  1. AVClub essay on ATHF and AS. While I got y'all here . . . what do you think of Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell? I find it middling . . . Gary's a boob, Claude's a massive schemer/suck-up, and Satan is the worst boss ever. There are some good moments, but I can't see it lasting much longer. At least it keeps Eddie Pepitone on TV every now and then.

Nationals lost on a walk-off. MLB.com has the Mets' magic number to clinch at 26. They're also a half-game behind the Dodgers for the second seed. It's going to be an uphill battle . . . if they hold the lead and manage to beat Greinke and/or Kershaw, they'll either have to win in St. Louis or face a more improbable underdog team in the Cubs or Pirates. And if they make the World Series, they'll have to start on the road (stupid "All-Star Game counts"), likely against another "Why Not Us?!?" team. Or the Yankees. Don't think I could stand another Subway Series, especially if it's a rout like in 2000.

*sigh* I turn on the TV. Mets are down 6-0 to the Phillies. A few minutes and hits later, they're down 6-4. I'm starting to think about DVRing Comedy Central's new stuff while the Mets relievers attempt to put out the fire. One problem: the hydrant they hooked the hoses to? Gasoline. It's now 14-4, and I don't think the Mets can come back. I had hoped they could overcome a six-run deficit, but ten runs? That would take a miracle. I mean, I'll check in, but I don't think the Phillies are that hapless as to blow a ten-run lead.
  5. I got the latest Empowered volume from Amazon today. I liked it, but I wouldn't recommend it for new readers because it's the ninth book in the series. I'd advise reading the first few volumes to get a feel of the hapless heroine's adventures, or maybe the deluxe hardcover collections. It's not as porn-y as the shrinkwrap and "mature readers" sticker suggests. Also got the first Black Panther tpb collecting T'Challa's adventures from Christopher Priest. I still have the single issues, but I found a sweet discount on Amazon. In my mind, Priest's run is what the movie should aspire to be.

Tonight was American Ninja Warrior night, so I missed most of the Mets' win over the Phillies. I was able to catch the part where Bartolo Colon got a hit, and the crowd gave him a huge ovation. After that, Curtis Granderson drove him in with a homer. Curtis was about four steps behind Bartolo on the way to home plate.
  7. Looks like we're going to get a record number of second rounders. Dunno who to feel more sorry for . . . Sam Sahn or Jessie Graff. Brutal eliminations. Anybody else feel that Piston Road should be retired? At least the Warped Wall has been tweaked, with a shorter run-up. A lot of competitors wound up skipping pistons altogether. Sonic Curve does effectively replace the Halfpipe Attack, though.

I missed the no-hitter because of the VMAs. Also didn't hear about the Yankees scoring 20 runs for hours. Now I got this image of the two might-be porn stars in the last SNL sketch, and Terry Collins whizzes by on a bike, saying, "Did somebody say 'Subway Series'?"
  9. Totally forgot this was on for about the first forty minutes. Just as well . . . I don't think I saw any of the winning videos. Actually, I'm pretty sure I've seen "Blank Space," but not "Bad Blood." Is that any good? Or is it more about Taylor and heartache again? Kept watching to see if MTV would show a commercial for The Challenge. No such luck. I guess there's some stuff I can never outgrow. Oh, and Kanye West keeps bringing me back to how South Park poked fun at him twice. "Fish Sticks" was pretty funny.
  10. Something tells me the "secret" of the Sleeping Knights is going to wind up being lame. At least we had Kirito being l33t again. For some reason, I never tire of him going into self-made god mode.
  11. You ever see Inception? Same basic concept, only with microverses instead of dreams. In the B-plot, Rick's spaceship is as big a dick in protecting Summer as Rick is. Oh, and mother *burp*-ing Stephen Colbert plays a pompous alien. Just all around awesomeness to be had.

Here are the pics. And yes, the mascot is really called "Scooter the Holy Cow." He had two friends in the beginning of the franchise's history; Red and Huck. I guess they were laid off. ETA: Is it too early to be counting down magic numbers? I remember the good times of 1986, when the Mets steamrolled the NL East, and the Daily News counted down from 100.

