S02.E01: Royalty

Finally a Season 2! With Gigi Hadid and um, that guy hosting. First up, a look fit for any royalty of your choosing.

Some of the designers might be promising.

I wish every interaction wasn't quite so scripted, but Netflix does like everything to be a perfect polished little soundbyte. You are not going to get Kentaro going on and on to Tim Gun about how he found a dead cat and put it in the ground and put his ear to the ground and heard the music of his collection here!

I watched season one and can’t remember one thing about it, it was three years ago. This is a very colorful cast of designers. I like Tan France and Gigi Hadid. Everyone is nice to each other. Impressed they got Donnatella Versace for a judge for this first episode.

Were the designs any good?  No clue, fashion is so different now so I’m going by what the experts are saying because to me everything is a costume. Just being honest here.

Deontre wins, kudo’s to the model for being able to walk basically wearing a sleeping bag. It’s odd how they say, ‘ and going home is….’ And you have to wait until the next episode to find out who.

Yeah that ending seemed designed to keep you binging...

I was primed to dislike Gigi Hadid, just because she's famous for being beautiful. But she did a pretty good job, I thought. Seemed down to earth and likable.

I really liked the ABBA inspired outfit!

Why did the woman who said she specifically designs for plus-size women get a skinny model?

That guy who came in wearing a kilt looked ridiculous. I don't have anything against guys in skirts, but that kilt was too short and didn't match his shirt at all. Guess that's his schtick.

It was so nice to see a stylist (can't remember his name) look classy instead of trashy. Remembering some stylist on one of the other similar shows who always looked like she randomly choose things from her closet in the dark.

They’ve changed some things up. Last season they began in teams, but this year they are doing individual designs. Taste levels are subjective, but some of the designs do not scream royalty to me in any manner.

I wasn't able to get into the first season partly because the endless informal chatter of the hosts threw me off (and it's still a lot), but this was good, I like these designers.  I favored James for the win with his gorgeous Bowie-esque design that looked so good on his model, and I also loved the shiny/glittery blue dress one of the designers sent out; Deonte's I didn't care for at all, and that 'puffer' was just a giant bed comforter.  I really hope the judges falling all over themselves to praise his hip hop streetwear doesn't become a weekly pattern.  But the worst was clearly the ill-fitting Nefertiti costume, which was too literal to be fashion.

I am enjoying Gigi Hadid paired with Tam France as hosts, but for god's sake woman, stand up straight! I found the concave chest to waist posture in her opening scenes really alarming.

Mean to send Usama, who was one of the more accomplished designers, home so soon when there was that frumpy yellow number by Courtney, Quaysean's lumpy gold Nefertiti outfit, and numerous others with lesser creations - including Deontre's hideous puffer coat and messy internal designs.

It's snappier than season one, which is good.  I like James, so far, and Amari.

I think anyone is free to make a new thread for each episode

@Straycat80 I put up a thread for epi 2, if you want to copy your comment over. Whoever watches the episode first can just put up the thread for it.

Ok thanks, didn’t know that.

Just watched Season 1 and started Season 2 immediately after.  I’m not feeling Gigi—-I didn’t think she added much to the critiques.  No idea why she’s annoying me. (Besides the way she says “button”) And “gorge.”

That giant puffer coat did not say Royalty to me. It said,”Take a nap.”

Agreed.  I kept hoping that he skipped the traditional kilt idea of no undies, because bend over once and he'd be sharing his world.

I thought gigantic puffer coats was done a couple of years ago. They were loving that, but calling out the other designer for having a familiar, mall looking dress. It's very subjective.

Excitement for Season 2 is through the roof, especially with Gigi Hadid and, well, that guy hosting. The first challenge is to create a look suitable for any chosen royalty. There's optimism about the designers, though some wish the interactions felt less scripted.

Netflix's penchant for perfection in polished soundbites is noted. Commenters express a desire for the raw, unscripted moments, reminiscent of Kentaro's unique storytelling about finding a dead cat and hearing the music of his collection, a sentiment that resonates with viewers.
