S05.E13: Daddy Cop

In the midst of a heatwave and a citywide blackout, Officer John Nolan and Aaron follow increasingly large leads after they discover criminals hiding at the station. While on duty, Officer Chen makes an alarming discovery after being called to a scene where a pungent smell has wreaked havoc. Meanwhile, Lucy and Harper scheme to get Tim out of his new job and into a more exciting position.

Was it supposed to be funny that the cops went into the deadly fentanyl cookhouse with zero protective gear, but Chen wore a full hazmat suit to clean Smitty’s trailer?

And was it accidental or on purpose that they ran a heatwave episode in January?

I wasn't sure if I would like the Lucy and Tim relationship as a couple, but I think they're developing it nicely. It's kinda cute the way they're each willing to make sacrifices for the other, even if it's done in secret or without the other person knowing in advance. And I'm glad they addressed the superior officer-subordinate officer issue.

For a moment, I thought they were going to kill off Celina, what with introducing her mother who thinks she works a desk job. That would've been a real shocker. But, no, she survived.

Yeah, this latest arc of the Lucy-and-Tim relationship was a lot like The Gift of the Magi. 
Hopefully they are leading up to some open sharing between them after probably another round or two of Secret Sacrifices for each other.

I like Lucy and Tim but the idea that they could just move various people into different jobs is ridiculous. Things like retirement take time to plan and you can't just ask a co-worker to retire. And what if any of those people didn't want to transfer to other departments, which also takes time. Celine is growing on me.

The full hazmat suit to clean Smitty’s trailer was funny in itself, but not as a contrast to the fentanyl cookhouse breach. There was nothing funny about it and the stupidity drove me crazy. I understand that they were worried about the child and did not want to wait, but they handled it like a Keystone Cops scene. Celina should have covered the kids mouth on the first scream, shutting the electricity to stop the blenders was  basic as well and at least using some piece of wet cloth to cover their faces and treat the blenders like a movement triggered bomb.

I was against it during all the buildup, but I do like the way they've handled it now that it's official.

The timing issue is indeed ridiculous, and I'm not clear on how they'd know who would go where. But my take on the retiree linchpin was more that Smitty (by way of Lucy) dangled a bait of a huge salary with less risk in front of her. Yeah, retirement does take some time and paperwork, but not that much if you don't mind waiting months to get your pension while the bureaucracy grinds it way through. (speaking as a recent retiree). Still, yes, the timing aspect didn't really work.

I loved the Daddy Cop song, I hope it comes up again.

Congratulations on your retirement! My husband is a retired police officer working full time again so I know how it goes. I just think if the person was already thinking about retirement they would know about their pension and insurance and would set a date that works for them regardless of Smitty. And transferring within different segments of police departments is based on budgets, who is next in line for promotions or transfer and it can take months. I realize this show is rarely accurate in police work though- this is a show that had rookie cops investigating drug kingpins and murders.

Thank you! You are obviously more familiar with these issues in the world of police - so I will definitely bow to your knowledge. It must be frustrating to watch shows get it wrong all the time (though even I know rookies don't investigate drug kingpins and murders)

Not so much for me but my husband rolls his eyes all the time. It drives him crazy to see rookie cops (last year) doing in-depth investigations in things and doing the work of detectives, narcotics officers and swat teams. They are doing a little better this year by promoting some of the staff from rookie. I keep reminding him that Nathan Fillion must be the star of the show regardless of what he would be doing in real life which is likely to still be on patrol.

I guess I’m in the minority here but I find it *incredibly audacious* that Lucy would meddle with Tim’s career behind his back.  Just because you’re doing something ostensibly good for your partner doesn’t justify being deceptive and sneaky.  If you don’t think you can trust your partner to engage in open communication with them, that’s not a good look.

True.  
Maybe Lucy having a lot of help and encouragement from fellow officers in this scheme will dilute the blame when it comes out? 
Or maybe Tim is fully aware of what’s happening behind the scenes and is going to let Lucy squirm until she feels the need to admit what she did and promise it will never happen again? 
Or they break up over it——but I’m not sure the writers or Fillion are willing to squander the fan base’s good will by ending ChenFord.

I am as well - but I saw it more as comedy than an attempt at reality. It might come back to bite her, or Tim might be grateful. Depends on the mood of the writer's room, I guess.

I really hate Chen and Bradford as a couple!  I understand that Tim was Chen's superior so one of them had to "move."  But I thought the whole point of Tim changing "jobs" was so he and Chen would be on the same schedule.  Now he's going to vice and working crazy hours so what was the point?  He's really going all out for Chen when just a year ago, he basically couldn't stand her.  I just don't see Bradford doing all this...seems completely out of character.  

Count me in on the stupidity of nobody gearing up before walking into a fentanyl cookhouse.  And why didn't Celina put the wet towel under the door and/or climb out the window?  

Nolan's house is the only place in LA with air conditioning?  Just another lame excuse to stick Bailey into scenes.

He's in Metro, not vice. I'm not sure what Metro is, but it seems kind of SWAT team-ish.

Totally agree about them walking into the cookhouse w/o masks, at the very least.

The explanation for Nolan's house is that he has a generator, so he still has power. For me it was kind of fun because it brought the whole gang into the house.

Metro is the citywide division that commands the specialist units. Like SWAT, K9 search, bomb squad, horse mounted and in Sergeant Bradford's case those sometimes uninformed and at other times plain clothes platoons which reinforce division areas like Mid- Wilshire. Having a USMC love LAPD divisions don't normally wear unit distinguishing uniform items like the USMC doesn't but the citywide divisions Metro and Traffic do wear shoulder patches. Should you see an officer on normal patrol with that patch you then know extra police are working in that area.
