Well, this looked like a show for me to stay away from, based on the commercials, but since I'm a 3rd generation Charlestonian, I figured I'd better take a look and see how embarrassing this thing could be.

Actually, the show seemed like the "Hottest new show on TV -- in 1990".  I just got a real retro vibe from this show.  It was like someone at CBS in 1990 was trying to figure out how to overtake NBC in the ratings and thought, "You know, soap operas and young hot stars are big right now.  What if we created a sexy combination of The Young and the Restless and Matlock?"

The acting was "up" to soap opera standards, the writing and directing were awful; heck, this could have been one of those "Crimetime After Primetime" shows that CBS used to run at 11:30 pm before they snagged David Letterman.

As a former Charleston resident, I didn't mind the fake accents (at least they weren't TOO over the top), or the fact that they try all their legal cases in City Hall rather than the county courthouse, or that everyone seems to live in the historic portion of downtown as opposed to the suburbs.  What got my goat was the apparent lack of air conditioning that Hollywood's version of Charleston seems to have.  The giant fans in the courtroom, the steamy, sultry nights out by the boats, buying the "Original Cola" from the generic vending machine and putting the can on the back of your neck to try to keep cool....In real life, those historic building were converted to A/C about 60 years ago (they've got electricity and everything!).

My favorite character was the crooked cop, who ALMOST twirled his invisible mustache and leered at the camera every time he performed some nefarious act. LOL  They should make this guy the star of the show and let him get his JR Ewing on! (Another hip reference circa 1990).

All in all, this was a bad TV show, but not as bad as I was expecting; rather, it was kind of old and forgettable.  Charleston looked great, though!  It should really be a boost to the local tourist economy, if nothing else.

Shawn Hatosy! The only reason I tuned in. And the only reason I might do so again.

I agree that the overall feel is dated, and the leads are pretty boring.

Count me as another one only here for Shawn Hatosy- he was excellent in Southland and I'm so happy just to see him and his ever-fabulous hair back on my TV. I've never heard of the lead actors and found them a bit bland, some of the writing (especially the leads and their flirty dialogue about sweating, ugh!)  was just cringy.

I didn't recognize any of the actors other than Shawn Hatosy, but I've always enjoyed his work.  I thought it was entertaining enough to get me to tune in again.

I thought it was fun enough to set a season pass, except that the actress who plays Jamie looks so much like Juliette Lewis that it kept drawing me out of the story. That and her excessively red lipstick.

 

I had to look up Cam Gigandet, because yowza. Sultry indeed. IMDB tells me he's been pretty busy, but nothing I've seen.

 

I'm easy to please but will try not to get too attached because I don't see this lasting very long.

Jamie and Roy find themselves representing opposing sides in a heated custody battle. Roy feels conflicted as there's missing footage from the police department's sex tape.

Adam Rodriguez is always playing good guys who might be bad but not really.

I missed the pilot. Watching episode 2 now. Feel a little lost. First impressions of the cast (which I thought was better placed in the pilot discussion thread) is that the lead (?) woman looks like a (much) prettier Juliette Lewis and everyone else is oh-so-pretty.

I also mostly tuned in because of Shawn Hatosy, but recognize most of the other cast (Etta from Fringe! Jesse from Roswell! Volchuk from OC!).

Not sure if I'll stick around though. Acting's not that great, even from Shawn H.

Is the police corruption arc going to carry through the season? I normally don't cotton to TV series that are really 20 hour movies, but this had another B storyline case that was interesting enough. I was glad to see that the writers aren't going to have Jamie win all the time.

Annoying that the rape recording was sabotaged and didn't work when Jamie was watching, but I suppose that would've wrapped everything up too soon.

I don't think it's even possible to corrupt a file in the way they shown (so exactly that the file still plays, but with no video throughout).  Sure video files can go corrupt so that the video gets scrambled, but if it was enough to be as messed up as shown, the video player wouldn't even be able to launch it.

I did not think I would like this show but, ridiculoius Southern stereotypes aside (I live in Alabama), I really like it a lot.  Does that make me a bad person?

 

The actress that plays Jaime reminds me SO MUCH of Juliette Lewis that I almost cannot get past it. Not only does she look like her but she sounds like her.  I even thought it was her in the previews. It was not until about 5 mins into the pilot that I knew for 100% sure that it wasn't JL.  But, seriously, they have to be related somewhere down the road right?

 

Speaking of Southern stereotypes, I am truly shocked that the Southern accents are acceptable. Well, aside from the loser bad cop that they are setting up (his is awful). The heat thing, well, I can look past that I guess.  Granted, the Southeast, for the most part, does actually have central air conditioning but it still can be hot in certain buildings This can be true in certain government buildings especially since they can be stingy with running the air.  Plus, from April to November, it is freaking HOT here with the humidity at a point that is nearly unbearable during May - September.

