as Serwer says. Provides me no comfort  when those early departures keep getting touted as significant. I hope he has lost significant support, but people leaving rallies is not a data point.

Poor Jordan is so ready to stop going to rallies. I hope he gets to. (Of course, if they lose he'll then have to go to more Stop the Steal rallies.)

I'm assuming on CC the guest segment wasn't as long as on youtube, so I'd say to check it out. The woman gave the best analysis I've seen. Unfortunately, it boiled down to making sure every single person feels special about themselves and dudes are scared of everything. And that the president can just magically take care of everything all the time.

I'd like to see a movement for 2028 to bring back acting like adults.

I'm impressed by the optimism of the people who think there will be an actual election in 2028. King's don't need an election & that is exactly what he has become, he won't even need to change the constitution because he just ignores it anyway & for some reason his allies go along with anything he wants.

Tuesday night's LIVE special didn't turn up on Paramount+, which is the only way I get to watch TDS now.

Wha' happen'?

It’s not showing as an episode of the show, but as a “new movie”. I typed d-a-i into the search bar and it showed up as one of the suggestions. Same with Jordan Klepper’s rally special from a few days ago.

That said, I watched it live and I’d say it would take a certain type of fortitude to watch it at this point.

One more comment on the live election night show. As much as I feel Jon’s pain, I really didn’t understand his hostility towards the polls/pollsters. Haven’t they been telling us all along that the most likely scenario was what actually happened?

Link to comment

Not entirely. One outcome was this one - Trump wins by a small amount in each of the swing states. But the opposite was also true too. Then there was all the fawning over the 'blue dot' in Nebraska. All the polls were 48-48, around there.

A tight race favors more eyeballs tuning into the cable news shows. That's it. Polling really doesn't work anymore, or there needs to be some kind of paradigm shift in how polls are conducted.

I certainly don't advocate murder as a solution to any problem, but I'm confused why the media is so confused at the response from everyone. It's not appropriate to be sure, but I wasn't surprised either.

Kostas' response being 'don't cheer the murder; vote' was spot on. All those people who didn't vote probably have issues with healthcare like people who did vote. I needed an essential dental procedure, but I had to pay for most of it because it's considered 'cosmetic'.

I definitely prefer Jon's The Weekly Show to his Mondays on The Daily Show. On TWS he doesn't have the pressure of comedy (even though he just naturally inserts it from time to time), he's not delivering anyone else's writing while feeling like he has to punch it up with physical humor, and he gets to do a wonderful deep dive with incredibly intelligent guests. I still really like him -- maybe more than before as a political observer (anyone who's convinced he's drifted center is definitely not checking out TWS), but far less than before as a poitical satirist.

I'd like Klepper to take over, though it may be an impolitic choice if they're choosing strictly from the current rotation.

Klepper would be great and he truly needs to be rewarded after all the rallies he had to attend. How he survived that is a miracle!

As much as I really like all the current correspondents (except for Grace, but I know I'm in the minority there), Klepper would be my choice for permanent host as well.

I gotta say, I think I prefer the current rotation to picking a single permanent host. And re:Grace, I’m not sure if she’s not my favorite based on her actual skills, or because she seems to be getting the assignments I tend to think of as, well, dumb? Because she’s the new kid?  Now if she’s pitching and getting her own bits then that would help me decide.

Bringing this over from the Monday thread, since it seems more appropriate here.

The rotation of hosts is good because you're getting a variety of styles and guests. I do like the segments of bringing back the celebrity hosts for an op-ed segment, a la Lews Black. They could do that some more.

tbh, and I know this is hard, they could carve out an interesting position if they decided to lay off all the Trump nonsense and focused on other stories, like the New Jersey drones, etc. That's a production decision, but it would be refreshing.

I'm certainly not a comedy writer, but what's the new material? Trump says something outrageous. Ok. People in his circle range from buffoon to cartoon villain. Check. I know you can't avoid it entirely, but not being the main thrust could be interesting. Or, focusing on the second order effects could be interesting too. They did a great piece awhile back about 'all the jobs' that Trump made a deal with Carrier Global for, and then the show went to the town and talked to a hilarious woman about how bogus it was.

To be kind of satirical and snide, I would have a report on the price of eggs at the top of the show every week. Just once a week. Because that's why people didn't vote for Harris, right?

I'd have been happy if Roy had been given the hosting gig based on the guest host weeks they all did last season.  Of the remaining correspondents, I most enjoy Desi as host.  But I think they all do a good job - some of them better than they do as correspondents - so I like the rotation.

I haven't been in the mood to watch since the election, though, so right now it doesn't even matter to me who's doing what.