Went to see the Staten Island Yankees trounce the Connecticut Tigers, 10-2. Overspent on food, including a toy helmet filled with soft-serve vanilla ice cream, but I reckon it was worth it. I'd go over the details of the game, but I didn't keep score because I didn't get there in proper time. It was Military Appreciation Day, and veterans of past wars were recognized, which was nice. I'll post pics on my Flickr account.
  14. I checked Adult Swim's schedule . . . the marathon covers the latest seven episodes, not the last ones. I don't think we'll be getting a Beware the Batman situation.

Looks like I picked the right game to not visit. Mets lose, 3-1. I think the highlight was when SNY interviewed Jesse Orosco. Seriously, handing out 15,000 bobblehead dolls to a sell-out crowd must have been a pain. And they're doing it again tomorrow with toy trucks. ETA: I didn't completely lose faith in the Mets. I kept the TV on them for most of the game. I don't think it says that much of me as a fan; rather, I think the sizable lead they have on the Nationals gives fans less to curse about when things go south.

Mets finally ran out of magic against the Red Sox. The funny part was that the game went into the tenth inning, and that caused Bill Simmons to have Game 6 flashbacks. Check it out . . . here, here and here.

Tenth inning, Mets tied with Phillies 5-5. Jeff Francouer smacks a ball to the pitcher's mound. It goes off Carlos Torres' foot. Daniel Murphy catches the ball, bobbles it a little, then blindly throws to Torres, who is covering first. Out, side retired, and Mets wind up winning 9-5 in 13 innings. I know it's the Phillies, I know they're in the basement . . . but damn, you gotta wonder about the Mets' chances in the coming month. Did I mention they were down 5-0? Sure, they left behind a lot of players in scoring position prior to breaking the game open, but you just gotta believe these days.
  19. "He woke me up and it pisses me off." Good times. I liked the VA also played Santa in Squidbillies. One bad thing about the end of ATHF . . . the possibility of no more of Carl's weekly handicapping the NFL every week. I'll admit it . . . I watched every week. Best one was the week after Super Bowl XLII, when he was amped up about his Giants beating the undefeated Patriots. He had shaved his mustache because he was going to dodge certain people for not being able to cover his bet. In the end, I think his head exploded from sheer happiness.

Well, I did it. I got reamed on service fees, but I managed to get a ticket to the Mets' final game of the regular season. I'm hoping it'll be a drama-free springboard to the NLDS, as opposed to a late choke like in '07 and '08. Oh, and the tickets for Saturday's game are way too high on StubHub, so I'll probably stay close to home that day. I dread going on eBay on Sunday to see how much Jesse is going for.

I wound up DVRing Tosh.0 and Another Period when the Mets/Phillies game ran past 10 p.m. I probably won't do that tomorrow, but I wanted to see the Mets walk the tightrope. This time, they didn't fall off, and they won 6-5. I know that the Mets will eventually break my heart. It'll be a question of "when" rather than "if," and yet, I don't care.

Wow. That's an ass-whumpin'. Maybe the Yankees will put at least one run on the board. Or maybe they'll put a position player to pitch. Got the tickets. Total came at over $42 with fees, but it's still cheaper than going to the Bronx or Flushing for a game. ETA: Turns out Jacob deGrom is slated to pitch on Saturday. That'll make tickets more scare.

mojoween . . . care to elaborate? ebk57 . . . I'll check StubHub before noon on Saturday. The bobblehead is in limited quantities, and a lot of people are going to walk away empty-handed. I am going to make at least one purchase of tickets . . . I talked my mother into going to a Staten Island Yankees game on Sunday. Tickets at $16 is a good deal, and there's no hassle in going. Getting to Brooklyn to see the Cyclones would be a bit of a bitch.
  25. Caught the latest episode. It's Hatchin . . . Hannah on her own, befriending a circus performer, dealing with 10-year-old crushes, and smacking Blond Afro Urkel upside the head. That was funny.