 

It is funny to me that every  southern "bad boy" type that is portrayed in a movie or tv show lives in some kind of old waterfront home that he is in the process of fixing up.

 

So are Jaime and Roy always going to be opposing counsel?.

Speaking of Southern stereotypes, I am truly shocked that the Southern accents are acceptable. Well, aside from the loser bad cop that they are setting up (his is awful). 

Speaking of the setup of the cop... this is the dealbreaker on the show with me.  So they had a cop go undercover, and in the process he was part of (or at least witness to) a date rape.  Already we have a major "what the fuck".  Then the police department deals with the aftermath by firing the victim, and apparently praying that a big enough bribe of a settlement makes it go away.

 

The reveal that this is an undercover thing to take that cop and his circle down seemingly is supposed to "make this all okay". Huh? In what universe.  In the real world that takes the lawsuit the woman is mounting from a million or two to 20 or 30 times that.

 

Even presuming the "good cop" couldn't stop the rape and just kind of sat back and pretended, I'm at wits end as to why the Chief didn't take aside the female cop, "read her in" to the situation, and gain her cooperation.  You can't unsink a ship, so it's not even possible after they've fired her, but early enough and they could have concocted some transfer (a city the size of Charleston won't have ONE police station), and if it was later, they could have at least "fired" her on the books but with a promise ahead of time that it was a ruse, and she'd be brought back with full status, lost pay, and a huge bonus.

How does Jamie get to Roy's house? Doesn't he live on an island? We saw him arrive at work on a boat in the pilot. So does she have a boat? Is there a water taxi service? Does she have a kayak?

(And why is this the question that bugs me the most about this show, when there are so many other illogical plot turns and stupid stereotypes?)

Thanks, I'd forgotten that! Climbing out of his waders to reveal his suit. That boat must be very sloshy.

 

I also enjoyed the scene of Roy closing the screens (?) on the porch while Jamie was trying to talk to him. Didn't shut out shit from sight or hearing, but very symbolic and flirty in that "I'm paying you a lot of attention by pulling your pigtails to prove how much I don't care" kind of way.

 

Can't wait to see Roy's ex-wife.

OMG!!! LOVE IT!!  Just got caught up on all 3 episodes....fabulous. What Revenge should have been.  Man I hope they don't water it down because if they keep this intensity up, they've got a break out HIT for drama lovers!! Meeeee!!   So cool to see Eric again and OC's older brother - just all the way around a delightful surprise!

I adored it!  That's Delko from CSI Miami and the older brother from the OC and true Hollywood - movies.  Very cool and just enough twang.  Too bad it's gonna get killed from the sounds of this.

 it shows her driving there in ep. 3.  The screen thing was hilarious because he didn't even bother to tack up the last one after she left.

At least Jamie knows the "truth" about Preston now and that Roy wasn't trying to gaslight her. I don't suppose we're rid of Preston entirely but sorry, something about the actor's jawline and mouth bothers me when he talks. While I'm going there, I also hate Knox's pornstache.

 

Do we think the blond city council woman will turn out to be Roy's ex? She seems icy enough.

 

That was sure a targeted molotov cocktail that kills (I assume) the guy in the wheelchair but not the woman hugging him.

 

Good grief. I was cruising IMDB to find the actor who plays Knox and just now realized that Dec is Gregory Harrison. For some neurotic reason, I realize I'm getting old but am always surprised when actors age. They're supposed to stay the way they are in my memory!

I'm pretty sure he was between the window and her, and that his military experience/training kicked in so that he recognized the danger, which is why he yelled, "Get down!" and threw his massive torso and arms around her, throwing them both to the floor, his body covering (and presumably) shielding hers.

I will just be really annoyed if they somehow manage to legally use this against her to deny her the half mil.

I will be really annoyed if she doesn't stand up and get out of there NOW. I've never seen someone on tv in a building that much on fire make it out - the way the fire progressed/ took was really impressive. And I don't see how she can get out at this point.

 

And yes, Delko's or whomever he is on this show, jawline's changed.  Age I guess, sadly.

 

Anyway, after reading the dismal ratings and stuff I realized this show is on at 9 p.m. on Sunday - the KISS OF DEATH for any tv show, well on ABC anyway.  The last 4 or 5 shows they've put in that time slot have all been killed in creative ways. Some without even showing all the filmed episodes: Park Ave. 666.

 

Finally, yeah, what decade are we in here?  I think I auto filled in the 90's because I was impressed there was a cool black woman featured prominently (even if she did have to work with the Yankee lawyer)  and the hair on the lead and the blonde city councilwoman.  But for 2013 that's pretty retro - hope they aren't confusing retro with the south.  eta:  Nope it's retro Southern, blech.  The thumb drive was 2013.  I wonder if you could make a thumb drive that would like, self destruct after one viewing?  Or if he got it back from IT guy that way?  And why the hell didn't he download it anyway as it was his only copy. 

