S13.E39: Thunderstruck

Recommended Posts

Maya, Zig, and Zoë  plan to attend a Degrassi dance, but get stranded at the Matlin house due to an unexpected storm. Meanwhile, Clare heads to NYC for an interview at Columbia and fears running into Eli, and Drew searches for missing Becky.

Technically this is episodes 39 and 40 aired as a one hour special but I didn't want to/didn't know how to deviate from the episode format.

Well, thank goodness I was spoiled by the goofs at TeenNick.com (who accidentally posted their review ahead of time) because if I hadn't been, I would probably be raging at this fanfic ridiculousness.

- The only plot I liked was Tristan and Miles'... and by liked, I mean, lost my damn mind because I've loved them since Paris. Their chemistry was so good and honestly, I haven't been this excited since Eli and Clare at the Frostival, whenever the heck that was.

I love that the writers, shockingly, took their time with them because it felt so natural. I was worried that one of them was going to back out, claiming it was simply payback for Maya, but not only did they address that, they addressed both of their issues that I think have been under the surface all this time (feelings of inadequacy, feeling unlovable, broken), which I thought helped legitimize it. Plus, Winston bringing up his sexuality, asking if he was gay or bi now is something I'm sure many were wondering, so I'm glad they acknowledged that but didn't have Miles confirm anything. I see a lot of great stories here, hopefully they'll keep them together long enough to explore them.

And I enjoyed them hanging out with Frankie and Winston (and that they skipped over Miles being a jerkass about it). I liked that they revealed that Yates tried to grope Winston, which is probably a start to Tristan's healing (seeing that he wasn't exactly "special"). Seeing Miles and Frankie fight over the TV was pretty fun, makes me want to see more siblings and sibling interactions on Degrassi. I really like the two of them together.

- Zig agreeing to go to the dance with Maya and Zoe was pretty dense on his part, though I think Grace blew it out of proportion. However, I'm glad the girls talked it out and will hopefully be good friends... for at least a full season.

- Clare and Eli... well, at least Eli was decent enough to keep his mouth shut until after her interview but I still wish he would disappear, taking Eclare with him. Honestly, I feel like he's only being so cool because he "knows" that once she gets into Columbia, there will be no long-distance drama and they can resume their "epic" romance, like that's the only problem in their relationship.

As for the pregnancy bomb... well, I cackled, only because I'd been spoiled for it. Unless they futz around with the timeline, Drew should be the father, right? Hence why they slapped him with Becky, so there'd be drama for that. Honestly, since when are Drew and Becky tight? They had to force it so hard in order to make it even begin to work. So stupid.

So anyway, soap opera silliness aside, I think the pregnancy might be a good story... it should deal with her religious upbringing; as much as she's evolved, I don't know that she would consider abortion... but then again, maybe she would. And that could create drama with her religious mother. And I know she had brain (?) cancer but is there a possibility that a pregnancy might encourage her cancer to come back again? I think that's for breast and ovarian cancers but I don't know, could it still happen?

The just did not give Clare a baby.

If we follow this right....

Spike had her baby
Manny aborted
Mia (has a kid)
Jenna + Liberty have had the kids, but put them up for adoption.
Dallas has his kid.

Ali had a pregnancy scare

So i think maybe we'll be seeing a Clare faces abortion storyline. And truthfully, I didn't see this coming at all. I thought they were going to have cancer come back.

Poor Tristan :( I know that Yates was a douche, but i just felt that they made him an uber pervy teacher and pushed it to the side. it was a bummer that's all we're going to get. Becky and Drew. Meh.

There hasn't been a character that's been part of the main cast when they were pregnant that's kept the baby since Spike.  Sure Mia and Dallas had kids (and they were older when they started) but that's easy to forget with Dallas and Mia went off to Paris to model leaving her poor child behind.

Are they going to use this as an excuse to keep Claire an extra semester?

