  1. A question. Maybe it's my comcast DVR but when I pipe the audio through my AV receiver (via the optical output) the sound mix is awful. It goes up and down in volume and is low during the actual performances and the louder during the judges comments. Just using my TV's speakers the audio is move even. Anyone having similar issues with the Dolby 5.1 feed?
  2. I'm very disappointed at this latest "surprise" in the show's format. It is almost a bait a switch routine. I still long for the days when there were no All-stars and the Top 20 had to pair up and make or break each other. Those were the show's golden seasons. I suspect, however, that given SYTYCD's low ratings over the past few years, Fox has increasingly put constraints on Nigel and the show runners in terms of time allowed per season and that has led to the constant changes in format. You have to wonder about how much more tinkering the producers can do before SYTYCD is barely recognizable.
  3. There was a very nice guest shot by Romy Rosemont. She was the woman who had reunited with her long lost love. She is always good and may be remembered for one of the most gut wrenching scenes in Glee's six year history. She was Carol, Finn's mother and after Corey Montieth died they wrote Finn's death into the show and there was a scene in which Carol is boxing some of Finn's things and grief overwhelms her. It was a very powerful piece of acting.
  4. The whole video camera thing was absurd. In any ER, let alone one in a major city that goes into Code Black almost every day, an intern shooting video would never be tolerated no matter who his daddy was. That should have been nipped in the bud with Leanne throwing Diego's rear end out of the ER and killing his medical career right quick. In regard to the series closer, I found it to be disappointing. There were just to many contrived plot threads and the plane crash was silly. Same thing with Ethans' brother's ghost. There had to be other ways to tie up the wonderful personal relationships. There were some high points in that regard: -Ethan and Rox (about damn time that he figured that out) - Ethan and his dad (David Clennon is always good) - Leanne's plea to the judge, brilliantly delivered by Marcia Gay Harden in a nice show closer
  5. You will. Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman never suffer from a shortage of work. Until they each land new series I'm sure that they'll be doing guest shots on various shows.
  6. I may be swimming against the tide but I'm really going to miss Code Black. Any show that has, among its principle actors, Marcia Gay Hardin, Rob Lowe and Luis Guzman has a lot going for it.
  7. Just finished season 2. Great stuff. So are we dealing with Neo-Nazis or real Nazis looking to create a Fourth Reich and is the fact that Hector is on a ship based in Cape Town an indication that perhaps he's not completely out of the business. Wasn't it revealed that the people that Nick Fisher and the German agent had ties to may be based in South Africa? Of course the real question is, with Season 3 probably now shooting, will it pick up where season 2 left off?
  8. Mr. Noir was an absolute joke. The fact that he's black, a lawyer and presents in a calm and "reasonable" manner covered up the fact that, at the end of the day, he did nothing more than parrot all of the NRA's absurd arguments against any kind of even modest gun control measures. His minimizing the damage that "one person with a gun" can do was insane and offensive. I thought that Neerea called him out and made him look foolish. Maybe Noir should, as Josh Barrow suggested, look at the actual data. He would quickly learn how much death one person with a gun, be it an AR-15 or a 9mm handgun, can sow. He would have also discovered the disparity between whites and blacks when it comes to the various Stand Your Ground laws. Like others here, I was disturbed by Bill's interview with him. Sometimes, Bill, in the name of "fairness" practices the very political correctness that he decries every week. He would have had every right to tear this guy a new one. Even during the Overtime segment, one blowhard and another guest's fencing with him cut down the time that a very good panel of guests had to say anything.
  9. Not surprised that DS got the boot. The first season was good because of the ongoing uncovering of the conspiracy after the bombing of the Capitol Building. This season has been nothing but "The Perils of President Pauline". It's one absurd situation after another. I'm not sure that Netflix could make enough changes in the script writing to change the show's direction. One good thing is that I won't have to watch Michael J. Fox ruin another show. Whether its this show or The Good Wife , Fox has essentially played the same tiresome character.
  10. I'm not surprised at the cancellation. I always figured that Rise was a one season one off. As a lifelong theatergoer I'm always happy to see anything about live theater on network TV but it's very hard to sustain multiple seasons. Smash, for all of it's flaws, gave it a go and got two full seasons. Rise has a bunch of uber-talented kids and a great Broadway show as one of it's primary cores. The teenage angst and bureaucratic impositions are hardly new frontiers however. A second season or more would end up treading over the same ground artistically and dramatically. The audience just wouldn't be there. Oh well, it was a good try. As far as tonight's show goes, my bet is that the kids say screw it and do the real version of Spring Awakening. The last scene of the series will be either: 1- The parents realize what a great show this is, how brilliant their kids are and leap up to give them a standing ovation. Simon's father, moved by his son's kissing a boy leaps up, and announces that he is running away with a "gentleman friend" so that he can finally be who he is. Simon's mother secretly rejoices and starts eyeing the town's eligible men. 2- Lou is fired on the spot. The parents are horrified, leap up, storm the stage and tear the set apart. Simon's father, moved by his son's kissing a boy leaps up, and announces that he is running away with a "gentleman friend" so that he can finally be who he is. Simon's mother secretly rejoices and starts eyeing the town's eligible men.
  11. Just a gut wrenching show tonight. If anyone has had to sit with a loved one and watch helplessly as the monitors drop to zero, an episode like tonight's really hits home. The show's excellent cast hit all of the right notes in portraying this very difficult situation.
