Matthew is such an eeyore. I find him exhausting. And the problem is the actor, he has no spark whatsoever.

And is it just me, or does he seem incapable of sitting up straight in a chair? This may be more noticeable in the next episode, I binged watched and they're all running together. But at one point I was yelling at the screen for him to sit up straight.

he was not as much as the swinging vicar on Agatha Raisin.

I mean, you're not wrong :)

And its not helped that his every storyline is Matthew in sad circumstances. He's having a baby, but his lovely wife is DYING. He's rich but had NO IDEA his wealth was destroying the lives of the people. He tries to be nice to the squatting hippies and then has to help deliver a freaky outside intestines baby. He's just stopping by to see his ex alkie girlfriend, and there's a giant train disaster. His dad comes to visit, and is a total ass monkey to him, and then DIES.

He's got the name Matthew, he's rich and a lord and I completely expect him to die in a car wreck the very day Trixie has a baby.

🤣 True, but even in happy moments it's like his eyes are dead and his voice is sad. It's such a pity because on paper I love him for Trixie, but he's super miscast.

He was on Agatha Raisin? I have no recollection whatsoever.

At first, I read eeyore as eyesore, and was slightly flummoxed because, whatever else, Olly Rix is certainly conventionally attractive.

He's got the weight of the world on his shoulders...I remember that episode of The Crown where the Queen met with one of her titled subjects, who eventually renounced his title because he thought the idea of nobility was wrong. I wonder if they are planning something like that for Matthew.

I love Sr. MJ. Plus she is a fictional character so no logic need apply.

I love her too, and I like my fiction to be fairly logical, but I don't think the writer's treatment of sister MJ is any more illogical than lots of their other stories. Sister Monica Joan talks the way she does because she's from another generation and another class.  Her dementia has good days and bad, just like my father who continued to teach and sell wonderful art while some days unable to figure out how to work his thermostat.

Chummy found raising a baby and keeping house in an apartment in Poplar with no modern conveniences to be just too boring for words and had nothing to do with her time but make radish roses.   Nancy was entitled and dishonest at first and still  indulges  herself with too many stylish outfits.  Miss Higgins can seem like a autocratic fuss budget at times and Sister Veronica is a straight up liar.

We tend to still like them and the others make excuses for them so why not sister Monica Joan?  She may be my favorite.

she pretty clearly does understand how to play the "elderly" card when she is doing shit that she wants to do. She says mean things to people she doesn't like, she gets mad when her own flaws are brought up, she gleefully delights in indulging herself with treats. She lies at worst, and merrily fudges the truth at best and if she isn't treated with kid gloves, she spirals into self pity and depression until everyone is kissing her ass again. She's also attention seeking and yet if its not the exact type of attention she wants, she's dismissive and unkind. If she wasn't older and supposedly suffering from intermittent dementia, she'd get called out by more of the characters on the show for her unpleasant ways.

Sounds like half the elderly people I know.