I do think that was the best way I've seen a pregnancy announcement on TV.  The nurse telling her that she and the baby are just fine over the phone, I cracked up at that.

I like Tristan with Miles, so I hope that's going somewhere. I also like that Winston is starting to get tired of Miles' bullshit.

Drew is, basically, attracted to anyone and everyone at this point, it seems. It's hard for me to take any particular connection he makes seriously because he's kind of into everyone.

Alli and Dallas as the gatekeepers of wise relationship choices is a bit of a laugh, though. Neither of them have ever struck me as remotely credible in that department.

I admit I laughed when Clare knocked herself out on the pole. It was cheap humor and a ridiculous way to force the reunion with Eli, but I laughed anyway. I loved seeing her crumple and hit the ground with such a full-speed- ahead sweep. I think I'm becoming a fan of slapstick in my middle-aged-ness. I never thought that stuff was funny when I was younger.

Maya and Zoe with Miles and the schnapps? I dunno. I actually want to know more about Grace and I wish she was actually a more developed character, and not just trotted out like some adviser for Maya and Miles, with no actual life of her own or explanation about how she turned into the person who she is or how she feels about anything herself.

I guess it's good Maya and Zoe buried the hatchet, but I don't like that "stealing a boyfriend" (who clearly had agency and made his own choices) is equated with publishing unauthorized porn, and that there was supposedly nothing deeper than jealousy behind the animosity between them. Neither of them seem to ask why someone would or wouldn't choose to be with them, and just think the whole thing is a competition. But I'm tired of watching shows portray girls as hostile to each other, so I'm happy enough to let it go. I hope both of them get something else to do. This show barely passes the Bechdel Test.

I was glad the storm was not actually the cause of the drama, and the promos exaggerated most of it.

ETA: Oh yeah, Clare is pregnant. I don't know why that made me laugh, almost as much as the pole knock out. She hasn't been with anyone but Drew recently, right? So it's his. But I thought that was a while ago, and she'd've known she was pregnant by now, wouldn't she? I think of Clare as someone who very organizedly tracks her cycle and takes the Pill-- and Drew as the person who always has a condom in his pocket. I guess I was wrong. But if they didn't use any kind of protection, why was she not worried about this sooner? Why no morning after pill? It's not adding up.

Well, just like this season, the finale was half bad fanfic and half good stuff so I'll call it down the middle.

Protip: If any of the Degrassi writers are looking at this, or I guess any of the TPTB at TeenNick or MTV Canada, NO MORE YEAR-LONG SEASONS.

EClare Plot. Too bad I was spoiled for the ending, I think I would've gasped out loud. It was a nice surprise, but at this point I'm kind of sick of all the plot speedbumps thrown at EClare. And now we have the possible Clew baby in the way. I know season 14 will probably be the seniors' last hurrah so I can't help but feel this was unneeded. Otherwise, I liked them together here, and I'm like one of the last few who do, heh.

Triles Plot. Honestly, I liked Chewy and Frankie here more than the two boys. Chewy was the MVP of this plot, IMO. He was in the background so much during this season and this plot along with the trial really made him shine for me. I liked how non-judgmental he was towards Miles's sexuality and he was just completely over Miles's drama and didn't want to see anyone else dragged down. Frankie was good here too, I buy her as an annoying little sister and is who also completely over Miles.

Didn't not miss Chewy saying Pervy Teacher almost groped him. I wish they would've followed up on that more, but it was just needed to throw the cold water of reality on Tristan. He still bugged me here, get this boy some development.

Zig/Maya/Zoe Plot. The writers finally made a smart move here, getting Zig out the way early so the two girls can work out their issues. I'll miss the conflict they had, but it was great seeing them singing together. Also, I did like Zoe finally throwing it back in Maya's face about what happened between her and Miles, something I forgot and something she should've been more angry with Miles about.