 

The one thing I do really like about the show is that there's no one "special," on it - no Mentalist, Unforgettable, Blacklist...just 90's drama and people doing their job and other things.  :)  But I'm revising my opinion as I type, lol.

 

Council woman or Madam Mayor had...interesting eye contact. There's going to be a backstory there.

Reckless led out of that with 4.1 mil and a 0.6, flat versus its previous outing and bested in the time period (as was ABC’s Castle repeat) by NBC’s Law & Order: Svu rerun (2.9 mil/0.8).

 

 

Whew, yeah, when a rerun of Law & Order: Svu beats your new show, it's sad.  Srry!

This show is total trash to me. Just such a dimly lit, soapy, thing where almost no one in the show is likable anyway. I only care about female cop who was raped, whatever her name is, because I love Etta Bishop of Fringe but I cannot believe how terrible this is.

 

Also I never once heard a thing about it until I started following Georgina on Twitter so it's no wonder no one is watching it. I do watch some CBS and I don't recall seeing any ads for it during anything else I watched except maybe Unforgtttable in that "coming up next" sort of way.

Why in hell wouldn't Jamie tell her brother who she was the first time she met him? Bah. I have no tolerance for plot points that defy common sense and then of course come back to bite people in the ass. Just as glad Jamie's brother left, though. She already has one houseguest too many.

 

If they keep on with all the contrivances, I'll be getting less and less sad that this will likely be canceled soon.

 

At least Jamie and Roy get to kissing next week, per the previews.

Lots of things scream 90's, early 2000's, except for the thumb drive, even the monitors are those old Viewsonic 15", which you can only find now in old buildings or junk yards. But then they are using windows 8.1 so it's this year.. (another MS product placement, how many shows now)

I'm amazed that bad cop dude really goes around acting like he loves LeAnne. So odd considering the orgy thing.  But wow, dude's crazy to push his head to a gun. And kind of awesome.  And the father is an ass, but does a really good ass character.

 

Roy is.....sometimes sexy. But not nearly as hot as Jamie.  Sometimes he charms me, sometimes he just annoys me. 

 

Love the opening pier scenes in every after commercial break shots!

Not sure if this is a retcon or a misdirect, since we, the audience, never really saw the whole tape. They had been suggesting that Adam Rodriguez/Preston was an undercover good guy and Shawn Hatosy/Terry was scum of the earth. But last episode and this one they seem to be hinting that Terry is maybe just a pawn trapped in the corrupt system. Hatosy is the stronger actor, so maybe they're retooling the plot?

Georgina Haig, who is Australian, really seems to have the southern accent down.

In other words, a judge simply tossing a case in that matter is not automatically the end.  While the case can't be appealed on it's own merits, the actual supposed reasons for the dismissal can be.

 

That said, its unlikely a judge could simply undo a verdict of this type the way Jamie asked.  It would have to be formally appealed, I bet.

 You're Welcome. This show really has a lot of back and forthing as to who seems to be a good guy or bad guy. I kinda love that.

Bad cop seems now like he does really care about LeeAnn, which begs the question of why the hell would he drug her and pass her around to his "buddies"? And film it? Maybe we will find out he had no choice or something if this show isn't cancelled.

Reckless is my favourite new show of the summer. I rewatched some earlier episodes to watch the progression of the relationship between Roy and Jamie. The scene when Jamie goes to Roy's house (only to find him entertaining Nancy Davis, the blond reporter) to say that she trusts him was very significant for them. It was also significant that Roy agreed to help her with her brother's case (sit at her table) and that she called him when Max disappeared. I enjoyed the scene in the restaurant where Roy was having dinner with his ex-wife Shelby and noticed Jamie at a neighbouring table. Shelby could certainly recognize the mutual attraction. Jamie must confide in Vi since there have been a couple of scenes where she has made some comments about Roy to Jamie.

I do enjoy it too; it's got a lot of odd juxtapositions (the 90's feel, set in real time,  bad cop - or is he?? we can't use illicit dna but we will!  etc.)  and developments - like you mention with Jamie and Roy (who are show's endgame?).   I think Jamie did the "I trust YOU," thing in direct reaction to the detective's betrayl though so not sure how *real* that was. Obviously she really trusted him since he's the only person she ever gave a key to.  That's kind of what's fun about it, everyone bounces off each other like human pinballs....recklessly.  :)

 

Oh, wow, forgot the office bug - I hope they don't just never mention it again as it was a huge betrayal, and creepy too with Jamie sleeping there at times!

Maybe I need to devote part of this weekend to rewatching all the episodes. Or just FF to the the Jamie/Roy scenes. :)

 

But I really have lost some plot threads along the way. Like, I didn't realize Nolan worked in Dec's firm.
