  1. I have recurring nightmares about going back to either high school or college determined to finish them (I actually DID finish them), getting all my books and assignments, and then not going to classes or getting very far behind in my homework. I read someplace that this "unfinished business" type of dream is quite common (probably brought on by the stress in all our lives!).
  2. Where's GEML?
  3. I LOVE the Tony Romo Direct TV ad. "Artistic" Tony Romo is so deliciously creepy. I laugh every time I see it.
  4. In my tradition we use wine, but offer grape juice as an alternative for those who do not choose to drink alcohol (for whatever reason). In our faith you need receive only one element (bread or wine) to receive the benefits of the sacrament. However, we serve both. We believe in consubstantiation (the bread and wine are the true body and blood of Christ as well as the elements bread and wine).
  5. I may have missed it but has Amy announced a wedding date?
  6. Well, he's doing better, but not great by my standards. And he is an adult now, so he's on his own. He married a woman who seems to be good to and for him. I'm grateful for that. And as Jim Gaffigan says when he introduces himself to his audience, "My wife and I have two wonderful kids (applause and whistles from the audience)...and another kid." It's a crap shoot.
  7. As a parent who thought she raised her child correctly, and then that child ended up doing unbelievable things, I respectfully disagree. I feel sorry for them. Whether you agree with them or not (and I do not), they thought they were doing right by their child. I am sure they are heartsick over all this. My problem comes with the fact that they still have not gotten him the professional help he needs. There are qualified, certified, professional Christian counselors to whom they could turn if they didn't want to use more secular services. And, to my way of thinking, JB and Michelle should just stay out of this. Josh is 27...an adult. Unless he specifically asked for their help, he and Anna should deal with this by themselves (difficult due to the publicity, but not impossible). JB and Michelle should certainly give support to Anna, but that's it. Just my opinion as someone who has been there.
  8. Not sure where this topic belongs, but after all those years, don't you think the film crew might have suspected something? I've heard them quoted as saying things like' what you see on TV is the way they are', but really? I just find it hard to believe that someone didn't suspect something. Have any of them spoken since all this came out? Perhaps they have a non-disclosure clause? Just wondering.
  9. My hubby has sleep apnea and at first (years ago) I thought it was like sleeping with Darth Vedar because the machine made so much noise (but LESS noise than his snoring!). But the new machines are quiet and he sleeps well and so do I. Sleep apnea can be dangerous so get that machine if your MD says so!
  10. Sorry I haven't posted in a few days. Let me clear up my post. The Sister Wives people wanted to meet with women who have escaped polygamy and then let their own kids have a discussion with them. So Collene (Escaping Polygamy) was one of the girls who met with them. She did NOT return to polygamy. She argued very effectively against it. The 'big difference' was that in Collene's polygamist family, the women and kids were abused and neglected, whereas the Cody Brown kids are supposedly are happy and well taken care of.
  11. As a retired teacher I can attest to the fact that grammar IS taught (at least in my school). It just seems it's not important to some students. I spent hours correcting grammar mistakes in compositions. It's/its, your/you're, affect/effect, than/then (my husband still asks me about that one!) to/two/too and so on. I'm not sure why kids can't master these, unless as I just wrote, it is not as important to them as texting their friends (don't get me started on text spelling!). I found that kids would learn the differences for a test but not apply them in their writing. I doubt home schooling is solely responsible.
  12. Exactly! The 40 day 80 day restriction does no longer seem to be in practice by religious Jews (even the Hasidic) if the following article is to be believed. However, observant Jews apparently still practice niddah (a period of separation when a woman is menstruating and immediately thereafter). Please refer to this site for details. Gothardism sexual practices are quite dissimilar from Old Testament Jewish practices! http://www.jewfaq.org/sex.htm
  13. Megyn Kelly is back from vacation and addressed the Josh Duggar situation tonight. She played 2 clips from her previous interview. The first was the one where she said to the family (I forget if it was JB and M or the girls) that "some say the reason you have been attacked so much is because of hypocrisy" and the second was when she was talking to the girls and asked some thing like,"this is it then, right? No more shoes will be dropping?" I am paraphrasing her. She then had on a Southern Baptist minister who also agreed that Josh was a hypocrite and spoke about how Christians are not without sin, no matter what they preach. I know some people thought her first interview was not hard hitting enough, but I thought she covered everything without being nasty. She was dealing with a sensitive topic, especially with Jill and Jessa. Edited: She also went over his statements and said how he changed them and how confusing it was. First he says this and then he says that. She said his career as a spokesman for family values was definitely over.
  14. This is from the old Testament. Perhaps someone who is Jewish might be able to explain. There are lots of restrictions including taking a special bath called a mikva( I probably spelled that wrong), but I think mostly orthodox and Hasidic women do this.
  15. Is this man the cameraman Jim? Have any of the crew had anything to say?
  16. Escaping Polygamy is OK. Oddly enough, one of the escaped girls on the show was on Sister Wives explaining why she had escaped! But it is always the same things. Someone wants to leave, Arrangements are made and the people helping the escapee show up in the dead of night or at some time when no one else will be home to stop them. They pack all their worldly belongings into trucks and cars and make the great escape. Many of these girls/ladies are related. Last week they freed someone from the Warren Jeffs cult and that was pretty interesting.
  17. Escaping Polygamy is a new show. Sister wives will be back in the fall, I believe.
  18. I have an idea for a new reality show. It came to me after watching a few episodes of "Escaping Polygamy". How about "Escaping Gothardism". Probably someone smarter than I am came up with this already, but the similarities are there. The women escaping polygamy need a support system to get them used to how to dress, get an education, and get a job. They also need moral support and assurances that they are not going to Hell because they left the order. What do you think?
  19. This is probably not the correct topic for this but I wasn't sure where to post it. I was googling "Hyrum Timpson" (remember from Polygamy USA?) and I clicked on 'images'. I scrolled through and found one picture called Centennial Park at the beach. In the back on the right was Hyrum. Kellie was there too and it looked like she was pregnant. I've always been curious about those two!
  20. GeeGolly, thank you, sweetie, but my post was not directed at anyone in particular. I never even make a note of those names, just the sentiments expressed. I really do not care what one's beliefs are and I, too, try to be respectful. It's just that with all this recent stuff, some people who would normally be a little more discrete seem to be getting carried away.
  21. A link to an interesting article: www.yahoo.com/parenting/should-the-duggar-family-really-be-stunned-by-127253598772.html
  22. OK I just have to put this out there. I am a Christian with pretty conservative values. It distresses me when others paint all Christians ( or even all Fundamentalists) with the same brush. I respect other people's rights to have their more liberal/progressive opinions. I really do! But sometimes the comments made about Christianity/God/Jesus are pretty disrespectful and, in some cases, hurtful to me. Please remember that there are all kinds of people on this forum. I am not trying to scold anyone, just remind us all to be respectful of others beliefs. Thanks!
  23. A lot of the email addresses ending in .mil (military) or .gov (government). Some were even sent from White House (doesn't mean the prez was involved...just someone there). No names yet, but I bet they will be coming out.
  24. What an interesting theory!