Drecky/Brew Plot. Well, it's there. I don't mind it, it didn't bug me, they fit together well, yadda yadda yadda. Didn't like how blase Dallas was at Becky being missing, but then again he had the cooler head and probably just assumed she was hanging somewhere inside. Also Imogen's presentation in the beginning was cute. Speaker of her and Dallas, are we supposed to forget they were held back? IDK.

In any case, bring on season 14 or not if it is going to be as wildly uneven as this season was.

I am amazed by how much more natural Imogen and her current girlfriend (I can't believe I forgot her name-- Jack?) seem together than Imogen and Fiona. We don't even see them developing their relationship much, but their kiss and casual interactions tonight seemed totally believable. Fiona and Imogen always seemed to be uptight and trying too hard.

I love that the writers, shockingly, took their time with them because it felt so natural.

That's what I liked about the Tristan/Miles plot as well.  Hopefully Tristan doesn't screw it up by being super overzealous, and Miles doesn't screw up by being a dick.

Seeing Miles and Frankie fight over the TV was pretty fun, makes me want to see more siblings and sibling interactions on Degrassi.

It's nice when they acknowledge that there are people who are related on the show.  By the way, where was their creepy ass brother?

As for the pregnancy bomb... well, I cackled,

I cackled too.  But it was because I was tired of all my eyerolling over how enticing and unforgettable and perfect Clair is.  First she gets to reschedule a missed admissions interview for a top school, then Eli is so not over her.  And it kind of pissed me off that she didn't even say anything back to him, just stood there with a grin thinking, "of course you're not over me" an rushed off to her plane.  So the schadenfreud of her finding out she's pregnant was magnificent!

This episode did something wonderful - it got me excited for the next batch of episodes. I'm interested to see where they go with each of these plots.

Drew and Becky don't really excite me, but I'm hoping for at least one scene about Adam. It's not uncommon in fiction to see the brother/best friend wind up with his dead sibling/pal's girlfriend. What's strange to me is we've never really seen Becky or Drew connecting over how they miss Adam, and that's what I think this relationship is missing. Are they drawn together because of Adam?

I'm looking forward to a Zoe and Maya friendship, especially if their crowd includes Zig and Grace. Not the sort of people Zoe would have imagined herself with, but I could see them having a nice dynamic. I think the best part of the scene was for Maya to realize that she hurt Zoe and Zoe was jealous of her. I'm also wondering if these two are going to form Degrassi's latest band.

Miles and Tristan had me captivated from the word go. I loved seeing them as friends, and I am so excited to see Miles exploring his sexuality this fall. Has Degrassi had a bi male character? Or even a gay character who started out actively dating girls? I'm also glad that Tristan was given a clue that his teacher was not a good guy. Hopefully he's able to work through this, and he and Miles can find support in one another. Platonic or otherwise.

And good old Clare. I liked seeing her in New York, and I'm still a sucker for Eli and Clare. I hate when they are over-the-top dramatic, but I think the two have a nice easy chemistry. When they are happy, like this episode, they are among my favorite Degrassi pairings. I liked imagining that Columbia/New York/Eli could be her happily ever after, so I was appropriately shocked when she received her news. I cannot wait to see how Degrassi handles this! I feel like Clare could go any way, and I love the uncertainty. I do hope this brings the female friendship I keep wanting more of - Clare & Jenna. If anyone knows what Clare is going through, Jenna is the girl.

Finally registered here so that I could chime in on this. I'm really torn on this episode. Aside from any other issues it had the OMGSTORM drama, which makes me laugh more than anything else because shows always do it and it's always so cheesy and it almost never causes any real damage.

Drew and Becky. I'm okay with it theoretically, but it was written so badly, especially with the "Drew knows Becky so well" bits. Hey, show? You remember when you were just doing the "Drew knows Clare so well" bit a little while back? And the worst parts were shoved together right at the beginning. "Becky used to do a dance routine to this song with her brother, and that's why she's upset, and I know this because we're totally buds!" and "Becky always goes to the greenhouse when she's upset, yet another thing I suddenly know about Becky because apparently we've spent a lot of time together since the last episode!" It was just crazy forced. But I do hope the spectre of Adam kind of hangs over them at some point.