  12. My daughter is a Production Stage Manager (and Equity member). When I told her about the disastrous tech rehearsal she just started to laugh, She said that she's been in too many rough techs but not where everything went wrong. She's always reluctant to watch network TV's shows about live theater (although she had a love-hate relationship with Smash) because she sees so many things that are just plain unrealistic. If Rise closes with a solid production of Spring Awakening, she'll probably sneak a look at it. Forgot to also mention that when I told my kid that newbie jackass director Lou decided to do a complete run through at the first tech rehearsal, she said "they did what?". Doesn't take much in fictional theater world to get a rise out of her.
  13. Last night's show was another example of a poor guest choice which Bill and his staff periodically make. Bill should realize by now that not every one who agrees with his unique point of view makes for good television. Peterson is a self-indulgent blowhard who devoured way too much time and brought the show's timing to a halt. Poor Frank Bruni, a great NY Times columnist, barely got to say anything. It was good to see Alex Wagner. I remember when she got shafted by MSNBC but she appears to have landed on her feet very nicely. I'll have to catch Overtime to see her eat Peterson's lunch.
  14. Yeah that was cringe worthy. It was a real douche move by Simon. The young lady seems desperate for attention from a guy and willing to go the sex route to get it. I don't think that Simon is trying to stay closeted. Rather, he's trying to convince himself that he's not gay. Obviously his parents are the driving force but as someone speculated in post about an earlier episode, you have to wonder about the father's sexuality at this point. His reactions to Simon's role in the show seemed a bit too "he doth protest too much".
  15. I liked the show last night. We finally got to hear Auli'i Cravalho (Lilette) cut loose vocally when she sang Mama Who Bore Me. It was about time. After all she was the lead voice in Moana. Girlfriend can flat out sing. I caught something interesting today. The drama department of Stoneman Douglas High School is doing Spring Awakening and Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff and several other original Broadway cast members joined the kids at a rehearsal. Not too shabby, eh?
  16. I have really enjoyed Rise. Even with the surrounding drama, Rise is another step in the revival of musical theater on TV. The young cast has been excellent and the adults (Josh Radnor, Rosie Perez, Marley Shelton, etc) have gotten it done. The budding romance between Tracey and Andy is very sweet and well played by the actors. One nice thing about last night's episode was that as it closed, we really got the hear the kids and the band go all out on the musical number from SA. Sure it's a pre-recorded sound track there's some serious vocal talent in the group. I look forward to each new episode and hopefully enough people do to give the show life beyond its initial ten episodes.
  17. Or maybe Georgiou based upon her brief exposure to the prime universe figured that the Federation was too principled and "human" to be truly strong. The perceived weakness might make it easy pickings if she decided to create her own rebel force to overthrow it. She could be an emperor again. Now that would be one great story arc.
  18. The finale was mixed bag for me. I loved Mirror Georgiou not even trying to suppress her innate, vicious self. Letting her run loose in the prime universe could make for some fun next season if Michelle is on board when shooting begins. Tilly was hilarious and props for Clint Howard's cameo. The resolution of the Klingon war was meh at best. It seem like it was pasted together at the last minute and given the Klingon nature, L'Rell becoming head honcho with a planet killer in her hands didn't quite fit. The show did manage to answer the question of spore vs. warp drive in the years subsequent to Discovery's era. As many of us suspected it came down to the human cost of operating the spore drive. Burham's speech was OK but a bit cliched. OTOH, her scene with Amanda (Mia Kirshner looked beautiful) was well done. Of course, the appearance of Christopher Pike and the Enterprise was pretty cool. Maybe they can have a hologram of Jeffery Hunter on the bridge or perhaps Bruce Greenwood
  19. It was great to see Michelle looking like her real self again and in Georgiou's Starfleet uniform. All in all, just another superb episode. The writing has been very strong since the show returned from its break.
  20. It was fun watching Michelle Yoeh do her customary kick-ass in close fighting. Maybe in the Prime Universe Emperor Georgiou will get a makeover and will look like yummy Georgiou. That will definitely blow Michael away.
  21. Great news. Once the team auditions were done (can we not have that again?), last season really took off with some great dancing. It was a good rebound from some less than stellar seasons that preceded it.
  22. Just riveting from start to finish, it was possibly the best episode of season 1.
  23. Hmm... Don't know if I can stick the rest of this season out. Aside from the gigantic plot holes, this episode had some of the worst over-acting that I've seen recently. It was like a high school play where the kids are all desperately trying to reach the last row in the auditorium.
  24. Just finished Season 2 which, IMHO, was even better than Season 1. Olivia Colman is great choice for the older Elizabeth and Season 3 should be a killer especially it's getting into an era that more people in the US are familiar with. The betting is on for who will play Philip. Matt Smith thinks that he knows who is replacing him but isn't sure and, obviously, couldn't say yet if he did know for certain.
  25. I finally watched the first episode last night and loved it. Rachel Brosnahan was very good in "Manhattan" the show about the creation of the first atomic bombs during WWII and in this show she's outstanding. This role is a career booster. For me the cultural references were great. Being Jewish and growing up in NYC in the 1950s (although not in a swanky apartment building on the west side of Manhattan but in a two family attached house in Brooklyn) I saw many things, some subtle, that just clicked for me. I'm definitely in for the whole season.