Speaking of, I'm a little surprised that Becky still doesn't know that Adam cheated on her a little with Imogen. I thought they were cementing their friendship first, but it's been a whole season now. Maybe next season, or maybe the writers have just moved on. What was Drew's attitude on that, anyway? I remember him wanting Adam to keep focused on counseling but I also remember him not really having an issue with Adam hooking up with Imogen.

Eli and Clare was also forced, and it also felt like sort of a sudden shift to get people where they want them. I guess part of it is Eli not being a regular presence anymore. The last time we saw him, it was big drama and sadness. And here, even at the beginning, he was totally cool and calm and smiley about everything. It was just trying too hard to suddenly have them be light and fun again. Did not expect the pregnancy thing; don't know how I feel about it. It would be awesome if they remember that Clare and her family are supposed to be religious, though, because we never really hear about that anymore.

I liked the Maya/Zoe storyline in some ways, hated it in others. I know that Maya was upset about the party reveal, but I didn't really like that she went right back to hating Zoe, after being supportive throughout the whole rape storyline. However, I did like that Maya called Zoe on the awful shit Zoe did in the first half of the season. But then, I haaaated that Zoe never really aplogizes for or explains any of that, and it's all brushed off with admissions of jealousy.

Tristan and Miles was...interesting. Maybe a little fanfic-y, but I actually remember someone speculating quite a while ago (on the dearly departed TWoP boards) about Miles winding up as a love interest for Tristan. When they did that rom-com almost kiss by the pool thing I was like "Holy shit, are they really doing that?" I'm also interested because:

Miles and Tristan had me captivated from the word go. I loved seeing them as friends, and I am so excited to see Miles exploring his sexuality this fall. Has Degrassi had a bi male character? Or even a gay character who started out actively dating girls?

I don't think so, and that's something I'm potentially looking forward to. It's even more striking when you realize that it's exactly the opposite with most of the female characters in same-sex relationships. Almost all of them were introduced and established well before any type of same-sex pairing. They didn't go there with Paige (and Alex) until Season 5, I think Fiona was in her second season, and Imogen was introduced having an obsession with Eli.

In contrast, every (major) gay male character has been essentially introduced that way. I think the first episode centered on Marco was specifically about that; same goes for Riley. And Tristan was fairly clear from the start. And I don't remember there being any implicitly or explicitly bi male characters at all. So either way, the Miles thing is interesting and I think kind of neat because it's the first time they've ever taken a firmly established male character and then later (possibly) developed a same-sex attraction/pairing.

My one criticism there is that I think it still felt a bit forced just because we've barely seen Tristan and Miles hang out in the second half of the season. I seem to remember them interacting more as friends earlier in the season, but there's been very little of that recently. So suddenly having them be so close again (to the point that there was sexual tension) seemed a bit off, but whatever.

Immy dressed as The Gorton's Fisherman and asking, "Why does no one ever take me seriously?"

I was sure Maya and Zoe were going to dip a toe, if not take a swim, in The Lady Pond.  Maybe next season...

I guess this is just a reflection of some of my own prejudices, but there are certain characters that I didn't warm up to until they moved into LGBT storylines, or at least LGBT-adjacent stories.  I thought Imogen was incredibly annoying until they paired her with Fiona, and now I love her, whether she's dressed for Deadliest Catch or in a nun's habit.  Same with Becky and Clare before they either dated or befriended Adam.  Even going back to Paige and Alex.

So, yeah, despite myself, I found myself really digging Tristan/Miles.  I just hope that if it does turn out that Miles is bisexual, they don't do to him what they did to Paige, and totally insulted both the personal growth and the chemistry she had with Alex (moreso than any boyfriend she had, IMHO) by declaring it wasn't a big deal.

Let's not forget also that one of the twins in the original Degrassi also had a pregnancy scare that resulted in an abortion. Very controversial for back then. I think the States refused to air the episode.  I am hoping that Clair does have a miscarriage.

Or even a gay character who started out actively dating girls?

Weren't Riley and Anya a couple for a while?  I mean, I think the show had pretty much set up that he was gay and really in denial about it, but I remember them having a quasi-real relationship, as opposed to Ellie being Marco's beard.

Of all the ridiculous things that happened in this episode, the one that stuck out the most was the Columbia interviewer calling Clare's grades "marks."  No American would ever say that.

When did Eli get so adorable?  Assured, self-possessed, secure, and that lovely smile to top it off.  He was such a goofy-looking kid but grew into a handsome young man.

I like the idea of Zig and Zoe (DoubleZed?  Appreciate the Canadianism there).  They bring a calming, natural presence to their scenes.

Excellent catch.  I'm so used to all the Canadianisms - change room, washroom, grade 9 (or 10 or whatever), and of course "sore-y" and "aboot", that "marks" spoken by an ostensible American went right over my head.

I'm a sucker. I've fallen for Zig/Zoe.

How old is she supposed to be... 17? Why have they given Claire the worst haircut in the world?

I'm OK with Drew being the bestest, more supportive, sweetest guy in the world. Just don't let the Becky/Drew thing be romantic. Basically, let Drew be the male equivalent of Imogen. He's already sort of fallen into that role now that he's an upperclassman.

I like to imagine the tree falling and the storm were the writers way of saying "No, Drew. Forget character development and backstory. You will play by our rules." You know, a Stranger Than Fiction kind of thing.

Ugh, Maya. Way to make it all about you and forget what else happened at that party. Zig/Zoe for the win. Also, she thinks she owns people? No one will ever truly love you? Writers, why did you make Miles so creepy and weird? Maya shouldn't want to be with him anyway. He's worse than Eli ever was. He's not on medication.

Oh my God, Tristan just standing in the rain. I needed a good laugh. "Just leave me to the storm." "You're a god among men." Stop it, Degrassi. It hurts. It hurts to laugh this much. Oh, God. And then Imogen, Drew, and Jack running out into the storm. That was straight up Sharknado filming. When they panned up to the roof I almost expected Becky to be up there either as a Daria tribute or dressed as Superhoodie (Misfits).

The actress playing Maya can't even scream properly. Try harder, girl.

Eli sounds different. Did Monroe's voice change? Is that even possible at his age? Did he just have a cold?

Oh, God, Becky and Drew in the basement. This is amazing. Degrassi hasn't been this funny since last summer. The way they played Tristan and Miles? I can't. Degrassi, sometimes you're too good to me. OK, since when has Drew been this religious? And also, "are you tempted" and then that kiss. I am so happy right now. Forget the drama. Degrassi is the most amazing comedy.

Yes, I really believe that these two teenagers know the theme song to Golden Girls. Are Zoe and Maya going to start our next girl band? Has there been a girl band since Ashley? I can't remember.

So, Eclare lives and the writers are determined to go for Drew/Becky. I thought it was the death knell for Clew, but wait! Claire is pregnant. I can't. Stop it. Can someone name one time when baby drama went well on Degrassi? I think Jenna might have gotten through it best mainly because we pretend it never happened now.

Honestly, since when are Drew and Becky tight? They had to force it so hard in order to make it even begin to work. So stupid.

Well he was super angry at her when Adam died. But I think they've been doing a lot of student government things together and I think they were both involved with investigating Zoe's assault so basically let's pretend they've started getting close since Adam died.

So i think maybe we'll be seeing a Clare faces abortion storyline.

I think maybe if this was Holly J, I'd say yes but omgsowicked's comment reminded me that Clare is supposed to be Darcy's sister and their family is very religious. Like Holly J, Clare is written as a very ambitious character so I can't see her trying to juggle keeping the baby and going to Columbia. But maybe? I don't know. This show will do whatever it wants to do. It would give them a chance to show how wonderfully perfect this version of Eli is for helping to raise Clare and Drew's love child. That sounds like something they'd be drawn to.

Drew is, basically, attracted to anyone and everyone at this point, it seems. It's hard for me to take any particular connection he makes seriously because he's kind of into everyone.

He's Degrassi's version of Sam (Glee). He's the attractive male character who can be paired with anyone. And not only can they put him with anyone but they'll change his personality to facilitate the relationship. He's the sexy jock for Alli. For her taste, he's a bad boy. He's the unattainable good guy for Bianca. Then he transformed again when Bianca became smart and driven Bianca 2.0. He improved with her but always a step behind until she had no choice but to leave him. I forgot that Drew went out with Katie but I know he adapted to be with her as well because of course he did. Then it's time to pair Drew with Clare so suddenly Bianca pushes him into student government and we get uber nice guy Drew (remember how he was when Clare was still in the hospital?) who still screws up occasionally so Clare can be superior. And then Zoe needed a shoulder to cry on so there's Drew again to be the guy she needs in that moment. Heck, he even adapted to be there for Mrs. Hollingsworth for a hot second. And now we have Becky where Drew is suddenly going on and on about God tempting him. Because of course. Why let him be his own person when he can basically be a male mannequin who changes his clothes and personality for each new love interest? I still like him though. Probably because of the combination of making him too perfect and the actor improving over time.

And good old Clare. I liked seeing her in New York, and I'm still a sucker for Eli and Clare. I hate when they are over-the-top dramatic, but I think the two have a nice easy chemistry. When they are happy, like this episode, they are among my favorite Degrassi pairings.

Exactly. As ridiculous as they can get, the actress who plays Clare is at her best with Monroe. When they're just happy, they work together really well. Not that I completely hate the epic romance stuff. If it isn't hilariously emo then occasional some of that saccharine goop can be somewhat touching.

Becky always goes to the greenhouse when she's upset, yet another thing I suddenly know about Becky because apparently we've spent a lot of time together since the last episode!"

That was a weird one because I don't think we (the audience) have ever seen Becky in the greenhouse. I think it would have worked a little better if we'd seen Becky go to the greenhouse a lot this season and then Drew knew to go there to find her. It would have seemed less like something they just made up for the sake of establishing their friendship.

I think Clare will land up having an abortion. She'll probably struggle with the decision, but it is what she will do in the end for story purposes. If she were younger (not in grade 12) or if it was earlier in the school year, I would think she would have the baby. That way they could keep her on the show longer because she misses too much school. Also, if this show followed students past graduation, they might have her keep the baby and decide at least initially to defer university. However, I think they want her to leave the show following her dreams, so she'll have an abortion and then go to dream school. She might not even tell anyone other than Alli.

As for Clare and Eli, I don't really like Eli that much, but I have to say I was charmed by the way he was behaving in this episode and the way the two of them were experiencing this perfect city life together. Another reason why I think they'll have Clare go to New York to her dream school with her dream guy never to be heard from again.

Didn't they actually not show the episode where a character had an abortion in the United States? Do we think Degrassi is going to have another abortion and have an episode that can't be aired? It seems slightly crazy that these kids do all kind of crazy shit, including drugs, gangs, porn, whatever else, and a storyline where a kid does something legal that is a real thing some young women need to face, is censored. But that's America for you. I just hate pregnancy storylines.

I also don't get the idea that Eli and Clare are supposed to be this super couple of the series. I really don't get it.

My LOL moment: The patio area has been destroyed, and the pool is filled with tons of leaves, debris and some pieces of furniture. Tristan is delicately picking out like two leaves.

They did show the episode in the US... eventually. According to the Wikia, they aired it two years after Canada did. I do remember them sneaking it into one of their "every episode ever" marathons. Who knows what they'd do now... I'd like to think they'd air it without controversy. But I think Clare's going to have a miscarriage, which has never been done (Anya faked one in S10).
